How Apple Orchard Farm is coping with these difficult days By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
It’s no secret that small businesses of all types have been dealing with a variety of challenges during recent weeks and that includes farms large and small. Art Duckworth has been operating his Apple Orchard Farm at 640 Mariposa Rd. near Stanley since 1972. He owns 13 acres and has 65 acres acres of family land available. Duckworth is a seasoned and scientific
farmer who raises black Angus cattle, Tamworth Berkshire hogs, and keeps bees. He sells the beef, pork, and honey from his home. Duckworth’s farming credentials are many. A few include being a NC Certified meat handler and NC Certified beekeper. He won Farmer of the Year for Gaston County 2012 and was one of the top five finalist for that designation at the state level. He also served on the Farm Bureau for 20 years. The current COVID19 sit-
uation has changed the way Duckworth does business with his customers. His operation is a NC Certified farm with voluntary biosecurity protocols. “I used to let my regular customers come in the house and select their meat or honey,” he said. “Now, they call me in advance and I meet them in the driveway. They tell me what they want and I go inside, get it, bring it out to their car, and away they go. I am taking every See FARM, Page 4

Chappy Pitts is a prince of pen makers Plans for new Belmont Parks and Rec. Center moving forward
By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
It has been said that the pen is mightier than the sword, and in the case of the custom made pens by Kevin “Chappy” Pitts of the Iron Station community near Stanley, they are beautiful as well. Pitts creates pens and other items primarily as a hobby. His “shop” is a converted, open air, former popup camper in his front yard. During inclement weather, he has tarp sides he can attach to enclose the arrangement. The equipment he uses to make his pens and other handcrafted things is an eclectic blend of hand me down and economically procured lathes, saws, and grinders. The wood that Pitts uses to make his pens comes from a variety of sources. Some comes from whiskey barrels with the aroma still wafting out of the wood. Brands include Jameson, Captain Morgan, Old Granddad, and

contributor and big Chicago Cubs fan Bill Ward thinks the best one is a pen made from authentic Wrigley field seat wood. After fashioning the outer part of the pen on a lathe,
Pitts finishes the product, depending on the barrel style, with the appropriate pen kit. On some pens he laser etches designs and logos. See PITTS, Page 3
Back in 1951, AfricanAmerican poet Langston Hughes wrote a work entitled A Dream Deferred. Even though the theme wasn’t about a new Parks and Rec. Center for Belmont, the basic idea of waiting a long time for something good to happen fits because the city has been in dire need of one for many years. But that wait is in the planning stages of ending. Belmont Parks and Rec. director Zip Stowe talked about the progress being made on getting a new, 40,000sq.ft. center built on the sloping ground on E. Catawba St. between the new municipal center building and Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park. “We are entering the design phase of the new recre-
ation center,” Stowe said. “A new center was number one on our list of Parks and Recreation Master Plan projects.” Currently, Belmont uses the J. Paul Ford Recreation Center on E. Woodrow Ave. as its headquarters. This decades old structure only has room for a few offices and a linoleum-floored space in the center for things such as dance lessons and meetings. “For our recreation programs we have been using larger spaces in churches and schools,” Stowe said. “The current center is very limited.” Stowe has been doing some scouting to see what other municipalities have in the way of facilities. He’s roamed over North and South Carolina, and closer to home in Stanley, Mt. Holly, Cramerton, Gastonia, and Dallas. See REC. CENTER, Page 2

Gaston County Government continues work behind the scenes to prepare for a resumption of inperson services. The government has continued to function at a high level throughout the Stay at Home order, utilizing teleworking whenever possible to allow its employees to continue to serve its citizens while not exposing themselves to higher risk for COVID-19 while working from an office. At the direction of county manager Dr. Kim Eagle, the County’s Continuity of Operations Team is finalizing the plans for a gradual resumption of in person services. One of the tasks that must first be accomplished is making sure the right protective equipment is in place before employees can return to work. In coordination with Emergency Management Director Kevin Gordon, the county ordered hands-free temperature scanners at the entrances for several county facilities.
Hand heldtemperature scanners will also be utilized in areas that have less staff and public traffic. The decision to purchase the large scanners was a strategic decision – preparing the county if a second spike of COVID-19 hits further down the road, or if a new illness crops up that would warrant for widespread temperature checks to protect the health and safety of staff and Gaston County residents. The county has also used the teleworking time to allow for construction of new office space on the second and third floors of the county’s administration building. “Our staff has done an incredible job of serving our citizens throughout this crisis,” Eagle said. “As we build our plans for gradually bringing staff back into buildings and resuming in-person services, we want to make sure we do so in a way that keeps everyone safe.”

