Mt. Holly council recognizes outstanding citizens and employees by Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

Last Mondays' regular monthly meeting of the Mt. Holly city council saw that body recognize a number of outstanding folks. Mt. Holly native and Stuart Cramer High junior Marissa Garrison was lauded with a proclamation connected with her work as Miss North Carolina Outstanding Teen. Garrison has used the opportunity as Miss North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen in appearances on television and at events around the state to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation since the sudden death of close friend and classmate Destiny Stafford and learning of the lives which were saved by the selfless act of Destiny’s family in donating her organs. Garrison has also has used her talents to take action for this cause that she believes in by organizing an annual talent show which has raised thousands of dollars over the last three years for the Destiny Lives On Foundation, a nonprofit organization named after her friend which provides financial support for families of organ donors and recipients. Garrison is a straight-A student and plans to attend the University of Alabama to study musical theater and dance performance on a full tuition scholarship which she received as a result of her participation in the Outstanding Teen scholarship

program. The council also recognized Mt. Holly police department Sgt. Fred Tindall who retired April 1. Tindall began his law enforcement career on April 1, 1981 with the Cramerton PD. He came to Mt. Holly PD on Oct. 16, 2000. During his career, Tindall performed a variety of duties including narcotics investigation. One such case resulted in the recovery of around $2.7 million discovered inside PVC pipes. The seized cash helped MHPD buy new rifles, an ATV, and equipment that will be used in the new police substation located in the soon to be opened North Fire Station. Mt. Holly PD chief Don Roper read excerpts from a sheet of remarks that Tindall's fellow officers had penned regarding their thoughts on him as an officer and gentleman. Comments included- “he always helps out”, “he is a great leader”, “he is a wealth of knowledge”, “he is always there for you”. Roper also made several remarks about Tindall that he declared “come from the heart”. “I can attest that Fred has Jedi status as an undercover officer,” Roper said. “He's part Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, and Kevin Costner. He has been like a father to a lot of people in law enforcement.” Mt. Holly mayor Bryan Hough presented Miss North Carolina Outstanding Teen In addition to the council proclamation, Tindall Marissa Garrison with a proclamation for her community service work at last was also presented with a retirement watch as well week's city council meeting. Belmont woman finds letters New Mt. Holly that are a window on her North Fire Station set to open family’s wartime past by Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com

Susan Jones of Belmont recently came across a couple of letters and some very old photos that opened up a window on her family history during World War I and World War II. “I was looking through my nightstand drawer and came across an old envelope that had the letters and photos in it,” Jones said. The letters are typewritten copies of the originals. The photos are originals going back to around 1940-era. “The original letters must be deteriorated and my mother copied them on a typewriter many years ago,” Jones said. “The originals might be in my aunt's house in Yonkers, N.Y. She's 93-years-old.” Belmont’s Susan Jones looks over copies of family letters The first letter is one that was outlining her Scottish relative’s actions in WWI and WWII. written to Jones's maternal great Photo by Alan Hodge of archival picture grandmother concerning the death of

her son (Jones's great-uncle) Sgt. George Hendry in battle during WWI. Hendry, a native of Scotland, was in the Royal Field Artillery, Battery B 255 Battalion. The Major who wrote the letter gave a full account of Hendry's last combat action on July 28, 1918 somewhere in France or Flanders. “He had established a lamp station on a hill which we had just captured and when he got in communication with the battery by lamp he and I and another officer went forward to the other side of the hill to try and get a view of the enemy's position. We were all three together and the enemy saw us and turned on a battery and one shell landed almost on top of us and killed your son instantly.” The Major went on to praise George. The brand new Mt. Holly North Fire Station on Lucia-Riverbend Highway is within a whisker of being ready for business. The 6,000 sq. ft..station building is up and final details inside are being checked off one by one. Outside, crews have started landscaping the grounds. Everything is bright, shiny, and ready for the fire engine and firefighters to come on board. Miles-McClellan Construction is doing the build. Miles-McClellan is also building the new Mt. Holly public works building and has done a 911 center in Greensboro. “We are very excited and ready to move in,” said MHFD chief Ryan Baker. “We should be ready in a couple of weeks. The new station will allow us to provide quicker fire and emergency medical response to the area.” The station will house an engine, water rescue equipment, and in the future perhaps another truck.
