Rosemullion Pet Page

Here at Rosemullion, we have recently taken part in Rabbit Awareness Week 2019 (RAW) because these lovely furry friends are quite often overlooked…

W

e want to tell you more about why rabbits make such great pets and how you can make sure your bunnies are the bounciest they can be! Rabbits are highly intelligent, inquisitive animals. They come in all different shapes and sizes with their own unique personalities. Surprisingly, a study found that only 2% of the UK’s adult population have rabbits as pets! Rabbits are lovely animals to keep for more than just a few reasons. First of all, they are extremely energetic creatures and they’re great fun to watching jumping and running around. Second, they are extremely sociable animals. When looked after correctly and provided with both bunny friends and caring owners, they can become fantastic companions. They are also great at keeping themselves clean and can even be litter-trained! Rabbits have 5 key welfare needs that must be met to keep them happy and healthy - Environment, Diet, Behaviour, Company and Health.

ENVIRONMENT

be sheltered from the elements. Rabbits are extremely playful so it’s important that you can provide them with lots of rabbit toys to keep them occupied. Great, inexpensive options are willow balls and cardboard tubes; however there are plenty of places that offer toys, tunnels and hiding places designed specifically for rabbits.

DIET

Rabbits need extremely high levels of fibre in their diet. Without high fibre foods their digestive systems will not work correctly; their gut should be in constant motion, and without this they are susceptible to gut stasis. Rabbit’s teeth are designed to continuously grow as they get worn down by the fibrous grasses they feed on in the wild. Without enough abrasive foods, their teeth can become overgrown making it painful for them to eat at all. That’s why, as an owner, it’s so important that you ensure your rabbits diet is made up of 8590% high quality hay or grass. The other 10% - 15% should be made up of a nutritionally balanced high-fibre nugget or pellet. Natural snacks and fresh greens can be fed in small amounts as a treat to provide variety and additional nutrition. You can use these to encourage foraging, to help bonding or to keep your bunnies occupied.

BEHAVIOUR & COMPANIONSHIP

Living in a suitable place with enough space to exercise freely in both daytime and night time, whether this is an outdoor run or a bunny-proofed room indoors. The housing itself should be as big as possible, with safe hiding places, plenty of soft bedding and a toileting area separate from the sleeping areas. When kept outside, your rabbits housing should be warm, dry and well ventilated as well as secure and predator and escape-proof. Most importantly, it needs to

We already know that rabbits are extremely sociable, so much so they can become depressed without social interaction with other bunnies. You should keep rabbits in at least pairs where possible, adopting siblings is great as they already know each other and so are less likely to fight. If you are introducing rabbits to each other for the first time, you should do so slowly and follow your vet’s advice. All rabbits kept together should be neutered, even siblings, to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Rabbits are very friendly and enjoy interaction with humans as well as their other bunny friends. Therefore, it is important to make time daily to interact with your rabbits. Naturally, rabbits are not aggressive animals however, much like any animal; they can bite, scratch or kick if they are feeling nervous or afraid. This is more likely to happen when you

are handling them as they feel safest when they are on the ground. It is best to avoid picking up your rabbits where possible as they much prefer being petted on the floor. Although, when you do need to pick one of your rabbits up, you should place one hand under the rabbit’s chest, the other hand under the hind legs and lift your rabbit while holding them against your body to keep them secure.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

You should take your bunny for a veterinary check-up at least once a year. Rabbits are prey animals so they will hide all signs of ill-health which makes regular vet visits really important. Myxomatosis and RVHD1/2 are all life-threatening diseases which can be prevented. Many rabbits in the UK are not vaccinated against these deadly diseases and are therefore at risk. Your vet can vaccinate your rabbits against all diseases with a simple trip to the vets once a year. Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment available for any of these diseases and in most cases, they are fatal. If you’re thinking about keeping rabbits, it’s important that you understand the commitment s involved. Like any pets, they require commitment and investment from their owners. We recommend getting some advice from a local vet or charity before you go ahead, and we would always recommend that you adopt a bunny from a rescue centre such as RSPCA or Blue Cross. • Dead head hanging baskets regularly and possibly trim them a little if required. This will encourage more flowers • Cut back hardy Geraniums and Delphiniums after their first flowers have faded to encourage new growth and more flowers • Remove whippy side shoots from Wisteria. Cut them back to about 5 leaves from the main stem • Dead head roses to keep them tidy and produce more flowers also Sweet Peas. The more Sweet Pea flowers you pick the more you will get • Pinch out Tomato side shoots each week. As the tomatoes start to swell remove the leaves below the lowest ripening fruit truss. This help air flow through the plant so helping to prevent diseases • Keep feeding your Tomatoes with Tomato feed once a week. Tomato feed is also good for Peppers and Cucumbers too. • It is best not to harvest Rhubarb

