Belmont’s Band of Brothers

By Alan Hodge

Editor's note: Over 20 years ago I worked in the Belmont branch of the Gaston County Public Library. Nearly every week, Barbara Kasmer and sometimes her husband Paul would bring in their three young sons, Dillon, Tom, and Leo. Time passed, and all three brothers grew up and became outstanding officers in our nation's military. Here's their story- in their own words- and it serves as a testimonial to the fact that America's small towns are the heart and spirit of our nation. DILLON Dillon, 30, has a BS Ocean Engineering from US Naval Academy. He was in the top 2% of his graduating class at the Naval Academy. Currently an MBA Candidate, Class of 2019 Harvard Business School. Dillon served eight years in the US Marines. He graduated the Naval Academy in 2009 as a second lieutenant and finished his time last summer as a captain. He was a lieutenant through both of his Afghanistan deployments and a captain for my brief staff time and as an instructor. “I spent my time in the Marines as an infantry officer,” Dillon said. “Think of that as the function or profession. Over the course of eight years I held a variety of different job titles at two different units. First unit: 3d Battalion, 8th Marines, based in Camp Lejeune, NC. One year as a rifle platoon commander, where I led a 50100-man (depending on the day) infantry platoon during a deployment that started on a Navy ship and ended with (not according to plan) four months at my own small outpost in See BROTHERS page 5

Stowe Park upgrades unveiled City of Belmont officials and other dignitaries gathered recently to officially unveil a plethora of improvements to Stowe Park.

Mt. Holly Sports Hall of Fame names Inductees for 2018

Upgrades include new playground equipment, replacement of the old playground border with new poly border and rubber mulch. French drains and other drainage improvements were added around the new playground area to help prevent any standing water after rain showers. The old gazebo was torn down for multiple reasons, but most importantly because of a safety concern due to rotting wood. It was replaced with a concrete pad that will be used for Belmont Parks and Rec. events such as Movies in the Park, Wednesday Night Acoustic Band Concerts, the fall concert series in the park, and much more. Drainage improvements were also made to this site to prevent any standing water and drainage into other sections of the park. The Parks and Rec. Citizens Advisory Board will be evaluating different options to enhance this site in the future. The fountain received much needed renovations. It was sand blasted and repainted, and new LED lights were installed, but the biggest improvement was the replacement of the fountain head. The fountain spray now reaches higher than it has in over 25 years. Representative Dana Bumgardner was instrumental in Belmont mayor Charles Martin (lime green sport coat) and other official are these improvements. He secured $75,000 in State funding seen at the recent ribbon cutting for Stowe Park inprovements. for the project. These renovations would not have been City of Belmont photo possible without this funding.
