Belmont Fire Dept. urges water safety on the river By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Two recent drownings, one on the Catawba River near US74 and the other on the South Fork near Spencer Mtn., lends urgency to the need for people to add a healthy dose of safety to their aquatic fun. In case that fails to happen, and an incident should take place, the Belmont Fire Department is ready to pitch in and help with one of their most important pieces of apparatus. The Navy has them. The Coast Guard has them. Other law enforcement agencies have them, and the Belmont Fire Department has one. What is it? A center console Zodiac rescue boat. The

boat is 17 feet long, has a 90 horsepower engine, and can travel 40 miles per hour. Last week saw a group of fire department personnel gather at Riverside Marina on the Catawba River for a training session with the Zodiac. Firefighters took turns learning how to quickly launch and operate the boat and familiarize themselves with that stretch of the river. During summer, the boat is taken out about once a week for a run and training. One of the drills last week involved speeding upstream to Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park about a mile away. The Zodiac covered the distance in just a couple of minutes. The boat’s beat ranges from just north of the I-85 bridge south to the Seven Oaks

area. Getting the boat from the fire station on Keener Blvd., where it is housed, to the Riverside Marina only takes about 10 minutes. That, plus just a few more minutes to launch it, makes the craft a true quick deployment apparatus. The Zodiac is fully equipped with an emergency communications radio, lights, siren, depth finder, and sonar. There are also extra life jackets on board as well as a back board. The Zodiac is nice, but it’s the Belmont firefighters who operate it that make it a viable and valuable tool. “Since we got the boat it’s been used on twenty one missions,” said Belmont FD public information officer See SAFETY, Page 7