after mid-July. This will allow the energy to go back into the crown for next year. • Keep weeds under control. They compete with the plants for food, water and light • Protect fruits from squirrels and birds with netting laid over the plants • Check the leaves of Gooseberries for sawfly larvae. They can strip the leaves off a branch in no time • Prune Plum, Peach, Apricot and Cherry trees now. Pruning these trees in the summer reduces the risk of the tree getting silver leaf disease • Order trees for autumn planting • Make sure any newly turfed or seeded lawns are watered during warm spells • If we are lucky enough to have a long hot spell, raise the lawn mower cutting height to reduce the stress on the grass • Keep on top of the watering.

Food & Drink

SUMMER PUDDING FREE hot drink with any

breakfast or lunch purchase, when quoting “Wave” 3 Market Strand, Falmouth, TR113DB Telephone: 01326 313114

This quintessentially British pud, packed with juicy summer berries, is so much easier than it looks, perfect for beginners

METHOD

Beryl's BITES

1. Bring out the juices: Wash fruit and gently dry on kitchen paper – keep strawberries separate. Put sugar and 3 tbsp water into a large pan. Gently heat until sugar dissolves – stir a few times. Bring to a boil for 1 min, then tip in the fruit (not strawberries). Cook for 3 mins over a low heat, stirring 2-3 times. The fruit will be softened, mostly intact and surrounded by dark red juice. Put a sieve over a bowl and tip in the fruit and juice. 2. Line the bowl with cling film and prepare the bread: Line the 1.25-litre basin with cling film as this will help you to turn out the pudding. Overlap two pieces of cling film in the middle of the bowl as it’s easier than trying to get one sheet to stick to all of the curves. Let the edges overhang by about 15cm. Cut the crusts off the bread. Cut 4 pieces of bread in half, a little on an angle, to give 2 lopsided rectangles per piece. Cut 2 slices into 4 triangles each and leave the final piece whole. 3. Build the pud: Dip the whole piece of bread into the juice for a few secs just to coat. Push this into the bottom of the basin. Now dip the wonky rectangular pieces one at a time and press around the basin’s sides so that they fit together neatly, alternately placing wide and narrow ends up. If you can’t quite fit the last piece of bread in it doesn’t matter, just trim into a triangle, dip in juice and slot in. Now spoon in the softened fruit, adding the strawberries here and there as you go. 4. Let flavours mingle then serve: Dip the bread triangles in juice and place on top – trim off overhang with scissors. Keep leftover juice for later. Bring cling film up and loosely seal. Put a side plate on top and weight down with cans. Chill for 6 hrs or overnight. To serve, open out cling film then put a serving plate upside-down on top and flip over. serve with leftover juice, any extra berries and cream.

DIY Wall Hanging 1.You’ll need a mounting stick, cotton twine and various wearable materials, such as wool, raffia, lace, hessian, ribbon, in fact whatever you want or have left over from knitting/other craft projects. 2. Decide how long you’d like the wall hanging to be, then fix double lengths of twine at intervals, but ending with an odd number of lengths. You can use little screw eyes or just tie off round the stick. 3. Fix a double length of twine to the top to create a hanger, then fix down as shown, to stop the project moving. Start to weave over and under each twine, then push up to keep the design tight, working your way down the lengths. Occasionally, tie a length of twine across the hanging to provide stability. 4. When you’ve reached the bottom, tie a length across the hanging to keep everything in place and stop it slipping down. Gather the outstanding twine together or tie off the another stick. If you tie off, you could add something decorative such as a tassel. If you finish off using a stick, the design will be square and you can embellish the bottom using braid, fringing, pom-poms or whatever takes your fancy!

XPRESS Car Air Con at

A poorly performing car air conditioning system can cause a build up of fungus, bacteria and other microbes growing inside the evaporator core, causing a smell, sometimes an allergic reaction and can lead to legionnaires disease. This could cause a smell, sometimes an allergic reaction and can lead to legionnaires disease.

There are many reasons to have your car AC checked; windows not demisting, car not cold enough, runny nose or headaches, strange noises when the AC is on and refrigerant loss (an average car looses up to 15% each year.) If you have noticed any of the above it may be time to think about having your air conditioning system serviced.

