5th Annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Luncheon in Shelby

Five years ago, Steve Borders of Shelby, had a vision to create an event that would bring together all members of Cleveland County law enforcement for a luncheon to show appreciation for their dedication in protecting and serving the community.

Borders’ unwavering commitment led him to enlist the help of his wife Cindy Borders, his daughter Brandy Curtis, friends Rick and Meda Dixon, his fellow church members at Elizabeth Baptist Church, area businesses, and other

his gratitude for law enforcement officers.

On September 9, 2025, the fifth annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Luncheon was held at Stony Point Farm in Shelby from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Officers from all divisions—including Student Resource Officers, Kings Mountain City Police, Shelby City Police, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, NC Highway Patrol officers, and jail attendants— were among the honored guests.

The setting at Stony Point Farm was picturesque and peaceful, featuring beautiful flowers, trees, a rock fountain, and a historic log cabin.

Upon arrival, officers and guests were greeted by Steve, who personally

expressed his gratitude for their dedication, hard work, and loyalty to the citizens of Cleveland County. “It is simply our way of telling the officers thank you,” Borders said. Everything at the event was donated. Signs were created by Grover Elementary students, and Lloyd Williams provided the food tent. Volunteers from Elizabeth Baptist Church and Pleasant City Church prepared and served food. Ingles Grocery Store contributed hot dogs, which were served alongside homemade trimmings and pound cakes for dessert.

Jerry and Joyce Gardner brought their Orangeaid/Lemonade truck to provide free beverages. Jerry shared, “These officers have a

hard job, and I am sure there are many days they go home depressed from situations they have become involved with or things they have witnessed. I think it is important to acknowledge that and take the time to thank them.”

Bojangles also showed support. Area Manager Christine Collins and Natasha Teal distributed gift cards to officers so they could enjoy a meal at a later date. “We just want them to understand they do not go unnoticed,”

Collins said.

The impact of reading on personal health

Books transport people to different times, provide a sense of escapism and introduce readers to different schools of thought. Individuals may read for pleasure and/or to expand their intellectual horizons.

It’s important to note that reading also may help improve mental and physical health. With so much to gain from reading, now is a great time to embrace those book clubs, resolve to read more and explore how picking up a good book may be just what the doctor ordered.

Reduces stress

Immersing yourself in a story requires focus and concentration.

According to researchers at the University of Sussex, it took just six minutes of reading for study participants to experience slower heart rates and reduced muscle tension.

Stress is one of the biggest threats to overall health, as the stress hormone cortisol can lead to inflammation in the body that may impede the immune system, according to Piedmont Health. Finding ways to reduce

stress, including through activities like reading, is a win for anyone who wants to improve his or her health.

Impacts longevity

According to the 2016 study, “A chapter a day: Association of book reading with longevity,” by Bavishi A, Slade M.D., reading exerts its influence on longevity by strengthening the mind. Reading positively impacts the way the brain creates synapses, optimizing neurological function. It also expands vocabulary, and helps with memory.

Changes the brain

A 2014 study published in Neuroreport determined reading involves a complex system of signaling and networking in the brain. As one’s ability to read matures, these networks become stronger and more sophisticated. MRI scans found that brain connectivity increased throughout studied reading periods and for days afterward.

Increases empathy

Through literary fiction, readers are exposed to the situations, feelings

and beliefs of others. This can help a person develop a greater ability to empathize with others, according to Healthiline.

Helps improve sleep

Reading is an effective way to wind down and relax before going to bed. It can be a positive nighttime ritual, provided one reads a paper book or utilizes an e-reader that is not backlit, as bright lights from digital devices may hinder sleep quality. In fact, doctors at the Mayo Clinic often suggest reading as part of a regular sleep routine.

Reduces depressive feelings

Individuals diagnosed with depression may feel isolated and estranged from other people. Books may reduce those feelings by helping a person temporarily escape his or her world into another. Also, books can serve as a common ground through which conversations over shared interests can begin with others.

Reading has many positive health benefits, which is why resolving to read more can be beneficial.

Fraser, who has served for 27 years, praised the community, saying, “We have a very supportive community as a whole. We are aware our community supports us, and we are proud of that. Events like this simply reinforce that support.”

Chief Childress of Kings Mountain City Police highlighted one of law enforcement’s challenges, stating, “We work as a team in law enforcement and face difficult situations each day, but one of the most difficult is helping displaced individuals with mental health issues or nearing a breakdown. These individuals need to get help, and we need to get them to the proper help.” He also added, “This is a wonderful event. I enjoy the time with the wonderful people here, as well as the great food.”

Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman emphasized the value of the event: “I feel this event is a wonderful way to reinforce appreciation and support of our officers. There simply isn’t enough pay to compensate an individual who puts his or her life on the line daily for the safety and welfare of our citizens. This event is a wonderful way to show our officers that the community supports them, and I cannot say enough good

about the impact of this event and the people who participate.”

