... featuring Forest City’s Chris Cole, former KMHS Band Director
On Friday, September 26, Forest City and the POPS Pavilion Concert Series welcomes home one of its own: home grown and highly accomplished musician Christopher “Chris” Cole, who will perform with the highly acclaimed band Continental Divide. Chris and Continental Divide have long anticipated this special opportunity to perform in Chris’s hometown for friends, family, and a Rutherford County audience which has waited patiently for this opportunity to see Chris perform with Continental Divide and hear this band’s unique sound.
Chris grew up in Forest City and graduated from East Rutherford High School where for many years he was a pillar member of East’s
outstanding marching bands, playing trumpet and other brass instruments. He attended Western Carolina University where he earned a B.S. and Masters in music. For the next 42 years he taught high school band at Kings Mountain High School and Piedmont Charter School. His marching bands, and various other music groups he taught, performed to local, national and international audiences earning many prestigious awards. Chris and his wife Sarah reside in Kings Mountain.
In 2011 Chris was inducted into the North Carolina Band Masters Hall of Fame joining his grandfather, Dee C. Cole, who was inducted into the Band Masters Hall of Fame ahead of him in 2003.
The Cole family is well known in Forest City and Rutherford County for their musical talent and musical contributions to the community over many previous decades.
Chris’s grandfather, Dee C. Cole, who began his music contributions to the county in the 1910s, is honored, and his legacy remembered, with a special memorial gazebo on the grounds of the former Cool Springs school on Main Street,
Forest City (now Rutherford County Schools Adminstrative Offices). The plaque refers to Mr. Cole as Rutherford County’s “Music Man” and the “Father of School Bands.”
Over the course of five decades, Dee C. Cole was responsible for establishing school bands in seven Rutherford County in communities. He also directed several bands and orchestras surrounding areas and taught thousands of students the art of music. His efforts to garner support for Rutherford County school band programs is unprecedented. In addition to the North Carolina Hall of Fame, Dee C. Cole was inducted into
the Rutherford County Schools Hall of Fame in 2013.
Chris remembers his grandfather well and credits his grandfather with his own

thousands of others who were touched by Dee C. Cole’s influence. It’s obvious that Mr. Cole’s musical talent and upstanding character DNA were passed on to his grandson, Chris Cole. Chris has played with Continental Divide since its inception in the early 70s. And Continental Divide has performed for crowds around the Southeast equally long. The band has maintained a reputation of quality, professionalism, and above all, top-notch music and entertainment. They continue to deliver a fun and energetic show full of the enduring music of Motown, classic oldies, and beach music.
Frontman singer Gene Pharr, a 2016 Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame inductee, leads with his silky-smooth voice supported with the tightness of the rhythm section and flowing melodies of the horn line. As many of you know, I spent the first 29 years of my life in Kentucky. Since I lived only about three hours or less from Lexington and Louisville, my culture was around thoroughbreds, basketball, and bourbon – with a mixture of tobacco fields. Even though my experiences were limited to basketball, these other influences were always in the background. With that said, let me pass on a story I heard.
At the celebration of the Buffalo Trace Distillery’s six-millionth barrel, Julian Van Winkle Jr. handed a legendary tour guide, Freddie Johnson, a bottle of 20-year-old Pappy’s – an expensive and rare gift. He was to use it to celebrate with his dad and brother. That night they opened it, and when Freddie tried to save some for a future time, his dad stopped him. He told his son there would always be more old bourbon, but not more of them. He said,” We are the fragile part of this whole thing.” So, that night they sat, talked, laughed and finished the bottle. Nine months later, both his father and his brother were gone—leaving Freddie with the line that’s now famous: “It’s not about the whiskey. It’s about the lives you touch and the people you meet.”
Why do I tell you this? Deer season is upon us. For years, I have witnessed landowner after landowner, and many selfish hunters, try to protect their deer at the expense of a youth, new, or even old hunter. They have deemed the most fragile part of this process to be the animals and not the lives of those they could forever impact. And there is no doubt there will be some hunter who will not be with us next year. Remember my friends, it’s not about the deer. It’s about the lives you touch and the people you meet. Adjust accordingly.

