Shelby Mission Camp’s garden spreads love and lettuce

Enthusiastic volunteers, welltilled soil, and a desire to serve God and grow vegetables for deserving devourers all adds up to characterize the work going on at the Shelby Mission Camp’s garden at 302 Sharpton Dr.

The garden is a lovingly tended half-acre plot located on the camp’s 40-acre property.

The camp was started in 2010 and operates under the umbrella of the Baptists on a Mission organization which is a part of the Baptist State Convention of NC.

The garden is three years old. Its official name is 410 Farm. The name comes from the 1st John Bible verse 4:10 - Jesus answered and said unto her, “If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.”

Robbie Alexander is the camp coordinator. He explained the project’s primary purpose.

“We grow produce and provide it to the local food pantries we partner with,” he said.

Just a few of the pantries include Ross Grove Baptist in Shelby and Union Baptist near Polkville.

The range of veggies that come out of the garden is impressive. Last week saw perfectly aligned rows of goodness growing in the rich soil.

“We grow kale, lettuce, collards, broccoli, tomatoes, corn, beans, and chard to name a few,” Alexander said. “Last year we grew 6,000 pounds of vegetables. This year we are hoping to grow 8,000 pounds. We are off to a good start. We have about 250 tomato plants. 100

pepper plants, and a good mix of cool season stuff.”

The garden is grown yearround.

“As long as stuff grows, we distribute it,” said Alexander.

Volunteers are the backbone of the garden and its mission. Volunteers include church groups, students, and individuals. They come from both Carolinas and other states as far away as Michigan.

“We have hundreds of volunteers,” Alexander said. “They eat and sleep at the camp.”

Last week saw a group of around 40 student volunteers from Morganton-area churches working on the garden. Baptist churches represented included Missionary Ridge, Amherst, Pleasant Hill, and East Valdese. Missionary Ridge youth pastor Michael McIntosh talked See GARDEN, Page 2

about the benefits of coming to Shelby.

“The garden is a good outreach,” he said. “It lets the students learn about gardening and serves the Lord. This is our second year coming here.”

A Shelby resident and retiree, Bob Osburn was also manning a hoe.

“This is what the Lord called me to do,” he said. “I enjoy teaching the young people about farming.”

Expanding on its agricultural associations, Shelby Mission Camp also partners with other volunteer groups such as the Cleveland County Potato Project to grow and distribute vegetables. The future looks bright for Shelby Mission camp and its work in the garden.

In addition to the garden, Shelby Mission camp also sends out volunteers on a variety of other projects to help the community. This includes building handicapped ramps and helping elderly

“Hopefully we will be able to expand the garden,” said Alexander. “That way we grow more food, host more volunteers, and help feed more families.

We have treasured serving you and being a part of your lives.

You followed us as we moved locations from our original Cleveland Mall location.

You fed our food to your children and they grew strong. Now those children are grown and bring their own children.

We’ve made many friends and lost some through the years.

We watched Shelby grow and change.

We will miss seeing y’all every day. Thank you for the memories!

How can someone prove to themselves that they have the skills and traits needed to achieve bold dreams? How can a person demonstrate that they are worthy of trust and friendship? These questions capture the inner conflicts that Bilbo Baggins (Bridget Allen), a quiet, unassuming Hobbit, faces in The Hobbit when an ancient wizard named Gandalf (Kevin Burke) sends him on an adventure with 13 dwarves, led by a moody and mercurial King Thorin Oakenshield (Trey Ross), who have lost their home to a fierce dragon named Smaug.

Many dangers occur along the way, including a run-in with a mysterious creature named Gollum (Sarah Sandoval) and being captured by three hungry Trolls, and Bilbo discovers his values, skills, and courage. His journey suggests that the heroism and strength of even the smallest of folks lie within everyone, and one way to access these inner reserves is to

take life’s challenges headon, even when they bring peril.

