NOVEMBER WORRIES At this time of year we expect lots of enquires into helping with noise fears and phobias. Sadly the “firework season” does seem to get longer every year and extend until and even beyond new year. There are some useful bits of advice that we wanted to share here and also some useful products and medications available. It’s a tough subject to cover in any detail in this article but please do not hesitate to contact us for more information or advice. We are, as ever, passionate about happy and healthy pets and this includes minimising their fear and discomfort wherever we can. Matt Thomas BVSc BSc MRCVS
With Halloween and Bonfire Night looming it is that time of year where the anxiety of our pets tends to come to the forefront of our minds. Anxiety can be caused by many things in our pets, but noise fears and phobias are all quite common, especially amongst breeds known for their sensitivity to noise, such as border collies. As owners, the difference between a minor fear or a full blown phobia, or somewhere in between, must effect the approach we take. If it is the more extreme case, it might be best discussing it with a vet, as prescription medications are often required to help. In less serious cases there are several “over the counter” medications available to help, such as Calmex or Adaptil, but again discuss these with your vet nurse to learn more.

If pets come to us when they are scared, then calmly sitting with them and gently stroking them can be helpful. and it really helps to keep this behaviour low key and as calm as possible.
Scared or anxious pets do tend to hide away in a “safe place” and this is a natural response. Firstly it is important to ensure your pet has a safe hiding place, such as a covered over crate or under the bed. Where pets choose to exhibit this behaviour, they are best left to do so. Attempting to coax them out or entering their safe place is likely to increase their anxiety levels. Pulling curtains and turning up the TV can certainly help hide the bangs and flashes of fireworks and other loud external noises. Reassurance of scared pets is a commonly misunderstood concept. Doing this in an instinctively human way can often appear to our pets that we are also scared, as well as

Handmade Advent Calendar Make your own handmade advent calendar to add that little bit of magic on the run-up to Xmas. You’ll need: A birch rod with small eyelets in it, Felt Xmas fabric, Sparkly yarn & Bells Anything you like, it’s personal to you! 1. Cut your felt or fabric into 24 rectangles. We used 3” x 6” but the size is up to you. Fold it in half 2. Either use a sewing machine or hand sew to sew the two sides up, leaving the top open, so you create a pocket. 3. Use your sparkly yarn and accessories to decorate tie off the tops of the pockets. Use bows so you can open the pockets when you need to put your advent gifts in. 4. Using coloured yarn, in varying lengths, push through the top of the pocket at the back and knot it off so it doesn’t fall off. Then tie the other end to the the eyelets on the birch stick, making sure the pockets hang at different lengths.
5. You can add numbers to each pocket if you like but there’s one pocket for each day of December up to Xmas Eve.
Tip:
If you use plain cotton fabric and fabric pens, let the kiddies design their own pockets!

