Help your local children’s hospice reach their pot of gold this summer
C
hildren’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is excited to announce plans for its Rainbow Run Your Way fundraiser on 19 – 20 June 2021. Rainbow Run has become an event synonymous with sunny days and explosions of colour across three different locations in the south west including RAF St Mawgan in Newquay. Last year due to COVID restrictions the event went virtual and still raised £100,000 for the charity. This year participants will be encouraged to once again take on the Rainbow Run in their own way. Open to absolutely anyone who wants to get involved, CHSW is encouraging participants to pick a route of any distance and complete it however they wish. It will be a chance to don a bright outfit and complete your distance by running, skipping, walking, skating or riding and have fun along the way. The aim will be to collectively raise £30,000 for each of the charity’s three children’s hospices, including Little Harbour in St Austell, a poignant target to reach for the charity’s 30th anniversary year. This free, fun and very colourful fundraiser is kindly being sponsored by Ann’s

The more control you have over your dog the more freedom they will enjoy.
S
ome training classes or methods are ineffective by design. Many dogs will respond to all learnt commands in the training environment, when food is involved or simply when they want to. Responding when they want to however, generally doesn’t fit with when they NEED to or when you want them to!
There are a great many reasons why dogs do not listen or respond in different situations. The main is that their training is incomplete and has not been ‘generalised’ – they have simply not learnt that all of those commands that you have taught them apply all of the time; in all situations, locations and environments. Dogs frequently learn that ‘training’ happens once a week at classes or in a situation whereby you are focussed completely on the dog. They then associate your lack of consistency /concentration with the choice to ignore you. If they never had ignored you successfully – then they never would.
How do I improve control? Pippa Mattinson, a renowned UK dog trainer and someone I have immense amount of respect for, outlines 5 key stages in creating and maintaining trained responses in your dog and in doing so enabling you to have greater control. 1. Establish the behaviour - there are no commands or cues-just actions and rewards 2. Pairing the desired behaviour with a signal - build an association between the action you want e.g. the sit and the word or signal you will be using to trigger this behaviour. Introduce the cue word or signal while the action is occurring and not before. 3. Teach the dog to respond - Slightly different to stage 2 in that we introduce the signal or word as a cue for the behaviour to begin. Instead of pairing the signal with the behaviour we use it to trigger the action we require, e.g. rather than call your pup as they are running towards you (stage 2) use your cue word to trigger the behaviour before it is occurring. 4. Proof the response - the last 2 stages are where it all seems to go wrong for many new dog owners, as many seem to miss out on it. You need to teach your puppy to respond to a signal no matter what else is happening around them. Add duration, distance and distractions to all taught behaviours. 5. Maintain the response : Once your dog’s trained response has been taught it is important to maintain it. Reward your dog from time to time and interact with them outdoors. If you make yourself an interesting walking partner, it will prevent your puppy form going off to find their own rewarding activities and help maintain the taught behaviours whilst keeping your relationship strong.

of greaseproof paper, sprinkle your grated beeswax onto the fabric, cover with another piece of greaseproof paper and run the warm iron over the top, melting the wax into the fabric. Repeat until the fabric is covered.
4. Trim the edges and your
food wraps are ready for use. They keep food fresher for longer and are anti-bacterial. Just wipe them clean with a damp cloth. Great to use for picnics, for work or covering chutneys and jams. To refresh their properties, just iron more beeswax onto the fabric. (Not suitable for raw meat or fish)

Indian-spiced potatoes and raita on toast INGREDIENTS 800 g baby new potatoes Olive oil, for frying 200 g cherry tomatoes, halved 1 onion, chopped 3 tsp ground cumin 3 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp dried chilli flakes 5 garlic cloves, crushed 5 spring onions, finely sliced
Small handful of mint, leaves only, roughly chopped 200 g fortified soya milk yoghurt 4 slices of sourdough or wholemeal bread 2 avocados, halved, stoned and thinly sliced Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

