Stanley Middle teacher named Gaston Outstanding Educator 2017 By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
“This is wonderful!” “I thought it would never happen!” “I love Stanley Middle School!” Those are just a few of the exhortations that Stanley Middle School teacher John Stone expressed after being named Gaston County Schools 2017 Outstanding Educator and being presented with the keys for a new car from KIA of Gastonia. Stone teaches language arts, serves as the AIG (academically and intellectually gifted) chairperson, and coaches the robotics team at Stanley Middle. The Outstanding Educator event took place last Thursday at Stuart Cramer High. Hundreds of Gaston County Schools employees, family, and friends filled the auditorium there to cheer on their favorite from the 55 nominees- one from each school in the county. Nominees ran the gamut and included teachers, custodians, office staff, cafeteria staff, and more. Gaston Schools superintendent Jeff Booker welcomed the throng and declared the event the fourth most exciting day of the school year trailing only the start of school, the See EDUCATORS page 3

Mt. Holly Community Garden set to rock the holidays
By Alan Hodge

The combination of cabbages, kale, onions and other cool season crops combined with Christmas decorations might sound unusual, but the Mt. Holly Community Garden will pull this mix off again this year with its 3rd annual Enchantment at the Garden event. The festivities will have each of the garden's 54 beds festooned with holiday decorations skillfully and artfully incorporated into the vegetables and herbs flourishing there. The action will take place Dec. 8 from 5pm-9pm. The garden is located in downtown Mt. Holly next to First United Methodist Church. “The event has been called the 'McAdenville of Gardens' because of all the wonderful decora-
November 22, 1963- 54 years ago- was the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. For folks who were alive then, it was a time they will never forget. Here are some recollections from local people who lived through one of the most tragic events in American history. Several Mt. Holly Sole Patrol senior citizens group members had vivid memories of Kennedy's killing. Robert Buff was 20-years-old in 1963. “I was working at PPG in Shelby and a coworker told me Kennedy had been shot,” Buff said. “I thought he was joking but he said no he was serious. A year later I was in the Air Force and on a train going through Dallas and me and a buddy got off at the station and walked eight or ten blocks to the plaza to see where Kennedy was shot.” David Hostetler was 30-years-old at the time. “I was working in the research lab at Reichold Chemicals,” Hostetler said. “The owners were Catholics and said that when they

Holly in addition to the tree lighting, parade, and visit from Santa at the Municipal Complex. We also want to show people how the garden can be beautiful any time of year.” Last year, over 500 people attended Enchantment at the Garden. Again this year, folks will get to vote on the best display with the winner getting bragging rights. In addition to the myriad of decorations, this year's event will also include live music by Cathy Black, Men of Note, and Jonathan Brackett. There will be a visit from Santa, food trucks including Sylvia's Soul Food, and Two Chicks and a Truck. Catawba Coffee, and Diane's Funnel Cakes will be on
site. Boy Scouts will have a fire pit and hot chocolate. The FUMC preschoolers and third graders from Ida Rankin Elementary will have decorations. There will be cider, cookies, and merrymaking galore. Enchantment in the Garden is free and a family event that will delight everyone. But, wait, there's more going on at the Mt. Holly Community Garden. A brand new, concrete rear entrance ramp makes the garden accessible for everyone. The ramp was built with a $2,619 grant from the Community Foundation of Gaston County. There's also a Little Library box with a variety of reading materials. So, bundle up and get ready for a big dose of down home fun in Mt. Holly. Look for lots more decorated plots like this one at the 3rd Annual Enchantment at the Garden event.

