As we have been encountering some of the coldest weather for several years this week, it has been a gargantuan effort by the team to be able to stage racing today. It is particularly unusual to get such cold weather before Christmas nowadays. Over the course of Sunday night, in the region of four inches of snow fell on the course, and we woke up on Monday morning to a winter wonderland. Fortunately, the snow has insulated the track from the worst of the frost during the week but with such severe night-time temperatures, preparing the racecourse for today has been a challenge.
We look forward to being able to offer you seven races tonight with our usual mix of competitive and exciting racing. We would like to thank Weatherbys for their generous sponsorship of our feature race tonight, which is much appreciated.
Keep warm and have an enjoyable evening.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
TAGABAWA was successful on his debut at Wolverhampton last month, pushed out under hands and heels by James Doyle. The son of New Approach ought to improve on that initial experience and he’s fancied to shrug off the penalty and follow up. Wigmore Street has all-weather winners in his pedigree and makes plenty of appeal, while similar comments apply to James Tate’s Regal Empire. Dancing Gypsy has posted some creditable efforts in defeat and can’t be ruled out either

TAGABAWA looked a potentially useful prospect when getting off the mark at the first attempt at Wolverhampton 26 days ago, making rapid headway off a steady pace and ultimately winning in good style. In excellent hands, he can defy a penalty and make it 2-2. Plenty of those also boasting experience rate likely longer-term projects, so newcomers Wigmore Street and Regal Empire may emerge as a couple of likely threats.
Cavern Club sets the standard following a trio of placed efforts and first-time cheekpieces could help eke out some improvement, but a chance is taken on KILCUMMIN. Joseph Parr’s colt shaped with promise over 1m on his debut last month and this step up in trip might hold the key. SUPER MO confirmed debut promise when runner-up behind a subsequent Group 1 winner in a Kempton novice back in the summer and, with the possibility of more to come, he could be the answer in a tricky novice. Cavern Club, with cheekpieces enlisted, Densetsu and Silver Sword head up the dangers.
Recent Wolverhampton scorer Mighty River demands the utmost respect on his nursery debut, but KINGSLEY PRIDE edges the vote. He split two above-average rivals over C&D last month and the son of Roaring Lion can go one better, with first-time cheekpieces a likely source of improvement. Uncle Matthew was disappointing on his handicap debut at Kempton, but he’s in excellent hands and a 4lb ease in the ratings ought to aid his chances.

Gloucestershire, a winner over 1m4f on the all-weather during a stint in the US, is respected but faces a stiff test conceding weight to the much improved TARBAAN, who won with plenty in hand over C&D a fortnight ago. The fitting of blinkers revved him up that day and, with the headgear retained, he is fancied to go in again from just a 4lb higher mark. Diamond Ranger reopposes on 4lb better terms from that race and is also considered.

Five horses go to post for this evening’s feature, the weatherbysshop.co.uk Handicap, a 0-105 class 2 event for three-year-olds, over 1m6f
Last year’s winner Bascule had won a handicap over the same course-and-distance a month earlier and that same race was won this year by the top-weight, Mountain Road. A winner over 2m here in September, David Simcock’s Churchill gelding defied a 3lbs rise when again coming from off the pace to win quite comfortably in the end. Up a further 4lbs for that latest success, the second and third re-oppose, but he is clearly on an upward curve and is likely to make a bold bid to land the hat-trick under Jamie Spencer.
Runner-up Spit Spot has 1½ lengths to make up and a 2lbs pull at the weights to do so. Chris Wall’s daughter of Sir Percy was herself a course-and-distance winner in September, so clearly goes well under these conditions. Those were her best two efforts in her short career to date, so there is every reason to believe that she can go well again and Hayley Turner maintains the partnership
Third home was Pons Aelius, although Charlie and Mark Johnston’s runner is actually 1lb worse off with Mountain Road, having picked up a penalty for winning at Kempton earlier this month. He has 4¼ lengths to find with the winner and stayed on strongly to win over 2m last time, so quite whether dropping back in distance by a couple of furlongs is a positive remains to be seen. That said, the Galileo colt was quick enough to win a handicap over 1m4f on good-to-firm ground at Newmarket in the summer and with just the quintet going to post, might be able to dictate things from the front, under Joanna Mason. Temporize was a long way behind stable-mate Pons Aelius at Kempton last week, but was caught out wide and could never really pressure for the lead. The son of Postponed is another from the Johnston stable who likes to go forward and is quite unexposed on an all-weather surface. A winner at Wolverhampton on debut in July, his only other victory came when beating Open Champion at Newmarket that same month, in a novice contest in which Mountain Road finished back in fourth. The latter has clearly flourished since going up in trip and entering handicap company and relishes the conditions here at Chelmsford, but the form should not be overlooked lightly, as Temporize is now 7lbs better off with the top-weight. William Buick takes the ride and Temporize wears cheek-pieces for the first time
Martin Keighley’s filly Zestful completes the line-up, although she is another who was previously trained by Charlie and Mark Johnston. The daughter of Postponed is lightly-raced, but is possibly best watched on her first start for current connections, having been picked up for 26,000gns during the summer This is her first outing since April and her new trainer might have one eye on a juvenile hurdling campaign.
Paul Ferguson WeatherbysMOUNTAIN ROAD easily fended off the challenges presented by Spit Spot and Pons Aelius when they met over C&D last month and created the impression that a 4lb higher mark is unlikely to prevent him from cementing his superiority over those two rivals. The last-named has improved since being switched to the all-weather and may provide the biggest threat to the selection, despite picking up a 6lb penalty for winning over 2m at Kempton
TIMEFORM VIEW Four wins from 16 runs this year 17/2, career best when winning 13-runner handicap at Kempton (16f) 8daysago,wellpositioned.Moreneededunderapenaltybutlikelytogiveitagoodshotallthesame.

There could be more to come from MOUNTAIN ROAD and he is taken to complete the hat-trick following his decisive verdict over the re-opposing Spit Spot over this C&D last month. The latter is taken to follow David Simcock’s charge home once again, with Pons Aelius, winner of a competitive Kempton handicap recently, also likely to be involved in the finish.
TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.MOUNTAIN ROAD (FR) 2.SPIT SPOT 3.PONS AELIUS (IRE)
REVOLUTIONISE impressed when scoring for the first time since February 2021 at Wolverhampton last month and he must hold every chance of following up off a mark 12lb lower than his career-high. Excel Power was always in control when winning over further here last week and the drop in trip should not inconvenience him as he looks to notch a ninth career success. The well-handicapped Tiger Crusade is not to be underestimated either
