MountainTrue, a nonprofit conservation organization serving western North Carolina, is partnering with the NC Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) to launch a comprehensive River Debris Cleanup Program to address ongoing impacts from Tropical Storm Helene. The program will utilize $10 million in state funding granted through the North Carolina Office of State Budget and Management and sub-granted to NCDEQ to help with Helene recovery efforts.
The program is designed to supplement existing federal debris removal funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which is restricted to debris posing an immediate threat to
public health and safety or tied to limited economic recovery efforts. While FEMA and United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) have prioritized major rivers and large debris, significant debris remains in smaller streams and tributaries—posing risks and threatening vital tourism and recreation industries throughout the region.
To close this gap, MountainTrue will deploy paid cleanup crews across western North Carolina for the next 18
months. Since Hurricane Helene, MountainTrue staff and volunteers have removed almost 3 million pounds of trash and debris throughout the hardest hit counties of Western North Carolina. MountainTrue will expand this work by cleaning over 150 miles of river throughout Western NC. The crews will collaborate with MountainTrue’s existing volunteer programs to navigate affected waterways, remove waste, stabilize stream banks and strengthen local community engagement. MountainTrue currently has established volunteer operations on the French Broad, Green, Broad and Watauga Rivers, with strong community partnerships already in place.
“We’re committed to helping western North Carolina recover and rebuild, and this investment will help clean up debris still left in our rivers,” said Reid Wilson, Secretary of the NC Department of Environmental Quality. “This initiative represents a critical opportunity to restore our waterways, protect our communities and support local economies dependent on outdoor recreation and tourism.”
“This is more than a cleanup—it’s a recovery effort that puts people back to work and brings communities together to restore the rivers we all depend on,” said Hartwell Carson, Clean Waters Director with MountainTrue. “We’ve already seen how much

On July 18, the NC State Board of Elections formally launched its comprehensive effort to collect identification numbers — driver’s license numbers (DL#) or the last four digits of social security numbers (SSN4) — for about 103,000 voters missing them on the state’s voter rolls.
The Registration Repair Project aims to ensure that North Carolina’s voter rolls are as accurate and complete as possible, bring them into compliance with recent state court rulings, and settle a pending lawsuit with the U.S. Department of Justice. The State Board unanimously approved the plan at its June 24 meeting.
Under federal law (52 U.S.C. 21803) and North Carolina law (N.C.G.S. 163-82.4), when a person registers to vote, they must provide their DL# or, if they don’t have one, their SSN4. This information is used to verify the person’s identity. However, faulty instructions on a voter registration form used in North Carolina for about a decade led some voters to register without providing either number. The voter registration form was corrected in January 2024 to
make it clear that one of those numbers is required.
Thursday marks the official start of the Registration Repair Project, which includes the following efforts, among others:
• A dedicated webpage — ncsbe.gov/registrationrepair — to provide information about this project. The webpage includes a link to the Registration Repair Search Tool, which allows registered voters to search the list to see if they are on it. The data in the search tool will be updated every morning to show only those registered voters who still must provide missing data. The webpage offers three options for voters on the list to provide the required information to election officials. It also
includes answers to frequently asked questions about the effort.
• Detailed guidance to the 100 county boards of elections to immediately begin scouring election records for the affected voters to attempt to locate identification numbers that may not have been properly entered into the voter registration system, or other evidence that the voter has complied with state and federal laws. This process will reduce the number of voters who must provide information to election officials.
• In August, the State Board will send letters to individuals who remain on the list of affected voters. Each mailing will include a self-addressed, post-
age-prepaid return envelope and a simple form for collecting the required information, as well as information about the secure online NCDMV voter registration portal, where voters can update their registration information.
“This project will not result in the removal of any eligible voter from the voter rolls, as some have inaccurately suggested,” said Sam Hayes, executive director of the State Board. “Instead, it will result in cleaner, more complete voter rolls and full compliance with state and federal laws. We have gone to great lengths to make this process as straightforward and transparent as possible for the See BOARD, Page 3
From Page 1 progress is possible when local crews and volunteers work side by side. With support from NCDEQ and the State of North Carolina, we’re scaling that success across the region to protect water quality, support outdoor recreation, and help western North Carolina bounce back stronger than before.”
Targeted counties include Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Clay, Cleveland, Gaston, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Transylvania, Watauga, Wilkes, Yancey and the Eastern Band of
Cherokee Indians.
MountainTrue will oversee all aspects of the program, including:
• Selection and prioritization of cleanup sites
• Crew safety training and supervision
• Volunteer coordination and community outreach
• Program monitoring and reporting
• Marketing and donor engagement

