Rosemullion Pet Page June is National Microchipping Month – are you all clued up on the rules and recommendations for microchipping your pets?
WHAT IS A MICROCHIP A microchip is a small electronic device about the size of a grain of rice. Each microchip has a unique 15 digit number which is registered on a national database with all your pets’ details including their name, address and contact number. The microchip is implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades, using a needle and an implanter syringe. The procedure is simple and doesn’t cause any harm to your pet.
If your pet is found by or taken to a Veterinary Surgery, Local Authority or Animal Welfare Charity, they will automatically be checked using a Microchip scanner. Your details can then be obtained from the National Database and you will be contacted as soon as possible. MICROCHIPPING YOUR DOG
cannot be sold until they are eight-weeks-old and must be microchipped at the point of sale. If you're buying a puppy, make sure it's microchipped before taking them home. If your dog isn't microchipped and registered on an approved database then you could be served with a notice ordering you to microchip your dog. You'll have 21 days to do so or you may be liable to pay a £500 fine and could face criminal prosecution. It is worth noting that the Control of Dogs Order 1992 states that ‘any dog in a public place should wear the Name and Address of their owner either inscribed on a collar or a name plate/disc attached to it’ – a contact number is also optional but advisable. Some owner’s also choose to add their pets name to the identity tag, however we advise NOT to do this as this makes it easier for your pets to be identified/associated with any person who may find them MICROCHIPPING YOUR CAT Whether you’ve got a new kitten or you’ve adopted a cat, it is particularly important to microchip your pet. Unlike collars, microchips don’t come off or put your cat at risk. There is no minimum age for microchipping your cat, but it is advised that it is best to get it done as soon as possible. You can book to have your cat microchipped at your local veterinary practice, a local authority or by a trained and insured member of an animal welfare organisation such as Cats Protection.
Most dog owners are aware that it is now a legal requirement for all dogs over the age of 8 weeks to be microchipped, since the new microchipping laws came into effect on 6th April 2016. Under the new measures all owners must ensure their dog is microchipped and their details are kept up to date. All dog breeders are responsible for ensuring puppies are microchipped before selling them. Puppies
Microchipping is the most effective way to identify a lost cat, keeping your cat safe if it goes wandering. Unfortunately, we see all too many cats come through our doors that are NOT microchipped, which makes it very difficult to reunite cats with their owners. As a Veterinary Practice, we will only take in a ‘stray’ if they are sick or injured. If they are well in themselves, we cannot provide a boarding service as this puts them at risk, as well as putting extra pressure on our weekend
and overnight staff. We have an obligation to hold any sick or injured ‘stray’ animal for 7 days, if no ownership details are available. After this period, the animal will be put forward for rehoming, as it is not feasible for us to keep a now healthy animal at the surgery for any longer than necessary.
UPDATE YOUR DETAILS It is so important to make sure that your pet’s microchip details are kept up to date. A microchip is only useful if it provides a means of contacting the current owner of that animal. You can update or change your pets’ microchip details using the online database they are registered with. It is quick and simple, and ensures that you will always have the best chance of reuniting with your furry friend should they go missing. If you are unsure of your pets microchip number, just visit your local veterinary practice – they can scan your pets microchip and find out their unique identification number and which database you need to contact. Microchipping your pet costs as little as £15 and will give you peace of mind that your pet will always be able to find its way back to you. 2. Tape the mat down with masking tape to prevent slippage, then position the stencil in place with small pieces of tape. We can all be empowered to help tackle climate change.
The harrowing scenes from David Attenborough’s ‘Our Planet’ documentary series clearly show the impacts humans are having on the natural world. While the scale of the global challenge facing humanity can feel overwhelming, the latest data shows a record 80 percent of British people are concerned about climate change and support taking action to tackle it. As a Member of Parliament, I meet many constituents of all ages and backgrounds who want to do more. Scientists from around the world have shown that we need to reach net zero emissions of harmful greenhouse gases by 2050. They warn that inaction risks the world reaching tipping points at 2°C warming that will see the melting of permafrost releasing greenhouse gases that have been stored for millennia. Furthermore, they say this will severely impact our food, water and air quality. The Government’s independent advisors, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC), have recently published a report showing that it is entirely possible for the UK to reach net zero emissions by 2050 if we act now. This will require a rethink for many policies across Government to enable our public services, businesses, communities and people reduce harmful emissions. That is the task before politicians now. Work by leading businesses, engineers and the Bank of England has shown we can do this without wrecking our economy. In fact, if we carefully manage the transition there are opportunities to develop new technologies, products and services. Many of my constituents also want to know what they can do. 60 percent of the emissions reductions outlined by the CCC involve some societal or behavioural changes, so it’s vitally important to build on people’s interest in this challenge and involve and empower them to make a difference on an individual level too. In 2009, my constituent Luci Isaacson and her organisation, Climate Vision, set up the 10 Pledge Challenge working with ten local community leaders and people to reduce their emissions. Over four months, 3,000 tonnes of CO2 was saved. I learnt a lot about what changes we can all make to help. These choices don’t always need to be big and expensive like investing in an electric vehicle, although the total cost of ownership for an EV is now cost competitive, and they’re on their way to being cheaper up front too. I have recently retaken the pledges and they were relatively simple things that we can all do, like switching energy provider, walking more often and eating more local in-season produce. In fact research shows that more

