John Hope loved Mt. Holly Third in a series of stories remembering influential and pioneering African-American citizens from our area. By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

The late John Hope made a big impact on Mt. Holly before he passed away on June 28, 2016 at the age of 63. Hope was a long time City of Mt. Holly employee. In 2005 he received the 15 year award from the City. In 2006 the City of Mount Holly presented him with the Community Award and in 2014 he was the recipient of the City of Mount Holly’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Key to the City. He was born in Mecklenburg County, son of the late Robert and Zelma Anderson Hope. He was a member of the Kappa

Fraternity, and an inductee in the Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame. As 2011 Mount Holly Man of the Year and a former Grand Marshall of the Mount Holly Christmas Parade, Mr. Hope was an active and vital member of the Mount Holly Community. He served as treasurer of the Gaston County Democratic Party and Board of Directors member of the Mount Holly Community Relief Organization (CRO) Board of Directors. He was a former recipient of Gaston County’s Organization of Community Concerns Award in recognition and appreciation for his many years of service to the community. Hope was active in the Community Relief Organization as well as the Mount Holly Historical Society. Hope was also one of the founders of the Black History See HOPE, Page 2

This week’s Belmont Sports Hall of Fame induction spotlight shines on Joe Messer who will join Pam Smith, Shelley Frye Keen, and Don Davis as part of the 2019 Inductee class. The banquet will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at 7:00 pm in the Family Life Center of Park Street United Methodist Church. Every kid growing up in Belmont in the 1960s, 1970s, and the 1980s knew and loved Joe Messer because of his dedication to supporting the community and community athletics. If you were lucky enough, you could have had Joe as your Little League coach. In 1973, his Little League team went to the state championship but did not win it. For many years, he was the president of Belmont Little League and presided over teams fielded by the Belmont Rotary Club, Belmont Kiwanis Club, Belmont Optimist Club, and the Belmont Jaycees. Those service organizations over the years have recognized Joe for his volunteerism, excellent coaching, and for building character in young athletes. In 2012, a Belmont Little League field was named in his honor. Joe was the voice of Belmont High School, South Point High School, and the American Legion baseball on WCGC for thirty plus years. From the 50s to the 80s, Joe handled the public address color commentary for football and baseball games at

Joe Messer Davis Park and South Point High School. Roscoe Helton and Joe were responsible for moving the PA equipment between Davis Park and Lineberger Stadium weekly between games. Junior high kids and the midget football teams were also recipients of his great commentary during their Wednesday and Saturday games. His voice was broadcast on WLOS during basketball season in Asheville. From its inception in 1988 until 2001, Joe Messer was the master of ceremonies for the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame Banquet, and he was also sought after as a banquet speaker for Belmont organizations, American Legion and South Point High School sports banquets. What can you say about Joe Messer that has not been said? Joe willingly poked fun at himself with the 1980s Donkey Basketball games that were played in the Belmont Junior High School gym to raise money for the See MESSER, Page 2

Or, the time that the Good Guys from Big WAYS Radio came to Belmont for a charity basketball against the South Point cheerleaders, and Joe dressed like a woman to play in the game. That picture made the Clarion which is the South Point High School annual and his appearance raised a ton of money for the Booster Club. His fundraising prowess for the Big Red Booster club is well known and his willingness to go the extra mile to help the youth of Belmont is irreplaceable. Like the men who came before him, Joe Messer is of that generation that worked hard and willingly helped their neighbor. The author fondly remembers several occasions when Joe made a quarter, dime, nickel, or

The award is given by the Office of the Governor for excellence in the recipient’s career field and service to the state. In Alan’s case, it was

He truly is a Belmont icon and his induction into the 2019 Class of the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame is a fitting tribute to a life well lived. Join Belmont sports fans on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at 7:00 pm as we celebrate local sports heroes like Joe and the rest of the inductees. Tickets are $20.00 and available at Belmont Drug in East Belmont and State Farm at 140 North Main Street, Belmont. Tickets will not be available at the door on the night of the event, and this event is quickly selling out so do not wait to pick up tickets.

