Planning and development are underway on a proposed project in Gaston County that would improve approximately 10 miles of Interstate 85 (I-85) from the U.S. 321 interchange (Exit 17) at Groves Street in Gastonia to the NC 273 interchange (Exit 27) at Beatty Drive in Mount Holly. The work would involve widening I-85 in the project area from six to eight lanes, upgrading interchanges, and relocating or replacing roadway and railroad bridges.
The widening project aims to improve congestion and traffic along a heavily traveled artery connecting Cleveland and Mecklenburg Counties, according to information from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) website.
The I-85 widening project will significantly impact adjacent property owners along the route, who could lose property and land rights and face easements and appraisals initiated under Eminent Domain actions. Eminent Domain allows the government to seize private property in the public interest.
Under the 5th amendment, the government may exercise its right to seize property against a landowner's will in a process called "condemnation," provided the taking is for a "public use" and the government provides "just compensation."
According to NC-Eminent-Domain.com, property owners involved in an eminent domain dispute could face several issues. If a government takes your property and forces you to move, your relocation costs should be covered. They likely won't offer this compensation; You must fight for it. Home or business condemned? That means the government is suing you, which may lead to a court case. Other issues surround inverse condemnation, where the government or utility project infringes on your property, easements involving your rights to own and control the land in question, and appraisals for the value of your property.
I-85, a critical stretch of highway connecting Gastonia to other cities and towns in Gaston County, including Kings Mountain, serves as a vital corridor for commuters
within the Charlotte metropolitan area. The proposed improvements aim to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow along this essential route.
Due to its proximity, construction schedule, and association with I-85, the proposed work also includes an additional project to improve the intersection of U.S. 29/74 and NC 7.
The final highway expansion design was completed earlier this year, and construction is expected to be finished by 2030. The widening project is expected to cost $624.4 million, according to the NCDOT at https:// www.ncdot.gov/projects/i85-widening-gaston-county/ Pages/default.aspx.
A free virtual seminar starting at 7:00 p.m. on July 10 will provide information to Gaston property owners affected by the I-85 widening project. Hosted by the statewide firm, James Scott Farrin, the seminar will address the impact on more than 100 parcels of residential and commercial property in Gaston County.

A happy and healthy pet can be a wonderful addition to a home. The unconditional love that companion animals provide is often well worth the devotion of time and resources that goes into e nsuring pets live happy and healthy lives.
Oral health care is one of the common areas of pet health that some pet parents overlook, but it is just as important as other wellness issues. The American Veterinary Medical Association advises that dental health is a very important part of pets’ overall health. Dental problems
can cause certain issues, or they can be a byproduct of other health problems. Understanding some of the conditions that can affect pets’ teeth and gums may compel their owners to take swift action if such issues arise.
Gum diseases
Bacterial infections of the gums and other oral tissue can cause inflammation of the gums. If periodontal disease is untreated, Merck Veterinary Manual says tooth loss can occur.
Gum disease is caused by bacteria that leads to the formation of plaque at the gum line. Pet owners should be diligent in brushing their pets’ teeth to reduce bacteria. Eating crunchy foods and treats alone will not clean teeth. Veterinarians also may recommend routine dental scaling treatments, particularly for breeds that are at elevated risk for periodontal disease.
Broken teeth and roots are most often caused when pets bite into something that is too hard. The Cornell Richard P. Riney Canine Health Center says pet owners should employ the “fingernail test” on pet toys. In this test, one should be able to make a dent in the item with a fingernail to mark it as safe as a chew toy. Antlers, hooves and bones may fracture teeth. Pets also should not be allowed to chomp down on ice cubes.
Teeth also may become fractured through rough play, such as a tug-of-war session with a toy. Pet owners should carefully gauge the pressure at which they play such games.
Tumors
Oral tumors are abnormal growths that can form in pets’ mouths. Some tumors are benign, while others are malignant and can spread. All unusual growths should be checked out by a veterinarian. VCA Animal Hospi-
tals says male dogs seem to be twice as likely to develop oral cancer than female dogs. Also, Akitas, Cocker Spaniels, Boxers, Dachsunds, Doberman Pinschers, Golden Retrievers, and Poodles are among the breeds that seem to be predisposed to
oral cancers. Bad breath
The most common cause of bad breath in pets is periodontal disease. Having pets’ teeth cleaned and staying current on oral hygiene can help.
Additional causes of bad breath may include poor
kidney or liver health, as the pet may be having issues filtering waste out of its body, says Apple Valley Animal Hospital.
Routine vet visits can alert pet owners to potential oral health issues. Taking dental care seriously can help keep pets healthy.
Part 3 of “Freedom in Christ” Series)
Many today still struggle with putting barriers between themselves and God’s love.
