Shelby Lions Club hosts their annual Christmas party for visually impaired

Every year for the past 36 years, the blind and visually impaired look forward to attending the Shelby Lions Club Christmas Party. It’s a longstanding tradition that many have been attending for decades. Kina Houser has been attending since the very first time in 1989 when she was just 14 years old and just beginning to lose her vision. She stated, “I enjoy meeting new people and reconnecting with others from previous years. It’s nice to meet others who are experiencing similar issues that come with vision loss and has opened other opportunities like attending Camp Dogwood, a summer camp for the blind and visually impaired.” It was the Shelby Community Lions Club that started the tradition with Dr. Gene Yarboro and his wife Margaret. Alston Bridges Barbecue has been catering BBQ with all the fix-

ins all these years too, which

The group met at Ross Grove Baptist Church on Tuesday, December 2nd.

tendance, many uniting with old friends and others meeting

sphere was festive and bright with each table decorated with red tablecloths and shimmering miniature Christmas trees with chocolate candy and peppermint scattered about. After dinner, the group enjoyed Christmas music and singing carols led by Justin Harper and a spur-of-the-moment volunteer and friend of a VIP (Visually Impaired Person), Joe Brown, played backup on the keyboard. Each VIP received a special Christmas gift filled with candy before heading home.

The Division of Services for the Blind, located at Cleveland County Department of Social Services, sends out the invitations to clients who are receiving services or have received services for vision loss in the past. Family members and caregivers are also served during the annual event. Lucy Plyler, the Social Worker for the Blind, says her phone starts ringing in early November with people asking when the party is planned. Plyler says, “it’s something they look

forward to each year because they see friends they haven’t seen since last year or they meet new friends. It’s a strong connection to find someone else who has vision loss and are experiencing some of the same issues. They can talk to each other about that and feel like they are not alone.”

The primary goal of Lions Club is service to the community. The Shelby Lions Club has a rich history of providing service to Cleveland County residents. With 95 years of history, the club has generously given their time and tal-

ents to improve the lives of so

dents. In addition to hosting the Christmas Party, they can also assist with eye exams and eyeglasses for those who are eligible for assistance. They also sell brooms to raise money to be able to support their service projects. If you are interested in becoming a Lion, send inquiries to: info@ shelbynclions.com.

One more Christmas

How many more Christmases will you have?

Will you have fifty more? Will you have a dozen more? Maybe you will have just one more, maybe. There are no guarantees of a certain number of more Christmases.

My grandpa Hinkle suffered with heart issues. I remember him suffering an episode where his heart was bothering him and he put nitroglycerin pills under his tongue to calm the effects of his heart issues. “I may never see another Christmas” he stated as his pain eased off and he became more relaxed. Seems like he did celebrate a couple more Christmases and before he died at the age of 83. Since we aren’t sure how many more Christmases we will enjoy, let’s make this a good one. Focus your eyes and mind on the person of Christmas – Jesus. The Shepherds came to see him and left rejoicing at what they saw, heard and experienced. Jesus gave them something to talk

about, something to do and their story was compelling. The Wise Men, traveled from a long distance to worship Jesus. They did so because Jesus was worth it. Jesus is worth it. He is worthy of our focus. Our eyes and minds are in so many places today. There is so much to hear and see even if you never leave your house. The television, social media and more are constantly showing us lots of stuff that gets our attention but sometimes makes life fuzzy and mentally chaotic. Focusing our attention on Jesus clears our minds and sharpens our perspectives. Don’t max out. Maxing out is not fun or healthy. This means don’t overspend. Don’t spend money you don’t have. Don’t try to do stuff that pushes you to the brink of exhaustion. What good does this do you or anyone if you go in the hole financially and mentally over the holiday? Step back, be reasonable and use common sense in all that you want to do. Reach out and love others. If this is your last Christmas then you want to let those significant people in

your life know that you love them and care about them. They will remember next Christmas that they were loved by you on the previous Christmas. You may want to do something creative or different for Christmas. Maybe there is someplace special you want to be on Christmas. This is not always possible. Many soldiers will be in distant lands on Christmas. Many relatives will be in distant towns for Christmas. Be where you want to be if you can on Christmas. If you can’t, then try to make as many phone calls as possible to those people.

This Christmas, don’t be sad, mad or bad but be joyful and celebrate this good day. If we are here, then rejoice. If there is an empty chair at the table, remember that to be absent from the body is to be present with God, if we love and accept him. This is our hope that those who are no longer with us are in a better place than we are and someday we will be with them in that beautiful place.

Regardless of how many Christmases you have left, be filled with joy for this one.

The Gaston Symphonic Band will perform 14th annual Christmas Festival

Imagine your favorite Christmas carols played on more than 75 instruments - that’s what you’ll get at the Gaston Symphonic Band’s 14th Annual Christmas Festival on Friday, December 12, at 7 p.m. at Gastonia First Assembly of God.

The concert is free and will feature carols from around the world.

“Of our four annual performances, our Christmas show is by far the largest and most popular,” says Heather Kinlaw, band president.

“We’ve rehearsed extra hours for the perfect pitch on classics from ‘The First Noel’ to modern hits like Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You.’”

In a fresh take on a traditional carol, “Gaston Sleigh Ride” will honor the history and spirit of Gaston County, with lyrics written in part by board member Waynette Roberts. Prepare to sing along, as the audience will receive handouts to chime in during this hometown rendition.

Formed in 1992, the Gaston Symphonic Band is a nonprofit organization with the mission to bring free, high-quality concerts to the community. The group also

provides area students with a platform where they can grow their musical talents.