PITTS From Page 1 Pitts got involved in pen making after seeing examples online and making the acquaintance of folks with a similar interest. Besides pens, Pitts also makes down home style

“I like playing around with the colors,” he says. He also assembles coffee mill kits with his own special touches. Pitts is a person in perpetual motion and his pens and other products prove it. “I like to tinker with things,” he says. “I enjoy making things.” Pitts is proud to offer his

FARM From Page 1 precaution. His reputation as a producer of top quality meat and honey means he has a broad customer base. “My customers call me constantly wanting meat, he says. The demand for meat is huge these days and sometimes grocery shelves are bare. Drawing on his experience as a farmer and former adjunct professor of economics at Gardner-Webb University, Duckworth explained how COVID19 is impacting the meat market. “First, contrary to what the news says, there is not a shortage of meat, he said. “The shortage of meat in stores is because of panic buying and the fact that suppliers can’t keep up with demand. Duckworth has his beef and pork processed by Mays Meats in Taylorsville. “Right now they are

Thankful for Mom! Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org pastortrent@salvationchurchnc.org
This past Sunday we celebrated Mother’s Day together. What an awesome day, a day dedicated to honoring our mothers! Mothers are one of God’s greatest gifts to us. Our mothers reflect many of the great attributes of God, such as love, compassion, and grace. Each of us are so blessed to have mothers. We celebrate our mothers, and remember our mothers who have passed, and the great legacies they have left us. I am very grateful for my mother, and my wife, who is a wonderful mother to our four children. Many times, as we think of our mothers, we think of their godly characteristics. As children, adult children, what do we see in our mothers? When we look at the relationship between mother and child, the greatest place to look is Jesus and His relationship with His mother, Mary. As Jesus hung upon the cross, dying for you and me, He saw his mother kneeling at the foot of the cross, watching her precious Son die. Jesus also saw John there, the disciple he loved so much. Jesus looked at them and said, “Woman, behold your son!” The He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” (John 19:26-27, NKJV). In this instance, Jesus knowing He would soon die, rise again, and ascend to the Father, placed
His mother in the care of John. John cared for her the remainder of her life. This caring act by Jesus on the cross, illustrates the way Jesus Rev. Trent Tankin viewed His mother. Jesus loved His mother deeply. Throughout Jesus’ ministry on earth, Mary was there. From the manger to the cross, Mary remained by her Son. Jesus respected His mother, honored her, and cared for her. Jesus’ very ministry reflected the faith of His mother. Just as she willingly submitted to the will of the Father, giving birth to Jesus, Jesus also submitted to the will of the Father, giving His life for all people on the cross. We love our mothers. They mean so much to us. Even as adults, we honor our mothers, listen to them, and respect them. They have given so much for us, and we owe them our best. No one will love us like our mothers, just as Jesus’ mother loved Him. May we show them the same love and compassion. Today, may each of us who are blessed to have our mothers in our lives, take a moment to reach out to them and let them know just what they mean to us. Let them know today that they are loved. Mothers reflect God’s love. May we reflect that same love to someone today. May we live the faith of our mothers before all people. To all of our moms today, we say thank you!

City of Belmont begins phased reopening of parks On Tuesday, May 5, 2020 the City of Belmont modified the Declaration of Local State of Emergency that was issued in March 2020. The City of Belmont has begun a phased reopening of all city parks. As of Tuesday, May 5, 2020 the Davis Park tennis courts and the Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park boat landing are now open for public use. On Friday, May 8 all walking areas, picnic shelters, baseball fields, soccer fields, and basketball courts will be opened for public use. All individuals who wish to use the City of Belmont park ameni-
ties listed below are expected to adhere to the CDC guidelines regarding social distancing and cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting of surfaces. All city park playgrounds and restrooms will remain closed until further notice. We will continue monitoring the status of the COVID-19 pandemic and will open these amenities when it is safe to do so. We are preparing internally to be able to take the necessary cleaning precautions for these amenities when they do reopen. Over the past two months our staff members have been
utilizing this time to complete outstanding projects in our parks. Construction is still taking place in Stowe Park which we are hopeful will be completed by the end of May. New playground equipment is on order for Stowe Park and Davis Park that will replace the two dated play units. We will also be installing an inclusive orbit spinner at Stowe Park that will be accessible for children in wheelchairs. We have been working hard to enhance our parks to welcome our residents and visitors back when they reopen.

