Mt. Holly’s new Public Works facility nearly done By Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
The new $4.1 million City of Mt. Holly Public Works facility project at 218 Adrian St. is rapidly approaching completion. The project was approved by the city council on March 27, 2017 and work began on May 30, 2017. The eight acre site and several existing Adrian Mill buildings already there was bought from A&E for $541K. Work on the project is being done by Charlotte-based Miles McClellan Construction- the same firm doing the new MHFD North Station. Milligan Architecture, Inc. is the designer. A tour of the site last week revealed a story of hard work and good progress despite somewhat trying recent meteorological conditions- in other words cold and snow. Nonetheless. “The biggest challenge has been the weather,” says site manager Allen Bodle. “We hope to be finished sometime in March, weather permitting.” The crown jewel of the job is the new $2.6 million, 8K sq. ft., administrative building. Built of brick with plenty of large windows to give its interior a light and airy ambiance, the structure's interior is in the final stages of completion. “The administrative building offices will house several departments including streets and solid waste, utilities, building maintenance, and parks and recreation,” said Mt. Holly assistant city manager Miles Braswell. “Everyone will leave the Massey Building and city council will determine its future use.” Besides offices, the administrative building will also house city documents in a fire-rated room, has a nice employee lounge, conference room, See PUBLIC WORKS FACILITY page 2

Davis Park gets a facelift By Alan Hodge
Second in a series of four stories remembering influential and pioneering African-American citizens from our area. By Alan Hodge
alan.bannernews@gmail.com
One of Belmont's oldest and most popular recreational facilities, Davis Park, recently received a major facelift and refitting thanks to a collaborative effort between the City of Belmont and Duke Energy. Last Wednesday saw the park re-dedicated with a ribbon cutting ceremony and speeches that brought out a variety of city officials as well as Duke Energy representatives. Davis Park dates back to 1963 and is nestled in the neighborhood next to American Legion Post 144 and First Baptist Church. The park has a playground area and a baseball field across the street. Time had played heck with the place, especially the playground equipment which was old and in disrepair. The city decided that due to general wear and tear, as well as vandalism to the slides, Davis Park was long overdue for some love and so the Parks and Rec.

The late Miss Elsie Grier was one of Belmont's most pioneering, persevering, and personable African-American women. Grier (1917-2010), was born in Gaston County and graduated from Reid High, the school where local African-American students went. She also attended Barber Scotia College and Johnson C. Smith University where she graduated Elsie Grier Cum Laude. She pursued graduate studies at Columbia University, New York, and studied Media/Library Science at Appalachian State University. Grier's 30-year career included time as a teacher, librarian, and basketball coach. Known as “Miss Elsie”, Grier was also a dedicated public servant. She served on the Belmont City Council from 1985 to 1997. She was also mayor Pro Tem for four years and is remembered as a visionary who cared for all citizens. Grier advocated for Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday to be a paid holiday for full-time City of Belmont employees and it was approved on August 2, 1992. Grier was also active See ELSIE GRIER page 2
