Continental Divide bringing free concert to POPS ...featuring Forest City’s Chris Cole On Friday, September 26, Forest City and the POPS Pavilion Concert Series welcomes home one of its own: home grown and highly accomplished musician Christopher “Chris” Cole, who will perform with the highly acclaimed band Continental Divide. Chris and Continental Divide have long anticipated this special opportunity to perform in Chris’s hometown for friends, family, and a Rutherford County audience which has waited patiently for this opportunity to see Chris perform with Continental Divide and hear this band’s unique sound. Chris grew up in Forest City and graduated from East Rutherford High School where for many years he was a pillar member of East’s outstanding marching bands, playing trumpet and other brass instruments. He attended Western Carolina University where he earned a B.S. and Masters in music. For the next 42 years he taught high school band at Kings Mountain High School and Piedmont Charter School. His marching bands, and various other music groups he taught, performed to local, national and international audiences earning many prestigious awards. In 2011 Chris was inducted into the North Carolina Band Masters Hall of Fame joining his grandfather, Dee C. Cole, who was inducted into the

Band Masters Hall of Fame ahead of him in 2003. The Cole family is well known in Forest City and Rutherford County for their musical talent and musical contributions to the community over many previous decades. Chris’s grandfather, Dee C. Cole, who began his music contributions to the county in the 1910s, is honored, and his legacy remembered, with a special memorial gazebo on the grounds of the former Cool Springs school on Main Street, Forest City (now Rutherford County Schools Adminstrative Offices). The plaque refers to Mr. Cole as Rutherford County’s “Music Man” and the “Father of School Bands.” Over the course of five decades, Dee C. Cole was responsible for establishing school bands in seven Rutherford County communities. He also directed several bands and orchestras in surrounding areas and taught thousands of students the art of music. His efforts to garner support for Rutherford County school band programs is unprecedented. In addition to the North Carolina Hall of Fame, Dee C. Cole was inducted into the Rutherford County Schools Hall of Fame in 2013. Chris remembers his grandfather well and credits his grandfather with his own musical passion and success. His grandfather

was a great teacher, inspiration and the finest example for Chris and thousands of others who were touched by Dee C. Cole’s influence. It’s obvious that Mr. Cole’s musical talent and upstanding character DNA were passed on to his grandson, Chris Cole. Chris has played with Continental Divide since its inception in the early 70s. And Continental Divide has performed for crowds around the Southeast equally long. The band has maintained a reputation of quality, professionalism, and above all, top-notch music and entertainment. They continue to deliver a fun and energetic show full of the enduring music of Motown, classic oldies, and beach music. Frontman singer Gene Pharr, a 2016 Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame inductee, leads with his silky-smooth voice supported with the tightness of the rhythm section and flowing melodies of the horn line. Continental Divide will provide a performance people will long remember and demand to hear again. Continental Divide will play from 7 to 10pm on Friday evening, September 26. Admission is free and mobile food trucks will be available. The concert promises to be a special event to help welcome in the long-awaited cooler weather and fall colors.

Colfax Free Fair, Ellenboro School Carnival next week The Colfax Free Fair & Ellenboro School Carnival is set to begin on Wednesday, September 17 running through Saturday, September 20 at the old school grounds. The fair opens at 6pm on

Wednesday and Friday at 5pm. Saturday kicks off at 1pm which is Armband Day from 1 to 5pm The new Family Night Special is Wednesday night, also armband recognition. There is no cost to attend

the fair. Rides, games, food and fun are all a part of the fair with the midway rides by B&K Carnival Company starting all rides on Wednesday evening. The exhibit hall, food, games and vendors will begin operations on Tuesday night, Sept. 16. “A Christmas Carol” Auditions

Rutherford Stage will hold auditions for “A Christmas Carol,” on Tuesday, September 16 at 6:30pm in the lobby of The Foundation Performing Arts Center on the campus of Isothermal Community College. This timeless tale of hope and redemption by Charles Dickens was faithfully adapted for the stage by Diane McEnnerney. It will feature a large cast of all ages, though most of the major roles will be filled by older children and adults. While this is not a musical in the traditional sense, there will be many incidental Christmas carols throughout and there are many opportunities for singers of all ages. Rehearsals will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the Foundation. No experience is required. Performances will be held on Thursday, December 11 at 10am, Friday, December 12 at 7pm, and Saturday, December 13 at 3pm. The Thursday morning show will be offered as a field trip for local schools. Interested persons must be available to attend this performance to be considered for a speaking role.