Gary Miller has written Outdoor Truths

It was a beautiful morning. The rain was enough to get me wet, but not enough to keep me from pursuing another tom. I did, however, wait until I heard a gobble before I decided where to set up. Therefore, it was breaking day. When I began to move, I heard some hens and thought I was busted. I turned around, went back up to the top of the hill and conferred with myself to determine what plan b would be. Evidently, those hens didn’t see me. Because after a few minutes two of them showed up with two other gobblers. I was about 100 yards away. When they got behind some brush, I quickly set up a few decoys, and settled in, hoping to eventually lure them to me. That next hour was nearly perfect. Not only did I witness these toms strutting their stuff, but at one point a rainbow appeared just over their stage. And that was right before another gobbler decided to join the party. For a few minutes, I was able to ease my gun down, pick up my phone and take pictures and videos of my view. It was a rare morning, and after an extended period, they began to ease my way. Slow but steady. And now only 75 yards away. But then my perfect morning changed. The nearby cattle decided they wanted the grass where my turkeys had congregated. So, they pushed my hopes in the other direction. But what I got that morning was more, and even better, than expected. But for success, I had to be willing to change my weapon from my shotgun to my camera. It’s just what the circumstances demanded. Don’t’ get me wrong, I was pretty upset with a few bovines, but after thinking about what had just transpired, I realized I was the only person invited to this one-day-only production. I thought about the hill that overlooked it all that I sat on, that provided my amphitheater view. I thought about the sun pushing through the rain to paint my rainbow. And I thought about those three toms who performed for my pleasure. I’m not sure why God gave me this particular morning, and why it didn’t end with a dead bird, but I know this. The same God who provided the hens to start it, provided the cows to end it. And I was just there to enjoy it..

Unique gift ideas make Mom feel special Unique gift ideas make Mom feel

From every skinnedup knee when you were small to nearly every celebration throughout life, she is always there. Mothers are consistently there cheering you on and supporting you. Mothers are strong, fearless and kind, and Mother’s Day is your day to give back to them for all they’ve done and show them how much those mo-

ments mean to you. Mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, and many more remarkable women often work tirelessly and without fanfare to provide for their families. Even though they may deserve to be recognized throughout the year, moms enjoy a special day nestled within the month of May when children, spouses and others

celebrate Mother’s Day. Many people give heartfelt gifts on Mother’s Day to express their love for the mothers in their lives. The perfect gift may focus on Mom’s interests and the things that make her truly happy. With that in mind, the following shopping tips can help anyone fi perfect Mother’s Day gift.

• Explore spa packages. What mother won’t benefi from some rest and relaxation with a little pampering thrown in? Salons and massage therapists typically put together Mother’s Day packages that cater to mothers. Packages may include massages, facials, hair treatments, manicures, and pedicures. Gift-givers can customize the services depending on their budgets.

• Dining out can be a treat. A meal at a favorite restaurant can be a welcome change from kitchen duty. Mother’s Day is a busy day for restaurants, many of which have limited menus to better handle the crowds. As a result, if dining out on Mother’s Day, Mom may not get the full menu she desires. Celebrate Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day to my dear wife who is a great mom and to every Mother everywhere!

My brothers and sisters were all gone from home by the time I was eight years old. I missed them but during the summer I had my mother mostly all to myself. My dad worked third shift in the coal mines and slept most of the day. My mother’s main job was keeping me quite so I wouldn’t wake my dad from sleep. Fortunately for him he had built a small place behind our house where he slept during the day. If I

didn’t bounce the basketball and played quietly all went well.

I was close to my mother growing up. My sisters always said, “I was mommy’s baby.” I came along ten years after my other brothers and sisters so probably it was a little easier raising one child than trying to raise my four sisters and brothers all at once.

Life was relatively simple. Some mornings during the summer we had to put bug dust on the bean patch in the garden. Some mornings we hoed corn. We raised hogs and often there were middling’s to make.

We had sulfur drinking water that was unfit for washing clothes. If we

had not caught enough rain water then it meant carrying water from our nearby creek. We had about a hundred yard walk to the creek so we had to make a lot of trips back and forth to the creek for enough water. God forbid if I got busy chasing a crawdad and stirred up the creek water. yard and on more than one occasion she broke off a limb and used what we referred to as a “switch,” on me. I suppose that meant the peach tree limb would assist me in switching my behavior.

However, mom was great. I remember how hard she worked. I know how passionately she loved our family. She took care of my

Fun, fashionable color trends for Mom

Whether you’re looking forward to attending a few special events or have a fun getaway planned, you’re probably wondering what key items you’ll need to add to your wardrobe for summer.

The good news is that there’s no need to overhaul your entire closet. And it’s easier than ever to incorporate on-trend pieces into your outfit of the day.

This season’s most coveted colors are bright hues, pretty pastels and metallic tones, according to Nichole Duck, women’s buyer for fashion-forward retailer, Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse.

Here she shares how to wear on-trend colors for any style.

Metallics as Neutrals

Metallic accessories and footwear provide a versatile option for today’s fashion. Because metallics can mesh with a broad range of color palettes and design styles, they are “the new neutral.”

Ideas to try:

• Select a classic white tshirt, skinny jeans and a pair of metallic slides for a comfy and casual look.