first time he let me drive the truck with his trailer on the back of it, he asked if I knew how to drive with a trailer. The only way I knew to respond Shelton Fisher was to smile and tell him, “I’m about to learn!”, as he began to shake his head as if he had made a mistake. He entrusted me with a spare key however and on that first day, I learned a lot about the do’s and don’ts of driving with a little extra in the back. When I first began driving many years ago, my father taught me two things that have always stuck out like fenceposts in my mind: 1) When in reverse, you cut the wheel in the direction you want the back of your vehicle to turn. 2) He always, and I repeat ALWAYS made me use my mirrors to back up. His truck was a monster, and when we would go to doctor’s appointments in Charlotte, he would tell me that my back window would not always be accessible, and my mirrors were my friends. To this day, I do not own vehicles without blind-spot mirrors. I found out quickly that when driving with a trailer, these two rules of thumb tend to declare a thumb war. I am constantly learning how to cut my wheel opposite of the direction I need to back into in order to position my trailer in the right spot, then proceed to back into whichever lane those kindly folks running the Waste Center tell me to. The problem is that by the time I have it all sorted out and finally parked, there is a line wrapped around the fence and headed towards the railroad tracks. With an embarrassed look and a face as red as a pickled beet, I begin unloading the bed and trailer once I’m out of the way of the (im)patient people who have waited for me to get situated in the right spot. So, to all my dear friends, neighbors, and readers alike, it is with a humble heart that I beg your forgiveness the next time that you haul your trash off. You may see me in my tank top and brown “Mount Holly” hat just struggling away, but just know that it is not without lack of trying! Thank you for your patience!

Create memories with dignity & respect
I feel a certain need to come out and apologize to you all. You, dear readers grab this paper each week and hopefully find interest in my columns when they are available, and I have let you down… You may be questioning my disdain, but this has been on my mind for several weeks now and I must get it off my chest. To all my dear friends and neighbors, I would like to apologize with my heart of hearts for taking so long at the Riverbend Recycling and Waste Center. While I can drive trucks, forklifts, lawn equipment, and just about anything on wheels, I am a novice when it comes to driving with a trailer! Growing up in Riverbend came with a few unique chores. While a lot of families who lived within the city limits got their trash picked up, we had to keep ours tucked away until it was enough to load up the bed of Dad’s truck. When the time was right (about every week or so), we would get our Garb Card ready and tightly load up the back. Several miles later, tucked away just behind the National Gypsum plant, was a fenced off area with several metal bins for people to chuck their disposables away. My father would pull up to the tiny shack where the groundskeepers reside and yell, “Whaddya say there Captain?” Typically, there would be a smile from the friendly old man keeping watch and he would reply, “Not much, just hangin’ in. Whatcha got today?” Back then, to haul away a truckload it only required two hole-punches on a four-punch card but now it costs a whole card unless you have recyclables. Fast-forward about twenty years and here I am, back in Riverbend with my wife’s grandfather’s truck and trailer. We have been in the process of renovating the bathroom and updating my grandmother’s old house while living in it, so you can imagine the kinds of things I have hauled off. I currently do not own a truck but have ordered a hitch for the back of my Ford Escape and plan on buying a small trailer to perform my weekly trash hauls. Until then, my wife and I have been borrowing her grandfather’s truck when the time comes to spend another Garb Card. The