than half of us would be happy to reduce our energy use, avoid using cars or try to minimise food waste. It’s not just about helping tackle climate change - simple steps can also save us money, make us feel healthier and contribute to our local economy too. They don’t have to make life more difficult, as some sceptics would have us believe. I want to make sure that everyone has the right information at their fingertips to make informed choices. As the Government considers its response to the CCC and sets out policies to reach net zero, I want to ensure that we can make informed choices, by encouraging businesses to provide relevant information, transparently setting out where their products come from, how they got here, and their impact on the environment. For example, in addition to improvements to country of origin labelling, supermarkets could show how beef or lamb was reared, for example 100% grass fed. More than half of people say they would spend more on a sustainable product, but knowing what to choose isn’t always made easy. Information is power, and labelling has an important role to play.

Leaving the EU gives us the opportunity to reassess what information we expect businesses to provide on labels, as it previously fell under their jurisdiction. One of the most debated examples of this is plastic packaging, and making sure it’s clear what is recyclable, biodegradable and compostable. At the moment there is no legal definition for these terms, and a recent study by the University of Plymouth found that so-called ‘biodegradable’ shopping bags could still hold a load of shopping after three years in the marine environment. This can’t be right. If consumers are making the switch to buy supposedly more sustainable products, even at an increased price, then they must have confidence in what they are purchasing. In Parliament I set the challenge for every MP to take on the 10 Pledges, as leaders of their communities to encourage everyone who wants to play their part to make a difference. However, I know that we can’t expect anyone to do this without knowing how, and our job as policymakers is to give them those informed choices. It’s time to step up to the greatest challenge that we will face in our lifetimes to tackle climate change - internationally we can lead the world forward, nationally we must set a net zero target to end our contribution to global emissions, and individually we should empower people to make more environmentally friendly choices.

• Plant up containers and hanging baskets now that the risk of frost has gone. • Plant out bedding. Now there are no risks of frost • Lift and divide clumps of crowded bulbs • Keep newly planted trees and shrubs well-watered until they establish, that means all of this summer. • Pinch out the centres of plants before they go leggy, particularly plants like fuchsias and hanging baskets plants • When sweet peas start to flower, keep picking them to encourage more flowers • Dead head old flowers to encourage new flowers • Cut away old bulb foliage as soon as it has died down • Stake any tall flowers like poppies and delphiniums to stop them being blown over in the wind • Pinch out any side shoots on tomato plants and feed with a good tomato feed when the first truss is forming • Harvest salad crops regularly and re-sow every 2 weeks to keep a continuity of supply
• Harvest new potatoes. These are normally ready about 10 weeks after planting • You still have time to plant runner beans in early June, ideally planted straight into the ground • Prune plum and cherry trees. • Make sure the greenhouse is vented on warm days. • Check plants daily in the greenhouse for water and water if required. They dry out very quickly in a greenhouse • Trim back hardy Geraniums when the finish flowering to encourage new growth and more flowers • Damp down your greenhouse on hot days. This will increase humidity and help deter red spider mite • If we have a long spell of dry weather, set the lawn mower higher to reduce the stress on the grass • Water pots and baskets regularly, even if we have had rain they may well still need watering • Keep on top of the weeding, they grow quick this time of year • Keep bird baths topped up with fresh, clean water