• Wear a long floral dress with metallic sandals featuring rose gold or silver to make a statement.

Bold and Beautiful

From berets to jumpsuits, bright hues are prevalent head to toe this season. Additionally, there’s a resurgence of on-trend apparel and accessories that have undoubtedly been inspired by somewhere over the rainbow.

In fact, rainbow-striped knit tops, athletic track pants, crewneck sweaters and more are now all the rage.

Ideas to try:

• Pair a neutral open-toed sandal with a pleated maxi rainbow skirt.

• Balance casual jeans with a pair of sexy stilettos in a favorite statement color. Vibrant red, ultra violet and electric blue shades can add a charge of energy to any outfit.

Ice Cream Pastels

dad and my four siblings. She loved God and prayed and she loved people. I miss my mom. By God’s grace and mercy I’ll see her again and my dad in heaven.

My children’s mother is also deceased. My sons and I miss her every day and I know they miss her love and devotion. They have now lived most of their lives without their mother. Mother’s Day is a tough day as they can only remember.

If you have a good mother, take a moment this Mother’s Day and praise her. Good words, hugs, and any deed that might make her life a little easier are well deserved. Do something that pleases mom and for one day forget about

yourself.

Maybe your mom and grandma are deceased. On this Mother’s Day maybe there are other special moms

This season, ready-to-wear fashion features a palette of ice cream pastel shades (think yellow sorbet, mint green and lilac hues). The possibilities to incorporate these colors into this season’s outfits are limitless.

Ideas to try:

• Combine a pair of pastel skinny jeans with a neutral kitten-heel for a polished look. Shades of beige, coffee and gray all work well to complement the soft colors.

• Try a fun, pointy-toed pump with a simple camisole and pair of jeans.

“From running errands to enjoying a night on the town, this season’s color options offer variety and versatility for everyone’s personal style,” says Duck.

From head to toe, just a few essential on-trend pieces are all that’s needed to give your entire wardrobe a fresh summer reboot.

(StatePoint)

that you can graciously wish and express to them in some way, “Happy Mother’s Day.” We can’t go wrong celebrating Mother’s Day.

Crafts lead the way for Mother’s Day gifts

other’s Day is a special time for children to show their appreciation for their mothers, grandmothers and the other special women in their lives. Older children

typically are capable of designing their own Mother’s Day crafts or even shopping for gifts for Mom, while younger children will likely need some help from an adult.

Youngsters may not be able to take charge of Mother’s Day festivities alone, but they certainly have the energy and enthusiasm to chip in. Handmade craft gifts are a thoughtful way for young kids to show their love for Mom. Here are a few ideas that can occupy even the youngest of hands.

Handprint butterfly photo card

All that is necessary for this craft is a printed photograph of the child’s face, paper, scissors, glue, and finger paints. The child should dip hands into the paint and make four handprints on paper in some preferred colors. When dry, cut around the perimeter of the handprints. These will serve as the “wings” of the butterfly. Glue the picture of the child’s face in the middle of a piece of paper or card stock. Draw a butterfly body underneath it (or print out a stock image to

use). Draw antennae sticking out of the child’s head and attach the handprints around the head and butterfly body to make the wings.

Heartfelt masterpiece

Children can draw and color all over a large sheet of construction paper or another durable paper. An adult can then use another sheet of paper to make a frame mat of sorts, cutting out a heart shape from the middle. Both pieces of paper are then trimmed to the dimensions of a photo frame. The artwork is placed first and then the heart matting on top so that the artwork will show through the heart shape. Frame everything together for a lasting memento.

Fuzzy flowers

Kids can make Mom a bouquet of flowers that will never wilt. Print a photo of the child’s face and attach it to a piece of circular card stock that is roughly six inches in diameter. Have the child paint a popsicle stick green, and then attach that to the back of the round card stock. The child then glues small fuzzy pom poms to the card stock surrounding the picture to make a flower. If desired, attach a magnet to the back of the flower so it can be secured to the refrigerator. Crafts are a great gift option for young children looking to give something special to Mom on Mother’s Day.

Learn the meanings behind popular Mother’s Day flowers

other’s Day is a time to express love and appreciation for mothers, sentiments that are often expressed with gifts. Flowers are a popular present to bestow on Mother’s Day, as they can brighten a room and bring a sweet aroma to any household. While any flowers may ultimately suffice on Mother’s Day, gift givers may want to select flowers for Mom that convey specific messages. The language of flowers has been recognized for centuries. Though perhaps not as heralded as it once was, flower symbolism persists to this day. Here’s a look at some of the meanings behind certain types of flowers to help guide Mother’s Day gifting.

