Mt. Holly honors Danny Jackson on his retirement

“Tonight, we honor a great man.”

That’s what Mt. Holly mayor Bryan Hough said last Monday night during a series of events honoring former city manager Danny Jackson upon his retirement after 30 years as a loyal and dedicated

municipal employee.

Surprise was the theme of the evening. Jackson showed up at the Municipal Center to find a lavish spread of snacks and refreshments and a horde of family, friends, and colleagues waiting in the conference room. He was totally taken off guard.

“I am shocked,” Jackson said. “I can feel the love in

this room.”

Things got even better when, just prior to the 7pm council meeting, mayor Bryan Hough skillfully guided Jackson and the crowd out into the Municipal Center’s Grand Hall where a large sheet covered a portion of the wall. Once everyone was in place, a string was pulled, the sheet fell, and there, in large letters, was the new name- “Danny J. Jackson Grand Hall”. Jackson was floored again.

When handed a micro-

phone to say a few words, he understandably became somewhat emotional.

“Normally I am not speechless but I am really honored and touched,” he said. “I am blessed and want to give honor to God for the role he has played in my life.”

Once the council meeting began, Jackson received yet another honor, a proclamation from the City recognizing him for his three decades of loyal service to Mt. Holly’s citizenry.

June 19, 2021 was a hot, but historic day. It was one to celebrate Juneteenth as the country’s newest federal holiday. It was also the 10th anniversary of the Belmont Juneteenth Celebration.

R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS Books and kids The other day I got a press release from Gaston County Schools about a special reading program and how much the kids loved it.

This set me to thinking about the importance of books and reading in the lives of kids and how the abundance or lack of it can have a profound impact on young lives and how they turn out.

My own love of the written word began with those little things called “golden books”.

They had a gold-colored spine and inside were pages filled with stories and pictures about all sorts of stuff. The glue that held the books together was pretty tasty too as I enjoyed teething on them or so I am told.

Next came the Dick and Jane books in school. How many of you can name the dog in those books, or the cat? Spot and Puff were the names in case you didn’t know.

When I was in elementary school we went to what’s called the media center today and got to check out books. My favorites were biographies of people like Robert E. Lee and Winston Churchill. I liked anything to do with history but shunned mystery books as I lacked the patience to read the whole thing to find out who done it.

For a spell when I was a kid we lived near the East Branch library off Central Avenue in Charlotte. It had central air conditioning when most homes did not and I would go there in summer to sit in the cool oasis and look at books.

By and by when I was about 12-years-old my great aunt Louise Smith Surratt got me a subscription to National Geographic magazine and my little world suddenly expanded.

Many hours I sat down with eyes riveted on those yellow-bound pages. My favorite articles and photos dealt with ancient Egypt. I still have a fascination with that culture and time period and once spent a whole day at the British Museum looking at mummy after mummy and statue after statue and pondered what it must have been like to have been a pharaoh and if you wanted to you stand on the steps of your palace and tell everyone to kiss your foot and they would have to do it.

Another National Geographic favorite topic was mine were natives from places like Borneo or the South Pacific islands. Once I saw picture of a Borneo chap with a ball point pin in his noise crossways. Another photo showed some of his pals jumping off a huge homemade scaffold with nothing but some vines around their ankles keeping them from shining the ground below with their faces. Yet another National Geographic pic that sticks in my mind was that of a native girl from Polynesia propped up in the doorway of her hut eating a yam and wearing a big ol’ smile and fluffy grass skirt and

that was it.

Besides the National Geographic, another influence on my early brain development was the set of Colliers encyclopedias my mom went in debt for. Having a short at- Alan Hodge tention span (still do), Banner-News Editor meant I could not sit down and start at “A” and work my way to “Z” but I read most of the set by flipping along until I saw something interesting and stopping there to read all about it.

Overall, I recall devouring everything to read I could get my hands on. This included my mom’s movie magazines like Modern Screen with ads by June Wilkinson and Fredricks of Hollywood and Boy’s Life and Popular Mechanics that showed you how to fish and fix lawn mowers.

As my school days progressed through the years I eventually became interested in the works of Lake District poets such as Coleridge and Wordsworth, Beatnik poets like Gregory Corso, anything by Papa Hemingway, and nonfiction by the tons on any and all subjects.

Anyway, I am convinced that reading at an early age and being exposed to an eclectic blend of material in print formed my love of the written word and led me to my work in journalism, for better or worse!

Anyway again, what I am saying is that too many kids today have little to no exposure to books and reading. Maybe computers get part of the blame. You can certainly read a book online but it’s just not the same as actually holding it in your hands and feeling the paper and when you are done reading putting a nice marker at that page and putting the book away with lots of others on a shelf.