From Page 1 Forum that chronicles and celebrates the city’s African-American Heritage. The Black History Forum started out with just a few members but now its annual banquet packs the Grand Hall at the Municipal Complex. Hope called the Black History Forum his “baby. Hope grew up in Mount Holly and attended Rollins School. He went on to graduate St. Augustine University in Raleigh. A hard blow fell on Hope in 1996 when he suffered kidney failure. A 1999 transplant failed in 2006 and he had to go to dialysis several times a week while looking for another donor. Hope turned that lemon into lemonade by working with the Kidney Foundation giving lectures on how to not only survive, but thrive under those health conditions. Mt. Holly city manager

recalled Hope and his legacy. “John Hope worked for the City of Mount Holly 18 years before he retired, Jackson said. “Therefore, our relationship began in the workplace, even with me being his supervisor for a number of years. In the workplace John was a valued employee, who could be counted on to do a great job. He took pride in going beyond the call of duty. It’s nice as a supervisor to have an employee that you don’t have checked on to make sure they are doing the right thing for the company. John was really community conscious and loved Mount Holly, which was his home. The same traits described above are the same traits exhibited in his community service. John can rest in peace knowing that he dedicated himself to help make Mount Holly a better place through his service.

First recipient of James W. Buie Scholarship completes Gaston College BLT training Gaston County Police Officer Allison Kennedy graduated from the Gaston College Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) academy in December 2019. She enrolled in the certification course after earning her four-year degree in Criminal Justice from Belmont Abbey College in May 2019. Kennedy was the first recipient of the James W. Buie Scholarship, which funded her education at Belmont Abbey. The James W. Buie Scholarship, a joint effort of Belmont Abbey College, the Gaston County Police Department, and Gaston County Schools, was established in December 2016 with the goal of increased diversity in the department with minority and female applicants receiving priority. The scholarship honors James W. Buie, a

graduate of Belmont Abbey College, who joined the Gaston County Police Department in 1987. During his 30-year law enforcement career, Buie served in every unit and function within the department. His leadership abilities and strong work ethic allowed him to rise through the ranks to become Chief of Police in 2011. Chief Buie, now retired, was the first African American Police Chief in Gaston County history. “We are excited to partner with Belmont Abbey College and Gaston County Schools in this program, with the emphasis on creating a more diverse police department that represents the citizens of Gaston County while honoring former Chief James Buie,” said Joseph D. Ramey, who succeeded Buie as Gaston County

Police Chief. The James W. Buie Scholarship covers full tuition at Belmont Abbey College. “The first two years of the program, the scholarship committee, made up of representatives from Gaston County and the Abbey, identified a rising Abbey junior Criminal Justice major and a high school senior from a Gaston County high school,” said Dr. Julia Foster Beeman, Chair and Associate Professor, Belmont Abbey Department of Criminal Justice. “Subsequent years will name only one high school senior. Allison Kennedy was a rising junior at the time of the award, and was selected from a competitive field of applicants for her strong academic record, her desire to support the Gaston County community as a

public servant, and her enthusiasm for the opportunity to make a difference. She went on to complete her degree, graduated from the Abbey in May 2019, then began the BLET program at Gaston College last summer, culminating in her graduation in December.” As a recipient of the Buie Scholarship, Kennedy has a 5-year commitment to the Gaston County Police Department. “Gaston College is the state-accredited Basic Law Enforcement Training academy for our service region,” said Dennis Crosby, Director of the Criminal Justice Academy and BLET program at Gaston College. “This program is accredited through the North Carolina Criminal Justice Standards Division so once you graduate from our academy and pass the state certification exam, you can be a law enforcement officer anywhere in the state.” Although admission to the Gaston College BLET program accepts students with a high school diploma or equivalent, the Gaston County Police Department is the only police department in the Carolinas to require a four-year degree. Upon receiving that degree, graduates can enroll in the Gaston College BLET program to prepare for certification. The department does hire entrylevel officers prior to BLET, so these new recruits can enjoy the benefits of full-time employment while completing training. “Those who pass a mandatory background check after completing the BLET program are guaranteed a position with the Gaston County Police Department and have a commitment to fulfill the Buie Scholarship obligations,” said Chief Ramey. “Allison Kennedy is now employed as an officer with the Gaston County Police Department and is currently participating in the department’s 16-week field training course.” “I became interested in law enforcement when I was in high school and started to think about my career,” said Kennedy. “I decided that I wouldn’t want to work behind a desk for a large portion of my day, but I also wanted to have the opportunity to interact with people in the community in a positive way. I found that law enforce-