Religious traditions and personal beliefs can sometimes become obstacles, causing believers to focus on what they think is righteous rather than trusting in the miraculous work of Jesus. We can become like the Pharisees, overly obsessed with rules that do not truly lead us to Christ. Jesus wasn’t pleased with them. In Matthew 23:4 (NLT) he exclaims, “They tie up heavy, cumbersome burdens and lay them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.” Instead of guiding others toward grace, they created a system of religious obligations that kept people in bondage. Instead, we are called to embrace the freedom Jesus offers - a freedom rooted in relationship and grace.
Legalism or Liberty
The early church faced similar challenges. Acts 15 recounts a pivotal moment when certain believers from Judea insisted that Gentile converts needed to be circumcised and adhere to the
Law of Moses in order to be saved. Paul and Barnabas strongly opposed this view, understanding that salvation comes solely through faith in Jesus Christ. During the gathering in Jerusalem, James emphasized that God’s intention was to welcome the Gentiles openly, without placing any extra restrictions or burdens on them. In Acts 15:19 (AMP) he proclaimed, “We should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God.” This decision reflected the core truth: in Christ, our relationship with God is based on faith, not on human rules or rituals.
Ignorance & Fear Hindrances
In John 9:13-16, Jesus heals a man born blind. The religious leaders questioned him, not to understand the miracle but to criticize Jesus. Their focus was on maintaining their religious standards rather than celebrating God’s power. Sometimes, people criticize what they do not understand, especially supernatural acts like speaking in tongues, healing, or deliverance. These are biblical and evidence of God’s supernatural work. Yet, fear and ignorance often cause believers to mock or dismiss these gifts. When we encounter something unfamiliar or supernatural, instead of rejecting it outright, we should pray
and seek God’s understanding. Asking, “Lord, if this is of You, help me understand,” opens our hearts to learn and grow. Not everything we see or experience will be immediately clear, but God is faithful to reveal His truth to those who seek Him sincerely. When we accept God’s love and His supernatural power, we find peace and gratitude. Let us embrace the freedom Christ offers: free from religious burdens, filled with His supernatural love and power.
Let’s Pray: “ Father, You alone are worthy of my praise and honor. Thank You for the Bible which instructs us in righteousness. Teach me Your ways so that we won’t get caught up in legalism. Help me to embrace Your supernatural ways even when I don’t understand it. I love and trust You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

Even though it’s only July, the deer hunters are getting prepared for another season. While it may be several weeks until the season opens, there is much to do to be ready for opening day – especially if you hunt with bow and arrow. Right now, I’m checking trail cameras, hanging tree stands and trying to figure out where the deer are likely to be early in the season. And it is not always where one might think. I am reminded of an Alabama hunt several years ago. I was with a friend on a piece of property that was owned by a rancher who not only raised cattle but managed for quality deer. It really was a beautiful place and just riding around caused me to get extremely excited about the possibilities. That afternoon would be our first hunt, so the rancher “carried us” (that’s Alabama vernacular for drove us) to the stands we would hunt. As we passed through the pasture he pointed to one lone cedar tree about 200 yards from a wood line and said, “Somebody needs to sit right there.” My partner and I silently wondered where exactly he was talking about. And then he said, “See that blue milk crate? Sit on it and lean up against that cedar tree.” Now this was not exactly the place where either of us imagined we would spend our time hunting. After all, it didn’t look like or feel like it had any possibility whatsoever of producing anything but shade for an afternoon nap. I was expecting my tree stand to be labeled Lone Wolf or something, but this one said Mayfield Dairy. After debating on which one of us would have this honor, my friend drew the short straw and jumped out of the truck (boy was I relieved!). That evening he killed a giant 11 pointer and another buck with an even wider rack that next morning. Who would’ve ever “thunk” it? The moral of the story: It is better to take the word of the rancher than go to with what feels good or looks good. Period! I wished we would focus more on that same truth in our experience with God.
Gary Miller gary@outdoortruths.org
Let me ask you something. Do you have to feel the presence of God to know He is there? Or are you satisfied with His simple word that says, “I will never leave you or forsake you?” Do you need to see some manifestation of His workings to believe He is at work? Or can you simply believe His word when He says, “I am working all things for your good?” On Sunday morning as you sit in church, do you base the quality of your experience on what you may have felt or seen? Or do you understand that true faith simply believes His word, sometimes without any emotions whatsoever? Your answers to these questions will expose the depth of your faith. Is God’s word good enough? Or does it need to be scotched up with something that appeals to the senses. I hope you are someone who will simply take God at His word and get out of the truck even when it seems He is placing you on a milk crate.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Aging is partnering with the N.C. area agencies on aging and local service providers to distribute fans to eligible recipients through Operation Fan Heat Relief from May 1 to Oct. 31. Cleveland County is in Region C – Foothills Regional Commission. Contact Director Laura Lynch by calling 828-351-2336 or emailing LLynch@regionc.org.
