Latest news from the Hairdressing Training industry – Image Skillnet Although 2019 is only our second full year of operation, we’ve seen a phenomenal uptake on our hairdressing training courses to date at Image Skillnet! In the highlycompetitive first third of the year, we’ve been flat-out funding and hosting a wide variety of hair & beauty courses for all of our network members. We’ve been working closely with industry professionals to source and fund a range of courses in direct response to the demands of the industry. Check out what we’ve got still to come in 2019: • We are running both The Master Colour Expert Programme and The Ultimate Colourist Package by Wella. These colour education courses help hairdressers not only grow their professional skills and business, but also their personal confidence, motivation and inspiration in colouring. • Stylists can learn from the Queen of Upstyling - Gemma Crossan, in one of our 1-day Upstyling Courses, or focus on cutting techniques on a Cutting Course with Sean Taaffe. • Our Hair, Scalp & Wig Therapy courses have proved extremely popular as salons are looking to offer this fantastic service to their existing and potential new clients.

14

Caring for clients who are going through changes in their hair can be a tricky and delicate issue. Aileen Maher & Hair Contrast Ireland have teamed up with us at Image Skillnet to teach the skills needed to treat these clients both physically and emotionally. • We can’t forget the men! We have several Barbering Courses available that can bring the participant from trainee to fully qualified. At Image Skillnet, we respond to the needs of the industry! We need to give our members training that is relevant. The only way we can do this is by hearing from those who are working in the sector. So, lend us your ideas! If you think you could run a course, or have an idea for a course, give us a shout! Join our network (It’s FREE!) at www.imageskillnet.ie, or catch up with us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and tell us what YOU want.

Who Are Image Skillnet??

Image Skillnet are a national training network that offer part-funding for training courses in the hair & beauty sector in the Republic of Ireland. We offer 25% off the full cost of all of the training courses we run. This money has been granted to us from The Department of Education to put directly into upskilling and networking professionals in the hair & beauty sector.

“A HAIRDRESSER’S AIM IS TO MAKE THEIR CLIENTS HAIR

LOOK AND FEEL FANTASTIC!” by Peter Munton

O

ur aim requires us to have not only to be a highly skilled hairdresser but also to give our clients the best possible experience, or Customer service. The combination of practical and care skills make for an ideal client visit to your salon. The first two instalments of these customer service articles concentrated on preparation, from the first contact with a client, through making an appointment to consultation. We tend to concentrate on service during clients visit, but we should be aware of the importance of customer service pre visit preparation. Good preparation makes the service during the clients visit easier and more outstanding. Having said that we should remember to continue the excellent service throughout the visit and aftercare service.

• Fresh and clean. ‐ Positioning at the basin. • Ensure the client is positioned to ensure no water seepage around the neck. • Ensure the client is comfortable. • Cleansing and Care products. ‐ The stylist responsible, or the person who carried out the consultation, should inform the member of staff carrying out the backwash service, of the recommended cleansing and care products. ‐ Reassure the client that recommended products are being used and why. • The shampoo process. ‐ Ensure client is comfortable with the water temperature and shampooing pressure. • Additional services. ‐ If a treatment has been recommended make sure the client is aware you are carrying out this for them. ‐ If head massages are available ensure you ask every client if they would like the service ( No one like to feel left out). • Completion ‐ Ensure hair is towel dry and the client is comfortable. ‐ Apply a fresh towel before moving the client to the styling position. ‐ At the styling, position ensure that. • The gown and towel are protecting the client. • The client is comfortable. ( No dripping hair etc.). • Offer tea or coffee (If part of the salon service). • Inform the stylist their client is ready. • Inform client of how long the stylist will be. • Offer newspaper if the client will be waiting a while.

At the backwash

During the service

Every aspect of the clients’ service at the backwash should be meticulous. This sets the expectations of the client. • •

16

Protecting the client ‐ Gowning. Fresh and clean, fitted to protect the client. ‐ Towel.

Ask the Client if they are comfortable. • Remind them of their consultation and the decisions made. ‐ Reassure them throughout the service. • The cut length and finished look. • If appropriate, the colour(s) chosen. • Reassure throughout each stage of the colour process. • The styling/finishing process. ‐ Inform on any finishing products used, and why.

Final consultation

The details below are quite a short list but do not let this lead you to the conclusion that it is not as important. This is one of the most important processes during the client visit, ensuring the client and yourself are happy and that all expectations have been met. • Go through everything decided during the initial consultation. • Check client expectations have been met. • Discuss Homecare. ‐ Products that should be used. ‐ How to keep their hair looking its best. • Styling techniques. • Amount of and use of products. ‐ Discuss future salon visits • When. • What should be done? Thank the client and bring to the reception

At the Reception Desk • The receptionist should. • Compliment the client • Check if home care products are wanted ‐ If necessary check with the stylist the products recommended. • Detail the total amount due and process payment • Book the next appointment. • Thank the client. Remember attention to every minute detail will ensure happy returning clients, this results in better working conditions for all members of staff. Finally a vital piece of Customer Service advice

CLAIRE GARVEY An interview with Couture Designer

premises which is a big achievement for any designer in Ireland. Grammy Icon Nile Rodgers and Chic flew in from the USA to cut the ribbon. I’ve designed for Nile for ‘The Oscars’, the ‘XFACTOR’, Better Midlers Party and even accompanied Chic on their XFACTOR performance. I still create for him for whatever his next project is.