Allison Kennedy and Gaston Police Chief Joseph D. Ramey. Gaston College photo ment was a balance between enforcing the law and also being an advocate and providing aid to those in need.” Kennedy continued, “At 19 years old, it was a challenge to think that in the short years to come, I would begin my training to become a Gaston County Police Officer. The department I was about to join showed the utmost confidence in my abilities, even before I was fully confident, and that allowed me to develop a sureness that law enforcement was where I was supposed to be following my education at Belmont Abbey. The Gaston County Police and the Belmont Abbey Criminal Justice Department provided a foundation of education to grow through prior to attending the BLET program at Gaston College, and I couldn’t be more thankful that I was a recipient of the Buie Scholarship. “Being a recipient of this scholarship provided me with the ability to attend school with financial stability, but also an opportunity for employment following college. To my knowledge, there aren’t many programs that allow the whole package and I’m so grateful to the Gaston County Police Department. This scholarship changed my outlook on the things that were going on in society. As I was finishing college, I started thinking with the mindset of a law enforcement officer and to think of what I would do when my time came to be in the shoes of those I was studying.” Currently there are three active Buie scholars at Belmont

Abbey--two females and a Hispanic male. “The program has done well meeting the stated objective of increasing diversity in the county police department,” said Dr. Beeman. “The Criminal Justice program at the Abbey works closely with Gaston College Associate in Arts and Associate in Science graduates to support their academic and career goals via the North Carolina Comprehensive Articulation Agreement that facilitates transferring their credits so they can complete their 4-year degree. I look forward to further developing that relationship.” Kennedy looks forward to being a positive influence as a police officer. “Throughout my career at the Gaston County Police Department, I hope to grow and develop as an officer and hopefully move up in rank as the years’ progress,” said Kennedy. “On a daily basis, my goal is to give those I interact with a positive experience with law enforcement. In a day when there is much skepticism about law enforcement, I hope that I can be one link in the chain that changes that perception.” “Law enforcement is constantly striving to increase our standards,” said Crosby. “College-educated officers are in high demand. That is why the James Buie Scholarship is so important.” The James W. Buie Scholarship application process for fall 2020 will open when the Gaston County budget process is completed.

Tri-County Animal Rescue:

Ferrell Buchanan passes away

Pet of the Week Tri-County Animal Rescue has a Labrador Retriever mix named Bailey as the Pet of the Week. Bailey is just 10 months old. She is sweet as pie and loves to be with her person. Bailey was adopted from Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Control in October. The owners love her but the family is highly allergic to her. Bailey is a little shy when first meeting but warms up to her people quickly. Bailey would like another dog to play and a fenced yard. She has a beautiful short hair coat of tan and white. Grooming is a bath and towel dry. Bailey is spayed, current on vaccines and micro-chipped. Please come meet this beautiful girl this weekend. The Labrador Retriever is one terrific family dog -- given enough vigorous exercise (preferably including swimming and fetching games) and not just a walk around the block once a day. Too much confinement and not enough exercise can lead to rambunctiousness and destructive chewing. One of the best dogs for children of all ages, Labrador Retrievers are kindly, good-natured, and take most things in stride. Most Labrador Retrievers are very friendly with everyone, though compared to Golden Retrievers, many Labs are just a bit more conservative with their affections. Also more independent -- though quite biddable and responsive to obedience training, some Labrador Retrievers can have a noticeable stubborn streak. Some have necks like bulls and barely notice tugs on the leash. You must control this breed’s tendency to chew on objects and to mouth your hands -- provide a box filled with toys that he can carry around in his mouth. The Labrador Retriever matures slowly, remaining a spirited teenager for several years, which sounds fun . . . but does require patience and training to manage. If you are looking for an addition to your family, please come out and meet the Tri-County pets this weekend. There are many

