Holy Angels hosts Journey Of Hope By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

The Journey of Hope bike team made its traditional visit to residents of Holy Angels last Friday. This year marks the 28th time the group has stopped by Belmont during their annual 3,000-mile rides across America. The Journey of Hope riders are part of The Ability Experience. This group of over 20 cyclists and crew members is one of three Journey of Hope teams that is dedicating its summer to enhancing the lives of thousands of people with disabilities through grant funding and community engagement. Along the route, the team partners with local organizations that support people with disabilities by coming together at Friendship Visits – a time when the team can interact with the people they are riding in support of while giving them an experience unlike any other. The Journey of Hope team consists of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity men from across the country. Members of the team come from colleges and universities around the country including Texas Christian University, University of Dayton, University of Colorado-Boulder, University of California-Berkeley, Florida State University, and UNC-Chapel Hill. The team cycles an average of 75 miles per day ending at the Nation’s Capital on Saturday, August 11. Part of each day is spent with people with disabilities on the 64-day Journey of Hope. Every cyclist commits to raising a minimum of $5,500 on behalf of people with disabilities in hopes to enhance their quality of life. See HOLY ANGELS page 10

Belmont PD bike patrol provides vital service By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

The Belmont Police Department has many law enforcement and community policing tools at its disposal, but one category of its equipment- bicycles- has become rather worn due to age and use. The Belmont PD bike patrol is a vital and practical means of getting riding officers out and about in a very visible way. “Bikes are a good way to reach out and interact with the community,” says Belmont PD Sgt. Allen Buchanon. “It makes the officers more approachable. They are a great tool.” Belmont PD uses its two Belmont Police Dept. officers Doug Huffstetler left and Sgt. bikes for a variety of pur- Allen Buchanon are seen with one of the department’s wellposes. Belmont making good use new rescue boat By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

A couple of summers ago the Belmont Fire Dept. took possession of an inflatable water rescue and patrol boat and it has proven to be a great addition to the service. The vessel is a center console Zodiac. It's

17 feet long, has a 90 horsepower engine, and can travel 40 miles per hour. Cost of the craft was $34k. No sooner did it arrive than Belmont firefighters took turns learning how to quickly launch and operate the boat and familiarize See FD BOAT page 2
