Paper Quilling 1. You’ll need either pre-cut quilling strips or you could recycle an old book or magazine by cutting into strips. You can cut different widths to create different effects. You’ll also need a quilling tool. 2. Insert the paper strip into the slot at the end of the quilling tool and twirl your fingers to make a tightly wound coil of paper. You can add another strip to the end with a blob of glue to make different sized coils. When you have the size you want, finish off with a dab of glue to secure the end, then slip the coil off the end of the quilling tool. Repeat to make a number of either same size or different sized coils. 3. If covering a frame, for example, do the outside edges first and secure the quills with a strong glue. Then, build up from the edges by glueing the base of the quill and the side so that they stick to the frame and to the other quills. Continue until the item is covered. 4. If you have little gaps, fill in with smaller quills. Different thickness quills produce different textures. You can use different colours to produce different effects. 5. Apply a couple of coats of Mod Podge sealer to protect the quills. It’s a truly relaxing and absorbing hobby that anyone will enjoy!

Rosemullion Pet Page February is Pet Dental Health Month! So we thought it might be useful to shed some light on proper oral health care for your pets. Did you know Dental disease is the most common condition in adult cats and dogs? It affects 4 out of 5 dogs over the age of 3 years!

Pet Dental Health

D

ental disease occurs when the natural bacteria present within an animals mouth sticks to the surface of your pets teeth, which forms a layer of plaque. If this plaque is allowed to build up on the teeth it will eventually form a hard brown coating known as tartar. The bacteria within plaque and tartar can attack the gums and cause inflammation of the gum tissue, known as gingivitis, which can then lead to damage of the supporting structures of the teeth (periodontitis), and eventually resulting in tooth loss. Tartar can only be removed by a veterinary surgeon using specialised veterinary dental equipment.

will need a suitable size toothbrush for your pet depending on their breed and size, and appropriate pet-friendly toothpaste – human toothpaste contains Fluoride which is unsuitable for your pet due to potential toxicity problems. Most veterinary dental specialists and general practitioners don't recommend the use of human toothpastes in pets. Now, we know that brushing your pet’s teeth isn’t always the easiest thing to do. So here’s a little guide to help you get started and eventually become a pro-brusher! Start by gently handling your pet’s mouth daily and praise good behaviour. Once your pet is happy being handled in this way, you can try introducing toothpaste on your finger or using a finger brush – allowing them to lick/ chew at their leisure. When your pet is comfortable, hold the mouth closed with one hand and gently lift the lips to expose the teeth. Slide the toothbrush along the teeth right to the back of the mouth – it is best to start with the back teeth and introduce brushing to the front teeth as your pet’s confidence grows. Start with a few minutes at least 3 times a week and gradually increase the length of time spent on each area of the mouth.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

It is often difficult to spot the signs of dental disease, but checking your pet’s mouth regularly will definitely help. Some signs to look out for include: 1. Bad Breath (which is NOT normal for dogs, despite common belief) 2. Changes in Behaviour 3. Bleeding Gums 4. Excessive Salivation 5. Difficulty Eating 6. Reluctance or Aggression when Touched Around the Mouth

BRUSHING TEETH

Ideally, your pet’s teeth need to be brushed at least 3 times a week. This is by far the best way to keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy. It is best to slowly introduce brushing at a young age; however it is never too late to start! You

16 FALMOUTH Wave

As your pet becomes more used to the brushing procedure, you can gently pull the top jaw upwards to open the mouth allowing you to clean the inner surfaces of the teeth, gradually increasing the number of teeth you brush each time. Make sure you praise your pet as you are cleaning, give them a treat and take a break if they become resistant – remember to always keep it positive!

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

It is important to give your pet toys that are suitable for animals; dental chews and toys

to advertise call Ashley on 07800 986216

can be beneficial in helping with dental care. You should avoid use of bones, antlers, sticks, stones and other hard objects/toys as they can damage your pet’s teeth and gums. Using regular preventative methods will help to reduce the risk of oral disease and, therefore decrease the likelihood of your pet requiring any veterinary dental treatment. There are several different types of dental chews available which help prevent plaque by their shape and the chewing action needed.

