October is Pet Obesity Awareness Month… would you know if your pet was overweight? by Rachael Parkin

owadays our pets are very much a part of our family. Long gone are the days when they were simply used for thins like pest-control or extra security. They have transitioned from kennel to couch and in doing so; we have invited them into every aspect of our lives, including our kitchens. We are all guilty of sharing the odd morsel here and there, mostly as a sign of affection. However, when we reach a point where this implicates our pet’s quality of life – can we really call it love? It is our responsibility, after all, to give our animals the best quality of life we can. So perhaps it’s time that we love them a little better. Pet obesity is dramatically on the rise, with over 65% of dogs and 39% of cats in the UK classed as overweight or obese. It’s not surprising really, seeing as only 37% of pet owners know how to accurately check their pet’s weight!

Pet obesity brings with it a range of illnesses such as arthritis and diabetes, as well as putting strain on internal organs like the heart. It has proven to have an impact on life expectancy with statistics showing that overweight dogs can pass away up to 3 years earlier than a healthy animal, due to complications of being overweight. Surely this is not something we would want for our beloved companions. CHANGING YOUR MINDSET It may seem a scary prospect if your pet is overweight, but we owe it to them to try and give them the best chance of a long and healthy life. What we have to understand is that this isn’t going to be a crash diet – we are talking about changing the lifestyle and feeding habits of your pet’s, and ourselves, long-term. Firstly, make sure you are feeding your pet an appropriate diet for their age, size and breed. What may be appropriate for an adult Chihuahua may not be sufficient for a young German Shepherd for example. Puppies can be more sensitive, much like children, so keeping their diet consistent is crucial to helping them grow and develop into healthy, well-rounded adults. Most branded pet foods come with a feeding guide informing you of the daily intake necessary for your pet to thrive. Remember, this does not include and additional treats or snacks, so make sure you take those into account when working out your pet’s daily allowance. Next we need to talk about begging behaviours. We all know that look they give us when they want something.

Try to remember that this doesn’t necessarily mean they are hungry or that they are begging for food. Most of our pets simply just want our love and attention. Instead of jumping to the treats jar, try meeting their emotional needs – play a game, take them out for a walk or, even if it is dinnertime, try a puzzle feeder to get them moving and thinking more. Not only does this save on the added calories, but it’s a great bonding experience for you and your pet too! Pets can get bored just as easily as humans, so try a set aside just 30 minutes of your day to spend with your pet outside of their normal daily routine.

TALK TO YOUR VET Most veterinary practices will offer designated weight clinics with a qualified veterinary nurse, quite often free of charge. As a practice, we can give you advice and tips on what to feed, how much and how often as well as making sure your pet is getting enough exercise. Remember, we are here to help. We are happy to support you throughout your pet’s weight loss process and give advice and encouragement whenever it’s needed – whether that’s for yourself or your pet. We care for your pets as much as you do and if we can make even a small difference to their quality of life, it’s always worth it. Credit to: petobesity.co.uk

Diary for October

• There is still time to plant daffodil and other spring flowering bulbs to give an early splash of colour next year. • If your pots and containers are looking past their best refresh them with some autumn bedding • October is a great month for planting new hedging • Prune climbing and rambling Roses and tie in the stems to prevent wind damage over the next few months • Keep on top of clearing leaves. This will help to prevent diseases like black spot on Roses and dead patches on lawns • Harvest Apples and Pears. You can tell when they are ready by lifting them in the palm of your hand, a slight twist and a gentle pull and they should come away easily • Any diseased fruit should be removed from the tree and the ground to help prevent disease next year • Wrap glue bands

around the trunks of Apple trees to trap winter moth females whose caterpillars shred the spring blossom • Remove any greenhouse shading to allow maximum light in for the plants you have in it • Try to give the lawn a final mow, trim the edges and a light rake to ease the thatch from the surface. • New turf can still be laid before the first frost as autumn rain will help to settle the turf in • Collect up fallen leaves and compost in a leaf bin to create leaf mulch. Leaf mulch is a great soil conditioner • The bare root season is nearly here, normally mid-November to midMarch so it is worth planning any new Fruit Trees or Bushes and Ornamental Trees • Wrap glue bands around the trunks of Apple trees to trap winter moth females whose caterpillars shred the spring blossom