I know parents are busy these days and working and running around driving the kids to whatever game or lesson happens to be on the menu for that day and then cooking some food and getting stuff lined up for the next round, and so actually sitting down with the offspring to read together gets put on the back burner but in my humble opinion it would be nice if a slice of the day could be set aside a couple of times each week for some in-house non-electronic intellectual stimulation.

In the meantime, the story tellers at our local libraries are helping out as best they can planting seeds of knowledge and hopefully a love of books and reading into as many little bodies and minds as care to come to the free programs they offer which is about as valuable a service as can be found anywhere at any price.

“The Star-Spangled Banner” followed by three Early American Hymns. Mary will play a song of the old West, a Scott Joplin “Rag,” and a hymn known as the Black National Anthem. They will play several patriotic duets, including An Armed Forces Tribute and the stirring Na-

tional March of the United States of America, “Stars and Stripes Forever!”

This 50 minute program begins at 6:00 PM, rain or shine. You are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on the church lawn or remain in your car in the parking lot.

By Dennnis Siracusa Roots are everywhere; tree roots, sarsaparilla roots for making old timey root beer, and our roots; our genealogical, emotional and spiritual ones. We pursue them for many intriguing reasons.

Sometimes because we’re curious about lineage, sometimes we need medical backgrounds and sometimes they involve solving a mystery. I had one of those this morning; the yellow rose mystery.

My Daughter-in-law has a beautiful yellow rose by their sunroom. This spring, for a heretofore unexplained reason, it popped up Red; are we seeing REVERSION; a change to a previous state?

Roses are often scientific hybrids. We supposedly do that to generate healthier and more diverse plants but hybrids are sterile so they hitchhike on heirloom plants. This rose started out as a healthy red root stock; probably a Dr. Huey Red Rose root stock that had a sterile hybrid yellow HT engrafted into it. For a time, the yellow rose did fine; or appeared to but eventually it died all the way down through “its root system” BUT not through the original heirloom root system. Once the sterile yellow rose was completely dead, the heirloom root system took over and produced its beautiful red roses. How are we similar?

In Genesis 1:27 NIV God’s Word reminds us of our beginnings. “So God created mankind in his own image” and in verse 31 “God saw all that he made, and it was very good.” But something terrible happened. In Genesis 3:2 God told Adam and Eve “you must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.” Well they not only touched it but ate from it and when they did a distorted root system was engrafted into them and began immediately producing sinful fruit which continues down to all of us today. Thanks to our Savior Jesus Christ, however, we can revert back to our original root stock. First we have reach out to Jesus as Lord and be washed clean of our

sin penalty by His sacrificial blood; John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” At that point, our eternal heavenly destination is secure but now we enter the arduous process of sanctification where our sinful Adamic root system is systematically pried loose by our right choices and the Lord’s help so we can lead a prosperous life here and fulfill God’s original blueprint for us.

Reversion has a compelling legal definition; “the right, especially of the original owner to possess or succeed to property on the death

of the p r e s ent possessor.”

That’s w h a t happens Dennis Siracusa in salvation and sanctification. Jesus Christ, the heir to our creation and our salvation, redeems us and helps us choose to turn from sins and revert back to our original heirloom state built in His image. How??

Simply call out to Him for His help. The choice is ours; continue living sterile sin engrafted hybrid lives, or revert to our royal created state and live victoriously here and with the Lord for eternity.

Each year this donor-funded program has grown to include new locations and volunteers all focused on serving youth meals who rely on free or reduced meals during the school year.

During the COVID closure of 2020 the Y served from March - August expanding to include locations in Mt. Holly, Belmont, Stanley, and Gastonia serving both youth and seniors the Y was able to serve 33,701 meals.

2021 meal service began Monday, June 7 and during the first week YMCA crews were able to serve 261 meals at four locations. Salos estimates he and his volunteers deliver about 40 lunches per

day. Sometimes the demand is greater.

“One day we gave out 50 lunches and had to go back and get more,” he said.

The lunches are prepared

by Gaston Schools cafeterias and meets those nutritional standards. A sample lunch might include chicken nuggets, milk, apple sauce, mashed potatoes, and a roll.

YMCA buses pick the lunches up at their assigned school and fan out to the delivery area.

“We continue to work closely with Gaston County School Nutrition who assist in identifying areas of need

and by providing balanced meals,” said YMCA director of advancement Molly D’Avria.

The kids seem to really enjoy the food.

“It’s great!” said lunch participant “Kerre”.

The YMCA is constantly looking for volunteers to help serve. Reach out to Kelly Davis at kdavis@gastonymca. org or fill out the volunteer form online.

Those folks already volunteering get a deep sense of

satisfaction from pitching in.

“The kids get excited when they see us,” said volunteer Kristen Caskey. “It is awesome to see them come running to the bus.”

Another volunteer, Linda Joiner, agreed.

“The kids need and deserve this service,” she said.

