• If the soil is workable, dig in a 2” layer of well-rotted manure or compost into the garden beds and boarders. A general fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone is also a good addition. • Feed shrubs, trees and hedges with a slow release general fertiliser. • Put in supports for any plants that need support this summer. It is always easier to do this job early • Feed Roses. They are hungry plants so will do well for a good feed with a special Rose feed • Begin chitting early seed potatoes. Early potatoes can be planted towards the end of the month • Onions, shallots and garlic sets can be planted but make sure the ground is not frosted or waterlogged • Get bare root fruit trees planted now, it’s not quite too late, as well as soft fruits such as raspberries, gooseberries and blackcurrants • Feed blueberries with an ericaceous feed, they like acidic soil. • Cut autumn fruiting raspberry canes to the ground to encourage new canes. It has had a hard winter with all this rain. Mow on a high setting when it feels dry enough. • Sow flower seeds so they are ready for early summer planting out. • Cut out the top rosette of leaves from Mahonias to encourage branching. • Cut back any remaining dead foliage from perennials and grasses to make way for new growth. • Prune overwintering fuchsias to one or two buds per shoot. • Bare root fruit trees are still alright to plant as are the soft fruits such as raspberries, blackcurrants etc. • Mulch rhubarb with a thick layer of well-rotted manure taking care not to cover the crown. This will help reduce moisture loss and keep the plant healthy. Now is also a good time to plant rhubarb.

Falmouth Spring Flower Show C Princess Pavilion, Gyllyngdune Gardens - March 28th and 29th ornwall’s oldest flower show celebrates its 110th birthday on March 28 and 29 – thanks to Falmouth Town Council who have stepped in after the organising committee retired. The show has run continuously, but for the war years, since first opened in 1910 by Queen Victoria’s daughter Princess Christian. Once the most popular spring flower show in the country, special excursion trains from Paddington brought visitors to the Princess Pavilion, Gyllyngdune Gardens where it is still held today. The show has been run by volunteers, some of whom have spent a lifetime as exhibitors and organisers. Daffodil grower and show president Ron Scamp entered his first blooms in 1971, while
Reg and Pearl Sleeman, the show’s chairman and treasurer, together tot up over 70 years commitment. It has not been possible to recruit a new committee.
The council will now host the show, reluctant to lose an event which attracts a thousand plus visitors and equal number of entries from schoolchildren, and amateur and professional gardeners from the council, university, hotels, historic Glendurgan and Trebah gardens.
Ron Scamp says, ‘It is a great relief to the retiring committee that the show will continue.’ Jacqui Owen, the council’s visitor and community engagement officer, adds, ‘There is real heritage in this show and we hope a new generation will embrace this and take it forward.’ The 118 different classes include 30

There are no fees for taking part and all exhibitors get into the show for free, as do children under 16. Among Ron Scamp’s newly named daffodils at the show will be ‘Plymouth Hoe’, a fitting tribute for the city’s 400th Mayflower celebrations from Falmouth’s historic flower show.

CHINESE BEEF & AUBERGINE HOTPOT Make this beef stew on for a cosy night in. With aubergine and Chinese spices, the flavours are warming and it’s slow-cooked for deliciously tender meat 5 star anise 1 cinnamon stick 3 tbsp sunflower oil 2kg braising steak (shin is best), cut into large chunks 1l chicken stock 3 red chillies, split in two and deseeded, plus extra sliced into rounds to serve 100g galangal (use ginger if you can’t find galangal), sliced 2 tbsp Thai fish sauce 200ml soy sauce 1 tbsp demerara sugar 6 kaffir lime leaves 3 aubergines, , cut into wedges rice and coriander, to serve

METHOD 1. Heat oven to 150C/130C fan/gas 2. Heat a large casserole dish, toast the star anise and cinnamon until fragrant, then scoop out of the dish. Add the oil, then brown the beef in batches (be careful not to overcrowd the pan). Set the meat aside on a plate. 2. Add the rest of the ingredients (except for the aubergine) to the casserole dish, stir well and bring to the boil. Add the spices and
meat back in, skim off any fat that comes to the surface, then cover the casserole and cook in the oven for 2 hrs. 3. Remove the lid, add the aubergine, and give everything a good stir, then return to the oven and cook for 1 hr uncovered until the aubergine and meat are tender. Rest until cool enough to eat. Scatter over the coriander and sliced red chilli, then serve with rice.