People 60 and older, as well as adults with disabilities, are eligible to sign up for assistance from May 1 to Oct. 31 at local aging agencies across the state. Since 1986, the relief program has purchased fans for older adults and adults with disabilities, providing them with a more comfortable living environment and reducing heat-related illnesses.
The program is made possible by donations from Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress, Dominion, and Valassis. Operation Fan Heat Relief allows regional area agencies on aging and local provider agencies to purchase fans for eligible individuals. Local provider agencies can also purchase a limited number of air conditioners based on a person’s specific health conditions.
impact of extreme heat. Operation Fan Heat Relief helps vulnerable adults at risk for heat-related illnesses stay safe during the summer.
In addition to applying for fans, people aged 60 and older, as well as adults with disabilities, can take the following steps during high temperatures:
Increase fluid intake
Spend time in cool or air-conditioned environments regularly
Reduce strenuous activity during the afternoon
Speak with their physician before summer about how to stay safe while taking medication that can affect the body's ability to cool itself (e.g., high blood pressure medications)
For more details, individuals may contact their area agency on aging or the Division of Aging at 919-855-3400.
Last year, the division received $86,000 in donations, allowing for the distribution of 3,097 fans and 21 air conditioners.
As individuals age and develop chronic medical conditions, they are less likely to sense and respond to changes in temperature, and they may also be taking medications that can worsen the

Caroline Sparrow is a rising 11th-grader at Kings Mountain High School. She has an interest in anesthesiology and wanted to find out if that’s the right career path for her. The new Summer Bridge program held recently at Gardner-Webb University gave her a hands-on introduction to anesthesiology along with various other healthcare professions.
Sparrow, with the help of Certified Registered Nurse
Anesthetist Kaitlin Benedict from Atrium Health Cleveland, intubated a mannequin and was amazed by the realistic procedure. Her friend, Tristian Ballard, also a rising 11th-grader at Kings Mountain High School, was excited to perform the intubation as well. Motivated by his mother’s determination and success, Ballard has already decided that he wants to be a nurse.
“I saw her go to school later in her life,” he offered. “She wanted to be a nurse when she was a lot younger, but she never got the chance. She went back recently, and I saw her do that and learned a little bit about it and she was a big inspiration to me.”
The intubation activity was part of a career fair, where the students rotated to different stations to learn about several types of health professions. Sparrow and Ballard also practiced surgical techniques using a simulator provided by Cleveland Community College Surgical Technology Program. They participated in other learning experiences during the week and received third-party credentialing in CPR and Stop the Bleed, making them more prepared to advance in
their education and careers. The immersive experience was offered two separate weeks and welcomed a total of 26 students. It was made possible by funding from the Golden LEAF Foundation Community-Based Grants Initiative. Gardner-Webb collaborated with community partners, Cleveland Community College (CCC) and Cleveland County Schools to secure a total of over $1.2 million to offer the camp for high schoolers as part of a Healthcare Educational Pathway. Leaders from all three entities presented separate proposals to form this plan to address regional health workforce shortages, particularly in nursing and allied health professions.
Associate Professor of Nursing Dr. Jessica Ivey and Assistant Professor of Nursing Dr. Angel Queen coordinated the Summer Bridge program and were enthused about the inquisitive and interested students who attended. “We've worked really hard the past couple months to prepare a curriculum for these students over the last four days,” Ivey observed. “They are loving it. We have introduced students to a variety of different healthcare professions—pharmacy, nursing, physical therapy— and we’re hoping that this will help them make decisions and continue to stay here in Cleveland County and have a career. We are excited, and we're excited to do this again next year.”
Queen further addressed the goals of the program and the importance of exposing young people to opportunities in their hometowns. “There's so much that Cleveland County offers with
them being able to do a lot of studying in high school,” she asserted. “Exposing them early to how they can get their associate degree or get their bachelor's degree and even move up to master’s or doctoral programs helps them set those shortterm and long-term goals, and how to achieve those. A lot of times, you just have to plant that seed. And then, you have all of us that help support and water and help that grow into whatever they decide to be when they grow up. We need different providers in different areas and different specialties, and so it's so important that we foster these young students, and we expose them to all the
different avenues that they can do.”
Sparrow and Ballard said they appreciated all the opportunities the week provided, including staying in a residence hall on Gardner-Webb’s campus. “It's actually good because I feel like it pushes me to want to do more for my own education,” Sparrow shared. “It’s really special because we didn’t have to pay for any of this.”
Ballard added, “I enjoyed the campus the most. It's a beautiful campus. I learned a lot about being a nurse, and what type of nurses there are and what I have to do to become a nurse.”
And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this? John 11:26