available pets at the Gastonia PetSmart located at 3698 East Franklin Boulevard this Saturday noon to 6 pm. About TriCounty Animal Rescue Tri-County Animal Rescue is a non-profit Bailey organization serving Lincoln, Gaston and other surrounding counties. We are committed to ending pet homelessness in this area and we need your continued support. If you cannot adopt a pet, then support TriCounty in other ways. We need volunteers and donations to continue our mission of finding homes for these unwanted animals. Please help Tri-County Animal Rescue continue to save pets by adopting your next pet this weekend? Our “needs” list includes: towels, Clorox, laundry detergent, paper towels, dry dog food and dry cat food. Gaston County, the Town of McAdenville and the Montcross Area Chamber lost a good friend recently with the passing of Farrell Buchanan. Mr. Buchanan was a former mayor of McAdenville and an advisory director on the Chamber Board. He was a servant leader with strong convictions and a deep love for his community. Even after several years of serious illness, he still had a desire to continue serving his town. He will be missed in his community and in the Chamber. In this photo from 2015, Mayor Buchanan was speaking at a Chamber Mayors Forum breakfast. Photo provided

Abbey offers new online chat service will provide you the answer directly. Some students have already tested out Benny the Bot and it has received positive reviews. “This is really easy to use, and I do not have to search for what I need,” said Taylor Cozart a senior sports management major. Faculty and staff helped to test the service prior to launch. “Overall, Benny the Bot did pretty well,” said Dr. Nathalie Cote in Psychology. “It gave me links to relevant information even when I misspelled psychology.” The artificial intelligence online chat scans and pulls data from the Belmont Abbey College website, it then responds based on the data it finds, using that data to make a prediction. The bot is learning as it goes, so when students and parents ask Benny the Bot a question, it will learn from the interaction. With each interaction, the bot

requests feedback so as to assess its response and improve the next one. The college will also soon roll out website and Facebook live chat with the bot. Visitors will have the option to talk to someone live via chat primarily during business hours. Over the last several months the college’s Information Technology, Academics, Admissions, Campus Life, and Marketing, have worked collaboratively to

develop the online chat. The college teamed up with Ivy. ai, a company that helps colleges and universities around the world assist students and parents find information more efficiently. “The multiple distribution channels, the future connection with Facebook, and the ability to integrate live chat made picking Ivy.ai an easy decision,” said Rolando Rivas, Executive Director for College Marketing and Communications.

Novel Coronavirus information and update... Novel Coronavirus is a virus identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China. To date, there have been no confirmed cases of novel corona virus in North Carolina. There have been 11 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in the United States in the following states: Washington, California, Arizona, Illinois and Massachusetts. While person-to-person spread among close contacts has been detected with this virus, at this time the virus is NOT currently spreading in the United States. For confirmed novel corona infections, reported illnesses have ranged from people with little to no symptoms to people being severely ill and dying. The most common symptoms can include

fever, cough and shortness of breath. However, individuals are not considered to be at risk for infection unless they meet the following criteria: Individuals with fever or symptoms of lower respiratory infection, such as cough or shortness of breath AND individuals who have traveled to mainland China within 14 days of symptom onset AND/OR individuals who have had close contact with a person confirmed with novel coronavirus infection. Individuals not meeting these criteria are not considered to be at risk for novel coronavirus infection. The risk for coronavirus infection in the US and especially in North Carolina where there are currently no confirmed cases is low. However, public health officials are taking

this disease very seriously by having ongoing communication with the NC Division of Public Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and providing ongoing guidance to local healthcare providers to ensure prompt identification, evaluation and reporting of any suspected cases. Updates will be provided to the community as needed regarding any significant developments in this response, including a positive case in NC, should there be one in the future. Everyday preventive actions people may take to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses include: Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; be-

fore eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty. Avoid touching

your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Stay home when you are sick. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Clean and disinfect frequently touched

objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe. This is a rapidly evolving situation. For the most current information on novel corona virus, please visit: https://epi.dph.ncdhhs.gov/ cd/diseases/2019nCoV.

