Stuart Cramer High honors Katherine Cramer Angell By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
Not every high school grad plans a career centered around computers, science or math. Some are interested in things like welding, auto repair, graphic design, or baking cakes. Baking cakes? That's right. Recognizing that fact, Gaston County Schools, and Stuart Cramer High in particular, have strong vocational skills programs and the Culinary Arts Department is one of the strongest. Last Wednesday, a group of dignitaries, school officials, and others gathered at Stuart Cramer High to dedicate the Culinary Arts classroom and program to the late Katherine Cramer Angell. “We are honored to have everyone here for this great occasion,” Stuart Cramer principal Audrey Devine said. Angell was the daughter of Stuart W. Cramer and co-founder of the Culinary Institute of America. She was born in 1890 and died in 1983. She also served on the New Haven Human Relations Council and Vocational Counseling Service, the Governor's Commission on Child Welfare, the Connecticut Citizens for Public Schools and the board of the Metropolitan Opera Guild. She attended Queens College in Charlotte and the Finch School in New York City. She was married to Dr. James Rowland Angell,
president of Yale University, after the death of her first husband, Paul Woodman. Dr. Angell died in 1949. The Culinary Institute of America is an American private college and culinary school specializing in culinary, baking, and pastry arts education. The school's primary campus is located in Hyde Park, New York, with branch campuses in St. Helena and Napa, California, San Antonio, Texas, and the Republic of Singapore. The college, which was the first to teach culinary arts in the United States, offers associate and bachelor's degrees, and has the largest staff of American Culinary Federation Certified Master Chefs. The CIA also offers continuing education for professionals in the hospitality industry as well as conferences and consulting services. In addition to professional education, the college also offers recreational classes for non-professionals. The college operates student-run restaurants on their four U.S. campuses. The school colors (green and gold) refer to the school's mission to sustain the environment and to strive for excellence. The school was founded as a vocational institute for returning veterans of World War II. With a growing student body, the school purchased a former Jesuit novitiate in Hyde Park in 1970, which remains its central campus. The school began awarding associate degrees in 1971 and bachelor's degrees in 1993. Among the guests at the Stuart Cramer High dedication was Angell's great grandson Damon Vickers and his daughter Anya. See CULINARY ARTS page 4

Purple Heart recipients get special parking spaces By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
Veterans who have received the Purple Heart medal for wounds received in combat now have “reserved parking” at McDonald’s restaurants in our area. Jeff Stanton of Stanton Enterprises who owns five McDonald’s restaurants, has worked with Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 634 members to place a sign in each of the parking lots as a space for wounded veterans. “We are very happy to partner with and support the Wounded Warriors,” Stanton said. “Placing a sign to designate parking for them is the least we can do with all of the sacrifices they have made to protect our country.” Currently, the Belmont and Mt. Holly McDonald’s locations have the signs. Eventually the other Members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and Belmont McDonald's employees are three McDonald’s that Stanton seen with the new reserved parking sign.
