cornish paws Catch Up FEBRUARY

2022

Based in Penryn, Cornish Paws is a new family run independent veterinary practice. Every month we will bring you the latest information on pet care, food, training and fun stuff.

The last two years have really shown us how amazing and important vaccines are in saving lives and it’s not only ourselves that need protecting. Dogs and cats need yearly boosters to prevent them catching serious and potentially life threatening diseases. When your pet has their booster it not only protects them against the dangers, but it also builds immunity within the population, known as herd immunity, preventing other pets from becoming ill. Also, some diseases, such as leptospirosis are zoonotic, meaning they can also infect humans. These diseases have the potential to make us very ill and can even be deadly.

Rusty Matt &

I NEED MY BOOSTER TOO!

DOGS:

The core vaccines that we recommend your dogs offer protection against distemper virus, hepatitis, parvo virus and leptospirosis. Core vaccines are those classified by the British Small Animal Veterinary Association as one that all dogs should receive, regardless of circumstances or geographical location. Here at Cornish Paws, we offer the L4 vaccine, the most up to date leptospirosis vaccination, covering four different strains of the disease. There is unfortunately misinformation about leptospirosis vaccines, which is worrying, given the potential for both animal and human health implications. The disease itself carries a mortality rate of at least 30%, whereas the incidence of a reaction to the vaccine is a tiny 0.096%, which translates to less than 7 reactions for every 10,000 doses administered. The majority of these reactions are mild, the same way we can feel a bit under the weather for a day or two following a vaccine.

CATS:

We can’t forget our feline friends, who also need yearly boosters to keep them healthy. The core vaccines we recommend for your cat are cat flu (feline herpes virus and feline calicivirus) and feline infectious enteritis. If your cat goes outdoors then we also recommend vaccinating against feline leukaemia virus, which transmits in the saliva of infected cats. If your cat likes to get into fights with other cats in the neighbourhood, it is very important they are protected against this virus. The leukaemia virus can make your cat more likely to get certain cancers and if your cat gets infected with a flu virus, especially at a young age, they often stay infected for life, showing symptoms intermittently. Whilst there has been a global shortage of feline vaccines in recent months at the time of writing this has now been resolved and we welcome our feline friends back for their boosters.

Air Source Heat Pumps - Energy Efficient Heating

I

f you’ve been listening to COP26 and heard all the talk about energy efficient systems such as air source heat pumps and wonder where to go to find out more or get advice on installation, then Mike Couldry, plumbing and heating, have everything you need, even expertise in the electrical fitting aspects of the system.

What is a heat pump? • A heat pump transfers outside energy into heat for the heating and hot water • A fan draws in air from the outside, into the heating system

Heat Pump Advantages • Can be connected to existing heating system • Less expensive to run than a gas or oil boiler system • Helping towards lowering carbon emissions • They can still extract heat when air temperatures are as low as -15 C

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

Air source heat pumps need electricity to run, but because they are extracting renewable heat from the environment, the heat output is greater than the electricity input. This makes them an energy efficient method of heating your home, so you will not only be saving on fuel bills but you will be doing your bit for the planet. If you are really in the dark about how it works or how it can work for you, call the friendly team at Mike Couldry’s, who will be delighted to discuss your heating requirements with you.

IT’S CHEAPER THAN YOU THINK! HOW CAN YOU SAVE MONEY, AND STILL DO YOUR BIT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?

SO, HOW MUCH DOES INSULATING YOUR LOFT COST?

Making your home warmer and greener has never been more important. With Access4Lofts, it’s never been easier or more affordable either!

