WELCOME

Welcome to our Gamble Plant Norfolk National Raceday which is an exciting date in our racing calendar as we have our Norfolk Grand National running today A huge thank you goes to our sponsors, Gamble Plant, who provide aggregates, skip hire, waste recycling, crushing and screeding – gambleplantnorfolk.co.uk. We also have a Greene King Beer Festival in the Adrian Flux Bar, so take some time to drop in and taste some of their new beers, as well as Jumping for Fun as our last race sponsors.

For anyone who missed the launch of HorsePWR, it is a new campaign being run by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), Great British Racing (GBR) and racing’s Horse Welfare Board (HWB) which focusses on providing the facts around safety and welfare in horseracing. Why not take a look at the website to learn more about the life of a thoroughbred from their birth through to their retirement – horsepwr.co.uk.

This is our second to last race day in our season, with the jewel in the crown our Jarrold Ladies Day taking place on Sunday 2 June. This is a great opportunity to dress up and then, after the racing finishes, party until 7.30pm accompanied by our resident DJ. The best dressed lady, best dressed couple and best hat competition that runs during the day is this year supported by KL Magazine, and more information can be found on the back cover of this race card.

We have a few dates for your diary including a 90s Disco on Saturday 27 July and, even though we haven’t as yet had a summer, we are planning Christmas! Due to the popularity of our Christmas Party Nights, we have two in the calendar for this year - Saturday 30 November and Friday 6 December More details and tickets are available through our booking page on our website –fakenhamracecourse.co.uk.

If you wish to book any of our facilities, or our outdoor space, for corporate or private functions, please call the office on 01328 862388 and speak to Sara (ext 5) or Trudi (ext 3).

Have a wonderful day and we look forward to seeing you again very soon.

BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Friday April 12th

Our Friday April 12th saw six exciting races take place throughout the day, with some impressive performances and great finishes on show.

We kicked off proceedings with a maiden hurdle over two miles which saw nine go to post. The well-supported Yalla Habibi justified the odds-on price in good style for a stable that was in red-hot form which continued for the Harriet Dickin team. Promising 3lb claimer Bradley Harris kept his mount in second and the eye was always drawn to this type who didn’t need to be at his best to win this. When shaken up, he showed a nice turn off foot to go clear approaching the final flight and pinged it to score by eight lengths.

Next up was a 0-115 handicap chase over two miles and five furlongs which came down to a tactical affair with just the five runners. Do No Wrong was pulled up after a below-par round of jumping and the market leader also made a mistake three out which saw Scene One’s chances vanish. Ingennio also looked out of touch after a patient ride but soon rallied under Gavin Sheehan before two out and joined Jack’s Touch over the last. His determination got his back up though and he scored by two and a half lengths to follow up on his selling victory over course and distance 11 days prior.

Tip Top Tonto completely put his last effort behind him and made full use of the handicappers’ gift to score in impressive style in our 0-95 handicap novice hurdle. The half-brother to the smart King’s Palace, he finally got things right here to get off the mark of the 16th time of asking under Charlie Hammond. It was Kalnoo and Celtic

Fortune who took up the running but Tip Top Tonto who sealed victory with a good jump at the last to score rather impressively by seven lengths. The Dan Skelton-trained Clararose settled for second and Cloudy Wednesday was a disappointing favourite.

The Wise Traveller was overlooked in the betting to come home a 11/1 winner in our 0-100 handicap hurdle over two miles, seven and a half furlongs. Hadn’t been since winning on good ground at Huntingdon in November, he followed up in a good style to complete a double in a bunched finish. There looked to be four in with chances as they jumped the last but Jamie Gambin’s 10lb claim got the job done, with the favourite Chatty Chich denied by three quarters of a lengths. Shengai Enki and Game Socks finished just behind in one of the races of the day.

Our feature race of the day was the 0-120 handicap which saw El Muchacho lead the betting, looking to give Harriet Dickin and Bradley

Harris a double on the day. He looked the likely winner three out but the 8lb rise for his stable debut looked to anchor him in his finishing efforts and finished third. This left it up to Coastguard Station and Aviles to fight out the finish, but it was the former who got the business done. Held up in last, he was nudged along under David Noonan and found plenty for pressure to just prevail by half a length.

Another brilliant day of racing here at Fakenham concluded with a bumper which saw Paul Nicholls and Angus Cheleda team up victory Bond Broker went pillar to post and looked impressive on his third start, fitted with the first time hood. He looked to appreciate the good ground after being withdrawn on three separate occasions and justified the shortest price. Cheleda increased the tempo four furlongs from home and was no for catching, with Galway Reel back in second at 28/1 and Sixty Plus in third at 150/1.
