Keeping the river safe By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

It's no secret that booming development on both shores of the Catawba River has also increased the number of people who turn to its waters for recreation and the Gaston County Police Marine Enforcement Unit is on the job to make sure everyone who does so is safe. The unit got started back in 2002. It currently has five members- four officers led by Sgt. Eric Knupp. “The county saw a need for safety on the river and its lakes,” Knupp said. The unit patrols from Mt. Island Dam near Mt. Holly to near the S.C. state line and Buster Boyd Bridge. They stay especially busy during the summer. “We are on duty in twelve hour shifts from the time school lets out to Labor Day,” said Knupp. The unit is on call year round. The unit currently has two boats. One is a 22-foot, center console McKee Craft with a Yamaha 225 engine. The other craft is a Workskiff brand 27-footer with twin 250 Yamaha motors. “We got the skiff three years ago,” said Knupp. The skiff is similar to a type of boat used by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coastguard. It's made mostly of heavy duty aluminum with an inflatable “collar” around the hull. It has an enclosed cabin and can hit speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.