It could be cheaper than you think! It’s an investment too; you’ll more than make that money back in what you save on your bills. While exact costs obviously vary from house to house, the typical price for insulating your loft in a detached house is around £395, and you can expect annual savings of around £225 on your heating bills.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, as much as 25% of the heat in your home is lost through your loft or roof space. This means you’re getting bigger bills than you should be, and you’re also contributing much more than you need to towards greenhouse gases and your carbon footprint. It’s a major problem for a lot of homes around the UK, but fortunately it is also one with an easy solution - having the right insulation installed. While Access4Lofts specialises in supplying and installing loft ladders, hatches and boarding, we also offer loft insulation that could reduce this heat loss by as much as 20%. That’s going to mean a significant saving on your energy bills.

That’s not just for one year, either – that’s year on year for the lifetime of the product, all the while you’ll be doing your bit for climate change by using less fuel – and all without compromising on a warm and happy home. Interested in finding out more about how loft insulation could work in your home? Call now for a FREE quotation on 01726 806550 or fill in the ‘request a quote’ form on our website www.access4lofts.co.uk/staustell and we will contact you.

All our insulation installs comply with the National Insulation Association (NIA) recommended standard depths of insulation. There’s no need to worry about how this might affect your loft access either. You will still be able to use your loft for storage once it has been insulated because our expert techniques can ensure any storage solution is fitted above your loft insulation.

Household and utilities bills are rocketing, so now is the time to consider insulation as the answer to inflation! According to the Energy Saving Trust in an uninsulated home up to 25% of heat is lost through the roof space! We can supply and install insulation to save your pocket and the planet – and you’ll be surprised how cost-effective our solutions are.

• No waiting around. We arrive on time, every time • Lifetime guarantee • Reliable, local company working in your home • Extra confidence because we are accredited by Which? Trusted Traders • Absolutely no mess and no fuss.

Watergate Bay to Porth

Distance: 3.6 miles/5.8 km Steepness grade: Easy-moderate The walk begins on the beach at Watergate Bay and follows the sand for over a mile to Whipsiderry. The route then crosses Trevelgue Head to reach the beach at Porth. Here, the route joins the coast path and follows this around the promontory fort on Trevelgue Head, then returns past Fruitful Cove with panoramic views over Watergate Bay. The beach crossing at Zacry’s Island involves negotiating an area of boulders, and rock platform with rockpools. Route includes paths close to unfenced cliff edges.. It is critical that you carefully time this walk for low tide: the crossing between beaches at Zacry’s Island is underwater except around 2 hours either side of low tide. Book Review Wahala

Nikki May wrote the first scene of her debut novel Wahala on the train after leaving a “long and very loud” lunch with her Nigerian friends. The upshot is a funny, slightly murdery story about three women and their wahala, or “trouble”—their boyfriends, their professional aspirations, and their weaves. www.falmouthwave.co.uk

The Maid

Not to be confused with the memoir Maid by Stephanie Land, or the subsequent hit Netflix series starring Margaret Qualley, this is a murder mystery novel—a twist-and-turn whodunit, set in a five-star hotel, from the perspective of the maid who finds the body. Think Clue. Think page-turner. to advertise call Ashley on 07800 986216

Common Dog Training Mistakes

here’s a lot of information out there about how to train a dog. Whatever level you want to take your dog to, it is important to try and avoid some of the more common mistakes that I have listed here:

doesn’t return at all. If there’s something your dog really dislikes, avoid using cues in relation to that activity when you first start training

3. Reinforcing Unwanted Behaviour

Some of the most common ‘problem’ behaviours, such as jumping up excitedly This is a big one that most dog owners do when anyone walks in the door, most likely – repeating cues or command nagging. You began when you brought your dog home as say sit, your dog doesn’t respond and you a puppy. Think about how excited everyone say sit again and again. Then, we wonder in the household was, all the patting and why our dog doesn’t respond the first time cuddling that went on as the puppy jumped we say a cue. Well, when you comman nag, all over everyone giving kisses, nibbling at you are essentially teaching your dog he fingers and hair and barking in excitement. doesn’t need to respond the first, second, Fast forward to when the pup is now a even fourth time. Instead, you have now fully grown dog, these behaviours are now taught him that the cue is “Sit, sit, sit, sit.” problematic. The message is very clear, start And your dog will wait for that fourth as you wish to proceed. cue before responding. This may not be so problematic for the sit command but 4. Always training in the same place transfer the issue to the recall command, If you have a dog that behaves perfectly at then what!!!! home and is then a monster everywhere else, you are guilty of this mistake. Dogs don’t generalise – meaning if you teach your dog to sit in your living room and then ask him to sit upstairs or outside, he may not do it, or, it may take him a while to think it through. In order to have a well behaved dog everywhere, be sure to take your training on the road and practice behaviours in lots of places with lots of different distractions.

