Evening Racing

Thursday 2nd February 2023

Official Programme £3.00

Good Evening

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse for one of our regular Thursday evening fixtures under floodlights. Even though we are starting to see a gradual lengthening of the days, which is heartening, the floodlights will still be very much in evidence for several more months. Whilst we all look forward to those balmy summer evenings, the floodlights here at Chelmsford add a unique atmosphere to the evening, which, even on the coldest of evenings, give a warmth to proceedings that I, for one, miss during the summer

We have a seven-race card for you tonight with some interesting and tricky contests, where winners will, as ever, be hard to find. I wish you the best of luck in finding some winners and trust you will have an enjoyable evening.

For more information about any of our upcoming events please visit chelmsfordcityracecourse.com or call the office on 01245 360300.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

TFRHHIII BHA-

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6)

CITY SELECTIONS

Grangeclare View finished third in a similar C&D event three weeks ago and he will likely show up well again, while River Wharfe is one from two at this venue and it would come as no surprise to see him run a big race. However, the tentative vote goes to NASIM, who drops into class 6 company for the first time.

Leading course trainer (17-22): M Appleby (75 wins from 627 runners, 12%) runs NASIM

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): M Appleby (7 wins from 46 runners, 15%) runs NASIM

Weightwatcher: NASIM won off a handicap mark of 78, his rating is now down 11lb to 67.

Longest Traveller: HOMER STOKES trained by D & N Barron, Thirsk, 214 miles.

LILIKOI was a stylish winner at Newcastle last time and a 5lb penalty might not be enough to anchor her if she can reproduce that level of performance on this surface. Bond Boy has won two of his last three starts and demands respect, especially with Frederick Larson taking a valuable 3lb off his back. Handicap debutant Bluebells Boy adds further spice to the race.

Plenty in with a shout and it could just be worth chancing BLIND BEGGAR. A winner on debut for Mick Appleby in December, he failed to match that level at Newcastle since but a first-time visor could just put an edge on him back at 5f and he remains on a workable mark. Lingfield scorer Mick’s Spirit and Dusky Prince head up the dangers.

CITY SELECTIONS

The key to this race could be the recent clash between Shine Honey Shine (first) and SAVANNAH SMILES (second) at Southwell, and it is the latter who is taken to come out on top.

Tom Ward’s charge got bumped early on and didn’t get the clearest of runs on that occasion, so could reverse the form now she is 7lb better off. Little Helen and Scramble can also have a say in proceedings.

Leading course trainer (17-22): J Tate (31 wins from 142 runners, 22%) runs QALAHARI QUEEN

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): K R Burke (6 wins from 22 runners, 27%) runs SHINE HONEY SHINE

SHINE HONEY SHINE didn’t need to improve when making her second start a winning one at Southwell 10 days ago but she was ultimately well on top at the finish then and with the prospect of more to come, she could well follow up. Nuthatch, caught the eye herself on debut 7 days ago and is feared, along with Scramble. Invested and Copper Bay are newcomers to monitor in the betting.

STORM CATCHER has travelled kinder since being moved up to 1m2f in November and a 3lb rise for his dead-heat over C&D last month shouldn’t be enough to prevent another bold bid. CITY SELECTIONS

Well Prepared has more on his plate now shouldering a 5lb penalty after recently winning a similar contest at Wolverhampton, and he may prove worth taking on. MISS SLIGO shaped better than the bare form when attempting to make all over 1m4f last week and, having run well over C&D last month, she gets the vote now dropped to 1m2f. Arpina wasn’t disgraced on her first attempt over this distance when last seen finishing fifth at Lingfield.