This week many couples will celebrate Valentine’s Day. This is the time of year when many people concentrate on love. Jesus said in John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (NKJV). Jesus said those words in that upper room on the night He had celebrated the Passover meal with His disciples. He knew that soon, He would die on the cross, and rise again. Shortly, He would be in heaven with the Father. The disciples were to begin the church, and Jesus wanted them to love everyone they encountered the same way He had loved them. In the Bible, love is the theme. From beginning to end, we see God’s love for those He created. With love being so important, we need to understand what love is. Perhaps one of the greatest chapters in the Bible concerning love, is 1 Corinthians 13. In this chapter, Paul writes of the importance of love, and what love should be. In 1 Corinthians 13:7-8a, Paul writes that love “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails” (NKJV). We live in a world today that is often hateful,

evil, selfish, and hopeless. People today mistreat others, even their own families. Many seek how they can better themselves at the expense of others. Rev. Trent Tankin Too many love conditionally. Our world rejects the truth of God, and rejoices only in self. Much of our world is the total opposite of the love Paul wrote about. Love is patient, seeking to show kindness to everyone. Love builds others up, believing in the potential of others. Love is good, rejoicing in the good things of life, rejoicing in the truths of God. Love endures through both good times, as well as the hard times of life, and life’s sorrows. Love hopes in all things. Our world is so hopeless, with many seeing no reason to go on, yet love, the love of God, gives us hope of a brighter day in Jesus. Most of all, love never fails. As we know, the things of this world fail, yet God’s love never fails. We sin, we rebel, and fail God too often, yet God continues to love us. God loves us so much, that He gave His only Son to die for us. Jesus defeated death, and our sin. One day we will see Jesus face to face. All of this is because of the unfailing love of God. Do you know the love that never fails? Do you know Jesus? Experience His love today!

By Shelton Fisher Fun fact! When I was growing up, I would often wake up in the early hours of the morning and do my homework. I don’t mean just before school; I’m saying 3:30 or 4:00 AM to allot myself enough time to go through my subjects and really dig deep into the material. My alarm would go off and I could smell the pot of Maxwell House over-top of Dad’s L&M cigarette to greet me as I shuffled to the den with tired eyes and a backpack. Fast forward a little over a decade and to this day, I find myself restless at night but not over homework. It is now with ideas for stories and columns and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. What does any of this have to do with this week’s issue? Valentine’s Day has fallen upon us and the other night as I tossed and turned, I found myself attempting to build an acronym for the occasion. After all, I believe we could use a little L.O.V.E these days. L is for Learning. Don’t take your time for granted because each day there is an opportunity to learn something new. It doesn’t even have to be something groundbreaking and can just be something small, like a new route to work or a “life hack” to make your everyday tasks easier. If you’re looking for something new and exciting however, leave it to good ol’ Google to lead you on the path to your next big adventure in life. Try new experiences and remember that the worst thing that can happen is that you don’t like it. You’ll never know if you don’t try, am I right? O is for Often. Life has a way of consuming us. Between work and school, planning, going places, doing things, and constantly being on the run, we sometimes forget to decompress and think of ourselves. Take time every so often and do what my mother would call a “deep cleansing breath” (I had to take a LOT of these growing up). It’s simple; you just inhale through your nose to capacity and exhale through your mouth. It almost feels like releasing pressure out of your body into the world for it to just kind of linger and dissipate. Also, remind yourself that you’re doing a great job at just being yourself on a regu-