1. Command nagging

5. Too many treats

While treats are, for most dogs, a great way to start the training process, don’t forget to Poisoning of cues is another trap that many add in praise, toys, and “real life rewards” trainers fall into. This is when you accilike petting and play as soon as your dog dentally associate a cue or behaviour with learns a behaviour. Otherwise, you will something your dog views negatively, so have one of those dogs that only works if he stops responding. For example, you’ve you have food on you and loses the ability finally taught your dog “come,” but now, to learn or push themselves, as they know you use it to summon him for a wash down whatever behaviour they exhibit, they will with the hose — something he hates. You eventually be rewarded with a treat. call him, he comes, and you proceed to There are many different methods in how shower him. The next day, you ask your to train dog’s effectively and an abundant dog to come, and he hesitates. Maybe he amount of information available (some-

Training Tip - Use a whistle

I often recommend the use of a whistle, especially when teaching a dog recall. Dogs hear higher frequency pitches much better than a human voice and this pitch remains the same whoever is blowing it. Once trained to it, they can also be heard at a much greater distance than your voice

ry January can kick start behaviours that improve our wellbeing, but abstaining for a month can also be a way of hiding from a damaging relationship with alcohol. 4,000 people took part in Alcohol Change UK’s first coordinated Dry January in 2013. By 2017, over four million people told a YouGov survey they planned to give up alcohol for a month, and a record 130,000 people signed up in 2021. Some benefits of giving up alcohol short-term

HCPC Registered

Giving up alcohol for a month is more likely to be helpful if you drink moderately. 70% of people who take part in Dry January are drinking “less riskily” after six months, and “almost a quarter” of people drinking at “harmful” levels are considered “low risk” six months after a dry month.* UCL’s Liver Specialist Professor Kevin Moore has shown that quitting alcohol for a month aids weight loss and alters liver fat, cholesterol and blood sugar. The Royal Free Hospital says a month off the booze also improves concentration and sleep patterns.

The problem with an alcohol holiday Professor Moore has said that “if someone had a health product that did all that in one month, they would be raking it in.” He’s right of course - though

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

The uncomfortable truth is that for a lot of people, alcohol feels better than abstinence. When we’re in a relationship with the drink, we’ll do anything to safeguard it, including lying to ourselves and anyone else who threatens our symbiosis. For me, every January has been dry since I had my last drink 37 years ago. Alcohol nearly killed me, but before giving up for good I used every strategy in the book to protect what felt at the time like my most dependable relationship. Dry January can be the worst kind of gift for a drinker, providing personal and social proof that we’re okay and exempt from labels like ‘addict’ and ‘alcoholic’. You can’t have a drinking problem if you’re dry for a month, can you? No alcoholic could abstain for 31 whole days, could they? Well, yes. Addictions want to survive and they’re very resourceful. If you’re making a longterm commitment to not drinking That’s great. Keep going. If I could say anything to my 24-year-old self it would be: take it one day at a time and know it’s okay to be sad about not drinking. You’ve been in a relationship and will be experiencing grief and loss as well as adjusting physically, cognitively and emotionally to not having alcohol in your life. Not drinking is not easy for a lot of us. It takes compassion and support. We’ve been there, and we know that things can be different for you. Please know you can always get in touch with us. Add the milk, oil, and vanilla, then blend until completely smooth, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl or pitcher as needed. 4.
