WELCOME
Welcome to this third meeting of our May programme.
There is something special about this evening’s event as one to share with our true Summer Jumps racing fans
A most warm and genuine welcome to those of you joining us as Racing TV members, I am delighted to support this initiative each year
My thanks to all Owners for entering your horses today; at the risk of repeating myself, your support is crucial to us and hugely appreciated.
Our sponsors today are Campbell & Rowley, Hales of Cartmel and Racing TV. My warmest thanks to you for contributing to our race programme; your support is extremely important to us and allows us to continue to invest in prize money.
Our Charity today is Bay Search and Rescue; I greatly admire the beauty of the Peninsula coastline, but no one should underestimate the power of the tide and the dangers that exist The work the volunteers carry out is nothing short of true courage and I would encourage you to learn more about their work if you can.
While we are proud to endorse developments in racing that seek to enhance the whole sport, I think we are owed more recognition both as a key Summer jumping track in the North and a significant economic contributor to the local economy. We are ever grateful for the support we get from you, our loyal customers; in return, we will strive to protect the sport and your enjoyment of racing
Love Summer Jumps, Love Cartmel
With my very best wishes to you, have a truly wonderful evening with us.
Lord Cavendish, Chairman Cartmel Steeplechases (Holker) Ltd
CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE
Up to third is Jonathan England. He has only had 3 rides in the first 2 days but 2 winners and a place is a superb return. Monday’s easy success on Al Zaraqaam in the St Marys Hospice Handicap Chase pushes him up the leaderboard This was a superb patient ride coming from well off the pace and judged to perfection
James Bowen was able to stretch his lead at the top of the Jockey Challenge after Monday’s racing
Despite not having a winner, the 2 placed rides ensured that that the gap extended to 3 points. He has 2 rides with good chances today, and the lead may widen as nearest pursuer Harry Skelton is not riding today Both are for the Warren Greatrex yard who supplied his winners on Saturday
Nico De Boinville is a rare visitor to Cartmel. Not content with his first winner here on the now-retired Mill Green in the PSR Marquee Veterans Handicap Chase, he quickly followed to land a double on Will Carver in the Old Park Wood Chase roared on by his enthusiastic owners.
Congratulations go to Mr Huw Edwards who rode not only his first ever winner here on Willewonga in the Fraser Cup, but on his first visit to the track too.

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE
It got tighter at the top of the Cartmel Trainer Challenge after the second day of competition on Monday
Sharing the lead at the top are Warren Greatrex and Dan Skelton. Dan had one placed runner on Monday to tie up the lead, but may not be in that position after today’s racing He doesn’t have any entries, whereas Warren has runners in the 6:20 and 6:50 with good chances
Hot on their heels in third is Sam England. With her jockey husband Jonathan they have had a winner on each of the previous day’s racing here, with all runners in the frame. With 3 entries today all looking to have decent chances, there may be a new leader tonight.
Seamus Mullins is just behind after the dual success of the ever popular Tommie Beau in the valuable Johnny and Tony Connell Memorial Handicap Hurdle This remarkable horse won on both Saturday and Monday which is a fantastic training performance. Congratulations go to Seamus and his team. Hannah Roach is another trainer to taste success with her first runner at Cartmel when Willewonga cruised to an easy win in the Fraser Cup.
Multiple Trainer Challenge winner, Cartmel’s own Jimmy Moffatt, will be looking to make a move up the leaderboard tonight with a number of entries.

HOW TO PLACE A BET
PLACE YOUR BETS....
Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.
BET IN TWO WAYS -
1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides
HOW TO READ
2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

This can go to HAARAR, who did well to get there given his inexperience was still evident at Southwell just over a fortnight ago and with further progress on the cards, Sam England’s charge can get the better of Eaton Anne, who showed plenty of ability on his Rules debut at that same track earlier this month. Mandega and Kingston Narcissus are also both interesting and can fight out third.

Race Description Selling races exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses Any horse that wins a ‘seller’ such as this two miles and one furlong hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder The auction is often well worth seeing, so make sure to head that way after the race.

Race Description This is a two miles and six furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Race Description This is the second division of Race 3. Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

Race Description This is a two miles and two furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

Race Description This is a two miles and five furlongs handicap steeple chase limited to novice five-year-olds and upwards Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

PLAY SMARTER
GABORIOT posted win number 4 since the autumn at Cheltenham 3 weeks ago and this versatile performer is fancied to successfully concede weight all round. Jerrysback probably didn’t have much to beat at Hexham but he’s still a huge threat, with Windsor Avenue also considered.