Voters on the Registration Repair list have three options:
• If you have an N.C. driver’s license or DMV ID number, you can submit an updated voter registration form through the DMV’s website at payments.ncdot. gov. You can click “Continue as Guest” when asked to log in to myNCDMV. There is no fee for this service. Click “Yes” when asked to update your voter information.
• You can visit your county board of elections office, and they can help you ensure your registration is complete. You will need to have your driver’s license number or social security number with you. See the County Board of Elections Search for addresses and contact information for all 100 county boards of elections. The State Board and county boards of elections will not request your personal information over the
• Finally, in early August, the State Board will mail letters to individuals who remain on this list at the time the mailing is sent. You can fill out the letter and mail it to the county board of elections in the pre-addressed return envelope enclosed with the letter. Postage is provided on the envelope. In future elections, in-person voters who still have not provided the required information to update their registration must vote provisional ballots and provide the required information when they vote. That process is easy — the application for voting a provisional ballot includes prompts for DL# or SSN4.
The State Board is creating a flag to appear on these voters’ records in the electronic or paper poll books used at voting sites to alert poll workers that these voters must vote provisional ballots and provide the missing information for their ballot to count.
County boards of elections will train poll workers accordingly, under the plan.
(Part 4 of “Freedom in Christ” Series)
We are a spirit, we have a soul, and we live in a body. Our soul also has three parts: thoughts, will, and emotions. We can receive Jesus as our Savior but still struggle in any of these three areas. Bondages in our spiritual lives include exalting the philosophies of humanity above the word of God, losing desire for the things of God, or practicing religious activities out of tradition or obligation rather than as a loving relationship with God through Jesus Christ. In our soul, we deal with emotional wounds, insecurities, traumas, and similar struggles. In our bodies, we deal with sickness, lust, gluttony, and various addictions. We are a mess, but whatever chain is holding you captive, remember this: Christ has already paid the price for your freedom. The question isn’t whether He can break your chains (He already has). The question is whether you’ll step out of the broken shackles and walk in the liberty
He’s provided. Self-Sabotage
The number one enemy that can get us into bondage is our flesh. Romans 8:7-8 (AMP) says, “The mind of the flesh [with its sinful pursuits] is actively hostile to God. It does not submit itself to God’s law, since it cannot, and those who are in the flesh [living a life that caters to sinful appetites and impulses] cannot please God.” The only way to deal with the flesh is to crucify it! In other words, we are to tell ourselves no and surrender our desires to God’s plans. By saying no to our flesh and yes to His Spirit, we are allowing the fruit of the Spirit to manifest in our lives and the character of God to be dominant instead of our sinful flesh dominating our lives. For example, if I was angry with my husband, but the Lord tells me to apologize because I was being rude and controlling, I have a choice to say yes, Lord, and apologize, or say no. Every time I say no to the Lord, I am giving my flesh power over me and becoming a slave to it. If we want to continue to grow in the things of God, we have to diligently surrender ourselves to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
He will empower us to resist the flesh, and if we do submit to the flesh, we need to quickly repent.
Let’s Pray:
“Lord, be gracious to me; I long for you. Be my strength every morning, my salvation in times of distress. I need you every moment of every day. You are my deliverer and strong tower. Forgive me for allowing my flesh to run my life instead of being Spirit-led. Help me to conquer this flesh. I surrender my thoughts, words, actions, and everything that concerns me to you now. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Ask the Lord to forgive the sin in your life. Repent and turn away from those sins. Surrender to God. Ask Jesus to become your Savior and Lord. Pray for God to lead you to a bible believing church where you can grow and serve others. You will begin to cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

