cornish paws Catch Up DECEMBER

2021

Based in Penryn, Cornish Paws is a new family run independent veterinary practice. Every month we will bring you the latest information on pet care, food, training and fun stuff.

For Christmas this year Cornish Paws has asked Santa for more staff! With a national shortage of Veterinary staff, both vets and nurses, we are delighted to have successfully recruited several new staff members. We sadly said goodbye to Jake back in August and we are also saying goodbye to Lauren from the nursing team as she moves on to a new practice in Wales. Jenna is going on Maternity leave this month. So we thought we’d take this opportunity to introduce some new staff members. We also have two more full time vets joining the team in January. We wish all of our clients and pets a very Happy Christmas and New year.

POACHED PEAR & CAREMALISED ORANGE SORBET

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

Christmas bombe recipe With a surprise frozen, creamy filling dotted with sweet festive ingredients, this is a great dessert for Christmas.

INGREDIENTS

Beryl's

400g good-quality chocolate Swiss roll (jumbo size) 390g jar of cherries in kirsch-flavoured syrup 180g caster sugar 75ml water 2 large egg whites 300ml double cream 50g preserved stem ginger in syrup, chopped, plus 1tbsp syrup from the jar 1 tbsp Grand Marnier or Cointreau 50g chopped mixed glace fruit 30g marron glace (optional), chopped 30g shelled pistachio nuts, toasted and roughly chopped few redcurrant sprigs, to finish (optional) Icing sugar to dust (optional)

Bites

Honey-roasted parsnips

METHOD 1. Line a 2-litre bowl with a double layer of cling film, leaving some excess overhanging the rim. Cut the Swiss roll into 1cm slices and use to line the base and sides of the bowl, cutting a few of the slices into pieces to fill the gaps as necessary. Drain the cherries, reserving the syrup. Drizzle the Swiss roll slices with the kirsch syrup, saving a few tablespoons for the top. Set aside. 2. Put the sugar and water into a small heavy-based saucepan and stir over a low heat to dissolve. Increase the heat to high and boil until the syrup registers 120C on a sugar thermometer. Meanwhile, in a clean large bowl, whisk the egg whites to stiff peaks.

3. When the sugar syrup is ready, gradually pour onto the egg whites in a steady stream, whisking as you do so. Continue to whisk until the meringue has doubled in volume and the sides of the bowl no longer feels hot. 4. In another bowl, whisk the cream to soft peaks. Fold in the ginger syrup and orange liqueur, followed by the meringue. Taste and sweeten with a little more ginger syrup if required. Stir through the cherries, chopped ginger, glace fruit, marron glace, if using, and chopped pistachios. Spoon into the Swiss rolllined bowl and level the top. 5. Cover with the remaining Swiss roll slices, cutting them to fit as necessary. Drizzle with the rest of the kirsch syrup, then fold the excess cling film over the top and seal. 6. Place a flat plate on top (one that fits just inside the rim) and weight it down with a heavy tin. Chill for an hour, then remove the weight, wrap and freeze the bombe. 7. To serve, unwrap the bombe and place on a flat cake stand. Decorate with sprigs of redcurrants dusted with icing sugar if you like, or serve it just as it is. Let stand at room temperature for about 15 mins before slicing.

For a speedy cheat’s version, you could replace the creamy meringue filling with a good-quality-ready-made ice cream.

C

hristmas can be a hard time. Everywhere on screen, in shops and public spaces, we’re encouraged by adverts and displays to expect Christmas to be evergreen, red and gold. Perhaps we expect to feel the vitality and sparkle of those colours, and for those around us to experience them with us. But Christmas comes in every colour. Grey might turn up this year, or blue, or black. As I write, The UN Climate Change Conference, COP26 is entering its final week. Research shows that over 75% of young people may now be experiencing persistent eco-anxiety. By adjusting our expectations of Christmas and by doing things a little differently, it’s possible to want less, and have more of the things that sustain us. adjusting your expectations Disappointment is what happens when our expectations don’t show up. We know we can’t order the ‘right’ Christmas feelings any more than we can book the ‘right’ Christmas weather, yet many of us experience disappointment because we expect happiness to arrive along with the snow. Each day is coloured with a shifting and unpredictable spectrum of emotions. The paradox is that when we accept and talk about the harder ones like anxiety, disappointment and loneliness instead of rejecting or tolerating them, they are apt to change.* thinking globally, acting locally One of the causes of eco-anxiety is a lack of control. We depend on a healthy natural world and when it’s threatened, we feel threatened. But we don’t have to wait for political decisions to start protecting it. Connections with other people and with nature make us feel our small but integral part in something greater than ourselves: this need is almost