Xpress Garage and Tyres offer a comprehensive aircon service from just £70.00 including VAT.

£70 How We Service Your Air Con:

1. Visual Inspection: Our experts take a look for leaks or damage within your air conditioning system.

2. Air Con Compressor Checked: The AC compressor is looked over along with the other components to make sure that is is operating properly. 3. Old Refrigerant Removed: The old coolant is completely taken out of the vehicle. 4. Clean Refrigerant Added: The air con is recharged by adding fresh refrigerant with a special dye so that we can detect any leaks. 5. I love going to the Cornwall Polytechnic Society (the Poly) for talks, exhibitions and to watch films and live performances. But when it was founded in 1833, it was quite different. The Society was formed “to promote the useful and fine arts, to encourage industry, and to elicit the ingenuity of a community distinguished for its mechanical skill”. As the Poly’s website says, “The Society was certainly founded on philanthropic principles, but President, Sir Charles Lemon, seven prominent Cornish Vice Presidents, and the Chairman, Charles Fox, were all successful businessmen, for whom whatever ‘encouraged industry’ should also be good for business. With this in view, the founders determined that a large Hall should be erected by the Society to accommodate an annual exhibition of new inventions, especially mechanical ones, in an era when science was continually revealing new wonders to the world.” Sir Charles remained the Society’s President for 34 years, until the age of 83. He served as Member of Parliament for Penryn and funded the establishment of what is now the Camborne School of Mines. He was at one time President of three scientific societies in Cornwall: the Royal Geological Society, the Royal Institution, and the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society from its foundation until his death. The Society was an important player in the first Industrial Revolution in Cornwall, with many learned papers by scientists and engineers published in the Annual Reports, which grew to considerable length. In 1843 the Exhibition featured an early demonstration of the new art of photography, and in 1865 Alfred Nobel was awarded, in absentia, a Silver Medal for the invention of nitro-glycerine, which was tested very successfully in Falmouth Docks, blowing a large iron anvil to bits. Exhibitions demonstrated the electric telegraph, electric lighting, the telephone, wireless telegraphy, gas and oil engines, rock drilling machinery, and many other scientific inventions. With the demise of mining in Cornwall, the Poly’s fortunes changed. I like to think that my predecessor would be pleased by the recent news that has the potential to reinvigorate that legacy as Cornwall is set to play a leading role in the high-tech, Clean Growth fourth industrial revolution. Companies across the country, including those based here, are set to benefit from £23 million government investment to help them keep the UK at the forefront of developing the latest electric vehicle technology. Businesses, ranging from small designers to major car manufacturers, are among the winners of the government’s Faraday Battery Challenge, recently announced by Business Secretary, Greg Clark. It

forms part of the government’s drive to maintain the UK as a world leader in the latest technologies and emerging markets, through its modern Industrial Strategy. The Faraday Battery Challenge brings together world leading academia and businesses to accelerate the research needed to develop the latest electric car battery technologies – a crucial part of the UK’s move towards a net zero emissions economy. It is also a key contributor to all new cars and vans being effectively zero emission by 2040. Mining consultancy firm, Wardell Armstrong, based at Wheal Jane, Baldu, which works with experts at the Natural History Museum and mining firm Cornish Lithium, will lead a new study looking to develop a UK supply of lithium, helping to meet the massive demand expected from the transition to electric vehicles. The government will continue to invest in future car manufacturing, batteries and electrification infrastructure through our modern Industrial Strategy and local businesses will be key in ensuring that the UK leads the world in the global transition to a low carbon economy - one of the greatest industrial opportunities of our time. The recent £23 million investment forms part of the total £274 million that will be awarded to consortia across the UK, through the Faraday Battery Challenge, part of the government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF). Faraday Battery Challenge director, Tony Harper, said: “Across the three rounds of funding competitions we have now awarded a total of £82.6 million to 63 projects. This is a massive investment in business-led battery R&D in the UK, supporting innovative technologies and helping to build a UK supply chain that can compete on the global stage.” UK Research and Innovation Chief Executive, Professor Sir Mark Walport, said: “The Faraday Battery Challenge brings together the UK’s world class expertise across research and industry to deliver battery technologies that will power the vehicles of the future. The projects funded emphasise how this collective expertise is being brought to bear on the biggest challenges facing the development of next generation electric car batteries, from their power source and performance to safety and manufacturing.” Like many local families, my ancestors were local miners, in our case at Baldu and Twelveheads, so I am delighted that Cornwall’s mining expertise will continue to play a key role in tackling the greatest challenge of our time.
