Gaston County Schools “Nickels 4 Neighbors” campaign Edited by Alan Hodge Gaston County Schools is coordinating a district-wide effort to support schools in eastern North Carolina affected by Hurricane Florence. A fundraising campaign called “Nickels 4 Neighbors” was conducted on Wednesday, November 28 at all schools in the district. The central office departments also participated. Students, employees, parents, and others were asked to make a contribution of any monetary denomination on Wednesday, November 28. The goal was to have each school to collect $200.00 – the equivalent of 4,000 nickels. As of late last week, the total collected had reached $17,716.55, which is the equivalent of 354,331 nick-

els! Students at Belmont Central Elementary were among those who pitched in. Ms. Anita Delaney’s second graders were happy to pitch their coins in the jar. “By mid-morning we had collected over fifty dollars,” Delaney said. “It was a great opportunity for them to see how the hurricane effected schools in eastern North Carolina and how something as simple as bringing nickles to donate could help other children.” Second grade student Emerson Steiner agreed with his teacher. “It’s good to help other people,” he said. Steiner’s classmate Kennedy Dribble also understood the contribution concept. See NICKLES, Page 4

Cramerton’s got a handle on growth and development By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

Like all the communities in eastern Gaston County, the Town of Cramerton is facing unprecedented growth and development. A perfect example of that is the large-scale residential and commercial development proposed by MT Land along S. New Hope Rd. just below Armstrong Ford Rd. on Cramerton’s southern flank. Plans by MT Land call for as many as 1,500 residential units and other development on nearly 500 acres of property owned by Crescent Resources. About 189 acres of the land is in Cramerton’s Extra Territorial Jurisdiction

and 292 acres are in Gaston County. Over 300 houses could be built in the ETJ as long as the developer meets Cramerton zoning rules. That’s called “use by right”. However, Cramerton officials are fighting the portion of the proposed development outside the ETJ. To that end the town commissioners passed a resolution on Nov. 1 and revisited it on Dec. 3 expressing support for commercial development on the S. New Hope corridor and opposing the MT Land county rezoning petition CD18-01 “due to it being primarily high density residential development”. See CRAMERTON, Page 4

Belmont police offer drinkers a driving choice By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

It looks like a Belmont PD patrol car. It looks like a taxi. It’s a clever reminder to not drink and drive. Actually, the special cruiser that the Belmont police department has recently created is a little bit of all three. The car started life as a well seasoned 2006 Crown Victoria patrol car with about 100,000 miles on the odometer, but thanks to some skillful work by Franklin Sign and Graphics in Lowell, its been transformed into a colorful, rolling reminded that if you drink alcohol and plan on getting somewhere, then you need to call a cab or you could end up riding in a police car to another destination- the jail house. According to Belmont PD fleet manager Tyler Graham, the cost to completely wrap the Crown Vic with police and taxi colors was paid for

The Belmont police have transformed one of their cars into a rolling reminder about drinking and driving. Photo by Alan Hodge with money from the auction sale of four other older cop cars. The car made its debut during the Belmont Christmas parade where it turned plenty of heads. “The wrap is not just for looks,” said Graham. “It’s

still a fully functional police car.” The car will be parked at various locations around town, shown at special events, and used at DWI checkpoints. “The vehicle was transformed into a visual aid of

sorts to help educate our community,” said Belmont PD Lt. Jason Davis. “The vehicle is an example of the two choices to be made by anyone who is deciding whether to drive after having drank See CHOICE, Page 4