lar basis. It takes a lot of hard work to be you! Not just anyone can do it, so tell yourself that as often as you can for a little confidence boost when you Shelton Fisher need it. V is for Variety. It’s the spice of life; or so they say. Keep things interesting by doing different activities or trying new things. For example, Kimberly recently subscribed us to this food delivery service called “Hello Fresh”. They send you recipes and ingredients, but the kicker is that you then prepare and cook the meals to the finished product. Trust me, I’m all for cooking and trying new things but when I realized I was going to be making jam out of tomatoes and onions for one of the burger recipes… I was somewhat cautious to say the least. At the end of the day however, it turned out to be one of our new favorites and the jam is fantastic! Sometimes it takes going out on a limb and trying things a little out of the ordinary, to discover that your wild card may become your new regular. E is for Enjoy. This one is one that even I need to work on. I don’t know about you, but I’ve spent a lot of time upset. Whether it’s because of my job or trying to find enough time in the day to get everything done when I’m off. There are times when I find myself consumed with missing my dad and wishing that things were different. My point is that life is too short to have the joy sucked out of it. It doesn’t matter what’s going on in the world right now; what’s going on in YOUR world right now? Are YOU okay? Take each day and enjoy the time you have with yourself and the ones you love because one day things will change. So, there it is ladies and gentlemen. I know this one seems to be a little more about selfcare than Cupid but from my own personal experience, love is best received if you love yourself as a person. Happy Valentine’s Day!

South Fork River reaches record flood stage... Last Thursday saw more rain fall on our area in a single day in February in 142 years. The South Fork River went on a rampage and crested at more than six feet above flood stage at a monitoring station in Lowell. Flood waters inundated parts of Cramerton and McAdenville closing parks and roads. Here are some scenes in those two towns from the major flooding event. See more high water scenes on page 11. Remember safety first when cleaning up storm debris Recent severe storms resulted in damaged and downed trees and a lingering threat of wind and flooding. The N.C. Forest Service is encouraging homeowners and anyone looking to clean up after a storm to exercise caution and think safety first. “Everyone should be extra cautious when assessing storm damage,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler.“If you’re a landowner concerned about your woodlands, talk to your county ranger or a consulting forester who can help you determine if you need a plan for managing damaged timber.” Unless a damaged tree is a safety risk, tree removal decisions can come later after the storm cleanup. After a storm, hasty or emotional decisions about damaged trees can result in unnecessary removals or drastic pruning decisions. The following are some basic guidelines: Debris cleanupCleaning up downed debris presents many safety risks, including a debris field making for poor footing and

potentially downed electric lines. If electrical wires are an issue, do not attempt tree work. Contact your utility company and let them remove the electrical wires. If you use a chainsaw, do so in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Work only on the ground and always wear personal protective equipment such as a hard hat and hearing and eye protection. Be aware of cutting any branches under tension or pressure. Perform a general safety inspection of your treesIs the soil around the base of the tree lifting or cracking? This may be an indication the tree may be falling over. Saturated soils and high winds can lead to uprooted trees. Long periods of standing water can cause additional stress and mortality. Look up into the canopy of the tree. Are there any cracked, split, broken or hanging branches? These problems will need to be inspected and addressed by a qualified arborist. Tree Pruning vs. Tree Removal-

Trees that have lost branches and are not an immediate hazard may be preserved with corrective pruning. This decision does not need to be made immediately and should wait until after the cleanup. Again, a qualified arborist should inspect the tree to assist you in making your decision. Choose a qualified and insured tree service or consulting arborist. To find qualified arborists in your area, visit The International Society of Arboriculture at www. treesaregood.com, the American Society of Consulting Arborists at www.asca-consultants.org, or the Tree Care Industry Association at www. treecareindustry.org. You can get more information and advice on proper tree care and tree assessment following a storm by logging onto http://ncforestservice. gov and following the links to storm recovery under forest health. Additional advice on proper tree care can be found on the N.C. Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program webpage at

Last Thursday’s flooding also hit Mt. Holly. The Mt. Holly Fire Dept. evacuated one apartment building at Century Plaza Apartments Thursday night near Highland Street and East Charlotte Avenue. Cramer varsity basketball wins four straight By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com

All season the Stuart Cramer basketball team has shown flashes of what they can do. Now, as the Storm turns into the final stretch of the regular season, those flashes are beginning to turn into a steady burning light. Cramer is riding a fourgame winning streak. The Storm is showing that at any given time they’re capable of beating just about anybody. The question facing Cramer now is simple. Is this late surge all just a little too late? With just two games left in the regular season, Cramer is 12-10 overall and 3-7 in conference action. At this point, a playoff spot is far from guaranteed. With a 3-7 league showing it’s apparent that Cramer won’t take the Big South 3A. However, that doesn’t mean the team doesn’t have a legitimate shot at landing a spot in the upcoming North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) playoffs. Things just need to break Cramer’s way. Right now Cramer is hot.