Gardening is hard By Allison Bansen During this quarantine I don’t know of one person that hasn’t decided to work in their yard or start their own garden. I have never been much of a gardener, mainly because I didn’t have the time needed to put into a garden. So, I decided to pick some of the easy growing vegetables. Tomatoes, watermelon, peppers, strawberries and some dahlias for color. We built a eight-foot fence to keep the deer out and I was ready to go. Two weeks in and I had officially won against the deer, but something was still getting to my strawberries and peppers. I came to realize it was birds and the only way to protect my vegetables from them was to put a top on my fence, which I am not doing. Long story short, gardening is hard! There are so many variables with weather, too little rain, too much rain, pests, deer, and birds. Then there are fungi that can invade the plant. It can get really complicated and time consuming. I decided after about three weeks that I will leave my vegetable production up to the fine people at the Farmers Market. I did plant an acre of Sunflowers and Zin-
nias to do a trial run of growing flowers. There is something about a flower that is perfection and symbolizes hope. I am envious of the way they live wild Allison Bansen and free. They stand tall and express their beauty with such bold confidence. I sure hope my flowers exude confidence. It is profound how flowers have a way of making things better, even during a lockdown. In fact, there have been many studies that show that flowers have an immediate impact on mood. Flowers have also been shown to lower anxiety and anger. So guys, take note flowers are beneficial after an argument. This is the year of the flowers for me. One acre plowed and seeded by hand. If all goes well I will get a seeder next year to help. One of my favorite quotes “where flowers bloom, so does hope.” This year especially brings hope for me and our community. Hope that we will someday live a new normal and still be social and hope that we all stay safe and grow tall together as a community. #Belmontstrong

Jesus Vina Moreno is a Gaston College SPARC Scholar Jesus Vina Moreno is a highly accomplished participant in the College’s SPARC program, which gives students the opportunity for intensive hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, instruction and laboratory experiences. He will graduate from Gaston College in May 2020 with a 4.0 GPA, an Associate in Science degree and a Diploma in Biotechnology. Achievements in his personal life make his SPARC success even more remarkable. Since he was a child in the Dominican Republic, Moreno wanted to be a physician. He was inspired by his mother, who is a doctor, and by the medical care and attention that saved his life after he was infected with the dengue virus at the age of 12. The virus put him in coma for several days. “When I woke up,” he said, “I had tubes in my mouth, hands, and feet, and even opening my eyes was a challenge. All I wanted was to see my mother one last time and say goodbye because I thought that I was dying.”
Although many of Moreno’s doctors doubted that he would survive, one doctor, along with Moreno’s mother, kept fighting and tried another treatment that ultimately saved his life. Moreno had to learn to walk and talk again, but he faced those challenges with determination. When Moreno was 17, his mother and sister moved to the United States while he stayed in the Dominican Republic to finish high school. He spoke almost no English when he joined them in the U.S. He tried to take classes, but the language barrier was daunting, and he dropped out. His dream of being a physician, however, was still alive. Moreno spent the next several months studying English, immersing himself in the culture, and working to be able to help support his sister and his mother, who could not practice medicine in the U.S. By the fall of 2017, he felt more a bit more comfortable with the language and his ability to succeed and, although he was still working, he enrolled in Gaston
College. “My experience at Gaston College has been excellent since day one,” said Moreno. “I felt that I was supported and that my professors and the staff genuinely cared about my success and well-being. For example, the Financial Aid Office went out of their way to help me, and my Developmental Reading and English professor took me from not even knowing what the MLA format for writing papers was and not being familiar with English punctuation to being a relatively proficient writer.” He was accepted into the SPARC program in 2018 and delved into research projects, where he flourished. He has been involved in facultymentored undergraduate research on antibiotic resistance in the Catawba River Basin, as well as a separate project on the antibiotic properties of Eugenol, a natural organic compound found in cloves, cinnamon, and bay leaves. Moreno is a semi-finalist for the highly selective and prestigious Cooke Under-
Jesus Vina Moreno graduate Transfer Scholarship, and he is also a finalist for the Goodnight Scholarship from North Carolina State University. The recipients of each scholarship will be announced in late April or early May. The scholarship results will determine whether Moreno will attend UNC Chapel Hill or NC State to finish his Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in biology with a minor in psychology. He intends to apply to medical school when he completes his undergraduate studies.
Congratulations grads! Congratulations and best wishes for a bright journey ahead to the class of 2020 at East Gaston High School from Gaston College. Lisa Young, CCP Success and Outreach Coordinator at the college is seen holding the congratulatory placard. Gaston College photo

