Refurbished water tank to mark Belmont River District By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
Folks driving through East Belmont on Catawba St. have probably noticed some interesting activity involving the water tank at Catawba River Antique Mall. For the past couple of weeks, workers from Hickory-based Custom Coatings have been sandblasting, painting, and structurally beefing up the once rusty tank in preparation for an exciting logo that will grace its side. The image will depict folks paddling canoes on the Catawba River with the words “River District” in large letters. Credit for having the tank painted, and picking up the $100,000 tab, goes to D.J. Toal who owns the former Majestic Mill building that's now home to the antique mall, and the tank. He also owns Bisque Imports in North Belmont and Slumpy's glass mold company that's located just a bit further down Catawba St. from the tank and mall. What prompted Toal to tackle the tank project? “It is an historical landmark,” he said. “There are a lot of folks who connect with it and love it. I do too. It is a link to Belmont's past.” According to Belmont's city manager, Adrian Miller, Toal has made a great contribution to the community. See WATER TANK page 3

Light rail idea a rerun in our area
By Alan Hodge
alan.bannernews@gmail.com
A couple of weeks ago, August 21, a crowd of about 200 people gathered at Gaston College in Belmont to hear ideas for bringing light rail service to our area. The proposal would extend the current Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) LYNX light rail system across the Catawba River into Belmont and maybe to Gastonia. Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) Senior Transportation Planner Jason Lawrence made the presentation, noting that the Gaston County meeting had drawn a bigger audience than any of the previous meetings in Charlotte. Lawrence emphasized that Belmont’s newly hired downtown director Phil Boggan is getting himself acclimated to the city and eager to meet local citizens. consideration of the West CorPhoto by Alan Hodge ridor line is in its early plan-
ning phase, and the purpose of the meetings are to gather public comment before completing the initial planning, design, funding and other considerations. He noted that since funding has been secured to replace the Wilkinson Boulevard bridge in the next few years, makes this the ideal time to develop future light rail plans that can be incorporated into the bridge design. Many questions and comments from the audience demonstrated a high level of support for the service, tempered by an understanding it will be years before a light rail system can be built to the airport and across the See LIGHT RAIL page 4
Phil Boggan hired as new downtown Belmont director By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
The City of Belmont has hired Phil Boggan as its new downtown director. Boggan replaces Vicky Davis who resigned a couple of months ago. Boggan took his post about two weeks ago. “We are pleased and excited to have Phil on our team,” said Belmont’s plan-
ning director Shelley DeHart. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that is sure to continue the upward development of our local main street program.” A native of Elba, Alabama, Boggan lived and worked in Louisiana before moving to his current home in Charlotte five months ago. Boggan explained how he found North Carolina and Belmont.
“I recently moved to Charlotte from Louisiana for a quality of life change,” Boggan says. “Over the last five years I fell in love with the natural beauty of North Carolina. My family and I have vacationed at the beaches in Ocracoke and Duck, as well as, the mountains near Asheville and Blowing Rock. I was at a point in my career that after sixteen years of working for the State of Loui-
siana’s Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism / Office of Cultural Development, I was ready to explore other adventures and cultures, predominantly in North Carolina.” Boggan said he became aware of Belmont after visiting some of our local restaurants and attending events such as Garibaldifest.