Who else have you designed for? Where did you study Fashion & Design?

I studied Fashion in National College of Art and after did a masters in Costume Design in Russia.

Where are you based?

I opened my own shop Claire Garvey Couture in Temple Bar, Dublin, 20 years ago this year. Last year I finally purchased the

26

I have designed the jackets for Judge Julian Benson for ‘Dancing with the Stars’ for the past 3 years. I’ve known Julian since he modelled in ‘The Smirnoff Young Designer’[ Awards, which I won in 1991! I then designed costumes for his Irish Dance Show ‘Celtic Rising’ which was held in The Burlington Hotel. Dublin. I have supplied my designs to many shops including Liberty Of London. Other customers include Mary Coughlan, Katherine Lynch, Noel Cunningham and various musicians.

When did you start to design menswear?

Nile Rodgers was the very first menswear piece I designed. Its success inspired me to launch my own menswear fashion in Dublin and TV celebrity Eoghan McDerrmott and singer/ songwriter/musician JackL modelled for me. JackL is also a customer.

Where else have your designs been seen?

I was featured on The Late Late Show a few years ago when I designed the ‘Miss Universe Ireland’ Costume which created a stir! I’ve recently was flown over to Berlin to design for ‘The Berlin Show Orchestra’ for ‘The Famab’ Awards with flying violist sensation ‘Angel Strings’. I also created conductor Eimear Noone costumes for ‘China Video Games Live’ and ‘Legends Of Zelda’, and they will be featured in an upcoming documentary on her for RTE.

Have you been involved in any International Fashion Shows? I have shown my work in USA at ‘New York Fashion Week’ and was one of six Designers from across the world to win the competition to show in Paris organised by Madam Figaro Magazine.

What are you working on currently?

At the moment I have just finished costumes for short film with Evana Lynch from ’Harry Potter’ fame and ‘Dancing with The Stars America’ inspired by Luicia Joyce. I’m also working on new outfits for the USA Rapper ‘Dali Voodoo’ for his American video.

RICHARD MANNAH JOICO International Guest Artistic Director

W

ith over 25 years of experience in the hair industry that includes a leadership role at Toni & Guy London and spans across three continents Richard Mannah has amounted a veritable powerhouse of experience. Mannah has amassed laudable credits such as winning awards like London Hairdresser of the Year 2011/2012 (British Hairdressing Awards), being a part of the Australian F.A.M.E. Team for the Fellowship for British Hairdressing, working on New York and London Fashion Week projects for Vivienne Westwood, Tommy Hilfiger, Vera Wang, and his work has been published in industry and commercial publications alike – everything from Elle and British Vogue to Creative HEAD and The Journal. What makes Mannah such an incredible educator and mentor beyond his laudable talent? He’s also someone young up-andcomers can relate to and connect with. Having twice taking the title of “Newcomer of the Year” (1999 and again in 2000) – walking the path many of them are embarking on, he’s been where many of his students and mentees are now. Right at the beginning of their burgeoning careers, learning and growing and ready for more! In August 2018 JOICO announced Mannah as JOICO International Guest Artistic Director a crowning achievement, not simply to lead a brand’s global education but to find a brand who’s value’s, an artist can mesh so well with, and represent with

30

pleasure and pride. Mannah’s relationship with JOICO started in 2017, working on a photo-shoot in Australia, as well as video shoots and events in the U.S. which launched Beach Shake and Body Shake dry-styling texturizing sprays.

“…I absolutely love working with JOICO and what the brand stands for. It’s the healthy hair company which believes in education, innovation, teambuilding, creativity and global growth. All these things are close to my heart…,” He was also a headliner for the brand at their JOICO Global Destination Education week-long education get-away in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, where audiences raved about his stage presentation. Guests were treated to his blend of artistry and passion delivered in only the way Mannah can – with his personal touch and modern flair.

SEE IT, FEEL IT, BELIEVE IT Defy Damage with Joico

B

erlin was the venue for the launch of the innovative Joico Defy Damage range to the European market. The event began with a champagne reception and dinner hosted by Joico’s Eric Kater with trade press from all over the world. Next day, we arrived at a Joicos Brand ambassador salon ‘Max Höhn’s. Gaby Abel, Joico Europe’s Director of Marketing gave us an insight into the Joico defy damage range. It consists of a 2 step salon programme and home care products. Damage Defy follows the ethos that prevention is better than cure, it’s key to protect your clients’ hair from the extremes of heat styling, chemical use and pollution. We then met Joico’s International guest artistic director Richard Mannah who was first introduced to the range at a secret launch in Los Angeles last year and is still overwhelmed with the results it achieves. He presented two models he had treated earlier in the day to see, feel and believe the results. For the first time at a European hair care launch, we got to use high-tech VR goggles to see it for ourselves. The goggles transported us to Joico brand ambassador Larisa Love’s Los Angeles salon watching the beginning of a clients transformation using the products with Richard Mannah taking us through everything step-by-step. During our VR experience we visualized being in a rainforest, a desert and a dark forest to showcase the extremities that our hair can go through with our journey finished back at Larisa Love’s salon at the end of the client’s appointment showing off her fabulously healthy, glossy hair. From there we went on a culinary experience cooking at a Berlin Kitchen. Then off to the 3 Monkeys Bar for special cocktails to finish off the night in the 25 Hour Hotel. Thank you Joico.