Why wont my dog settle, they have more than enough exercise!!
W
e are all aware that dogs need daily exercise and of course some breeds need more than others. There are however some dogs, that, no matter how much you walk them or throw balls for, simply wont settle. Have you ever considered the fact that you just might be giving them too much exercise!!
of physical and mental exercise can lead to stress and unacceptable behaviours like destruction, whining, rushing around and attention seeking. In the worst cases, dogs like these end their days in rescue centres. Obviously, all dogs get stressed and over-excited sometimes but it’s about teaching them to cope with these times and how to relax after stressful episodes. Every dog has its own character and only a close study of their body language and behaviour can tell you if your dog would benefit from less exercise and learning to relax, but the following questions might give you an indication.
Adolescent, hyper, over-excitable and active dogs can sometimes be over-exercised as they are often the most difficult to live with and the common thought is that the dog needs more exercise to release this energy and help it to “calm down”. In fact, what can happen is that the dog produces more and more adrenaline and cortisol the more high-energy exercise it has, which can make the dog’s mental state more out of control and unsettled. More exercise may help for a while, but the dog soon returns to its hyperactive state and will need even more exercise to compensate. Intellectual games can help to stimulate your dog without over-excitement. Ian Dunbar, a world-renowned behaviourist, vet and trainer, says that 10 minutes of an intellectual game like hide and seek is the equivalent of an hour’s walking in terms of mental exercise. Games like ‘Find the Treat’ in cups or around the house are great, hide and seek with you as the reward, snuffle mats, ‘licky mats’, all help create mental stimulation. More importantly however It is vital to a dog’s mind to learn that sometimes they can just lie around and do nothing. Dogs sleep, on average, about 14 hours a day, so doing little shouldn’t be too difficult for them but for some dogs, we have to teach them how to settle. The wrong balance
1. Does your dog rarely lie down at home, always on their toes and constantly moving every time you move? 2. Does your dog chew unsuitable things when left alone or if you aren’t paying enough attention to them? 3. Does your dog bark for attention at you and/ or at other dogs/people when out on lead? 4. Does your dog have a sensitive stomach and/ or diarrhoea often? 5. Does your dog sometimes seem “stubborn” and try to encourage play when you are giving them instruction? 6. Does your dog bother you to play constantly? 7. Does your dog never seem to wear out? 8. Does your dog sometimes not sleep all night and/or wake you in the night? 9. Does your dog get rowdy with other dogs and play rough a lot of the time? 10. Does your dog take a long time to calm down when guests visit? You may find yourself answering yes to more of these questions than not, if this is the case, you may well wish to consider teaching your dog to settle, in order that they can learn how to relax. In next months edition of the Wave, I will provide some exercise that can teach your dog how to settle.

Dogs and the Law Many people believe that the law on dogs only applies to those dogs that are unruly or potentially dangerous. Whether you own a large dog or a miniature breed, and however calm and friendly your dog is, the Dangerous Dogs Act, 1991 still applies to you. Under the Act, it’s illegal for a dog to be ‘out of control’ or to bite or attack someone. The legislation also makes it an offence if a person is worried or afraid (the term is ‘reasonable apprehension’) that a dog may bite them. So it’s important to ensure that your dog is kept under control at all times and in all places.

We may be fortunate enough to have access to our favourite foods in minutes, but our bodies remain seasonally programmed.

In my work, I see the impact of ‘disorder messages’ on people every day. In the colder, darker months, suggesting there’s something wrong with being tired, hungry and low can add guilt, shame and anxiety to already strained emotional loads. Instead, it can be helpful to set healthier expectations by following nature’s lead.

Some people experience seasonal change more keenly than others. Many of us find the winter months incredibly hard. But since we are all affected by the seasons, maybe real disorder results from trying to carry on in the middle of winter as if it’s high summer. Perhaps we could call this WIND: Winter Normality Disorder.

If we look at any other mammal in our timezone, we’re likely to find them building up layers of fat and getting lots of sleep. Squirrels aren’t lazy or greedy; they’re intuitive survivors, and so are we.

Electricity makes it possible for us to work and play at any time of day, all year round, but that doesn’t mean that we should or that we’re disordered if we don’t. It can be helpful to remember that, in evolutionary terms, we’ve had the electric light for a mere nano-second.
Emotional wellbeing in winter
Of course, needs that make us less productive: afternoon naps, a slower pace, leisurely mealtimes are hard to reconcile with modern life. Over the years, I’ve found three habits particularly helpful in preserving emotional wellbeing in the winter: gratitude, time in nature, and conversation. I’ve been practising gratitude for four years now and can’t overstate how helpful it is to notice what’s good when things feel tough. Of course, you don’t need a group to practise gratitude, but reading other people’s lists can be very heartening. The Lifetime Therapy Gratitude Practice on Facebook is a free private community you’re welcome to join. Getting outside, whatever the weather, and into a natural space if possible, provides a boost of vitamin D, a hit of endorphins and reminds us we’re part of an ecosystem full of marvels. And, when you get back to that blanket, it feels even cosier! The most important thing we can do to take care of our emotional selves at any time of year is to let someone know how we feel. This is getting easier, but words like ‘disorder’ still have stigma’s sting.