Official fuel consumption WLTP for the ŠKODA range in mpg (litres/100km): Combined 58.9 (4.8) to 30.7 (9.2). NEDC equivalent CO2 combined emissions for the ŠKODA range are 167 to 96 g/km. Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO2 figures with other vehicles tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. There is a new test used for fuel consumption and CO2 figures (known as WLTP). The CO2 figures shown however, are based on a calculation designed to be equivalent to the outgoing (NEDC) test cycle and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration. For more information, please see www.skoda.co.uk/owners/wltp-info or consult your retailer. Data correct at July 2019. Figures quoted are for a range of configurations (including non-UK) and are subject to change due to ongoing approvals/changes. Please contact your retailer for further information.

was delighted to sit in on a monthly ‘team talk’ of RCHT staff and had the pleasure of handing out certificates to staff nominated for the NHS Parliamentary Awards. These are prestigious annual awards, judged by senior NHS clinicians as well as the head of NHS England, Simon Stevens. Linzi Lancaster and her team were SW regional winners and I was pleased to learn more about their important work while I was at Treliske. It is always a pleasure to recognise the brilliant staff in our local NHS. It was good to hear the really positive feedback from staff following this week’s news of a major investment of just under £100 million pounds into new facilities at Treliske. This, I was told, was the largest single investment in the hospital since it was built. This new funding will enable the building of a new Women and Children’s hospital as well as creating a new entrance. It follows the good news in December of just under £35 million investment into Haematology, MRI and Oncology services. The building work for this investment needs to be completed before the work on the Women’s and Children’s hospital can start. I visited the staff on the wards currently providing these services to learn more about the plans. While enormous effort is being made to deliver high quality, safe care in the current wards there is no doubt that the new facilities are much needed. As the population of Cornwall grows, and medicine and treatments evolve, more space is needed. There is also the opportunity for the specialist teams at RCHT to offer more services in the community, with new clinics in other health care settings across Cornwall as well as in people’s homes. I also followed the pathway which patients take when coming into A&E. It was good to see at first-hand how changes have been made to improve patients’ experience. Of course, there remain huge challenges, especially around partnership working with other parts of the health and care system in Cornwall, but I will continue to fight for the resources that are needed to provide safe, high quality health and care services in Cornwall. I have also met with GPs and Public Health staff at Cornwall Council. While funding for our local NHS increases each year,

and recent injections of cash for adult social care are welcome, we know there is more to do, especially with our community hospitals and achieving a long term, cross party solution to the funding of adult social care. As a General Election is in the air, please be assured that the NHS has no plans to close Falmouth Hospital. Sadly, some of my political opponents do run these scare stories. It’s not just our local NHS that is receiving additional funding, but our local police, schools and Cornwall Council. I have been working with Cornwall Council, to develop the Britain’s Leading Edge campaign that I helped to launch in Parliament in July. It has a simple premise: for the nation to achieve its potential every citizen needs the opportunity to realise theirs and that we need to unleash the economic opportunities of every region of England, not just those with a large city. The campaign demonstrates the systematic bias in public funding allocations that leaves regions without large cities receiving less funding than those that do. Now is the time to correct this historic bias. This is particularly important now as Cornwall and many of the English regions that make up Britain’s Leading Edge are already making great contributions to tackling the greatest challenge we face in climate change and habitat and species loss. Britain’s Leading Edge provides a significant amount of renewable energy and food for the nation. We have the potential to do more. I want to see Falmouth supporting a growing offshore floating wind industry. We are making progress. Historically, Cornwall’s schools receive less per pupil funding than some others, so I am delighted that the f40 campaign, of which I am a member, has been successful. Our schools will be receiving more funding in each of the next three years. I pressed the government to communicate the actual amounts each school will receive and this should be announced in mid–October and I will publish an update on my website www.sarahnewton. org.uk