Ever since I can remember hunting deer, I have dreaded July and August. Not because the deer season is not here yet, but because it soon will be. And if I am going to be ready for the cooler mornings of September and the colder days of October and November, I have to force myself into the heat of summer to shoot my bow, put out my cameras, and hang tree stands. For the past several weeks the temperatures around here have been in the 90’s with humidity hovering around insanity. I mow my grass 30 minutes before dark and weed eat the next morning at daylight. Every other hour is sweltering. If I do have to work outside during the day, I usually do so in short increments to keep me from dying of heat stroke! Have I made my point? Yet, I know if I am going to be able to make an accurate shot, I need to be shooting my bow every day no matter what weather I’m faced with. I’ll do it but I don’t have to like it. It really is amazing to me that just about everything in life points to one unchangeable principle – you hardly ever reap in the same season as you sow. In fact, the term itself has been hijacked from the farmer. He knows, like none other, that truth. I imagine it has given him not only wisdom in other areas but patience in them as well. It also has given him a deep awareness of the uncontrollable period between those two seasons where he neither reaps nor sows but simply trusts. This is the longest season. It is the one that seems to have the most inactivity. It is the one that moves the work of reaping from the hand to the heart and from an aching back to a bended knee. The lesson to be learned in the principle of reaping and sowing is not only that we need to be careful as to what we sow but it is to remember that none of our work or our harvest, or our successes, can come without a season where God waters the seeds we have planted. It is and always has been His way of saying that our life’s work is a partnership with Him and that sometimes our job is to put our hand on the plow of trust and let God do the work that only He can do.

The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) experienced an internet outage last Thursday morning. The issue was resolved shortly after 9 a.m. on July 17, affecting the west central and northwestern offices. DMV officials attributed the outage to a service disruption by AT&T in the region. This incident occurred shortly after the
DMV introduced several initiatives aimed at enhancing customer service and reducing wait times. Earlier in July, the DMV announced operational changes aimed at minimizing long wait times. Customers can now check in at DMV offices and wait in their cars or nearby until they receive a text alert to come inside, helping them avoid adverse weather conditions. Additionally, walk-ins are now accepted at more locations throughout the day, rather than just dur-ing select hours. Several offices have also extended their hours, opening at 7 a.m.

(Family Features) A clean grill can enhance the flavor of your food, making regular grill maintenance an essential part of your outdoor cooking routine.
Grills, especially those exposed to the elements, can accumulate dirt, rust and food residue that can affect performance and safety. Plus, residual char and grease can impart unwanted flavors and even lead to flare-ups.
Once you’ve gathered the right tools - a sturdy grill brush with stainless steel bristles, a scraper, a bucket of soapy water, microfiber cloths and grill cleaner or degreaser - consult this step-by-step guide to keep your grill in pristine condition, ensuring delicious meals every time.
1. Preheat the grill for 15 minutes to loosen any stuck-on residue then turn it off and let it cool slightly.
2. Ensure the gas supply is turned off before cleaning.
3. Remove the grates and scrub them thoroughly with a grill brush and warm, soapy water. Rinse and let dry.
4. Clean burners by wiping them with a damp cloth.
5. Scrape the inside of the grill to remove any debris and use a vacuum to collect loose dirt and ash.
6. Wipe down the exterior of the grill with a microfiber cloth and grill cleaner.
7. Reassemble the grill once all parts are dry and give it a final wipe down.
In between deep cleanings, remember to clean your grill grates immediately after cooking while they are still warm to remove food particles and grease.