Diet and Food can also play a huge role in the oral health of your pets. Dry food is the best kind for your pet’s teeth as the mechanical action of chewing helps to strengthen the structures supporting the teeth and aids in removing plaque. Avoiding wet food will make a big difference to your pet’s dental health as it is much higher in sugar and much like in humans, can cause decay. Similarly, there are products such as Hexarinse that act as a mouth wash for your pet and can be used after your pet has eaten to help reduce bacterial build up within their mouth. Other products can be added to your pet’s water daily to help prevent plaque build up and bad breath which is especially useful for pets that aren’t a fan of having their teeth cleaned. Alternatively, an item such as Plaque-Off, which is a natural seaweed-based food supplement, can be used alongside brushing to help loosen plaque, making it easier to remove whilst brushing.

ne sign that your tyres need changing is noticing a deterioration in performance. For example, your car does not handle or grip the road as well in poor weather conditions as it normally does, or it takes longer to stop when you apply the brakes. The fact that tyres wear

gradually can make it difficult to identify the reduction in performance, so it’s best to have them checked regularly and preferably by an expert. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that the tread on your tyres is not worn beyond the legal minimum limit of 1.6 millimetres.

W

ho can possibly ignore someone whose mission is to provide fresh, affordable, and locally grown produce to the people of Cornwall, in order to maintain a low carbon footprint and help everyone live better and longer lives.

can’t possibly be, can it?

Aaron has lived in Falmouth, Cornwall for most of his life and went to college to study horticulture, both general and organic. Now, as a qualified horticulturist, alongside his passion for growing plants, has started his own business.

For those of you new to this concept, microgreens are a vegetable green, harvested after sprouting as shoots and can be used as a visual component or ingredient and can often been found in fine dining restaurants. Smaller than baby greens, evidence suggests that microgreens may contain high concentrations of nutrients compared with mature vegetables and herbs. Due to their high antioxidant content, these greens are considered both a functional food but also a food that promotes good health and can prevent disease.

He expanded his working knowledge to cultivate and sell microgreens. He wants everyone he encounters, to understand the benefits of these incredible vegetables.

However Aaron doesn’t stop there, in his quest to promote good health and sustainability through his business He utilises worm castings and seaweed from local beaches to make a seaweed extract

plus volcanic dust to fertilize the reused soil, enabling him to reuse the soil over again to help lower wastage. He grows everything in an indoor controlled environment and by doing this he is able to keep his produce under eco-friendly lighting to maintain a very low carbon footprint. All of Aaron’s products are available on line at very affordable prices.

FILMREVIEW

Sarah

Newton's News An estimated 300,000 people lose their job every year because of a mental health problem. Many wanted to and could have remained in employment had they been given the right support. I recently spoke at a CBI event to welcome the launch of Front of Mind, their new good practice guidance which helps employers improve health and wellbeing in the workplace. I also helped launch the free, online CIPD People Managers Guide to Mental Health. People with mental health conditions can make a valuable contribution in the workplace. We need real cultural change in every local workplace to prevent valued colleagues leaving a job they love because of mental health problems. For employers this can feel daunting. The mental health charity, Mind, found that while employers want to make mental health a priority, a third don’t know where to go for information or guidance. That’s exactly why practical resources like Front of Mind are so important. Highlighting examples from UK employers that are already leading the way, the guidance shows that successful businesses are taking key three steps: prioritising health and wellbeing from the top, targeting action towards early interventions and embedding good health and wellbeing in workplace culture. Not only does Front of Mind offer practical tips for employers, it also demonstrates the business case for making progress on workplace mental health. While the human suffering of losing a job is well understood, the impact of mental health issues for UK employers is less well known, costing between £33 billion and £42 billion every year. Clearly, making mental health a priority in the workplace is not just the right thing to do – it also makes good business sense. We don’t expect employers to do this on their own. Government has an important role to play in supporting people with a mental health condition. We’ve made good progress, with a range of support on offer. NHS spending on mental health increased to a record £11.86 billion last year, with a further investment of £1 billion by 2020/21. While there is much more to do, we have seen more investment in mental health services here, including specialist perinatal mental services and those for young people. Recruitment has started for staff at the new children and adolescent residential mental health centre, Sowenna in Bodmin. On employment support, the DWP is investing £115 million in partnership with the NHS, more than doubling the number of Employment Advisers in Improving Access to Psychological Therapies Services. Our new Work and Health

A PRIVATE WAR

Programme is investing £500 million in tailored employment support, delivered by PLUSS in Cornwall it is helping disabled people and those with health conditions into a job. And our Access to Work scheme has a specialised mental health support service which has supported over 12,000 people. More than 90% of people who have used the service were still in their job after six months. The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has secured £465,000 of Government funding to help local businesses recruit and retain people with disabilities and long-term health conditions. The Cornwall Work and Health Beacon Project is the first of its kind in the UK and aims to widen the pool of talent and experience available to employers, creating opportunities for local people and helping to tackle skills shortages. The project will work with businesses to co-create solutions and build their confidence to employ and retain people with disabilities and long-term health conditions, and ensure they have the right support and information available to them. In Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly there are almost 50,000 working age people whose day-to-day activities are limited by a long-term illness or disability. This is over 15% of the working age population, and well above the national average. The positive links between work and health are well proven and the Government is committed to supporting more disabled people into work. The LEP has already done some excellent work in this area and I want to encourage all local senior managers and business leaders to make a real, tangible commitment to improving workplace culture around mental health. This isn’t an issue for other businesses to deal with, or something we can leave HR to worry about. The leaders of any organisation are pivotal in shaping its culture and exemplary behaviour has to start at the top. My vision is of a society where everyone has the opportunity to fulfil their potential and no one loses their job because of poor mental health. It’s now time for every leader in every sector to take responsibility for creating an environment in which people feel able to talk about their mental health condition and get the help they need to thrive at work.

Slow cooker chicken casserole Treat the family to this wholesome chicken casserole that delivers comfort while being low-fat. And you can let a slow cooker do most of the work.

Method

1. Heat a knob of butter and 1/2 tbsp rapeseed or olive oil in a large frying pan, cook 1

finely chopped large onion for 8-10 mins until softened and starting to caramelise.

What can be more comforting on a cold night than a delicious casserole cooked all day in the slow cooker? Here’s a couple of my favourites

2. Meanwhile, put 1 1/2 tbsp flour and a little

salt and pepper in a bowl and toss 650g boneless, skinless chicken thigh fillets in it.

3. Add 3 crushed garlic cloves and the

chicken to the pan and cook for 4-5 mins more until the chicken is starting to brown.

Slow cooker beef stew

Cook beef stew in a slow cooker for really tender meat. Add button mushrooms or smoked paprika for extra flavour – it will be an instant family favourite

Method

1. Fry the onion and celery in 1 tbsp oil over a low heat until they start to soften – about 5 mins. Add the carrots, bay and thyme, fry for 2 mins, stir in the purée and Worcestershire sauce, add 600ml boiling water, stir and tip everything into a slow cooker. Crumble over the stock cubes or add the stock pots and stir, then season with pepper (don’t add salt as the stock may be salty). 2. Clean out the frying pan and fry the beef in the remaining oil in batches until it is well browned, then tip each batch into the slow cooker. Cook on low for 8-10 hrs, or on high for 4 hrs. 3. If you want to thicken the gravy, mix the corn our with a splash of cold water to make a paste, then stir in 2 tbsp of the liquid from the slow cooker. Tip back into the slow cooker, stir and cook for a further 30 mins on high. Stir in the parsley and season again to taste. Serve with mash, if you like. Leave to cool before freezing.