While it’s true the Storm haven’t always been consistent this season it looks like their players have finally found their footing and have figured it out. In recent games, the Storm have beat West Stanly 88-70, North Gaston 75-62, Chase 75-60, and Ashbrook 68-59. If Cramer continues to play this well, they may be able to do something special down the stretch. “I think we are starting to grow up,” head coach Brad Sloan said. “We are a young team and we have been up and down on a roller coaster all season.” Coach Sloan is right, Cramer is definitely a young team, many of their top players are underclassmen. Having a young team has been a double edge sword for Cramer. On one side you have a group with no experience. On the other, you have untapped potential and room to grow. It looks like Cramer’s lack of experience is becoming less of an issue. Things are working out as the younger players are maturing

Lady Storm vs. Chase Trojans in basketball play The Stuart Cramer Lady Storm basketball players tangled with Chase and when it was all over had a huge 51-16 victory. Here are the girls in action. Photos by Amy Craig

and their true potential is finally coming to fruition. “The light bulb has come on and we are starting to figure it out as a team,” Sloan added. No one player can do it all. To win you need good starters and a solid bench. Players like senior Tyrese Jeffries have played well this year. However, at this time the players that are making a big impact are sophomores, Will Kelly and Derek Bradley. “Will Kelly is our leader. He has been strong for us all season,” coach Sloan explained. “He is in the top three in all our statistical categories.” As for Bradley, well, coach Sloan thinks this young man has come on strong at just the right time. “Derek Bradley has really stepped up his game,” Sloan went on. “He’s had some really good games for us recently. He’s figured it out. We wouldn’t be on the streak we are on without Derek’s play.” Bradley’s play is illustrated in the stat sheets. For example against Chase,

Bradley had 20 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. So back to the playoffs. It’s hard to say where Cramer goes from here. The Storm have a two-tier path to the playoffs. On one hand, if the Storm can win the Big South 3A tournament then they get an automatic playoff bid. However, that’s asking a lot. The safest bet for Cramer is for the Storm to finish strong and rack up a few more wins to increase their chances. Right now if things stay the way they are, then Cramer has a 50/50 shot at making the playoffs. But, if Cramer finishes strong they should nab a bracket spot. When asked about how the playoffs shake out, coach Sloan didn’t speculate. He only stated the obvious. “We need a strong finish,” Sloan stressed. This week Cramer finishes the regular season with home games against Huss and Forestview.

Of course, winning didn’t come easy at first for Sebastian. Perna came to the Mountain Island wrestling program as a 98-pound freshman with a whole lot to learn. Over the years applied himself, worked hard and pushed to get to where he is today. “He didn’t win a lot in his freshman year,” coach Glaser explained. “It took him a while to get there. He now understands the process and he is reaping the fruits of his labor.” During his time at MI Sebastian Perna has definitely earned the respect of his fellow wrestlers and coaches. In fact, this is the second year in a row that Sebastian has garnered that award. As it turns out wrestling isn’t the only thing Sebastian has going for him. In addition to being a standout athlete Sebastian Perna is also a top-tier student with a bright future. According to coach Glaser, Sebastian is undecided about whether he wants to wrestle at the next level. While Sebastian’s wrestling

future may be uncertain, the path he was chosen for himself in life is not. “He wants to be an aerospace engineer,” Glaser went on to say. “He’s a gifted student who gets straight A’s.” It looks like Sebastian is a goal-driven young man who knows what it takes to succeed in life. If past performance is any indication of future success Sebastian Perna is well on his way to a productive future.
