Belmont Trolley project making progress By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Good things come to those who are patient. At least that’s what seems to be the message regarding the long-awaited Belmont Trolley project. The trolley first arrived in Belmont in early October, 2015 after many, many months of planning, financial figuring, a 3,000 mile journey, and lots of crossed fingers. The 1913 trolley was trucked from a museum in British Columbia to Belmont. Belmont Trolley, Inc. had raised $25,000 and bought the J.G. Brill streetcar, a 1913 model made in Philadephia, from Fraser Valley Histori-
cal Railway Society in Surrey, Canada. It took another $16,000 to pay Admiral Merchants Motor Freight to wrap the trolley in plastic similar to that used to protect expensive boats and cars during transit and make the journey. Upon arriving in town, the trolley was put in the City of Belmont Public Works building where it remains. A trolley needs tracks to run on and so trolley supporters soon began working with the NCDOT and the City of Belmont to freshen up the spur line that runs from downtown Belmont to the Belmont Abbey campus. The planned Belmont greenway walking path will be
parallel with the tracks and that had to be taken into consideration as well. Deals with owners of property adjacent to the tracks and greenway had to be struck. All of this has taken time but progress has been made. “The design phase for the greenway is complete,” said Belmont Trolley, Inc. secretary Nate Wells. A trolley needs a station/ car barn and the aforementioned trolley folks got busy having plans drawn up for a structure that will be situated behind the former Belmont Federal Savings and Loan office on Catawba St. “We are negotiating an encroachment agreement See TROLLEY, Page 4
Cramerton Parks and Rec. ready for warm weather fun and games By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Warm weather has finally arrived and the Cramerton Parks and Rec. Dept. has plenty of great events planned to celebrate spring and summer. Parks and Rec. special events and programs supervisor Eunice McSwain is so excited about about what’s in store she can scarcely contain herself. “Cramerton truly is such a special place and I can’t wait to share what we have to offer with everyone!” McSwain said. “The Goat Island Games are right around the corner and it’s one of our most popular events. From live music all the way to kid friendly bubble stations we have you covered. This event will be perfect for the whole family to enjoy a fun filled day outside. Cramerton is such a hidden gem and with