On Thursday, August 28, 2025 Cleveland Community College hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the new location of C19, the college’s public access television channel.
During the event, CCC President Dr. Jason Hurst recognized Dorothy “Dot” Roark, whose leadership and vision were instrumental in the channel’s creation more than 40 years ago.
Since 2009, C19 has operated from the John O. Harris, Jr. Broadcast Studio in the Bailey Allied Health Center. Over the years, the channel’s programming needs evolved, and the college made the decision to relocate the studio to a more visible area on campus. “This fabulous new space will allow us to continue producing community-based and educational programming for years to
while freeing up approximately 10,000 square feet in the Bailey Center for expansion of CCC’s growing health sciences programs. Renovations to the former studio space include adding a second floor, allowing the college to admit up to 200 Associate Degree Nursing and 60 Practical Nursing students. It will also allow expansion of other health sciences programs such as radiography, surgical technology, and medical sonography.
The celebration also honored Roark, who began her career at CCC—then Cleveland County Technical Institute—in 1971. She was pivotal in shaping the college’s public voice, launching C19, and building the advancement program that later became the Cleveland Community College Foundation. Her legacy will continue through the Dorothy Mulder Roark Endowed Fund, established through her estate gift pledge, which will support C19 and sustain the high standards of pro-
gramming and production she helped establish. “Dot’s pioneer spirit, along with her talent, skill and training, helped elevate the image of

A single butterfly possesses what may be one of creation’s most remarkable visual systems. Those seemingly simple black dots on either side of its head contain thousands of individual lenses - up to 17,000 in some species - each contributing to a mosaic of vision that far surpasses human sight. These compound eyes can detect ultraviolet patterns invisible to us, perceive rapid movement with stunning clarity, and see in nearly all directions simultaneously. In this intricate design, we discover profound truths about how God desires us to see.
Seeing Beyond the Visible Spectrum
Perhaps most remarkably, butterflies can see ultraviolet light patterns completely invisible to human eyes. Flowers that appear plain white to us burst with intricate ultraviolet guides and landing strips when viewed through butterfly vision. This supernatural sight speaks to the spiritual discernment God offers His children. Paul prays in Ephesians 1:18 that “And [I pray] that the eyes of your heart [the very center
and core of your being] may be enlightened [flooded with light by the Holy Spirit], so that you will know and cherish the hope [the divine guarantee, the confident expectation] to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints (God’s people),.”
Just as butterflies see beyond the visible spectrum, believers are called to perceive spiritual realities hidden from natural sight. We’re invited to see God’s hand in circumstances, his love in trials, and his provision in apparent lack.
While human eyes focus forward with limited peripheral vision, butterfly compound eyes provide nearly 360-degree awareness. They can simultaneously watch for predators, locate flowers, spot potential mates, and navigate obstacles. This panoramic vision reflects the spiritual awareness God desires for His people. Jesus demonstrated this kind of comprehensive vision throughout His ministry. While traveling through Samaria, He saw the spiritual need of one woman at a well (John 4). While surrounded by pressing multitudes, he felt the faith-filled touch of a desperate woman (Luke 8:43-48).
Christ’s spiritual eyes were always open, always aware, always ready to see what oth-
ers missed. We must cultivate sensitivity to God’s subtle promptings, the gentle conviction of sin, opportunities for ministry, and moments when God is clearly at work around us.
Let’s Pray:
“Father, may your name be praised forever and ever. Thank you for supernatura l vision: help me to see myself and others the way you see us. I pray that I will be aware of your promptings to do what you want done at any given moment. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.”.
CONNECTING TO GOD:
If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today.
Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.