The YMCA is also are fundraising to ensure this work continues. Donations made to the summer lunch program directly impacts youth meals in Eastern Gaston County.

The proclamation wrapped up with these wordsNOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT we the Mayor and City Council of Mount Holly find this retirement to be bittersweet, for although we would like to keep Danny as the City Manager for years to come, we recognize that he is well deserving of a long and enjoyable retirement in which he will have time to focus his attention on family and other pursuits of his choosing; and so we extend our deep appreciation to Danny J. Jackson for a job well done and for his many years of dedicated service to Mount Holly.

Jackson’s career with the City of Mt. Holly was a long one and full of achievement.

Jackson has held the post of city manager since 2010, but started his career back in 1987 with the parks and recreation department.

“I was working in the private sector at the time and one day was playing basketball with a friend who worked for the City of Mt. Holly,” Jackson said. “It wasn’t planned, but I heard about a job opportunity in parks and recreation and I grabbed it.”

Jackson, who is an Appalachian State grad with a degree in Business Management, worked that position for three years, then in 1990 he transferred to the planning department as a code enforcement officer. In 1995 he was promoted to planning director.

In 2003 he became assistant city manager and in 2010 the

city council named him city manager.

In addition to his city duties, Jackson managed to find time for other civic involvements including the United Way, serving on the Mt. Holly Community Relief Organization Board, the Gaston County Land Use Planning Committee, and the Gaston Outside Image Campaign Committee.

That prestigious award is the highest that the State of North Carolina gives to people who have made significant contributions to their communities, in their profession, and to the state.

Now that he’s retired, Jackson mused on what he plans to do with his time. As expected, it includes service.

“I am going to relax and gather myself,” he said. “I still plan to be a positive influence in the city especially to youth.

I still want to make a difference and influence people.”

This past Sunday we celebrated Father’s Day. It was a great day to honor our fathers, both living and past. One of the greatest blessings of my life is to be a father to my four children. Being a father is awesome, but it is a calling of great responsibility as well. We need strong fathers today in our world. Our children need fathers who love them, and care for them, while preparing them for their future.

Solomon, one of the wisest people ever to live, wrote many proverbs in his life. These sayings are great advice for people to live by.

One of his most familiar proverbs is Proverbs 22:6, which says “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it” (NKJV). This proverb is such great advice for fathers. As fathers, there are many ways in which we can prepare our kids.

One of the biggest things we can do is to be there for them. In our busy world, it can be easy, because of work and other obligations, to find little free time. However, our kids need us, and our attention. Whether it is watching them play ball, seeing them dance, or just making conversation, our children need us.

One of the greatest things we can do is to teach our children to love God. There is no

greater gift we will ever give our children, than Jesus Christ. As fathers, we can show our kids just how much we love God by worshipping in church with them. Teach them Rev. Trent Rankin also the importance of God’s Word, the Bible. Pray with your kids, not just a quick blessing before dinner. May we always show our children just how much we love Jesus, and how important He is to our lives.

As Solomon wrote so long ago, we are to train our children in the way they should go.

The greatest disservice we can ever do to our kids is to send them out into this world unprepared. Our world is chaotic, violent, and so many are far from God. We also have an enemy, Satan, who wants to destroy our families, and our children. As fathers, we need to prepare our children for the world they will enter. May we always teach our kids those things so much of today’s world lacks, such as morality, character, and goodness. Most of all, we must show our children love. Love them unconditionally, and always. Let them know they are loved, and that most of all Jesus loves them. Dads, our kids need us.

Each father is so important, and so needed.

How to battle those pesky garden bugs Garden pests, such as insects, mites, slugs and snails, can do tremendous damage to your vegetables, and there is nothing worse than losing your harvest to these hungry pests. Keep your garden lush and delicious by catching and controlling the problem early. Here’s how.

Find Out Which Pests You Have- When it comes to their favorite snacks, garden pests aren’t stupid. They love soft, succulent plants and vegetables as much as you do. To find the most effective course of action, it helps to know what’s feeding in your garden. Many different garden pests can cause similar damage to your vegetable plants. Some pests are very selective of the plants they feed on, while others will feed on just about anything in your garden. Most garden bugs actively eat during the day, but there are a few, like cutworms, snails and slugs, that prefer to do their damage at night.

The Veggies They Prefer- Some garden pests such as aphids, flea beetles, and leaf miners can be found on a wide array of plants in your vegetable garden. However, there are other garden pests that prefer specific families of vegetables, but they will also occasionally feast on other plants in your garden.

Tomato Family The potato beetle and tomato hornworm can be found feasting on members of the tomato family: tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and potatoes.

Cabbage Family Cabbage loopers prefer brassicas, better known as members of the cabbage family: cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and Brussels sprouts.