Stowe YMCA honors veterans The Stowe Family YMCA recently hosted a lunch for military veterans. About 20 or so veterans who served in the armed forces from WWII to Iraq, friends, and family members enjoyed the meal and meaningful recognition. Thomason who flew PBY Catalina patrol planes in VPB071 Squadron in the South Pacific during WWII. He also served in the Korean War.
“The time veterans give to the country is the prime of their lives,” he said. “The lunch today is wonderful. We really appreciate things like this.”
closed the day of the funeral. The News reported “streets were quiet and deserted”. Several Mount Holly churches held special services to honor Kennedy. First Methodist Church held a service of Holy Communion on the funeral day. St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church held a Memorial Requiem as well. First Baptist also held a Memorial Service. The Nov. 29, 1963 News also ran a story about a Mount Holly lad in the Air Force, 22-year-old A/2C Mike Howie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry The Stowe Family YMCA hosted and honored veterans last week at a special lunch. About 20 Howie, who was on duty at Andrews Air Base veterans and family members enjoyed the food and the recognition. heard a priest had been with Kennedy in the hospital they knew he was going to die.” Mary Hartness was 18-years-old. “I was sick in the hospital and saw it on TV,” she said. “I saw Ruby shoot Oswald too. It was terrible.” Kathy Holbrook was 12-years-old. “I was at home and also saw it on TV,” she said. “It was an awful thing.” Wanda Vause was a 13-year-old student in McAdenville. “They sent us home from school,” she said. “When I got home we sat around the TV and watched it.” Folks at the East Gaston Adult Day Care Center also reflected on where they were Nov. 22, 1963. “I was 29-years-old,” said Peggy Ballew. “I saw it on TV. I was concerned for Mrs. Kennedy because I had just lost my husband too.” June Culp was 32 years old and living in Racine, Wisconsin on Nov. 22, 1963. “I went to my mother's house These Mt. Photo by Alan Hodge Ann Smith was 28-years-old and working at Belks in Gastonia. “Everyone in the store was talking about it,” she said. “Some people were saying it was a plot.” One might think that the Belmont Banner and Mount Holly News from late November 1963 would have been full of information about Kennedy’s death, but the coverage was rather odd. The Banner dated Nov. 27, 1963 simply had a large photo of Kennedy on the front page with a few lines from John Donne’s poem “For Whom the Bell Tolls” beneath it. There was no mention anywhere of the particulars surrounding his death. The Mount Holly News dated Nov. 29, 1963 did a better job in recording the impact that the assassination and its aftermath had on the local scene. The News reported that American and Efird Mills had stopped operations while the president’s funeral was being broadcast on TV. The firm even provided TV sets in the mill so workers could see the event. Kimberly Yarn Mills and Fieldcrest Mills also ground to a halt while This front page photo and poem exerpt the funeral was being broadcast. God will guide us I enjoy hiking. I search google map for trails. Once I find a trail that is a challenge I load it into map search, and I drive following the leading of my GPS. Rev. Angela Pleasants But, GPS is not always accurate. I was District in the middle of nowhere trying to find Superintendent one trail. GPS said, “turn left.” I looked, of Catawba Valley and there was nothing but woods. GPS Methodist Churches had a road leading into the trails, but when I looked, it was thick woods with nowhere to turn. I turned off GPS and continued searching for the trail. While searching, I begin to think how trusting we are on google maps. We don’t think twice about loading an address into maps and trusting the GPS to get us to the right location. God is ready to guide us in every area of our lives. Do we trust God unconditionally? There are times our GPS will lead us off the path, but God never will. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT. It is interesting how I don’t worry about my GPS ability to guide me. But, when I pray I often worry if God will lead and provide. God is faithful to his promises, and yes he will provide. Even when things are unclear, we ought to trust in the Lord. The writer of Proverbs reminds us God will smooth out our rough paths. The God we serve holds the future and can see where we cannot. Even when we are in the midst of difficulty, we experience God’s guiding hand. “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 NLT. These words were given to Israel in the midst of their judgment. They trusted in their understanding far too long. As a result, they ended up heading in the wrong direction. Israel was to turn to God, seek him with all their heart and he would restore what they lost. We have come a long way from paper travel maps. I am thankful for the GPS system in our cars. I am more thankful for God’s GPS in all of us. God has given us his Spirit that will lead us daily. The Holy Spirit will lead us to deeper truths. He will give us help and guidance in our everyday living. He will sustain us in the midst of a hostile world. “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.” John 16:13 NLT.

Cramerton news briefs
Thank You Jesus! This Thursday we celebrated Thanksgiving Day. At this time, we will gather with family, eat too much, and watch a lot of football. As wonderful as this day is, and it is one of my favorites, there is much more to Thanksgiving than food and fun, this day is about God. While most holidays have become so secularized, Thanksgiving Day holds true to its intent, to thank Rev. Trent Rankin God for His many blessings. ThanksgivSalvation Church ing Day is for thanking God! Gastonia, NC Luke 17:11-19 tells the story of Jesus salvationchurchnc.org and the ten lepers. On His way to Jerusasalvationchurchnc@gmail.com lem, Jesus encounters ten men who were suffering from the dreaded disease, Leprosy. This disease was incurable, and horrific to have. If you had this disease, you could not live near other people, and you had to shout “unclean” if you encountered others. When these men saw Jesus, knowing who His is, they cried out “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” (Luke 17:13, NKJV). Jesus told them to go show themselves to the priest. The priest of the day determined when someone had Leprosy or not. As the men walked away, they noticed they were cured. Their skin was as pure as when they were born. One of the men, a Samaritan, who were usually hated in their day, stopped and shouted praise to Jesus. He came and fell at Jesus’ feet and thanked Him. Jesus asked where the other nine men were, as only the Samaritan offered thanks. He told the man to go, as his faith had made him well. These ten men reflect our views of thanks and gratitude too often. Many times we never stop and give thanks to God for His many blessings. God has given us so much, yet often we never say thank you. The Samaritan was grateful to God, yet the others walked away, never acknowledging the gift of a new life they had been given. We can ultimately never repay all Jesus has done for us. He gave His life for us, in our place, for our sins. We owe Him so much, and we must be thankful to Him. Not only do we need to say thank you, but we need to live grateful lives to God. Our lives should show how thankful we are to God, and reflect His love to others. May we consider what great things God has given us, and develop lives of gratitude. Imagine our world, if people would look less to themselves, and more to the great mercy and grace of God. This week, may we take time out of each day and thank God for what He has done for us. Thank God this week, yet may our thanksgiving be more than the fourth Thursday in November. May thanksgiving be something we do all year. Take time to say “Thank you Jesus!”