NC Stay at Home restrictions lifted May 8th Last week Governor Roy Cooper signed Executive Order No. 138 to modify North Carolina’s Stay At Home order and transition to Phase 1 of slowly easing certain COVID-19 restrictions effective Friday, May 8 at 5 pm. Certain businesses remain closed as the state continues battling COVID-19. “COVID-19 is still a serious threat to our state, and Phase 1 is designed to be a limited easing of restrictions that can boost parts of our economy while keeping important safety rules in place,” said Governor Cooper. “This is a careful and deliberate first
step, guided by the data, and North Carolinians still must use caution while this virus is circulating.” “We must continue to protect our families and neighbors as we take this cautious step forward. When you leave your home, follow the three W’s: Wear a face covering, wash your hands, and wait six feet apart,” said Dr. Mandy Cohen, Secretary of the NC Department of Health and Human Services. Today’s Order removes the distinction between essential and non-essential businesses. Retail businesses are allowed to open at 50% capacity and
will be required to direct customers to stand 6 feet apart, perform frequent cleanings, provide hand sanitizer when available, screen workers for symptoms and more. The Order allows people to leave their homes for commercial activity at any business that is open. Certain businesses remain closed, including bars, personal care businesses, entertainment venues, and gyms. Restaurants may only continue to serve customers for drivethrough, take out and delivery. All workers at retail and other businesses are recommended to wear cloth face
Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him
Wisdom: Choose wisely! Some dictionary definitions for wisdom are head-scratching dead ends like “soundness of action while applying experience, knowledge and good judgment.” Some are circular nonsense like “wisdom is a quality of being wise.” Others are dangerously evolutionist and flat like “knowledge and principles that develop within a specified society or period.” This is situation ethics at its best or rather worst! Why? Some virtuous qualities in life are not subject to change for any reason! Goodness, truth, honesty, and wisdom to name a few. So why be lead astray and adopt a flawed principle that changes with time or any aberrant whim of human nature? In 72 years I’ve learned a critical truth! Life without God as our center is a flat, two dimensional sojourn. I’ve been there; much flesh, some drugs, lots of alcohol, and more “self” than I can stomach in hindsight. It’s a path born from embracing an evolutionary slime pond theory where our ancestors were amoebas and apes; this life is all there is and I’m here to work hard, try to be good (whatever I decide that to be today) and then just slip back into the dirt. In sharp and dramatic contrast, when we look toward God and realize He is the author of all creation; that He made us in His image with purpose and a glorious eternity is real and available vs. oblivion and worm food then the real definition of wisdom becomes visible. Proverbs 9: 10-12 NIV. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowl-
edge of the Holy One is understanding. For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, Dennis Siracusa you alone will suffer.” Michael W. Smith wrote a penetrating and wonderfully introspective song called “All About You.” When the music fades Chorus: And all is stripped away I’m coming back to the heart of worship And I simply come And it’s all about you, It’s all about you Jesus Longing just to bring I’m sorry Lord, for the thing I’ve made it Something that’s of worth When it’s all about you, it’s all about you Jesus That will bless your heart I’ll bring you more than a song For a song in itself, is not what you have required You search much deeper within Through the way things appear You’re looking into my heart We would be wise to reflect on this revelation and the honesty and clarity of the lyrics. Find a Christ centered church, if you don’t have one and let those leaders set your feet on a path to a glorious life.
Every week, people are looking for businesses just like yours.
coverings. Teleworking is still encouraged for businesses that can practice it. Though small outdoor gatherings will be allowed in Phase 1, gatherings of more than 10 people generally are still prohibited. The Order encourages cloth face coverings to be worn when outside the home and in contact with others. Everyone who uses a face covering should adhere to this guidance without fear of profiling or bias. During Phase 1, childcare facilities will be open to serve families of parents who are working or looking for work. These centers will be required to follow strict cleaning protocols. Summer day camps can operate in compliance with NC DHHS guidelines. In explaining the Order, Governor Cooper and Sec-
retary Cohen reported North Carolina remains stable on the following key metrics: Trajectory in COVID-Like Illness (CLI) Surveillance Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s syndromic surveillance trend for COVID-like illness is decreasing. Trajectory of Lab-Confirmed Cases Over 14 DaysNorth Carolina’s trajectory of lab-confirmed cases over the last 14 days cases is slightly increasing. Trajectory in Percent of Tests Returning Positive Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s trajectory in percent of tests returning positive over the last 14 days is decreasing. Trajectory in Hospitalizations Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s trajectory of hospitalizations over the last 14 days is level.
In addition to these metrics, the state continues building capacity to be able to adequately respond to an increase in virus spread. These areas include: Laboratory Testing- North Carolina has doubled the daily testing rate. Tracing Capability-The Carolina Community Tracing Collaborative has received over 4,000 applications and is in the process of hiring 250 new contact tracers. Personal Protective Equipment- Supply chains continue to improve with the exception of gowns. The order is in effect until 5 pm on Friday, May 22. However, the end of this Order does not necessarily mean the state will move to Phase 2. Phase 2 will only start if data and indicators are in the right place.
Meditations Let God be your compass I enjoy hiking with my friends and cannot wait until we are on the trails again. I am smiling as I remember a hike when a fellow hiker had a new compass on his phone. He was excited to give it a try on the trail. The morning started beautifully, and we made it to the summit with no problem. After enjoying the view and our snacks, we donned our backpacks to finish our hike. In the first hour, we were continuing to enjoy the day until we noticed that we had not yet arrived at the bottom of the mountain. It seemed as if we continued to go upward instead of down. My friend kept saying, “It’s just over this ridge.” Well, after the fifth, “it’s just over this ridge,” we knew something was amiss. I kept asking, “Are we there yet?” We finally made it back to safety, of course, with a lot of ribbing we gave to our friend. We discovered the compass was correct. It just took us into more extended territory we were not expecting. Have you ever been in uncharted territory? Have you been on a path you did not know what would lie ahead, but you continued to take each step-in faith? Yes, it feels like our country and world are currently in that place of uncharted territory. In my Spiritual Director’s class last week, our instructor shared this quote, “The topography has changed, and old maps no longer work. How can we offer a compass?” (From Companioning Spiritual Orphans by Kent Ira Groff). I can relate to the article. I am tired of old worn-out maps, aren’t you? The maps that say, “We have always done it this way.” Well, maybe this season is a lesson for us that it is alright to charter a different way, a different path. Throw out the maps and pick up a com-
pass. As Christians, God guides and instructs us as a compass. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which Rev. Angela Pleasants you should go; I will District counsel you with Superintendent My eye upon you.” of Catawba Valley Psalm 32:8 NASB. Methodist Churches When Israel was in the wilderness, God led them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. God did not take away the cloud or fire from before Israel. When we know the Lord, we will be led by Him. God is a provider of everything we need, even when we are navigating through uncharted territory. Sometimes we are led into places where we keep asking, “Are we there yet?” Other times we are in a place where it seems we are at a stand-still. God’s compass will never lead us in the wrong direction. The road may seem longer than usual, but what lessons can we learn on the way? Israel’s lesson was to trust God as their provider and refuge. God led Israel out of Egypt to a new place for them to worship and trust God and that he might establish them as his people. Israel had to throw out their old way of living while in bondage in Egypt to a new way of living in trust. Could they learn to worship God while in their wilderness? If we cannot worship and trust God in our wilderness, how can we trust him to lead us into our Promise Land? What lessons are you learning while journeying through your uncharted territory? Maybe our first lesson begins with throwing out the map and trusting in God as our compass.