Cucumber Family Several garden pests, including cucumber beetles, squash bugs, and squash

vine borers, can be found on plants in the cucumber family: cucumbers, melons, squashes, and pumpkins.

How to Kill Garden PestsThere are multiple products labeled to kill pests in your vegetable garden. Always check the label before applying to find the insects controlled, the vegetables the product can be applied to, and how long you need to wait to harvest after application.

How to Prevent Future Damage- Encourage beneficial insects and spiders. Not all bugs are bad. Some insects and spiders help keep pest populations in check which helps you maintain a healthy balance in your garden. Spiders can eat unwanted garden insect pests, some insect eggs, and small caterpillars.

Ladybugs prey on aphids, mites, whiteflies, some insect eggs, and small caterpillars.

Ground beetles and praying mantises are also considered beneficial because they feed

on other insects as well as other invertebrates. Parasitic wasps, on the other hand, will use tomato hornworms and other caterpillars as a place to lay their eggs and feed their young once the eggs hatch. To encourage beneficial insects to populate your garden, plant herbs that attract them. Ladybugs, for example, are attracted to dill.

Caraway, fennel and spearmint draw in minute pirate bugs and damsel bugs which

also feed on other insects.

Use physical barriers- A useful method for keeping garden pests off your vegetables is to put a barrier between the pest and your plants. Placing a copper ring around the base of plants will help deter slugs and snails.

A floating row cover (lightweight fabric) either laid on the plants or held up by wire hoops can be used to keep insects like cabbage loopers, bean beetles, cucumber bee-

tles, and squash vine borers off your plants. Just remember to remove the cover when your plants start to flower so they can be pollinated. (The cover can be placed back over the plants once pollination is done.)

Keep your plants healthyWhen plants are happy and not stressed, they are able to tolerate garden pests better. Remember to water your plants regularly and fertilize them as needed.

Gaston Braves begin play in 2021

By Colby Conrad The G-Braves started strong in an opening game victory by defeating Queen City by a 10-2 score.

Queen City scored a single tally in the opening inning. The Braves answered with a three spot in the sixth inning and added seven additional runs in the seventh in this opening game romp. The G-Braves totaled ten bingles in the opening win. Logan Agusta, Caleb Burr and Drew Wofford collected multiple hits to lend the Braves to the win. Ethan Simmons tossed the first four innings to pick up the win. Keelan Helms and Parker Agusta entered the game out of the bull pen and closed out the game in

relief.

Game Two resulted In a loss to Gastonia.

The Braves traveled to Sims Legion Park in Gastonia to face Post 23 last Friday. The G-Braves started strong by scoring three runs in the first inning. However, this was all the Braves could muster in losing 6-3.

The Braves lost despite outhitting Gastonia five to three. The game was knotted at three runs apiece when a costly error by the Braves led to a big inning by Gastonia in the fifth inning. Leading hitter for the Braves was Daniel McClellan with two hits.

Parker Agosta was the starting pitcher for the Braves but had control prob-

lems in hurling only one and one third innings. Ethan Simmons, Cameron Cook, Nolan Hargett and Greyson Thomas all pitched in relief.

A new skipper is in place for the ‘21 season. Tim Brown, a pitching star at South Point will lead the Braves this year. Brown later excelled on the mound for Brevard College and finished up his career at UNC-Wilmington in 1997.

He will be assisted by Zack Bumgardner who is a coach at East Gaston. Mark King will take over the duties as athletic director for Posts 144-266, he succeeds Jeff Gibson who did a remarkable job as AD for the Braves for many years.

Belmont Parks and Rec. trailer making the rounds The Belmont Parks and Recreation Dept,. is going mo-bile with a new program that will see staff members traveling out into parks and neighborhoods with a trailer full of fun.

The idea revolves around the concept of loading a former Belmont PD enclosed trailer with a wide variety of recreational activity equipment, and pulling it to parks and neighborhoods, and letting the kids there avail themselves of the stuff for free.

The activities will include spikeball, ladderball, basketball, badminton, dodgeball, twister, soccer, cornhole, checkers, chess, waterpark at Stowe Park, fishing and paddleboats at Loftin Riverfront Park, and tumbling mats to name a few.

Academy Sports donated a lot of the equipment and supplies for the programming.

Parks and Rec director Zip Stowe says the idea was hatched after he talked to some parents.

“I was at Davis Park and

some of the moms were talking about ways to take recreation to the people,” Stowe said. “This new program will be a great way to see that happen.”

Parks and Rec. employee Alex Godette will be one of the staff involved in getting the equipment out there.

“This will be a great opportunity to go to all areas of Belmont and give the community more recreational choice,” he said.

Stowe says that in addition to Parks and Rec. employees, he’s also looking for volunteers to help with the program. Call him at 704901-2069 to find out about volunteering.

A schedule of places the trailer will go and activities it will provide has been drawn up.
