Mt. Holly recognizes PD chief upon his “retirement” By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info The City of Mt. Holly recognized police chief Don Roper last week at the council meeting and presented him with a plaque and watch upon his retirement. But the fact of the matter is, Roper is not really retiringat least not totally- he’s just stepping back a bit from his full, very full, time routine. Roper explained the situ-
ation. “As far as my retirement, basically this arrangement allows me to secure for my family the benefits I have earned over the years, while continuing to serve our community as the police chief,” Roper said. “Under this arrangement, I will keep my same duties, while continuing to hold full authority as a police officer, and as the Chief of Police. The city manager and I began looking at options more than
a year ago in an effort to see if we could find the best way for me to continue serving even after I was eligible to retire under the state retirement regulations. We contacted representatives from the NC Training and Standards Division, the NC state retirement system, and even spoke with other communities that had developed a similar arrangement that allowed their chief to continue serving See CHIEF, Pages 8 & 9