Also present was NC State Senator Ted Alexander, who came to show his appreciation for Cleveland County law enforcement. “This event is a wonderful way to support those who put their life on the line daily so selflessly,” Alexander said. He added, “In my opinion, an officer should never be criticized for taking the daily necessary steps needed to support the community. That criticism should not be placed on the very individuals who hold our community together.”

In closing, Brandy Curtis spoke about instilling respect for law enforcement at an early age, emphasizing the role of family and schools.

“Sometimes, children do not understand that officers are their friends and are here to help, not just to arrest or appear when someone is in trouble. We have a wonderful Student Resource Officer, Brett Canipe, who has been with our school for seven years. He has been such

a positive presence, and many of the children admire him. This type of person creates a positive influence in children and helps shape their view of authority in a healthy way. We are so fortunate that Officer Canipe is part of our staff at Grover Elementary.”

ARTISAN BREAD

All you need are 4 simple ingredients to make this Artisan Bread. Chewy on the inside with a crispy exterior, this homemade bread recipe is so easy, anyone can make it!

Prep Time 3 hours

Cook Time 45 minutes

Equipment: Dutch oven Ingredients

3 ¾ cups bread flour divided (450 grams)

2¼ teaspoons instant yeast

1¾ teaspoons kosher salt (10 grams)

1 ½ cups warm water between 120°F and 130°F (360 grams)

1. In a large mixing bowl, add flour, yeast, and salt, stirring to combine with a large wooden spoon. Stir in water until the mixture is very sticky, and no lumps of flour remain. Cover and place in a warm, draft-free area until doubled in size, about 1 ½ to 2 hours.

2. For an overnight rise: After mixing the dough, cover and refrigerate until doubled in size. This will take about 8 hours but will keep in the fridge up to 24 hours total.

3. Preheat the oven to 450°F. Place a large Dutch oven with a lid in the oven for at least 30 minutes.

4. If Using Overnight Rise

Method: Remove the dough from the refrigerator and let rest at room temperature for 15 minutes.

5. Using lightly floured hands,

reach down one side of the dough to the bottom of the bowl, pull up, and stretch the edge of the dough over the center toward the opposite side. Turn the bowl 90 degrees and repeat the folding and turning, working in a circle around the dough until the dough starts to hold its shape, about 8 to 10 rotations. Pinch any seams together at the center of the dough ball.

6. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface, placing it seam side down. Shape into a round loaf. Transfer the dough onto parchment paper and sprinkle it with flour. Loosely cover with plastic wrap or a tea towel for 10 minutes.

7. Using a sharp knife or bread lame, cut a slit about ¼-inch deep across the top of the dough. Very carefully place the dough with the parchment paper directly into the preheated Dutch oven. Cover with the lid.

8. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and bake until deeply golden brown, about 15 to 17 minutes more. Carefully remove

the bread from the Dutch oven using the parchment paper to help, and place on a wire rack to cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing. Notes

• Make sure to check your water temperature before adding it to the dry ingredients. If the water is too hot, you risk killing the yeast. However, if the water is too cold, it won’t activate the yeast.

• For a more robust flavor, refrigerate the dough overnight as it develops more flavor the longer it is refrigerated.

• Do not skip the parchment paper as it helps you move the dough in and out of the dutch oven. It also prevents the bread from burning and sticking to the bottom of the pot.

• Avoid adding too much flour to the dough by measuring your flour correctly! Adding too much flour to the recipe is the most common mistake leading to dense bread. The best way to measure flour is by using a scale. If you don’t have one, then fluff your flour with a spoon, sprinkle it into your measuring cup, and use a knife to level it off.

• Make sure you are using a large enough bowl for the dough. The dough should double in size as it rises. The same goes for the dutch oven!

• Make sure you’re using a large enough Dutch oven as the bread rises as it bakes.

• Don’t worry too much about making sure the dough is perfectly round. Since it’s artisan bread, it’s meant to look a little rustic. Any uneven bits give you more crispy ridges.

GERMAN SWEET CHOCOLATE CHIP

POUND CAKE

The recipe comes from “The Cake Mix Doctor” book by Anne Byrn.

1 (4oz.) bar, German sweet chocolate

1 box yellow cake mix

1 (3.4 oz) box vanilla instant pudding

1 c whole milk

1 c vegetable oil

4 large egss

1 c semi-sweet chocolate chips

1. Place rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 325’F. Spray a 10” tube pan (or three 8” loaf pans) with cooking spray, then dust with flour. Shake out excess flour and set aside.

2. Break the German chocolate bar into four pieces. Grate the bar using a food processor or a hand grater until it is finely grated. (If using a food processor, insert the steel blade and drop the chocolate pieces into the processor one at a time.) Set aside. (Time-saver tip- I found out, recently, that you can also melt the chocolate, and I’m thinking this has got to be easier!)

