COOL FOR THE SUMMER
We all love a summer haircut but while it may seem logical to cut your pet's coat short in the summer months, try to resist the urge. If hair— even long hair—is brushed and not matted, it provides better circulation and helps regulate body temperature!
Parasite control is particularly important at this time of year. We would always recommend using flea treatment year-round to help prevent any unwanted guests – most veterinary flea products treat against lice and mites as well as fleas, some even cover you for ticks and worms too. It is important to understand what products work best for you and your pet, depending on their size, age and lifestyle. Tick cover is especially vital, particularly if your dog or cat tends to roam in tall grasses or woodland areas where they are more likely to come into contact with plants and wild animal habitats. Most pets find fleas itchy and irritating but for some they are a much bigger problem. Some animals suffer from Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) – a skin irritation caused by flea bites (or more specifically the flea’s saliva). A pet that is allergic to flea bites will have a skin reaction every time they are bitten which causes intense itching and inflammation of the skin. They are likely to lick, bite and scratch themselves causing their skin to become red raw and open to infection. For these pets, keeping on top of their regular flea treatment can make a big difference. Remember, only 5% of a flea infestation is on
Most dog owners know not to walk your dog during the hottest part of the day, which is usually between 11.00am and 4.00pm. This is especially important for dogs with short snouts, such as bulldogs, who can’t pant as efficiently in humid weather due to their narrowed nostrils and windpipes. It is also essential to avoid painful burns to your dog’s paw pads. Remember the 5 Second Rule – place the back of your hand on the ground, if you can’t hold it there for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog! Now we all know what it’s like when you get a bit carried away and spend too much time frolicking in the sunshine, but do you know how to spot heatstroke in your pets? If your pet shows signs of heat stress—heavy panting, dry or bright red gums, thick drool, vomiting, diarrhea, or wobbly legs—don’t place them in ice cold water, which can put them into shock. Instead, move them to a cool place, drape a damp towel over their body, wetting the cloth frequently, and get them to the vet as soon as you possibly can. A lot of dogs love a good swim in the warmer weather to help cool off. Just remember to check that the water they are swimming in is safe and free from any harmful algae or toxins before letting your dog go for a dip.

Most of all, enjoy those crisp early morning walks and those beautiful sunset wanders along the coastal paths. What better way to enjoy the long summer evenings than spending time with your favourite furry friend?
ACT LIKE A LIFEGUARD
Never leave your dog unsupervised near an uncovered pool or expanse of water. Teach them how to get out from a pool using steps or a ramp – practice this with them 10 or more times in a row. This will help them learn where the nearest

• Camellias, Rhododendrons and Azaleas must be kept well-watered at this time of year to ensure that next year’s buds develop • Keep all pots, containers and baskets well-watered and feed them. A liquid feed once a fortnight should be sufficient • Keep dead heading bedding and perennial plants. It can be a bit of a chore but it does encourage more flowers • Trim Lavender plants once they have finished flowering. This will help to keep them compact • Cut back Herbs to encourage a fresh growth of young leaves • Prune summer flowering shrubs once they have finished flowering • Dead head Roses to encourage more flowers • Keep on top of the watering on the veggie plot • Keep Tomato plants well watered. Trim off those lower leaves and pinch out the top of the plants when there are 4-5 trusses of fruit • Pinch out the growing tips of Runner Beans to encourage more side shoots and therefore more beans. The friend’s night out in 2009, wishing Sally well for her cancer treatment, has now grown beyond belief, to this year having 1200 tickets sold out, 10 weeks before the event! This year also marks the largest event hosted by Pink Wig Events with an increased capacity from 1000-1200. The small team involved with Pink Wig Events continue to be overwhelmed

Over the years we have raised £110,000 for the chosen charities: Breast Care Team at the Royal Cornwall Hospital and Breast Cancer Now. The team continue to be committed to raise as many funds and awareness as possible. Sally¹s dream was always to turn Falmouth pink and Pink Wig Night certainly sees this happen - year on year it just gets pinker!
Once again this year the parade leaves from The Moor at 6:30pm, being led by the infamous Marine Band, Betty Stoggs and their very own Mabel Moobs! The year’s theme is a ‘breastival¹ festival and tee shirts are still
available in Bow Accessories Falmouth and Tanya¹s Courage Inspired by Sasha Charity Shops in Falmouth and Penryn. Once at the Marquee, Nate Valentino, fresh from playing in Ibiza, will as always be contributing his time free to the night. Embrace Dance Fitness will be providing the warm up and once again live music will be the fabulous band, The Strutts. The Pink Wig Team will be running 2 bars on the night - tasty pink wig cocktails and Prosecco, with all the proceeds of these going straight to the charity. If you haven¹t managed to get a ticket then come into town and support by watching the parade. In Sally¹s words ‘until we are all safe¹

Join the Pink Wig team in raising vital funds for research and awareness of breast cancer both locally for the Cornwall Breast Care Team and nationally for Breast Cancer Now. With continued support from the local community, local businesses and local media as well as the Falmouth Marine Band, Betty Stogs and Southwest Bars and Events, this fantastic ‘girls night out’ has been able to grow year on year.