We know this intuitively through interactions as simple as feeling the rain on our face, having a smile returned, or holding a hand-carved wooden gift. A posted present in plastic, however ingenious, just doesn’t feel the same. And, if we buy our gifts online, we rob ourselves of the endorphins fired by walking to a shop and meeting people. Singer and activist, Pete Seeger told us a long time ago to “think globally, act locally” and UN projects have proven the power of local environmental initiatives to drive social justice, economic development and resilience. By giving our time to community activities and our money to local businesses we find - in another great paradox - that we want so much less and have so much more. meeting your needs Falmouth is a thriving community town and Lifetime is proud to be part of the colourful tapestry of this place. When I visit other towns in Cornwall and around the country I feel grateful for our independent cafés and shops and the opportunities on our doorstep to take part in anything from drama and drawing to pilates and paddleboarding. But it isn’t always easy to take the first step into a new community, however much we’d like to. A counsellor can help us take the first tentative steps in learning how to connect. Please get in touch if you think this could help you. With loneliness and anxiety affecting more of us than ever it’s vital we nurture the people, places and opportunities around us - they sustain us. This Christmas will be a locally sourced one for me, and I know it will be richer in the ways that matter to me most. Thank you for reading Malachy Dunne, Lifetime Therapy founder and counsellor *If you’re interested in finding out more about accepting different experiences and feelings, please take a look at Lifetime’s Journal at www.lifetimetherapy.co.uk where therapeutic acceptance is explored in more depth.

December 2021

Teach your dog to relax.

F

ollowing on from last month’s article where I highlighted some of the difficulties in getting your dog to settle, I have put together some tips devised from a wellknown animal rescue expert Sue Sternberg. Sue says, “To be a successful house pet 90% of a dog’s time will be spent indoors, doing absolutely nothing. This isn’t a substandard dog owner – this is real life. Not every minute can be spent in exercising and training. Most of a companion dog’s time is spent indoors doing absolutely nothing.”

Sternberg refers to the following as, the ‘do-nothing’ game! Step One: Grab a handful of non-smelly treats (we don’t want them sniffing around for them) broken into tiny pieces. Place your dog on a lead (about 2 feet in length) sit on a chair and literally, do nothing. If your dog is not barking and not jumping for five seconds, say “yes” (or your marker word or click) and treat him. Repeat at the ten-second mark, repeat at the 15-second mark, and continue for one to two minutes. Step Two Assess your dog’s capabilities. Was Doing Nothing for five-second increments easy for your dog? If yes, then, begin treating at the ten-second mark and in ten-second increments the next day. If the exercise was extremely difficult for your dog, use less exciting treats and treat him in two-second increments.

Step Three Increase the time your dog has to Do Nothing, based on his personality and capabilities. You’re not in competition with anyone, and every dog is different. If it takes an entire month for your dog not to dance around, not tap his paws, not nudge you, and not bark for ten-second increments, it’s time well spent because you’re teaching him to do what you want—relax. During the first few sessions, be prepared to be very patient and wait your dog out. DO NOT SAY DOWN OR USE ANY OTHER COMMAND. We want our dog to figure out on his own how to get the reward! We don’t want to continually tell him to lie down or be quiet – we want him to be able to do this on his own automatically! When you are done with this exercise, wait until your dog is lying down and then give a release word – “OK” “free” or “all done”. This lets your dog know the job is finished and he can go be a dog! Then get up, unhook the lead, and walk quietly away. Ignore him for a while so he doesn’t get excited and run around. Never reinforce unwanted behaviour. One of the easiest mistakes to make is you sit on the sofa, ready to relax and your dog barks, so you grab a toy to occupy him. Unfortunately, giving something, at that moment, will reward your dog for barking. Don’t wait for your dog to act out to give him a busy toy, give it to him as a preventative tool before you sit down, and before he barks. Not all dogs love relaxing and napping. However, with practice, you can teach your perpetually peppy puppy to hang out with you, without always needing something to do.

