Getting puppy to walk nicely on the lead! The bane of many people’s lives are dogs that pull them to and fro. As a dog behaviourist, next to recall issues, pulling on the lead is the most common problem I encounter. Like all of these things, prevention is easier than a cure, so here are some handy tips to get you going. For control make sure you have the correct lead and collar. All puppies should be trained using a fixed flat collar and a lead of about 4-6 feet in length. This stage may not work for puppies that already pull you around, if this is the case go to step 2.
For young puppies (under 5 months) carry out this exercise for no more than 2 or 3 minutes and repeat a few times a day. For the first few days you may not progress more than a few steps with a slack line, but bear with it, the penny will drop and the puppy will learn that to go forward the line needs to be slack. Refrain from using the lead to pull your puppy back into position. You do not need a heel command at this stage, as the act of putting the lead on the pup is the cue for them to walk next to you.
Step 2
This step is helpful for you pups that have already started to surge ahead of you and are persistent in not allowing for a slack line.
Step 1
a. Pick up the puppy and attach the lead to the collar and put the puppy down. If the puppy reacts in any way remain still and quiet. b. As soon as there is some slack in the lead, take a step forward. c. If the pup rushes past you, as soon as they reach the end of the lead, stand still. When you get slack in the line, once again take a step forward. d. If the pup hangs back and looks anxious, crouch down to encourage them next to you and make a fuss of them when they are by your side. e. Repeat stages b-d several times.

Each time the pup rushes ahead of you, make an ‘about turn’ and start walking in the opposite direction. d. Keep making about turns, every time the pup moves ahead. You may find this to be extremely often to begin with but bear with it, your pup will quickly give up and learn that to move forward staying by your side makes this happen. Add the ‘heel’ cue as the pup draws alongside you, not when the pup reaches the end of the lead. Myth Busters - All dogs are colourblind!
The myth that dogs can only see the world in shades of black, white and grey has been long accepted as fact. But it turns out that your dog’s perspective isn’t quite as simple as that and like humans, dogs can in fact see (some) colours. Your dog’s (and indeed your own) ability to see colour comes from special photoreceptor’s in the retina called cones. Dogs are dichromatic, which means that they have two types of cones (blue and green) in their retina. In contrast, we humans are trichromatic with three types of cones (blue, green and red). As a result of being dichromatic, our dogs can make out shades of yellow and blue (and combinations) however are unable to perceive the colour red and any combinations. Scientists believe that a dog’s colour vision is akin to that of a someone with red-green colour blindness.

Traffic light chicken shish kebabs

1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Mash butter,

Alternately thread the peppers and chicken onto the skewers until you have 6-8 kebabs. You can do this in advance if you like, and chill the kebabs until needed. 3. Heat a barbecue to medium, or until a thin layer of coals has turned grey. Cook the kebabs for 10 mins, turning occasionally, until the chicken is charred and cooked through. Serve the kebabs with the reserved yogurt sauce, warmed flatbreads, chopped tomatoes and lemon wedges on the side.

Serve immediately with a squeeze of lime and plenty of saffron aïoli

The walk begins across a flat grassy area to reach St Piran’s Cross and Church. The route then enters the undulating dunes to reach St Piran’s Oratory. The walk continues towards the sea to pick up the coast path and follows this along the dunes to the ramp onto Perran Sands beach. The route continues over the cliff to reach the steps onto Perranporth beach. Here, the walk turns inland across the golf course on the dunes. A short stretch of small lane completes the circular walk

1. Start planting out summer bedding plants towards the end of this month in warmer parts of the country. 2. Look after your finished spring bulbs for next year. Once they’ve gone over, resist the temptation to cut back the foliage. Instead, let it die and break down on its own and add liquid fertiliser all around the clumps. This will give you an even better display next spring. 3. Remember to open greenhouse vents and doors on warm days. You can also damp down your greenhouse on hot days to increase humidity and deter red spider mites. 4. Optimise your watering regime — watering early and late to get the most out of your water — and start collecting and recycling water whenever possible 5. Thin out drifts of hardy annuals. Harden off half-hardy plants by leaving them outside during the day and bringing them back under cover at night for 7 to 10 days before planting outdoors. 6. Plant summer hanging baskets, adding good-quality compost, slow-release fertiliser and water-retaining crystals, to keep them in top condition. Protect them from late frost under cover. Try planting petunia 'Pegasus Wine Splash' for cascading stems of brightly spotted blooms. 7. Harden off dahlias and tender exotics such as canna ‘Tropicanna’ lilies for planting as soon as the risk
of frost has passed. 8. Continue dividing herbaceous border perennials to improve vigour and create new plants. 9. Divide established clumps of hostas as they come into growth. 10. Trim back spreading plants such as aubrieta, alyssum and candytuft (Iberis sp.) after they’ve flowered, to encourage fresh new growth and more blooms. 11. Lift forget-me-nots to prevent heavy self-seeding and reduce spreading. 12. Prune penstemons now — cut all the old shoots back to the base, providing there is new growth at the bottom of the plant. If there are no new shoots at the base, cut just above the lowest set of leaves. 13. Take cuttings of tender perennials, such as fuchsia and pelargoniums (tender geraniums). The new shoots of hardy perennials can also be used for cuttings. 14. Take softwood cuttings of shrubby herbs (such as sage and lemon verbena). 15. Prune out overcrowded and dead stems ofearly-flowering clematis after flowering. 16. Tie in rambling and climbing roses. Laying the stems horizontally will help to produce more flowers. 17. Tie in sweet pea plants with sweet pea support rings to encourage them to climb. 18. Prune spring-flowering shrubs after flowering.