Falmouth Seafront 5.45pm - 6.45pm. Important marine, traffic and visitor information will be released nearer the time.

Dragon Boat Racing: 10am onwards
Dragon boating is a fun filled, adrenaline pumping, water sports activity. Teams compete in Dragon Boats, which are large canoe-like vessels fitted with ornately carved dragon’s heads and tails. Crews of up to 16 people sit in pairs and paddle to compete in multiple timed races over distances of around 250m. As the crops in the fields are ripened and harvested, it’s a good time to think about how important our local farmers, food and drink producers are to our local environment, economy, community and wellbeing. It may surprise you that Cornwall Council’s Farm Estate is made up of more than 10,800 acres, or approximately 1.5% of Cornwall’s land area, and lets 91 farm units to tenant farmers, employing around 11,000 people. Last year the Council launched a review and inquiry into the future of the estate taking evidence from 39 witnesses and made recommendations for a new Council Farms Strategy. Cllr Martyn Alvey did a great job. Residents, farmers and businesses have recently been asked their views on the plans through a public consultation. The draft Cornwall Council Farms Strategy 2019 – 2039: Farming with Cornwall’s Nature has been developed around four key ambitions to: increase business opportunities for tenant farmers, contribute to environmental growth, provide more countryside opportunities and support people’s health and wellbeing while creating a more sustainable estate. The strategy outlines the ways in which the Farms Estate will provide more opportunities for new entrants to farming to start their careers and support them to build their businesses. It pledges to encourage tenant farmers using diversification methods by helping them develop their farm products to be more competitive. To boost environmental growth the Estate plans to give greater support to tenants in expanding wildlife habitats, protecting heritage assets, managing regenerated soils, improving water quality, planting more trees and increasing sustainable energy. It also wants to increase job and business opportunities in the countryside, encourage more people to get out into the natural world and provide supported agriculture schemes for residents and community groups to develop growing opportunities. To help businesses’ financial and environmental sustainability, the Estate will introduce the Whole Farm Plan to set out agreements between landlord and tenant on the expected performance of farms. We know that farming practices which benefit nature can also be highly productive for food production and support local ecosystems in our unique Cornish landscape. I am delighted that Cornwall Council has undertaken this important work and that the strategy recognised that their Farms Estate can act as a catalyst for positive change within the farming sector

to produce food for the nation and to play a part in the transition to low carbon agriculture which is critical if we are to tackle climate change. I am pleased that the strategy recognises the importance of enabling more people and communities to get involved with growing food and enhancing and developing new ecosystems. In addition to allotments and gardening clubs, there are many great examples of community groups such as Chyan Community Field in Penryn and the newly established Community Garden at All Saints Church in Mylor Bridge. Each provide opportunities for people to learn from each other about how to grow plants and enjoy the fruits of their labours. Each provide a beautiful haven for wildlife and humans to enjoy together. Spending time with nature is good for our health and wellbeing. While there is funding to develop existing parks and green spaces, as well as creating new ones such as the Pocket Parks Scheme and Plastic Bag Levy, it is vital that Cornwall Council helps more groups with their expertise too. Planting more trees is a great way to improve our natural environment, improve air quality and reduce carbon dioxide. The Woodland Trust makes free trees available to a wide range of organisations from schools and colleges, from nurseries to universities. Also, to community groups such as sports clubs, parish councils, the guides and scouts. Packs of trees are available for a range of purposes from creating a copse to planting a hedge. There is a great deal of information on their website and now is the time to think about what you might do. Trees can be ordered now for delivering and planting in November. As a result of our historical industries of mining, wooden ship building and farming, we have fewer trees than most parts of England so a great opportunity exists for planting and restoring a canopy of trees over Cornwall. We can all play out part in supporting our gorgeous natural environment and it is good to see this strategy and others providing opportunities for one and all.