The Mountain Island Raptors football team mounted an impressive 4th quarter rally in their playoff games against Robbinsville- it just came too late. MI just could not overcome a poor first-half performance. However, in a game that showed how much character Mountain Island has the Raptors battled to the end in a 46- 34 loss to the Robbinsville Black Knights. Robbinsville came out strong scoring 32 first-half points. The strength of the Robbinsville team was apparent. With the Raptors facing a 32-6 deficit at halftime things were looking bleak. Instead of giving up, coach Robert Washington decided to rally the troops. “At halftime I challenged them,” Washington said. “They responded.” Washington challenged the team’s sense of pride. The coach didn’t want to see his team face a smack down on their home field. “I told them not to allow them to do this to you on your home field,” Washington stated. It took a while but the pep talk paid off. In the third quarter both teams traded touchdowns. The Raptors stopped the hemorrhaging. They settled down and went to work. In the fourth quarter Robbinsville scored on a 16-yard run. After that the Raptors came alive scoring 20 unanswered fourth quarter points. The comeback was led by Elijah Burris and Kyle
Holcomb. Burris scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns and Holcomb hit CJ Stephens on a 56-yard touchdown strike as time was running out. Sadly it was a case of too little, too late. The final was 46-34. A tough loss, but by no means a smack down. This was a battle of two teams built differently. The contrast was obvious when you break down the stats. Both teams had high offensive output. The Black Knights had 451 yards of total offense. The Raptors had 436. It’s where each team got their production is what’s telling. Robbinsville had 424 yards on the ground compared to Mountain Islands 107. On the other hand, Mountain Island had 329 yards passing offense compared to 27 for the Black Knights. In this case strength overcame finesse. That fact was something that coach Washington will not overlook. “We have to hit the weight room,” Washington added. The 2017 season saw the Raptors finish with an 8-4 record. In only their 3rd year of existence the team has made its mark. On to the future. This year is over, but the Raptors have a lot to look forward to next year. They are only losing four senior starters. Two on defense and two on offense. This should be a quick reload. “I’m proud of this team,” Washington said. “I have no doubt that they will take the off season seriously and come back strong. We have 15 to 17 junior starters returning.”

Cramer falls to Charlotte Catholic in 2nd round By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
Stuart Cramer’s football playoff run ended on Friday night in a disappointing 42-7 loss to Charlotte Catholic. With that said, 2017 was a good year for the Storm. Cramer finished the year 8-5 and made it to the second round of the playoffs. Battling Catholic was rough for Cramer. The Cougars took the field with a very wellrounded offense and a defense capable of stopping just about anyone. Right from the beginning it looked like Cramer was going to have a long night. The Cougars jumped out on top early and never let up. At the half Cramer was down 28-0. In the second half the Cougars picked up where they left off in the first. Catholic scored another 14 points in the third quarter to put the score at 42-0. Cramer finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when Kaiser Kayton crashed into the end zone on a 6-yard run. The season ended with the score set at 42-7. This was one tough Charlotte Catholic team. See CRAMER Page 13

“Catholic was about the best team we played all year,” Cramer head coach Ben McMillan said. “A very good football team.” To lose to such a good team is nothing to be ashamed of. The Catholic program is impressive. It’s likely the Cougars are going to make a deep playoff run. “I told our guys after the game we may see them win the state championship,” McMillan said of Catholic. “It was nothing to hang our heads over.” Any loss is tough, but coach McMillan has a lot to be proud of. In just a few years the staff and players at Cramer built a solid program from the ground up. Cramer’s graduating seniors have done a lot to put Storm football on the map. “This group of seniors have come a long

way from winning one game their freshman year,” McMillan added. That is very true. Today, Cramer is a legitimate contender in a very tough Big South Conference. Seniors like Robert Truesdale, Dylan Collins, Jaylin Rocquemore, Adam Hannibal and others have done a lot for their team. Going 8-5 and making it to the 2nd round of the playoffs are all firsts for Cramer football. Now it’s time to reflect and think about next year. The Storm will need to do some off season adjusting but should be in pretty good shape. “We’re losing nine starters,” McMillan said. “Most on defense. We have some spots to fill. I think we can keep on improving. We’re bringing back a lot on offense.” 2017 was a good year for Cramer. With a little bit of hard work 2018 could be just as good, or better.

