Karl and Debbie Assad prove Santa is more than a red suit By Alan Hodge Most anyone can dress like Santa and Mrs. Claus, but when Karl and Debbie Assad of Blacksburg don that garb they make the true spirit of Christmas shine as bright as the Star of Bethlehem. Just one look at the pair proves they have the appearance of Santa and Mrs. Claus down pat, but it’s the love and caring they bring to their roles that puts them in a higher plane than many others who portray those iconic Christmas characters. The Assads go by the names of “Santa Najib” and “Mama Claus”. Najib is Karl’s middle name and a nod to his Lebanese ancestry. “I go by Mama Claus because that’s what Santa and the elves at the North Pole call me,” Debbie says. You might say that the Covid pandemic of 2020 helped birth Santa Najib and Mama Claus. Karl explained what happened and how he went from a guy with

SANTA From Page 1 These days their appearances range from photo shoots, parades, corporate parties, home visits, nursing home visits, and more. Besides Kings Mountain and Shelby, they travel to Charlotte, Spartanburg, Greenville, and anywhere else withing a 100-mile radius. Besides their spot-on look, the Assads also tell entertaining Yuletide stories of reindeer, elves, and life at their “workshop”. “We try to make the North Pole come alive,” said Debbie. But it was an appearance several years ago at Kings Mountain Life Enrichment Center that moved Santa Najib and MamaClaus into a depth of Yuletide spirit that they continue to pursue. “There was a young lady there who was in a wheelchair and non-verbal,” Karl says. “I knelt in front of her and sang a carol and shared smiles. She held out her hand, took mine, and kissed it. Everyone in the room
began crying because she had never done that before.” It was then that they realized what a positive impact they could have. “It’s a ministry for us,” both Karl and Debbie say. Karl elaborated. "There are so many kids that are hurting,” he said. “They don’t just ask for toys; they ask for things like bullying to stop and for families to come together. Remember, these are kids just five and six years old.” Karl and Debbie keep a log of requests like these in what they call “Santa’s Prayer Book”. In many ways, you might say that the Assads combine the secular and the spiritual in their Christmas message of love and peace. “So many times Santa is looked at in a commercial sense,” Debbie said. “But Christmas is a time Santa can also have the light of Christ in his smile or hug or word of encouragement.” For more information on the Assads and their amazing work spreading the Christmas spirit, visit their facebook page Santa Najib and MamaClaus.

Grant Supports First Responders Recently, representatives from the AgSouth Farm Credit office in Shelby presented a $5,000 check to Cleveland Community College’s EMS program. “We are grateful to great community partners like Ag South, who provide support to our Public Safety programs,” said Tony Fogleman, vice president of workforce development. “Their partnership ensures that our local communities have trained professionals that meet the needs of our citizens. Ag South continues to support our excellent education programs at Cleveland Community College.” The grant will support training efforts in the Emergency Medical Services program and allow Nichole Hudson, EMS program coordinator, to purchase upgraded equipment that she says will better prepare students for work in the field. “This investment directly strengthens workforce readiness and patient outcomes in our rural communities.” The high-fidelity simulator is used to replicate real-life medical conditions, including changes in heart rhythm, breathing patterns, vital signs, airway complications, and patient responses to treatments. Instructors can program scenarios such as trauma, cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, and pediatric emergencies, allowing students to practice clinical decision-making in a controlled, realistic environment. “For an EMS program in a rural county like ours, where the potential to run a call in an agricultural setting is high, equipment that places the student in a mock scenario is invaluable,” said Hudson. “The simulator allows students to encounter rare but critical situations in the classroom, then they are more prepared for similar situations once operating in the field.” Simulators also provide immediate feedback on interventions, support teamwork and communication training, and ensure graduates are better prepared to manage real patients in the field. Christmas Breakfast Casseroles SAUSAGE BREAKFAST CASSEROLE 1 lb. ground pork sausage 1 tsp. mustard powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 eggs, beaten 2 cups milk 6 slices white bread, toasted and cut into cubes 8 oz. mild Cheddar cheese, shredded • Crumble sausage into a medium skillet. Cook over medium heat until evenly brown; drain. • In a medium bowl, mix together mustard powder, salt, eggs and milk. Add the sausage, bread cubes, and cheese, and stir to
coat evenly. Pour into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Cover, and chill in the refrigerator for 8 hours, or overnight. • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. • Cover, and bake 45 to 60 minutes. Uncover, and reduce temperature to 325 degrees F. Bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until set. EASY BREAKFAST CASSEROLE 1 lb. Sausage 6 eggs 2 cups milk 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1/2 15 oz. package frozen hashbrowns 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
• Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. • Crumble sausage into a skillet on the stove and brown completely. Remove from heat • In a large bowl, mix eggs and milk together and whisk well. Add salt and pepper to this mixture and stir. • To a 9×13 dish, add frozen hashbrowns, sausage, and cheese – stir together in the dish • Pour the egg/milk mixture into the dish. • Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes – covered with foil. Remove the foil and bake for about 10-15 minutes more until the dish is bubbly and cheese is melted.

By Gary Miller Jason and I eased up the hill toward the place of our morning hunt. He had come a few days earlier and took a leaf blower to the trail to make sure we had the quietest walk possible. Just over the crest of the hill, only about 400 yards from where we parked, was his hunting house. A house might be an exaggeration. It was only about 4x8 and was in need of a remodel since the year he first built it, but it was still GARY MILLER a luxury for any hunter during the cold days of November. As soon as we got situated, we fired up the propane heater. With the shooting windows closed, it didn’t take long for our small enclosure to warm up to a comfortable temperature. We could then open our thermos and pour that extra cup of coffee that we are usually unable to have on mornings like these. Because of the insulated walls, we were also able to hold a regular conversation without the thoughts of being heard by any cruising deer. After a few hours of glassing the field for a shooter buck, Jason decided it was time for breakfast. So, he proceeded to bring out his pre-prepared sausage biscuits along with a sheet of aluminum foil. The foil would be used as our cooking pan to warm the biscuits on the heater. After a few minutes in our make-shift oven, hot biscuits were served. And after that, heated honey buns for that annoying sweet tooth. Now who would not want to hunt this way? The truth is, the older I get the more I look for opportunities just like these. In fact, I make them. I have discovered I really want to hunt more comfortably. And I want to leave all the heavy-liftinghunting to the youngsters. After all, I’ve done my part. While this way of thinking about hunting is fine with me, I fight this method when it comes to serving as a part of my Christian life. I constantly fight the desire to retire from Christian service, let the younger ones do it, and just live less committed to doing my part in the lives of others. It would be very easy to live a secluded Christian life – reading, praying, and even worshipping, and let the younger ones take the places I’ve held for these many years. Let them volunteer. Let them sacrifice. Let them deal with all the drama. I’ve done my part. I don’t need the headaches. I don’t have to put up with it. But when I look at those thoughts, I find them slowing moving from others to me. I find myself wanting what I think I deserve instead of what others need and what I am called to do as a Christian. I find I am tempted to forget I am to love God with all my heart and others as myself. “Lord, help me remember as I age, there is no retirement from serving you. While the areas I serve may change, the need for my service will not. Retirement is not offered in your benefit package. Amen.
