American Heritage Girl Chloe Billings ramrods community garden in Stanley By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Seventeen year old Chloe Billings of Stanley is a nice, quiet girl, but her recent American Heritage Girl project of creating a community garden showed she could take command of a major project and see it through to success. First, what exactly is the American Heritage Girl group? According to the website americanheritagegirls. org, American Heritage Girls (AHG) was founded by a group of parents wanting a faith-based, scout-type character development program for their daughters in 1995. The AHG Program is dedicated to the mission of building women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country. AHG girls across the nation and the globe par-
ticipate in badge programs, service projects, leadership opportunities, and outdoor experiences, all with an emphasis on Christian values and family involvement. The group Billings is a part of is based at First Presbyterian Church in Stanley. She has been an American Heritage Girl since 2011 and was one of the local chapter’s original members. “We do crafts, history, science, hiking, and camping,” Chloe said. “There are about 50 girls in our troop.” A rising senior at East Gaston High, Chloe is at the AHG’s “Patriots” level and has a sash full of service stars and merit type badges. The garden is her “Stars and Stripes” project. The Stars and Stripes Award is the AHG’s highest See GARDEN, Page 3
