Helford Passage 6.3 Miles
The walk follows paths and a lane through the mediaeval farmstead of Bosveal to the pretty creekside hamlet of Durgan. From here the walk passes the gate into Glendurgan gardens before once more following the Helford River to Helford Passage. At The Bar, the route turns inland and passes the entrance to Trebah gardens then crosses the top of Porth Navas creek where oysters are still fished as they were in Victorian times. The remainder of the walk is on footpaths across daffodil fields, through woods and on small lanes

Doggy Talk... What is my dog trying to tell me?
W
hilst we will never really know what is going through a dog’s mind, there are some clear signals that we can pick up that help us determine their emotional state at a particular point in time. Recognising these can help us both in our understanding of what makes our dogs happy but also what may be concerning them. Here are just few of the many ways in which your dog might be trying to communicate with you:
Tongue flicking
Sneezing and yawning
In addition to face and tail movement, dogs also try to communicate using the rest of their body. If your pup rolls over and bares his belly to you, he is initiating this gesture to appease you (but a belly rub is always welcome!) Dogs also communicate with each other this way, rolling over as a sign of passive resistance to perceived threat.
Dogs sometimes try to communicate with us by sneezing and yawning unnecessarily. A misplaced sneeze or yawn means that your dog is uncomfortable and stressed, often around new pets or people. Believe it or not, humans do this when they feel uncomfortable too! This can get confusing because dogs also yawn when they are feeling content around you. The key is to look for misplaced yawning in unfamiliar circumstances.
Tongue flicks are often driven by anxiety and a desire to appease the owner or avoid conflict, but they do not mean your dog knows he’s been “naughty” and is sorry. Dogs can certainly read our body language, and may get worried or anxious if we seem upset, but this is not the same thing as feeling guilt, or understanding that they’ve done something wrong.

Raising a paw
Dogs communicate that they want attention by raising a paw and touching you. You probably see this most often when you’re sitting and your dog approaches you to put a paw on your knee. In puppies, this is communicated by pawing the air repeatedly.
Freezing Tail Wagging
Perhaps the most widely recognisable form of dog communication is tail movement and the most commonly misinterpreted. In addition to the joyful wagging tail, a dog’s tail can communicate a range of other emotions. For example, a slow wagging means your dog is feeling cautious, and a stiff tail held high means your dog is on alert. A low tail means your pup is feeling content, but a tucked tail means he is feeling scared. If your dog is wagging his tail vigorously enough to make his butt to wiggle (we all know what I’m talking about), he’s elated to see you!
Have you ever approached your dog with a bone and noticed the way he suddenly freezes midchew upon noticing you? Freezing in the middle of an action is a clear way dogs communicate that they are feeling uncertain and want to be left alone. If your dog freezes mid-chew, or in the middle of another action, it’s best to honour his wishes and give him some space but forewarned is forearmed, this could be the start of some form of guarding!

Contrary to popular belief dogs are not pack animals. It is a semi contentious issue and a subject that fills the dog world full of differing opinions. The whole reason the domestic dog does so well living among is humans is that they have adapted themselves to a different life other than pack life. Social status within the group is important but this is a long way from the pack comparison often made with dogs and wolves.

Lemon curd & blueberry loaf cake
INGREDIENTS
175g softened butter , plus extra for greasing 500ml tub Greek yogurt (you need 100ml/3.5fl oz in the cake, the rest to serve) 300g jar good lemon curd (you need 2 tbsp in the cake, the rest to serve) 3 eggs zest and juice 1 lemon , plus extra
zest to serve, if you like 200g self-raising flour 175g golden caster sugar 200g punnet of blueberries (you need 85g/3oz in the cake, the rest to serve) 140g icing sugar edible flowers , such as purple or yellow primroses, to serve (optional)

METHOD 1. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Grease a 2lb loaf tin and line with a long strip of baking parchment. Put 100g yogurt, 2 tbsp lemon curd, the softened butter, eggs, lemon zest, flour and caster sugar into a large mixing bowl. Quickly mix with an electric whisk until the batter just comes together. Scrape half into the prepared tin. Weigh 85g blueberries from the punnet and sprinkle half into the tin, scrape the rest of the batter on top, then scatter the other half of the 85g berries on top. Bake for 1 hr 10 mins-1 hr 15 mins until golden, and a skewer poked into the centre comes out clean. 2. Cool in the tin, then carefully lift onto a serving plate to ice. Sift the icing sugar into a bowl and stir in enough lemon juice to make a thick, smooth icing. Spread over the top of the cake, then decorate with lemon zest and edible flowers, if you like. Serve in slices with extra lemon curd, Greek yogurt and blueberries.

• Cut back faded perennial plants to keep borders tidy. • As your penstemon flowers fade, cut them back to just above a bud to encourage more flowers. • Cutting back growth in hanging baskets can encourage new flowers and foliage and will revive the display. Make sure you feed your baskets well after doing this. • Cut back hardy geraniums and delphiniums after the first flush of flowers to encourage new growth and further blooms. • Continue to tie in and train new growth on climbing plants. • Prune wisteria now. Just remove the whippy side-shoots from the main branch framework to about 20cm from their base (about five leaves from the main stem). • Prune lupins to encourage more flowers. • If you need to prune your deciduous magnolia, now’s the best time to do it. • Divide clumps of bearded Iris so they have time to form roots and flower buds for next year before the cold weather arrives. • Take cuttings from your favourite tender plants for overwintering indoors. Cuttings can also still be taken from shrubs and border perennials.
• Deadhead bedding plants and perennial plants to stop them self-seeding and to encourage further flowering. • Deadhead your roses to keep them looking tidy. Leave the flowers in place if your rose produces attractive hips (seed pods). • Deadhead sweet peas regularly to keep them blooming. Water daily in dry weather. • Capture seed heads from dandelions and other weeds. Collect them before they get a chance to release their seeds and spread throughout your garden. • Keep an eye out for pests on plants, early treatment is best. • Stop rust damaging hollyhock foliage by pruning out affected leaves and/or spraying with a fungicide. • Look out for clematis wilt. Symptoms include wilting leaves and black discolouration on the leaves and stems. Cut out all affected material and dispose of it in your household waste. • July is a good time to spray ground elder, bindweed and other persistent weeds with a glyphosate-based weed killer as the plants now have lots of leaf surface area with which to absorb it.