Puppy Consultation Includes

• Toilet training • Bite Inhibition • Socialising your puppy • Lead walking • Sit, Down, Stay • Quality recall • How to bond with your puppy • Building a training program into your lifestyle

Adult Dog Behaviour

• Behaviour Concerns • Dog on dog aggression • Hyperactivity • Food and possession guarding • Pulling on lead • Separation anxiety • Recall issues • Jumping up • Excessive barking • Toilet training

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year!

Dogs and Christmas The festive season can be a dangerous time for curious paws and adds some extra hazards to our homes. Here are some things to watch out for: plants (such as the poinsiettia); batteries for toys; chocolate; left over bones; mince pies; tree decorations; small parts from presents; gift wrapping; the list goes on. Just have an awareness of the potential dangers and if necessary place your dog in another room, especially during present unwrapping. www.falmouthwave.co.uk

12 days of Christmas fire safety tips While we enjoy the Christmas break here is a few things to keep in mind, so that you have a safe festive season. 1. Check your Christmas tree lights are in good working order and conform to the British Standard. 2. Never Place candles near your Christmas tree or your furnishings. 3.Think about where you are placing your Christmas tree, is it going to obstruct your means of escape from the room. 4. Always switch off your Christmas lights before you leave the house or when going to bed. 5. Never overload sockets or extension leads. 6. Make sure that any family visitors who are staying with you over the festive period know what to do in the event of an emergency. 7. Take time to check on older relatives and neighbours this Christmas. 8. Some decorations can burn easily, don’t attach them to heaters or lights. 9. The risks of accidents, especially in the kitchen, are greater after alcohol is consumed - take care if you’re having a few festive drinks. 10. Use Christmas as a reminder to clean and test your smoke alarms. 11. Most fires start in the kitchen, never leave a cooker unattended. 12. If you’re planning on using fireworks for your celebrations over Christmas/New year make sure you store them correctly. Never go back to a lit firework.

“Keeping Cornwall Cosy for over 30 years.”

Pioneering the way to a Carbon Neutral Cornwall

I

f you’ve been listening to COP26 and heard all the talk about energy efficient systems such as air source heat pumps and wonder where to go to find out more or get advice on installation, then Mike Couldry, plumbing and heating, have everything you need, even expertise in the electrical fitting aspects of the system.

What is a heat pump?

Air source heat pumps need electricity to run, but because they are extracting renewable heat from the environment, the heat output is greater than the electricity input. This makes them an energy efficient method of heating your home, so you will not only be saving on fuel bills but you will be doing your bit for the planet. If you are really in the dark about how it works or how it can work for you, call the friendly team at Mike Couldry’s, who will be delighted to discuss your heating requirements with you.

Mike Couldry Service Plans • A heat pump transfers outside energy into heat for the heating and hot water • A fan draws in air from the outside, into the heating system

Launching September 2021 Heat Pump Advantages

• Can be connected to existing heating system • Less expensive to run than a gas or oil boiler system • Helping towards lowering carbon emissions • They can still extract heat when air temperatures are as low as -15 C

December Winter Frost

As we approach the shortest day of the year in December you will need work to keep you warm outside, such as digging and tree pruning. Check your winter protection and if you have a greenhouse make sure the heater is working. Hopefully there are not too many jobs left to do this year so you will have time for some fireside garden planning.

Top 10 jobs this month 1 Check your winter protection structures are still securely in place 2 Check that greenhouse heaters are working