3. Place the cake mix, pudding mix, milk, oil, and eggs in a large mixing bowl.

Blend with an electric mixer on low for 1 minute. Fold in the grated chocolate, and scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Increase the mixer speed to medium and beat 2 minutes more scraping the sides down again if needed. Fold in the chocolate chips. The batter should look well blended and the chocolate chips should be evenly distributed. Pour the

batter into prepared tube pan (or loaf pans), smoothing out with the rubber spatula. Place pan in oven.

4. Bake until golden brown and the center springs back when lightly pressed with your finger, 55-58 minutes for tube pan (50-52 minutes for loaf pans). Remove from the oven and place it on a wire rack to cool for 20 minutes for tube pan (5-8 minutes for loaves).

5. Run a long, sharp knife around the edge of the cake and invert it onto a rack, then invert it again onto a cake/ serving plate so it is right side up. Allow to cool 30 minutes more. Dust with confectioner’s sugar if desired.

What pet owners should know about heartworm

Pets owners go to great lengths to ensure their animal companions are happy and healthy. Nutritious diets and routine visits to a veterinarian are two ways to keep pets healthy. Pet owners also can educate themselves about various conditions that can adversely affect their pets’ health, including heartworm.

What is heartworm?

The American Heartworm Society notes heartworm is a potentially fatal disease caused by foot-long worms that can live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets. A pet affected by heartworm can develop severe lung disease, heart failure and organ damage.

Are all pets vulnerable to heartworm?

The American Veterinary Medical Association® reports that heartworm primarily infects dogs, cats and ferrets. However, wild animals like foxes and wolves also can be infected, as can animals like raccoons and opossums that many people see in their backyards and local parks. Humans also have been infected with heartworm, though the AVMA® notes such instances are rare. Heartworm and dogs

The AHS notes dogs are a natural host for heartworms. Heartworms that live inside a dog can mature into adults and even mate and produce offspring while inside the dog. Numbers increase if the dog is not treated for heartworm. Even if a dog

is treated, the effects of heartworm infection can linger after the worms are gone, contributing to lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries.

Symptoms of heartworm infection in dogs may not manifest early on. The AHS notes that it’s more likely symptoms will develop the longer the infection persists. Such symptoms may include:

• A mild, persistent cough

• Reluctance to exercise

• Fatigue after moderate activity

• Decreased appetite

• Weight loss

According to the AHM, active dogs, dogs with heavy heartworm infections or those with additional health problems

frequently exhibit pronounced clinical signs.

Heartworm and cats

The AVMA notes diagnosis of heartworm in cats is more difficult than it is with dogs. Unlike dogs, cats are not natural hosts for heartworms, and the AHS reports most worms in cats do not make it to the adult stage. In fact, many cats with heartworm have no adult worms. That contributes to the difficulty of diagnosis, and it does not protect cats against harmful side effects of heartworm, including a condition known as heartworm associated respiratory disease (HARD).

The AHS notes that signs of heartworm in cats can be subtle or

very dramatic. Sadly, the AHS also reports that the first sign of heartworm in some cases is the sudden collapse or sudden death of the cat. If cats exhibit symptoms, those signs may include:

• Coughing

• Attacks that mimic an asthma attack

• Periodic vomiting

• Lack of appetite

• Weight loss

• Difficulty walking

• Fainting or seizures

• Fluid accumulation in the abdomen

Heartworm poses a potentially serious threat to cats and dogs. Pet owners are urged to speak with their veterinarians about heartworm prevention and what to do if a pet becomes infected.

Signs it’s time to replace gutters

Home improvement projects run the gamut from complex undertakings like room additions to simpler renovations like a new front door. Some home renovations excite homeowners more than others, but all improvements are a way to make a home safer, more comfortable and/or more functional.

A gutter replacement might not inspire the same level of excitement as a room addition or an overhaul of an outdoor living space, but new gutters can help to prevent roof damage and make properties safer by ensuring rain water is directed away from walkways. Homeowners who suspect it might be time for a gutter replacement can look for these signs of fading gutters.

even produce noticeable rust flakes on the ground below. Rust on gutters and rust flakes beneath them are indicative of gutters that need to be replaced.

• Gutters pulling away from the home: Gutters that appear to be pulling away from the home is a sign that they need to be replaced. Gutters are fastened to a home during installation, which ensures they can withstand rain and water. Over time, those fasteners can wear down, ultimately leading to gutters that appear to be pulling away from the home. Though gutters can be refastened, eventually they will need to be replaced.

• Pooling water: Pooling water in a gutter may just be a sign that gutters need to be cleaned. However, pooling water on the ground directly beneath gutters indicates they’re not effectively directing water away from the home.

