9 Form guide 10 Age 11 Weight 12 Stalls Position

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by, weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

Brando was the winner of the Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday, 17th September, 2016

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

There was plenty of encouragement to be taken from HARSWELL DANDY’s surprise debut second at Pontefract last week and a reproduction of that performance might prove sufficient. The daughter of Dandy Man may be given most to do by Far Above Mary, who is expected to prove more competitive on her turf debut, while Marry The Night is entitled to build on his opening bid when fifth at Thirsk.

RACE RESULT DISTANCES 1ST

Smalleytime appeared freshened up by a 51-day break when landing the spoils over 7f at Newcastle earlier this month. Although a 3lb higher rating shouldn’t prevent another bold bid, this drop to 6f might leave the four-year-old vulnerable. With that in mind, it could be worth taking a chance on THAKI, who is returning to the C&D of his last success. Doon The Glen also warrants a second look after an eyecatching second at Gosforth Park on Friday.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - DONALD WHILLANS

The Whillans team has been in red-hot form on the Flat and jumps and while the yard’s runners on the level here have been few and far between, the trainer also has a recent jumps record at Ayr of 11 wins from 77 runners for a 14% strike rate. See My Baby Jive is the yard’s only runner today but stable-stalwart Pallas Lord has been given two entries back here on Thursday and could look to follow up a recent second back on turf at Musselburgh after winning 5 races on Newcastle’s all-weather track between January and March. Whillans had a winner at the Perth Festival last Wednesday with Bollin Matilda after another success with Both Barrels at Kelso 2 weeks ago.

25% SUCCESS RATE AT AYR OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS

3 WINS FROM 12 RUNNERS

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - PAUL MULRENNAN

Paul was beaten to the jockeys’ title here by Gold Cup winning rider Joe Fanning last year but he’s back with his usual healthy book of rides for today’s first meeting of the new Flat season here and we fully expect him to go all out to wrest back his Ayr title. Paul’s 55 winners here over the past 5 years means he’s ridden 15 more than Joe Fanning in the same period and 23 more than both Andrew Mullen and Danny Tudhope although the younger Jason Hart is creeping up on the rails with 29 Paul was back amongst the winners for his main Ayr partner Jim Goldie at Newcastle on Friday with Humble Spark and the pair kicked off the new Sky Bet Series at Musselburgh last Sunday by sharing a winner with American Affair

Bustaam found a 10lb hike enough to prevent him from supplementing a Doncaster victory when runner-up at Pontefract earlier this month. He isn’t taken lightly off the same mark, but FIVER FRIDAY makes slightly more appeal on her return to 1m2f. The four-year-old was far from disgraced when seventh in a 21-runner affair over 7f at the Curragh and a race of this nature looks within her compass. Powerful Response is just one more to consider.

YIENGAA put in a career best when a close second over this trip at Nottingham nine days ago and the daughter of Land Force is clearly the one to beat on that evidence. Tip Top Tank failed to fire last time, but is a player based on his previous second at Newcastle and may improve for the application of a first-time tongue-tie and cheekpieces. Zaphea edges out Pinpoint to be best of the rest.

DISTANCES

It is hard to look past OLD COCK, who fared best of those held up off the pace when fourth at Newcastle on debut and, with that experience under his belt, he should take all the beating. Miaswell was sent off a warm order but could only manage fifth in a Newcastle maiden last September. Clearly better was expected and having his first run since wind surgery and a gelding operation, he is feared most. Crown’s Lady is respected on her introduction, particularly if the market speaks favourably. totewin: Old Cock toteeachway: Miaswell

EBONY MAW bumped into an in-form rival when runner-up over 1m4f at Thirsk and, stepping back up in trip off just 1lb higher than his last winning mark, he edges preference. Philos bounced back to form when a creditable second over an extended 1m4f at Newcastle and, nudged up 1lb, he can make his presence felt. Laudable completes the shortlist on his first start for a new stable, and the betting may prove informative.