• Amaryllis: These plants start as bulbs and are naturally spring-blooming flowers. The name comes from the Greek word “amarysso,” which means “to sparkle,” and they symbolize pride.

• Aster: These daisy-like flowers are delicate-looking perennials. Asters make great gifts because they symbolize love and daintiness.

• Begonia: There are more than 2,000 types of begonias, and the flower symbolizes deep thoughts. Begonias were made famous by French horticulturist Michel Bégon, who thought the blooms looked like beautiful girls.

• Bleeding heart: These flowers are red and pink blossoms that look like the perfect heart shape with a teardrop at

the bottom. They’re beautiful and symbolic of love and affection.

• Buttercup: These are associated with youthfulness and cheerfulness and can call to mind childhood days spent picking buttercups and holding them under chins to reveal that you like butter. The flower is known for its beauty and innocent charm.

• Camellia (white): White camellias stand for purity and innocence, but they also symbolize admiration and respect. Camellias make beautiful additions to any bouquet.

• Daisy: Daisies are happylooking flowers, and according to Norse mythology they represent motherhood and children.

• Delphinium: Delphini-

ums come in pink, white and blue varieties and embody youth and renewal. They’re a good pick if you want to convey a continued or renewed affection for a person.

• Tulip: Tulips with an orange hue are thought to represent understanding and appreciation. They can express appreciation for Mom or another special person. Yellow tulips symbolize happiness, while pink tulips are symbolic of love. Red blooms should be reserved for sweethearts.

Various flowers symbolize feelings people want to express to their mothers, grandmothers and other special women on Mother’s Day.

Spice up brunch this Mother’s Day

Children commonly like to give their mothers a break from cooking on Mother’s Day. Youngsters may be eager to help out in the kitchen and whip up something that Mom is certain to enjoy. But many recipes can be complicated for younger children or others who might not be so adept with meal creation. However, with a few ingredients that families may already have on hand, it’s possible to craft a delicious Mother’s Day brunch.

This recipe for “Wee Chicken & Waffles with Maple Syrup” from Denise Gee’s “Southern Appetizers: 60 Delectables for Gracious Get-Togethers” (Chronicle Books) utilizes commercially available miniature waffles and popcorn chicken bites to create a chicken and waffles dish with a kick. Serve alongside mini muffins, deviled eggs, cheese and crackers, and other brunch dishes that are simple for youngsters and their little fingers to prepare.

40 mini waffles from a 10.9-ounce package, lightly toasted

40 pieces cooked fried popcorn chicken

Finely chopped fresh Italian flat-leaf parsley or green onion for garnish (optional)

Hot sauce for serving

To make the syrup: In a large microwave-safe glass measuring cup with pour spout (one holding at least 3 cups) or a bowl, add the maple syrup, pineapple preserves, apple jelly, horseradish, pepper, and salt; whisk

to combine.

Microwave the mixture on high for 35 seconds. (You also can heat it in a small saucepan on low until the mixture is warm.) Stir and taste, adjusting the flavor if desired. Set the syrup aside.

Place the toasted waffles

on a large serving platter. Top each waffle with a piece of chicken. Drizzle the chicken-waffle bites with about 1 teaspoon of the syrup. Garnish with the parsley, if desired, and serve with the remaining syrup and hot sauce.

balloon art, sweet treats, free food, giveaways, raffles, and more. The raffle will include a free Apple Watch and two children’s bikes.

Many community-based organizations will be present to share information and provide free giveaways and education on local resources to help keep children and families healthy this summer and beyond.

Health department staff will be available to provide free blood pressure and diabetes screenings for adults and school required immunizations for students. Insurance, including Medicaid, will be billed, if available, for immunizations. Immunizations will be provided at no cost for uninsured or underinsured students. Health department staff will also be available to complete NC Health Assessment Forms for rising pre-k and kindergarteners, or students new to NC schools for a flat fee of $25. This is a great opportunity to get your child ready for next

school year now before lines are long and appointments are limited. No appointment is necessary during this event.

“This event provides an opportunity for families to get out, get active, and spend quality time together in an affordable way,” says DeShay Oliver, Deputy Health Director for the Cleveland County Health Department. “It also helps connect families with many resources that are available to them in our community that they may not know about otherwise. Last year, we had a great turnout and hope to have an even better one this year. We plan to continue to host this event annually moving forward,” says Oliver.

This event is free and open to everyone. We hope to see you there.