GO GREEN AND GORGEOUS

Want to save the planet and look the best you can? Then the Kemon Actyvabio beauty range - born of and inspired by nature - is for you. Actyvabio is natural, organic and sustainable. It is the first organic professional hair care line certified to the COSMOS ORGANIC standard, which has a stringent, world-renowned level of certification with product formulas having up to 97% natural origin. The Actyvabio range contains up to 97% natural origin ingredients and up to 86% certified organic ingredients and it comes in recycled and recyclable packaging and it is vegan certified. Furthermore, all the product line formulas are free from SLES, SLS, silicones, sulphates, PEGs-PPGs, petrochemicalderived ingredients and GMO derivatives. Actyvabio is enriched with patented phyto-complexes with proven soothing properties. Kemon scientists ensure exceptional performance with healthy hair just as lustrous and soft as it would be after using conventional products. And Actyvabio’s secret ingredient? Velian Complex. More than 10 years ago in the hills of Umbria, Italy, the Kemon Open Lab was established by converting almost 20 hectares of land to organic farming and a research and development programme with medicinal plants. In this open-air laboratory, Kemon selected four plants for their emollient and soothing properties. These native plants were grown in accordance with organic farming techniques. Every year they are hand-harvested and then processed as appropriate to derive their extracts. These are

36

then skilfully blended to form a phyto-complex that produces a synergistic effect so potent that Kemon could obtain a patent attesting the high degree of innovation involved in research and results: this is how Velian Complex was created. Studies have demonstrated that specific blends of extracts of mullein, helichrysum, flax and dyer’s chamomile, produced using plants grown by Kemon, possess noteworthy anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant characteristics and that the patented Velian Complex blend produces an important synergistic effect, with results greater than those expected from the sum of the individual extracts. Velian Complex is the main ingredient in Actyvabio products and enhances its performance by adding significant antioxidant, emollient, soothing and protective activity. Certified organic aloe vera leaf juice is another essential ingredient in Actyvabio products. It is, in fact, the main constituent of all their formulations. Aloe vera is a shrubby, succulent plant whose virtues have been known for thousands of years. It is used for the gel extracted from the central part of its leaves. This gel is rich in polysaccharides that are able to retain water and give the plant its particular moisturising properties. The fragrance of Actyvabio products is COSMOS-approved and consists of 100% naturally-derived substances. It is characterised by flowery, fruity and citrusy notes. The top notes are: lemon, rose, ylang-ylang. Heart notes are: geranium, peach/apricot, freesia. Base notes are: amber, cedarwood, Cistus labdanum.

THE NATIONAL HAIRDRESSING APPRENTICESHIP UPDATE:

T

he National Hairdressing Apprenticeshiphas been in development over the last 15 months. It is an exciting time for the industry as this will be the first nationally recognised standard for hairdressers in Ireland. The three year apprenticeship will provide hairdressers with a formal qualification at level 6 on Irelands National Framework of Qualifications.

There is also a hairdressing apprenticeship website www.hairdressingapprenticeship.ie, which has useful information. Contact details will be updated as the development of the apprenticeship progresses.

This is fantastic as the next step on the framework is a degree! As part of the apprenticeship development, a recognition of prior learning (RPL) processes is also being developed that will provide an opportunity for experienced hairdressers in the industry the possibility to also get their level 6 qualification if they wanted to, more to follow on this! The apprenticeship is currently awaiting validation from Quality and Qualifications Ireland, who are the Irish body for approving all new programmes. After validation there will be lots of national employer briefings and events providing information about how to become an approved employer and how to register an apprentice, the good news is that this will not be a difficult process. The Education and Training Boards and official industry groups will provide loads of assistance with this.

Next, the exfoliating Treatment Oil is then applied to the scalp to rid the area from dandruff and excess sebum in preparation for the next stage. And The Soothing Treatment, enriched with Aloe Vera offers a soothing, moisturising and rebalancing effect for sensitive scalps. The three main shampoos in the range target specific issues

1. Energizing shampoo restores brittle, fragile hair and gently cleanses the scalp to create the correct environment to promote hair growth. 2. Calming shampoo soothes and calms irritated scalp returning the skin to its natural condition. 3. Pure balancing shampoo rids the scalp from excess oil/ sebum and dry dandruff leaving the hair light and clean. And finally the Gentle Detangler is a lightweight, moisturizing conditioner for a complete after-shampoo treatment which leaves the hair light, soft and silky without dragging the hair down.