$221 million USDA Disaster Relief Block Grant for NC announced Farmers who suffered AG losses in Helene-impacted counties could be eligible

North Carolina Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler and USDA Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden signed a $221 million federal block grant agreement that targets aid to North Carolina farmers who sustained losses and damages from Hurricane Helene in 2024. The signing took place at the N.C. Mountain State Fair in Fletcher. The North Carolina Disaster Block Grant for Helene is for production losses not covered by USDA programs or crop insurance. The program will cover four categories of eligible losses: infrastructure damage, market losses, future economic losses and timber losses. It will apply to the 39 counties that received a Presidential Disaster Declaration for Hurricane Helene. “This $221 million federal disaster assistance block grant for agricultural damage due to Hurricane Helene is welcomed news to North Carolina farmers in Western North Carolina who have been holding on

R-S Central High School Centennial Celebration – September 18 & 19 artifacts of R-S Central High School’s history can be found scattered in thousands of places. Pulling those items together for use in a documentary film has been a two-year-long effort for historian Robin S. Lattimore, and videographer Chad Medford. Their hour-long film “R-S Central High School: A Centennial Celebration 19252025” will premiere at the school’s 100th anniversary celebration Sept. 18 at 7pm in the school’s auditorium. audio recordings, and on-camera interviews,” says Lattimore, who wrote and directed the film, and who has also published a 472page, history for the school’s centennial. “Making history come to life on film requires using as many quality vintage illustrations and materials as you can find. We have pulled together a vast collection of items representing each decade of the school’s history.” Of particular importance are clips of vintage 16mm films shot on campus through the years, including rare footage from the 1940s before and during World War II, and other segments from

the 1950s-1990s. Lattimore and Medford incorporated recordings of the high school band and chorus at various times over the past several decades. Medford spent more than 100 hours with Lattimore creating the final product. “This project is important not only for R-S Central, but for anyone who enjoys learning about Rutherford County’s history,” said Medford. An important part of the documentary is interviews with graduates of the school back to the class of 1926. “It is an honor to be included in this amazing project,” says Elizabeth Carnegie Taylor, class of 1953, who was

by Pat Jobe This is one of those stories that makes me wonder how anybody functions in the physical world. Most of us can operate a car, van or pickup truck. Most of us can unlock a door if we have the key. Some of you will remember that I once locked myself in my car and had to call the dealership to figure out how to get out. I did graduate from college. Yes, one of my final exams was an open book test so they could get rid of me, but I did graduate. I was an insufferable smart aleck who wrote a newspaper column for the student paper that drove some of the administrators to profound irritation. Aren’t you glad I got better? Really? Well, some people think I got better. But even with a college education, I can’t figure this one out. How do you

not overcharge the battery on your cell phone? My beloved wife, Gabriele saw a YouTube video about fires starting because people leave their batteries charging all night. Okay I can fix that. Make sure it has a pretty good charge then leave it unplugged when I go to bed. I do that most of the time. Well, I do it now that she saw that video about overnight charging can cause fires. How have I avoided starting a fire in all these years since first getting a cell phone? And when they sell you a new phone, they say 85 percent charged is about what it needs. 85 percent? How in the name of all that is holy do I do that? That 85 percent sounds like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Oh, I know 80 or 90 would work about as well, but still it makes me a little cranky or even a whole lot cranky to try to keep up with whether my battery is charged. Why not just leave it charging overnight and have it all up at 100 percent when I get out of bed in the morning? Because that hurts the chances of keeping the battery going and going. We don’t want the energizer bunny to get tired, do we? And we don’t want to start

any fires. But 85 percent feels like more than I can handle. Should I stop whatever else I’m doing and check to see where the charge is over and over all day long? Do I plug it back up at 75 percent or 65 percent? What about 55 percent? Now that I have THIS to worry about on top of everything else, my battery sometimes nearly dies because I have forgotten that it needs a little juice. Honestly, folks, I love every one of you, even if most people who pick up the paper don’t read this column. One friend asked me if I had ever seen my column under somebody’s cat dish, not far from the litter box. Yes, I have. Keeps us humble. Life is complicated enough, sometimes enough to drive us nuts. We shouldn’t have to worry about keeping our cell phone batteries at 85 percent. Have you heard of the straw that broke the camel’s back? For some reason my back is hurting right now.

