Rabbits are the third most popular pet in the UK but ,sadly, an estimated 67,000 rabbits a year go through rescue centres simply because many owners don’t realise what a big commitment they are!

Some people keep a rabbit in their home. This can work quite well and it is possible for rabbits to get on well with other species. Caution does need to be taken however. There are many potential hazards in a house, such as electrical cables and chemicals.
Should we just consider a rabbit to be a cheap pet, easy to maintain and ideal for children? Your regular bunny can, with the right breaks, commonly live to 10-12 years and he/ she would be happy roaming up to 5 miles per day. However, many find themselves confined in hutches, often without a companion. A pretty miserable existence!
Provide an environment where your rabbits can behave naturally, such as running, jumping, and foraging, as well as digging. Clean them out and check every day for any signs of distress or illness. Have them vaccinated annually against Myxomatosis and Viral Hemorrhagic Disease. Feed them properly with unlimited hay, fresh vegetables and a small amount of good quality rabbit pellets. Keep them entertained with toys, tunnels and hideouts, and somewhere to dig if they don’t have outdoor access.
BUT..If well cared for, rabbits can generally be healthy, rewarding and undeniably attractive pets, with many in need of rehoming from overflowing rescue centres. So, if you are still keen to be a rabbit owner, and we expect you are, Cornish Paws will be very pleased to advise and help both you and your pets to be “happy bunnies”.

So..if you still want to keep rabbits, here are some things you definately need to be aware of… Space. The ideal living area for 2 average sized rabbits in a single enclosed area is at least 3m x 2m by 1m high. And don’t forget: they will dig, possibly for freedom. Have at least two rabbits….but… Neutering is essential before pairing, to avoid unwanted pregnancies and aggressive behaviour. Unspayed females are at very high risk of developing uterine cancer and infection of the uterus and/or womb.

In our work as counsellors at Lifetime we meet many people whose lives have been deeply affected, not by physical abuse but by the way they have been spoken to. In fact for many of our clients, simply witnessing verbal conflict has been enough to leave them deeply scarred, often believing that there was something ‘wrong’ with them in order to make sense of volatile situations. Words are powerful and we would do well to use them carefully and with considera tion.

As humans we are programmed to look out for the bad, whether stated or implied. A sad consequence of constantly hearing negative messages is that , over time, we can start to believe them and even give the same messages to ourselves.