Belmont Central Elementary School has named its Do the Right Thing winners Lilly Floyd (right), and Leah Koehler. Lilly led the community for over two years in raising money needed to add swings to the 2nd and 3rd grade playground. She organized several school fundraisers and events in the town. Lilly was featured in the Gaston County Schools website for her kind deed. The entire school celebrated her with a dedication ceremony. Lilly saw a need and worked to be the change she wanted to see. Within two years, she raised $11,000. Lilly is a visionary leader. She has gone above and beyond to help her school and community. Leah has been a great friend and helper with a new student in the classroom. She has worked with her to help her learn the daily routine, word study words, participation, and reading procedures. The new student recently moved to the United States and is still becoming proficient in English. Leah has gone out of her way to welcome her and make her transition smooth. Other nominations include: David Loyd, Gabriel Paredes, Grace Maynard, Lane Lineberger, Merritt McCotter. Gaston Schools photo

Shelby tops South Point 33-23 By John Wilson john.bannernews@gamil.com
A few weeks ago South Point football squad dominated the Shelby Golden Lions on their way to an undefeated regular season and first ever Southwestern 2A Conference crown. When the the Golden Lions came back to town in the second round of the NCHSAA 2A playoffs they were looking for revenge. In a game that pitted two of the best 2A teams in the state Shelby got what they came for with a big 33-23 win over the Red Raiders. South Point got on the board first when Jake Alexander scored on a 2-yard run. In the second quarter Shelby bounced back scoring twice. The Red Raiders responded to the Shelby challenge when Cade Ratliff hit a 23-yard field goal as time was running out in the half. Shelby went into the locker room at halftime with a 13- 10 lead. In the 3rd quarter South Point jumped out to a 20-13 lead when Scottie Lee hooked up with Keaton Hale on a 72yard bomb. This game was shaping up to be a nail biter. In the fourth quarter things got dicey as both teams traded shots. Initially the Red Raiders were going toe to toe with Shelby. Shelby scored and South Point answered. Shelby scored yet again and as South Point was set to respond things went haywire. A botched kickoff return gave the Golden Lions a short field which they quickly capitalized on with a touchdown. That TD knocked the wind
out of the Red Raiders sail. It was one of those mistakes that happen. Unfortunately it was one the Red Raiders just couldn’t overcome. Not long after the short field score Shelby added another. It was over. A heart breaking 33-23 loss. “Both teams played their guts out,” Red Raider head coach Adam Hodge said. “Both were good teams. The game was a lot closer than the score.” In game with such evenly matched teams the outcome may be determined by turnovers or miscues. That was the case here. “Both teams made mistakes,” Hodge said. “We made just a few more than they did.” Hodge was right about how close the game was. The Golden Lions had 367 yards of total offense. The Red Raiders had 310. The Shelby passing game was more effective than South Point’s. On the other hand the South Point ground game was more effective the Shelby’s. South Point had one heck of a run. Sometimes things just don’t work out the way you think they will. That doesn’t mean that the Red Raiders didn’t have a good year. “It didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but we won 12 football games,” Hodge added. We didn’t win the state championship, but we won the conference. We were undefeated in the regular season. You can’t always get what you want. Our kids played hard. They worked really hard.” Next year will be an interesting year for the Red
Raiders. The 2017 team was loaded with seniors. South Point will be losing a number of starters. When it comes to exactly how many will need to be replaced coach Hodge candidly said, “A bunch.” If history is any guide the losses will be tough to replace, but the task will not be insurmountable. South Point seems to find a way to put a competitive team on the field year in and year out.

5th Grader starts ‘Gloves for Gaston’ to benefit homeless Colin Drumm is a 5th grader at Belmont Central Elementary. When he was voted to be the class representative for student council it got him thinking about ways he could give back to the community. Without any prompting and very little help from his family he came up with his idea to start a glove and sock drive to help the homeless of the Gaston County area. The name of the drive is Gloves for Gaston, In partnership with hands and feet Collin Drumm foundation. To promote his glove drive he began wacky sock Wednesday at the school each Wednesday through December 1. Where each class votes on one student who has the wackiest socks then Colin picks from them to win a cool prize. So far, Gloves forGaston has collected 274 pairs of socks and 86 pairs of gloves. Please consider donating gloves and socks inside the lobby of the school. Thank you so much for helping impact the lives of many in our community. Kim Drumm photo