• Cracks or splits: Cracks or splits at the seams of the gutters where two pieces connect is a telltale sign they need to be replaced. Cracks or splits are can slowly lead to separation of gutter pieces, which will lead to leaks. But not all cracks or splits are found at the seams. In fact, some homes feature seamless gutters, which also can crack or split. Regardless of where they’re found, cracks or splits are a warning signs of fading gutters.

• Rust: Rust is rarely a good sign whether you’re looking at a vehicle or even garden tools. Rust also is a bad sign in relation to gutters. Gutters are painted, and not only for aesthetic purposes. Paint on gutter also serves to protect them from water. When paint begins to flake, gutters will begin to rust and may

• Water damage inside: A home’s interior might not be the first place homeowners look when inspecting for damaged gutters, but a flooded basement or crawl space could indicate a gutter problem. Gutters and downspouts are designed to direct water away from a home when functioning properly. When that isn’t happening, water can pool beneath the foundation, leading to pooling water and other water damage in basements and crawl spaces.

Gutter replacement projects may not be exciting, but new gutters can make a home safer and prolong the life of a roof and other features on a property

Activities that can promote cardiovascular health

Resolving to be physically active is an important step towards heart health and overall well-being. Exercise is one of the most effective tools for strengthening the heart and avoiding various illnesses, including high cholesterol, that can affect cardiovascular health, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Oct. 15, 2025 - Dec. 7, 2025 • Age 65 & Up or Under 65 & Disabled Nov. 1, 2025 - Jan. 15, 2026 • Under 65 and You Need Health Insurance

E. Marion Street, Shelby, NC 704-477-1426

Although any exercise can be beneficial, there is a fitness recipe designed to be the most effective for strengthening the heart and helping it to work to its ful potential. Here are the guidelines recommended by the American Heart Association and Johns Hopkins Medicine.

• Get 150 minutes per week or more of moderateintensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, or a combination of both. These activities can include running, cycling, swimming, and others that will get the heart pumping.

• Incorporate moderateto high-intensity musclestrengthening activity at least two days a week.

• Strength training should be designed to work the

entire body. It doesn’t have to be traditional weightlifting, either. Body weight exercises, yoga, Pilates, and even tai chi can build strength and offer additional benefits like improving balance.

• Consider HIIT exercises. HIIT stands for highintensity interval training, which involves exercising as hard as one can for a short period, and then resting briefly before exercising hard again for a short period. While there are many different HIIT programs, UT Southwestern Medical Center says a popular one involves exercising hard for four minutes, followed by three minutes of recovery time, for four cycles total.

• While stretching, flexibility and balance exercises do not directly affect heart health, they do help one stay flexible and free from joint pain and other issues that can sideline a person from exercise. Doing what one can to protect against falls and reduce risk of being sedentary will benefit the heart in the long run.

• Don’t discount everyday activities in relation to how they can enhance heart health. Walking, gardening, playing with children, or tossing a ball to a family pet are beneficial aerobic activities.

Heart health is something to take seriously, and exercise plays a key role in strengthing the heart.

One of the best places to put up a tree stand or blind is in a funnel. A funnel is a small area where two or more ridges run out or down into a small hollow or trail. If you can imagine the dip between two crests, you will understand what a funnel is. It is basically the easiest route for deer, or any other animal, to travel. And like you and I, most animals look for what takes the least effort and expends the least amount of energy. Not only does this apply to travel routes, but it also applies to food. Just watch any bear or raccoon and you will see how they will opt for a free and easy meal even if it is found in your garage or trash can. And, as you also know as well, it is these easy meals that cause many of these critters, to be caught or killed. While we admire some of the special characteristics of many of the animal kingdom, in some ways they are just like us. They had rather get whatever they can with the least amount of cost. For followers of Christ, this is also a temptation. While I am the first to proclaim the freedom that grace affords, in full disclosure, being a follower of Christ will at times call you to take the more difficult path. And at times it will cost a price others may not have to pay. You may have to give up the hate you so want to hold on to, to love the one who is unlovable. You may have to give up the revenge you want to exact, to give the forgiveness God wants you to give. You may have to give up criticism to show the kindness that comes from the Spirit. Sometimes, you will have to give up your opinion to keep your influence. All of these are not done so someone can applaud your goodness, but for the hope that someone will embrace your savior. And we all should ask the question, “What am I willing to give up so that more people would choose Jesus?” This sounds simple. Some will say, “I am willing to die for my faith!” But that is the easy part. The real question is “What am I willing to live with if more would choose Jesus?” Would you live in communism if more people would choose Jesus? Would you live without the freedom to assemble? Or without free speech? Would you give up your right to own a gun? Or to hunt? You see, the decision to live for our faith is sometimes more sacrificial than the decision to die for it. And it may be a better reflection of the priority my faith holds in my life. The faith funnels are easy and predictable. But they are not the path we may always be able to take.
