Falmouth Week is a major attraction for locals and visitors alike. With its origins as a local sailing the week is an opportunity for sailors and landlubbers to enjoy the many daytime and evening eve

he 10-day event is a major attraction for locals and visitors alike with fleet racing for yachts and dayboats as well as a jam-packed schedule of day and night shoreside entertainment. Daytime activities include a large 40-foot Victorian carousel on The Moor, The Action Sports Tour, RNLI Fun Day, Street Science talks by Exeter University, Comic and Movie Fest, Dragon Boat racing and plenty of street performances and music acts throughout the town! As Falmouth Week continues into the evening, a number of music acts have already been announced, thanks to Southwest Bars and Events, with tickets available to purchase online now via seetickets.com/tour/falmouth-week. THE MOOR Giant Led Screen 6th – 15th August FREE Returning for Falmouth Week 2021! Featuring interactive electronic games for up to 30 players. event! The evening will take place down at The Waterfront (Church Steet Car Park) and will kick start from 7.30pm. Get ready for a funky evening of carnival fun! The fantastic air show takes place on the seafront every year, so you can head down to the beach and enjoy the perfect location to view their display. Vantage points to witness the performance include Pendennis Point, Cliff Road, Castle Beach, Gyllyngvase Beach and Swanpool Beach. The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show The Waterfront - Church Street Car Park The legendary actor, host and broadcaster Craig Charles is

From Robot Wars to Red Dwarf, Craig has now grounded himself as a Funk & Soul icon after 10 years of broadcasting on BBC 6 Music with their primetime Saturday night show. A night not to be missed! RNLI FUN DAY Custom House Quay Head down to Custom House Quay to discover a family fun day featuring some of Falmouth’s best loved local charities like RNLI, the Seal Sanctuary, Cornwall Wildlife Trust and more including some SoapBox Science. The fun continues in the evening with a performance of traditional Cornish sea shanties in aid of Falmouth lifeboat. Street Science Instead of Science in the Square, this year we’re doing Street Science! Speakers from the University of Exeter will be giving talks throughout the day, about topics including smart solar powered windows, climate change, plastic pollution, animal behaviour and more. Talks will take place on the hour from 10am-4pm on Wednesday 11 August on Arwenack Street, Falmouth.There will also be a rock pooling session at Castle Beach at 2:30pm on Wednesday 11 August. THURSDAY 12TH Falmouth Market The Moor The Moor in Falmouth has been a market space for hundreds of years, and that tradition is still alive today. There will be a selection of market stalls available for people to come and browse clothing, indulge in a variety of craft and art stalls, and try our local food traders. The market will run for the duration of Falmouth Week. Ska Night Church Steet Car Park Get your boots on, it’s time to party Bad Manners style. From 7.30pm, Bad Manners will be rocking their way into Falmouth for ska night! Featuring vocalist Buster Bloodvessel, Bad Manners were at the forefront of the ska revival movement in England in the late ’70s. They quickly became the novelty
favourites of the fad through their bald, enormous-bodied frontman’s silly on-stage antics, earning early exposure through 2-Tone Records, package tours and an appearance in the live documentary Dance Craze. FRIDAY 13TH Falmouth Week Firreworks (delayed until the Saturday at 10pm if the weather is poor on the Friday). Watch the fireworks illuminate the inner harbour and skyline. Position yourself at one of the many vantage points through the town and enjoy this spectacular show! Coming from a background that cultivated shame around difficult feelings, I find this a cause for great celebration and one of lockdown’s silver linings.

When it comes to anxiety, you’re in charge Anxiety is high on the list of feelings we see people wrestling with at Lifetime. We encourage people to get to know their anxiety and to ask it to step down when it isn’t appropriate. Anxiety is a bit like the loving dog who warns us that the vicious postman is on the loose: it needs our guidance. Anxiety will keep us safe from wolves that are no longer there, but it’ll also put us in danger of never leaving the house - just in case. Anxiety is a fascinating emotion. We’re currently working on a collaborative project with local artists that explores the nuances of this one feeling, and I think the fact that we’ve already got more than fifty words for how ‘anxious’ feels shows how unmechanical we humans are, and how unrealistic our expectations of ourselves can be. Cultivate emotional wellbeing, mental health is something else As a counsellor, I see the power words have to shape perception and reality every day, and I try to choose mine with care. You may find it surprising that we don’t talk about mental health anymore at Lifetime, despite being one of the southwest’s leading providers of services that would definitely be put in that category. I just don’t think the term is very accurate or helpful. The vast majority of experiences we describe as “mental health issues” are not in our minds at all - that’s just where emotional awareness happens. Medication can’t resolve emotional pain, it can only numb our awareness of it. When we talk about mental health, we’re really talking about emotional wellbeing. This is important because it leads us to ask more useful questions: What is this emotion? What is it like? Is it enabling or disabling? What made me feel this way? Can I change it? If not, can I accept it? Those last two questions are truly transformative. But more on