As many of you know, I spent the first 29 years of my life in Kentucky. Since I lived only about three hours or less from Lexington and Louisville, my culture was around thoroughbreds, basketball, and bourbon – with a mixture of tobacco fields. Even though my experiences were limited to basketball, these other influences were always in the background. With that said, let me pass on GARY MILLER a story I heard. At the celebration of the Buffalo Trace Distillery’s six-millionth barrel, Julian Van Winkle Jr. handed a legendary tour guide, Freddie Johnson, a bottle of 20-year-old Pappy’s – an expensive and rare gift. He was to use it to celebrate with his dad and brother. That night they opened it, and when Freddie tried to save some for a future time, his dad stopped him. He told his son there would always be more old bourbon, but not more of them. He said,” We are the fragile part of this whole thing.” So, that night they sat, talked, laughed and finished the bottle. Nine months later, both his father and his brother were gone—leaving Freddie with the line that’s now famous: “It’s not about the whiskey. It’s about the lives you touch and the people you meet.” Why do I tell you this? Deer season is upon us. For years, I have witnessed landowner after landowner, and many selfish hunters, try to protect their deer at the expense of a youth, new, or even old hunter. They have deemed the most fragile part of this process to be the animals and not the lives of those they could forever impact. And there is no doubt there will be some hunter who will not be with us next year. Remember my friends, it’s not about the deer. It’s about the lives you touch and the people you meet. Don’t Fall for Jury Duty Scams Residents in North Carolina have been receiving calls from people who claim to be deputies from Sheriff’s Offices. The scammers claim the recipient missed a jury duty summons and may be arrested

LASAGNA ROLLUPS Recipe courtesy of “Cookin’ Savvy” Servings: 4-6 (1 rollup per serving) 8 lasagna noodles 1 pound hamburger meat 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon onion powder 15 ounces ricotta cheese 1 teaspoon rosemary (optional) 1 jar marinara sauce 2 cups mozzarella cheese, divided In pot, boil noodles according to package instructions. Drain under cold water and set aside. In same pot, brown hamburger meat then add garlic powder and onion powder. Mix in ricotta cheese; rosemary, if desired; marinara sauce; and 1 cup mozzarella cheese. Heat oven to 350 F. Line baking dish with layer of hamburger sauce. Line cooled noodles on cutting board or parchment paper. Add hamburger sauce to each noodle and roll. Place lasagna rollups, seam sides down, in dish. Cover with remaining hamburger sauce and sprinkle with remaining mozzarella cheese. Bake 20 minutes.

BANANA PUDDING CHEESECAKE BARS Yields: 9 servings For crust 1 1⁄2 cup crushed vanilla wafer cookies 5 tablespoons butter, melted 2 tablespoons sugar Pinch sea salt For filling 1 1⁄2 (8 ounces) blocks cream cheese, softened 1⁄2 cup sugar 1 1⁄2 cup whipped topping 1- 3.4-ounce package instant banana pudding mix 1 3⁄4 cup whole milk For topping Whipped topping 1⁄2 banana, sliced 9 vanilla wafer cookies Line an 8-inch by 8-inch pan with parchment paper. Make crust: In a medium bowl, combine crushed wafer cookies with butter, sugar and salt. Press in an even layer into the prepared pan. Place in freezer while making filling. Make cheesecake filling: In a large bowl using a hand mixer (or in a stand mixer), beat cream cheese until fluffy and no clumps remain. Add sugar and beat until combined. Fold in whipped topping and set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together pudding mix and milk. Let pudding stand for 3 minutes in the refrigerator, until thickened. Fold into cheesecake mixture until well combined. Pour filling into prepared crust and smooth into an even layer. Freeze until bars are firm, at least 6 hours and up to overnight. When firm, remove from freezer and slice into nine bars. Top each bar with a dollop of whipped topping, a slice of banana and a vanilla cookie before serving. Note: If banana isn’t your favorite flavor, replace banana pudding with lemon pudding and use a thin lemon slice in the whipped topping dollop as a garnish when serving.