METHOD 1. Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling salted water for 15–20 minutes until tender. Drain thoroughly and cut into large bite-size pieces. 2. Coat the bottom of a large non-stick frying pan with olive oil and set over a high heat. Add the potatoes, tomatoes, onion and 2½ teaspoons each of the ground cumin and coriander and ½ teaspoon of the dried chilli flakes. Fry for about 12 minutes, flipping the potatoes every now and again, until golden and crispy in places. Reduce the heat, add most of the garlic and fry for another minute until aromatic. Remove from the heat and stir in the spring onions. Season to taste. 3. For the raita, mix together the yoghurt and most of the mint with the remaining garlic and spices, and season to taste. 4. Toast the bread and top with the spiced potatoes, sliced avocado, raita and remaining mint leaves. Serve immediately, for example with a spinach, grated carrot and yellow pepper salad.
INGREDIENTS LIME DRESSING / MARINADE: 2 tbsp lime juice 1 tbsp honey 1/4 cup olive oil (65ml) 1 garlic clove, minced ½ tsp salt + black pepper CHICKEN: 2 small chicken breasts, 400g/14oz (pound or split if thicker than 2cm / 4/5”) 1/2 tsp EACH chipotle powder and oregano 1/4 tsp cumin powder
Salt & pepper 1/2 tbsp olive oil AVOCADO SALSA: 1 avocado, chunky dice (watch video to see how I do this) 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved ¾ cup corn kernels (canned, drained) ½ red onion, finely chopped SALAD: 1/4 cup coriander / cilantro, finely chopped 5 heaped cups cos / romaine lettuce, cut into bite size pieces
METHOD 1. Place Lime Dressing ingredients in a jar, shake well. 2. Put 2 tablespoons of Dressing in a ziplock bag. Add chipotle, oregano, cumin, salt and pepper, mix/squidge bag. Add chicken, seal and massage to coat. Marinate 30 min – overnight. 3. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in skillet over medium low, cook chicken to taste (2cm / 4/5” takes around 8 minutes), getting a nice brown crust on it. Rest 5 min then slice.

4. Add 2 tablespoons of coriander into Dressing, shake. 5. Place avocado, corn, tomato and onion in a bowl. Add remaining coriander, drizzle with a bit of dressing, toss gently. 6. Place lettuce in a bowl, drizzle with a bit of Dressing, toss. 7. Assemble Salad: Place lettuce on a serving platter. Top with Salsa and sliced chicken. Drizzle with remaining Dressing. Serve.

1. Sowings can now be made outdoors of alstroemeria, achillea, arabis, canterbury bells, coreopsis, erigeron, myosotis and sweet william seeds. 2. Sow in the greenhouse polyanthus, primrose and pansy for autumn planting to flower in spring. 3. In early June apply general purpose-pelleted organic fertiliser prior to planting out summer bedding plants. 4. Thin out hardy annuals sown direct in their flowering positions. 5. Plants in the home are always popular and June is an ideal time to raise foliage plants such as coleus and the sensitive plant (mimosa pudica). 6. To brighten up winter and spring displays indoors, make sowings of calceolaria, cineraria and primula obconica. 7. Although it will be some time before they flower, sow cactus and the amazing strelitzia seed. 8. If you have any spare bedding plants left over such as celosia, begonia, geranium or impatiens (busy lizzie) pot them up to provide a colourful display in a light porch or on a windowsill, to provide colour throughout the summer 9. To encourage strong growth along with a good flower display
sprinkle rose fertiliser around the roots. 10. If it doesn’t rain during the first week or two gently water in or use a hoe being careful not to harm the roots. 11. Remove any dead foliage from spring flowering bulbs, with the exception of daffodils and tulips which could be left a little longer but do take off any seed-heads that may appear. However, if possible, it is best to allow the foliage to naturally die back. 12. Lilies that are in pots will be growing quickly at this stage of the season, with the flowers starting to develop, and could very well need a few canes for support. 13. Lilies in garden borders may also need to be supported if they are not close to neighbouring plants 14. Plant out greenhouse raised brussels sprouts, cabbage, celery, courgettes, cucumbers, marrows, runner and french beans. 15. Beetroot, carrots and lettuce rows can be thinned out and further sowings can be continued. 16. Remember smaller crops will be produced when over-crowded sowings are made, and any unwanted seedlings should be carefully removed
