Tim Moore exonerated in inquiry By Loretta Cozart Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman announced Monday that an inquiry into attorney’s fees paid to N.C. House Speaker Tim Moore by two private clients who had matters before the legislature found no wrongdoing. “Following this review, we have determined that these fees were for legal services paid to Mr. Moore in his capacity as an attorney. This review found no misuse of public office for private gain or other wrongdoing as to these payments and we therefore are closing the inquiry into this matter without further action.” Following the announcement, Moore commented. “I appreciate the careful and professional way the District Attorney and the SBI handled the anonymous allegations that were made against me. I also appreciate the confidence that the voters have placed in me, and I will continue working to maintain their trust.”

Griffin’s Drug Center was a staple of Kings Mountain for 98 years until it closed in 2016. This drug store played a vital role in Kings Mountain’s past, not only as a place to fill prescriptions and purchase everyday health items, it was also a spot for friends to gather after watching a movie or shopping downtown. Students often met there after school for a cherry coke at the soda fountain. In his book, “Tracks Through Time,” Dave Baity shared the story of Griffin Drug Company and E.W. Griffin, Sr., “Griffin bought the Carpenter Drug firm on Mountain Street in 1919. The first location for the store was adjacent to the present site, and organizations such as the Knights of Pythias, Woodmen of the World and the Infinite Order of Redmen met in a large room on the second
floor of the building.” The Woman’s Club also met in Pythian Hall and held their first Fall Festival there. Kings Mountain’s first library, with 85 books, was in what was referred to as the “Pythian Club reading room”. According to the 1919 Sanborn Map, the drug store was located just east of its current location on Mountain Street. Next door was a grocery. This location was confirmed when Baity wrote, “In 1953, Griffin bought the old Patterson Grocery next door and moved there.” E.W. Griffin had owned a pharmacy in Marshville before moving to Kings Mountain. For a time, he worked in a drug store in Gastonia. He earned a degree from the Southern College of Pharmacy when state law began requiring a license. Folks in Kings Mountain called him “Doc Griffin, See GRIFFIN, Page 2A