Woof, woof, woof: What is it Fido?
arking can signify many moods or states. Obviously it’s a warning, but it’s also a ‘come on!’, and something done in the sheer excitement of the moment. You probably already know your own dog’s various barks... ‘Let me in’, ‘there’s something in the garden’, ‘there’s someone at the door’, or ‘I want to play’. Here are a few examples of commonly heard barks and what they may mean: Barking in rapid strings of three or four with pauses in between, midrange pitch – It’s a fairly indefinite alerting call. It means the dog senses something is there, but it is not yet identified or close enough to actually be a threat. The dog suspects there might be a problem or an intruder, and someone should look into it.
Rapid barking, midrange pitch – This is the basic alarm bark. It raises the alarm and prepares for action. It means someone is coming. The higher rate of barking means the dog is more aroused and feels the potential threat or visitor is closer. Barking still continuous but a little slower and lower pitch – The lowering of the pitch suggests the threat is close. A prolonged string of barks with a moderate to long interval between each bark – This sounds like ‘woof ’ – pause – ‘woof ’ – pause – ‘woof ’ – pause. This means ‘is anybody there?’ It’s a loneliness call for companionship, a common response to confinement or being left alone for a long time. If the stress level is great enough, the bark can become a high pitched yelp. Staffordshire Bull
Terriers are big babies and can often be heard making a ridiculous bark crossed with a whine and a cry all in one.
One or two sharp short barks of high or midrange pitch – This is a typical greeting sound and it usually replaces the alarm bark once they recognise the person as friendly. Visitors are often greeted with a bark, and it simply means ‘hello there!’ Single sharp short bark, lower to midrange pitch – You will often hear this sound when a mother is disciplining her pups, or if an adult dog is putting a rude and boisterous pup in its place at the park. It means ‘stop that!’ Single sharp short bark, higher pitch – This is the sound of surprise. If it’s repeated two or three times it starts to mean ‘come look at this’ and the pitch means the bark is driven by curiosity. With a subtle change to delivery so that it is not quite so short and sharp, but has a more deliberate delivery, now it means ‘come here’, and has more of a commanding nature about it. The delayed stutter bark – Imagine a dog’s bark as ‘ruff !’ Now if we hear one that sounds like ‘arr-ruff !’ this is the classic play bark, usually accompanied by a play bow. Barking alone is not always indicative of the way the dog is feeling, so it is best to combine this with contextualising the bark alongside the dog’s body language and the circumstances in which the bark is given.

Myth Busters - You can’t teach an old dog new tricks! Providing your dog has no physical limitations or cognitive issues such as dementia, there is little reason why you cannot teach an old hand some new tricks or even address any niggling behavioural issues they may have. Using a positive reinforcement process such as clicker training can help spring new life into your ageing hound, so don’t give up on them. Indeed, they can and will probably relish enjoying some new tricks.

Vegan chickpea curry jacket potatoes
Get some protein into a vegan diet with this tasty chickpea curry jacket. Itʻs an easy midweek meal, or filling lunch that packs a lot of flavour
INGREDIENTS
4 sweet potatoes 1 tbsp coconut oil 1 ½ tsp cumin seeds 1 large onion, diced 2 garlic cloves, crushed thumb-sized piece ginger, finely
grated 1 green chilli, finely chopped 1 tsp garam masala 1 tsp ground coriander ½ tsp turmeric 2 tbsp tikka masala paste
METHOD
1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Prick the sweet potatoes all over with a fork, then put on a baking tray and roast in the oven for 45 mins or until tender when pierced with a knife. 2. Meanwhile, melt the coconut oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and fry for 1 min until fragrant, then add the onion and fry for 7-10 mins until softened. 3. Put the garlic, ginger and green chilli into the pan, and cook for 2-3 mins. Add the spices

and tikka masala paste and cook for a further 2 mins until fragrant, then tip in the tomatoes. Bring to a simmer, then tip in the chickpeas and cook for a further 20 mins until thickened. Season. 4. Put the roasted sweet potatoes on four plates and cut open lengthways. Spoon over the chickpea curry and squeeze over the lemon wedges. Season, then scatter with coriander before serving.

1. Top up ponds and bird baths regularly. 2. Water fruit and veg plants daily. 3. Prune all summer flowering shrubs once the blooms are finished. 4. Keep on top of weeds as they compete with your crops for nutrients and water. 5. Ensure top-heavy dahlias are staked to prevent damage 6. Water evergreen shrubs like camellias and rhododendrons thoroughly this month to make sure that next year's buds develop well. 7. Keep patio container plants well watered and feed with a liquid fertiliser every fortnight. 8. Stake tall or top-heavy dahlias and lilies to prevent wind and rain damage. 9. Dead-head lilies for a better flower display next year. 10. Dead-head annual bedding plants and perennials to encourage them to flower into the autumn and stop them self-seeding. 11. Cut back faded perennials to keep borders tidy. 12. As penstemon flowers fade, cut them back to just above a leaf to encourage more flowers. 13. Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves you can harvest before the frost.
14. Prune wisteria after flowering by removing all the whippy side-shoots from the main branch framework to about 20cm from their base (about five leaves from the main stem). 15. Trim any lavender plants after they've finished flowering to keep them compact. 16. Collect ripened seeds and store them for next year. Leaving some seed heads in place can be attractive and allows the plant to self-seed in the surrounding soil. 17. Mow meadows now to help scatter established wildflower seeds. 18. Take cuttings of your favourite tender perennials such as pelargoniums and fuchsia to propagate them for next year. 19. Finish dividing clumps of bearded Iris now so they have time to form roots and flower buds for next year before the cold weather arrives. 20. Prune climbing roses and rambling roses once they've finished flowering (unless they’re repeat-flowerers in which case leave them). 21. Spray ground elder (and other perennial weeds) with a glyphosate-based weedkiller, the plants now have plenty of leaf surface area with which to absorb it.