South Point High School’s men’s basketball team named State Men’s Basketball #1 Scholar Athlete Team By Charlotte Sautner The NCHSAA Scholar Athlete Program is a voluntary program sponsored by the Governor’s Highway Safety Program’s “Click It or Ticket.” It recognizes varsity teams and individual athletes for their excellence in the classroom. To be a scholar athlete team, the team must maintain a 3.1 unweighted grade point average for the designated semester and have at least five members. The NCHSAA presents a plaque to the top team in each sport, based on an unweighted team GPA. The top three teams in each sport are recognized. With an unweighted GPA of 3.705, the South Point High School men’s basketball team was named the top NCHSAA Scholar Athlete team in the state for their sport. They had the highest grade point average of all the North Carolina High School Athletic Association men’s basketball teams nominated for this award. This is the ninth South Point team to be named the state NCHSAA Scholar Athlete team in their sport. The other teams were Women’s Cross Country (2002-03), Men’s Cross Country (2005-06), Men’s Swimming and Diving (200809), Men’s Tennis (2010), Women’s Golf (2010 and 2012), Men’s Cross Country (2012-13 and 2013-14). The members of this year’s NCHSAA State Scholar Athlete men’s basketball team are Malakai Sadler, Logan Threatt, Cam Dyer, Ashton Harris, Cooper Ray, Ray Rose, Nate Natale, Ayden Baker, Grayson Hansen, and Sully Absher. The coaching staff is made up of Kody Kubbs, Head Men’s Basketball Coach; Davares Friday, Assistant Coach and William Lomax, Assistant Coach. Coach Kubbs wrote this about his team. “I am so proud of all this team accomplished this past year. We tied a school record with 18 wins, recorded our fourth straight winning season, and also qualified for the state playoffs for a fourth straight year – all school records! We played in the conference tournament championship and lost on a buzzer-beater in overtime against the eventual state champion, Shelby. These were all tremendous accomplishments, for which we are very proud, however, I am most proud of what my boys accomplished off the court. This group of boys was incredibly special. They are a really fun group of guys that bonded from day 1 and sacrificed for the good of the group. They volunteered to read to kids at Belmont Central Elementary and Page Primary and showed a commitment to giving back to their community. But, to be honored as the top academic basketball team in the entire state really takes the cake!
CROSSWORD PUZZLE South Point High School Boys Bsketball Team 2019-2020 There are over 400 high schools in the state of North Carolina, and our boys were the top academic achieving team. Wow! This honor is really a testament to my boys’ dedication to excellence in all that they do and their understanding of the term “studentathlete.” I could not be more proud of these boys. They are state champions!” Not only did South Point have the number one team in men’s basketball, we also had two other teams in the top three in their sport: Ladies Tennis, with a GPA of 3.91, finished second in the state and missed being the number one team by .04, and Ladies Swimming and Diving, with a GPA of 3.890, finished third in the state. The ladies tennis team was coached by Mrs. Patsy Adolph. Members of that team were Caroline Beaty, Brooke Cox, Anna Kauer, Holly Kellogg, Emily Koehler, Sarayu Kudaravalli, Sarah Leonhardt, Abigail Miss, Grace Nehring, Natalie O’Connor, Grace Sheppard and Emilia Vargas. Mrs. Adolph writes: “Our SPHS Women’s Tennis Team are a great group of wonderful young ladies. They strive for excellence both on the court and in the classroom; working hard to improve in every aspect of their lives. They are kind and caring individuals with high morals and good sportsmanship. We are definitely a tennis family, and I am proud of each and every one of them. I am very fortunate and honored to be their Coach.” The ladies swimming and diving team is coached by Mary Ellen Lewis. The members of the team are Sarah Axtell, Avery Boyd, Ryleigh Butler, Brooke Cox, Chloe Hamilton, Alyson Horne, Anna Huffstickler, Sierra Hullander, Avery Lester, Sydney Lester, Abigail Long, Kailey McAlister, Bao Phan, Mary Smallwood, Cara Targonski, Brooke Villemagne, Macie Wagner, Mary Walker and Emma White. Mrs. Lewis said this was an amazing group of young ladies. Four of them were junior marshals last year, and one was the Chief Marshal. They were conference champs, fifth in
the region, and six of them qualified for the state meet. She is so proud of what they do in the classroom and in the pool. South Point Athletic Director Kent Hyde said, “Our kids are getting it done, not only on the athletic field of play, but also in the class-
room. This is due, in part, to the great efforts of our teachers, our coaches, our counselors, our front office and support staff, our administrators, and our parents and community.” And, as always, GO BIG RED.