Musicians range from advancedlevel students to local professionals on flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba and percussion similar to an orchestra, only without the string instruments.

“We strive to bring together talented adult and student musicians in a welcoming environment to celebrate our shared love of music,” Kinlaw says.

It’s A Wonderful Life

(Part One of “Christmas Movies” Series)

Have you ever felt like your life doesn’t matter? That no matter how hard you try, things aren’t turning out the way you planned? In It’s a Wonderful Life, George Bailey experiences this exact struggle. He gave up his own dreams to serve others, yet the pressures of life make him feel hopeless. At his lowest point, he wishes he had never been born. But God’s truth breaks through. An angel shows George how many lives he has touched in ways he never realized. His heavenly Father had noticed his good works all along. Fortunately, God, the righteous judge, sees every choice we make and how it affects those around us. One day he will reward our good works, even the ones we never thought were a big deal. As Hebrews 6:10 (CEV) says, “God is always fair. He will remember how you helped his people in the past and how you are still helping them. You belong to God, and he won’t forget the love you have shown his people.”

A Better Plan

I know a couple who had raised five children. After ten years of enjoying life as empty nesters, they learned a family member could no longer care for her six children. This couple adopted them all. They saved those kids’ through their sacrificial love. Likewise, my husband and I have relocated to four different states even when it was difficult to quit jobs, leave our loved ones, and start over again. However, everywhere we go, people tell us that we’ve been an answer to prayer. Who knew that simply saying yes to God could impact so many lives across the country? Often, we don’t realize the significance of our actions. We are just being ourselves, and God moves through our obedience and kindness. There is nothing wrong with setting goals, but striving to be in his perfect will in order to bring glory to Christ is our highest calling. Apostle Paul declares in Philippians 3:14 (KJV), “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” May we learn, just like George Bailey, that a life shaped by love and service to others becomes the wonderful life God designed for us.

Let’s Pray: “Father, because of your unfailing love, I will worship you all the days of my life. Lord, help me see my life through your eyes. Remind me that my presence matters, and help me to use the gifts, love, and influence you’ve placed in me to impact others for your glory. Most importantly, strengthen me during challenging times so that I will never give up. Teach me to lean into your Word that is eternal and rely on your Spirit who is my Comforter. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Biblebelieving church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

Missy’s journey with us began on June 20, 2020, when she arrived with two of her four-month-old puppies. All three had been chained outside and heartbreakingly, all three had BB pellets in them. One of her pups was injured and rushed to Charlotte for surgery. Thankfully, both puppies found loving homes quickly — but Missy kept getting passed by.

Born in March 2016, Missy is now 9 years old. Her face has turned white with age, but her spirit is still full of joy and love.

About Missy:

• Age: 9 years old.

• Active and playful — loves hikes and adventures.

• Great with other dogs and adores people.

• Affectionate, loyal, and always ready to meet new friends. Deserves a cozy couch and a family to call her own.

• Adoption Requirements & Recommendations:

• Home visit and vet reference required.

• We recommend a family who can give her both activity and affection.

• Secure yard or regular walks would be ideal.

• Adoption Fee: $250.

For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; Titus 3:3-6

Aiming Outdoorsmen

Toward Christ

Jason and I eased up the hill toward the place of our morning hunt. He had come a few days earlier and took a leaf blower to the trail to make sure we had the quietest walk possible. Just over the crest of the hill, only about 400 yards from where we parked, was his hunting house. A house might be an exaggeration. It was only about 4x8 and was in need of a remodel since the year he first built it, but it was still a luxury for any hunter during the cold days of November. As soon as we got situated, we fired up the propane heater. With the shooting windows closed, it didn’t take long for our small enclosure to warm up to a comfortable temperature. We could then open our thermos and pour that extra cup of coffee that we are usually unable to have on mornings like these. Because of the insulated walls, we were also able to hold a regular conversation without the thoughts of being heard by any cruising deer. After a few hours of glassing the field for a shooter buck, Jason decided it was time for breakfast. So, he proceeded to bring out his pre-prepared sausage biscuits along with a sheet of aluminum foil. The foil would be used as our cooking pan to warm the biscuits on the heater. After a few minutes in our make-shift oven, hot biscuits were served. And after that, heated honey buns for that annoying sweet tooth. Now who would not want to hunt this way? The truth is, the older I get the more I look for opportunities just like these. In fact, I make them. I have discovered I really want to hunt more comfortably. And I want to leave all the heavy-liftinghunting to the youngsters. After all, I’ve done my part. While this way of thinking about hunting is fine with me, I fight this method when it comes to serving as a part of my Christian life. I constantly fight the desire to retire from Christian service, let the younger ones do it, and just live less committed to doing my part in the lives of others. It would be very easy to live a secluded Christian life – reading, praying, and even worshipping, and let the younger ones take the places I’ve held for these many years. Let them volunteer. Let them sacrifice. Let them deal with all the drama. I’ve done my part. I don’t need the headaches. I don’t have to put up with it. But when I look at those thoughts, I find them slowing moving from others to me. I find myself wanting what I think I deserve instead of what others need and what I am called to do as a Christian. I find I am tempted to forget I am to love God with all my heart and others as myself. “Lord, help me remember as I age, there is no retirement from serving you. While the areas I serve may change, the need for my service will not. Retirement is not offered in your benefit package. Amen. Oh, and Lord, help to remind other Christians that retirement is not an option for them either. Amen” (We’ll talk about this on Tuesday morning, on Zoom.