Call your local law enforcement agency if you want to verify that the call you received was a scam. • If someone asks you to pay in gift cards or cryptocurrency, it’s definitely a scam. The Kentucky Headhunters perform at Don Gibson Theatre The Don Gibson Theatre recently hosted The Kentucky Headhunters, an American country rock and Southern rock band from Kentucky. Band members include Doug Phelps, Fred Young, Greg Martin and Richard Young. They have released ten studio albums, three compilation albums and 23 singles. Their biggest single is a cover of the Don Gibson song “Oh Lonesome Me,” which went to number eight on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts in 1990. The band won a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1990 for their album Pickin’ on Nashville, three Country Music Association awards, and an Academy of Country Music award. The crowd enjoyed hits which included ‘My Daddy Was a Milkman,’ ‘Dumas Walker’ and the Don Gibson cover of ‘Oh Lonesome Me’.

On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, I was sitting in a chair on my sun porch listening to Good Morning America and doing some work before heading over to the newsroom at the newspaper office where I worked. As unbelievable as it appeared on television, the news was real. At 8:46 am an American Airlines jet flew into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Just 17 minutes later at 9:03 am, a United Airlines Flight hit the South Tower and within an hour and 42 minutes, both towers collapsed. An American Airlines Flight crashed into the Pentagon at 9:37 am and a fourth plane, believed to be

targeting the US Capitol or the White House crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pa. Passengers on that flight fought against the hijackers and the plane crashed into the field. It was one of those days in history no one will forget. When it became apparent American was under attack, I went to work and we began our coverage of the 9/11 attacks. It was such a sad news day. Today 24 years later, the Forest City Fire Department in partnership with the Town of Forest City and the Marine Corps League are hosting the 9/11 ceremony at POPS at 10 am. Every year following the attacks in 2001, the Forest City Fire Department has hosted a memorial ceremony at the fire station. Some days the crowds were small and other times crowds were larger. School students often presented music. A few years ago the ceremony was moved to the Park on the Pavilion (POPS) in Forest City to allow for more space. Emergency vehicles are displayed, there is music and a program. The Pledge of Allegiance, prayers,

comments and a poem of memorial are scheduled. The event is to remember every person that lost their life and especially those that ran into the World Trade Center towers to try and rescue others. While so many were running to get out, the first responders were running into the face of danger and death. The attacks killed 2,977 people, thousands were injured and sustained long term health problems due to the attacks. It was the deadliest terrorist attack in history and the deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers. When we remember the attack of 911 maybe one of the best things we can do is to thank a first responder in our community and county and to pray. Every day they put their lives on the line for others and for that, “we cannot forget.” Thanks, Forest City Fire Rescue, the Town of Forest City and the military personnel and for making sure this ceremony continues each year - Lest we forget. Nancy Brooker Simmons Nancy Brooker Simmons, age 73, of Spindale, passed away August 28, 2025. She was the daughter of the late John and Joyce Brooker, and a native of Rocky Mount, VA. She was born and raised on a 200-acre farm. She was also preceded in death by her stepson, Donald “Mick” Simmons, Jr. Nancy completed a Bachelor’s of Sociology degree at Virginia Tech. She worked as a social worker in VA for 10 years. After moving to TN and working at Sevier County Bank, she became the first female loan officer in bank history. She is survived by her husband, Donald Simmons, her brother, John Brooker (Peggy) of Casper, WY, stepchildren Greg Simmons of Lenoir and Belinda Camper (Daryl) of Rutherfordton, step grandchildren Jonathan Barnes of Cary, and Corine Willen (Noah) of Charlotte. DEQ’s Division of Water Infrastructure is now

North Carolina’s allotment is $409,422,000 for Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF Helene) projects and $253,681,000 for Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF Helene) projects.