South Point honors two senior golfers The second in a series of articles highlighting South point High spring sports seniors. These students are members of the men’s golf team. Coach Josh Justice writes: “Brenden Bradshaw and Jared Lareau were the only two seniors on the men’s golf team this season. Both young men were great leaders for our younger guys. They loved to play and work on their game and always had a great energy and attitude going to practice or a match. At the point of Jared Lareau the shutdown this season, Brenden was the team’s number one golfer and Jared fluctuated between the number 2 and number 3 golfer, so the underclassmen will really have to work hard to fill their shoes. Both Brenden and Jared were very competitive in the Southwestern 2A conference and were able to score well to help our team. We were only able to play one conference match before the season was cut short, which resulted in a 3rd place finish out of 7 teams. Brenden and Jared played well that day and were shaving off strokes each week. This fall, Brenden will be attending Cape Fear Community College to study business administration and pre-law. Jared will be attending Central Piedmont Community College to further his education. He will be studying business. There is no doubt these two young men will be successful in the next chapters in life because of their work ethic, toughness, and positive personalities.”

spring sports participants active. Back in March, the Belmont Parks and Recreation Department staff came up with sports word searches, cross word puzzles and mazes for their youth participants for a chance to compete for $10, $15 and $20 gift cards to Academy Sports and Outdoors.
Several participants battled to get their answer sheets in first to the department to meet the contest deadline. After all entries were collected and reviewed, there were 6 winners selected. Winners Pictured are: Paisley Hartsell, Ian and Emma McGinnis, and Hudson Sass. Not Pictured winners are:
