CHRISTMAS TEMPTING TOXICITIES Chocolate: The ingestion of chocolate - particularly dark chocolate - can make your pet very ill. If sufficient amounts are ingested, vomiting and seizures can result, so be careful when hanging chocolates on the Christmas tree; make sure you put them on the higher branches only.
Christmas is nearly here! An exciting time for all members of the family, including our furry friends. While we are all looking forwards to the decorations, food and gifts it is important to remember there are a number of potential risks to our much loved pets. Jake has taken the lead this month in writing this article outlining some of the hazards to watch for. Whilst we hope that you and your families enjoy a very happy and eventfree Christmas, we remain available 24 hours a day for emergencies should you wish to contact us for advice or treatment. If you do think your pet has eaten something it shouldn’t have, don’t mull it over; please contact us as soon as you can for advice. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

elebrating Christmas is going to be different, so we have decided to do something different ourselves. To show our appreciation to the community we have decided that with the help of our staff we will choose twelve local charities to support over the Twelve Days of Christmas. They will all receive a minimum of £100 each. We will announce these 1st December on our respective Facebook pages so please take the time to take a look at these great charities, check the work they do, spread the message and show them the support they so deserve. Everybody will have been affected in some way. It really has been a testing time for the NHS and many supporting charities. So many people have really suffered during this period both physically and mentally. There are those that will have lost loved ones. So far at Trident and A1 we have managed to weather the storm. It has taken careful

planning and a massive team effort to reach this point and all this has happened in the year that marks 21 years of trading for both businesses. It certainly changed our plans for celebrating.
At the time of writing this, a vaccine with a high success rate has just been announced, let’s hope it will prove to be the start of better days. So, celebrating our 21st years and now looking to Christmas, it really isn’t what we hoped for. Needless to say, it has been the invaluable support of our customers that has helped us reach this milestone and for that we thank you!

Santas on the Run goes Freestyle!

hildren’s Hospice South West’s (CHSW) annual Santas on the Run event is back but not as you know it! Taking place over the weekend of the 11-13 December, supporters will be able to choose their distance, route and their festive dress. CHSW’s festive fundraiser usually takes place at Eden each year but the local children’s charity has taken the decision to hold it virtually this Christmas due to the pandemic.

Kiley Pearce, Events Fundraiser from CHSW, said: “This year, Santas on the Run is going freestyle! Whilst we can’t all come together at Eden, together we can still spread some joy and laughter and we’d encourage everyone to go crackers with their festive fundraising! Whether you twinkle in tinsel or rock it like Rudolph, you can get creative with your costume and complete a distance of your choice, your way.” CHSW’s Santas on the Run has taken place at Eden since 2015 and before that was held in St Austell town centre. Over the years it’s seen thousands of people join together raising vital funds for CHSW and it’s Little Harbour children’s hospice in St Austell. Together with community partner Whirlwind Sports, CHSW is asking this year’s participants to raise sponsorship or make a

The route continu along the coast to Mullio Cove via the cannon tha was found in the bay dur Victorian times. A Christmas treat the kids will enjoy helping to make, with an unusual minty filling! 4. To make the icing, melt the butter and
METHOD
1. Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Butter and line a 23 x 32cm Swiss roll tin with baking parchment. Beat the eggs and golden caster sugar together with an electric whisk for about 8 mins until thick and creamy. 2. Mix the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder together, then sift onto the egg mixture. Fold in very carefully, then pour into the tin. Tip the tin from side to side to spread the mixture into the corners. Bake for 10 mins. 3. Lay a sheet of baking parchment on a work surface. When the cake is ready, tip it onto the parchment, peel off the lining paper, then roll the cake up from its longest edge with the paper inside. Leave to cool.

Lift the log on to a plate, then arrange the slice on the side with the diagonal cut against the cake to make a branch. Spread the icing over the log and branch (don’t cover the ends), then use a fork to mark the icing to give the effect of tree bark. Scatter with unsifted icing sugar to resemble snow, and decorate with holly.

50g butter, plus extra for the tin 140g dark chocolate , broken into squares 1 tbsp golden syrup 284ml pot double cream 200g icing sugar, sifted 2-3 extra strong mints, crushed (optional) icing sugar and holly sprigs to decorate - ensure you remove the berries before serving 24 FALMOUTH Wave
Vegan Mince Pies
INGREDIENTS 225g plain flour, plus extra for dusting ¼ tsp salt 65g white vegetable fat, cubed 65g dairy-free sunflower spread 2 tbsp maple syrup 2 tbsp dairy-free milk, such as soya or almond 411g jar mincemeat (vegan) icing sugar, for dusting 1. For the pastry, combine the flour and salt in a bowl. Add the vegetable fat and margarine and rub together until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. 2. Mix in 1 tbsp maple syrup and 1 tbsp dairyfree milk until the mixture comes together in large lumps, then bring together with your hands and knead gently in the bowl to make a smooth dough. Cover and leave to rest for 20 mins. 3. Preheat the oven to gas 6, 200°C, fan 180°C. Roll the pastry out on a floured surface to the thickness of a pound coin. Cut out 12 x 8cm rounds using a plain or crinkle-edge cutter and gently press into a 12-hole tin. 4. Spoon 1 tbsp mincemeat into each pastry base. Re-roll the pastry trimmings and cut out 12 x 6cm assorted festive shapes then use to top the pies. 5. Mix the remaining maple syrup and dairyfree milk together and brush over the pastry shapes to glaze. Bake for 25 mins until lightly golden. Leave to cool for 10 mins before carefully removing from the tins and transferring to a wire rack. Dust with icing sugar and serve warm or at room temperature. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Cut out diseased or damaged growth, tie in any new shoots and cut back old flowering side shoots to about one third of their length. • Leave old flower heads on Hydrangeas. They will help to protect the new buds from frost damage • Collect up any remaining fallen leaves • Check climber supports are sound and that the plants are tied in properly to help prevent wind damage • Remove yellow leaves from winter brassicas. They are no help to the plant but may harbour diseases
• Apple and Pear trees need pruning in the winter so this job can be done. Don’t prune Plum’s Cherries, Apricots, and Peaches until the summer • Plant Raspberry canes • Prune grape vines • The bare root fruit season is now in full swing so now is the time for buying and planting your new fruit trees and bushes • Lift and divide Rhubarb crowns. Sections taken from around the outside of the old crown will do better than from the centre • Apply well rooted manure to empty beds and boarders
