cornish paws Catch Up APRIL

Based in Penryn, Cornish Paws is a new family run independent veterinary practice. Every month we will bring you the latest information on pet care, food, training and fun stuff.
Sometimes, one of our patients needs an Advanced Practitioner (AP), such as Katie, to visit and perhaps fix a broken leg. There are other cases which are not so obvious, such as an elderly but lovable springer spaniel with problems leaking urine, unusually caused by a large tumour on her spleen. In view of her age, before any exploratory surgery, we were keen to do everything we could do to rule out the tumour being malignant, so we called on AP Oliver to visit and scan her heart and liver to ensure there was no sign of the tumour spreading, which happily was clear. We were then able to operate, removing the benign tumour. She can now continue her happy and active lifestyle into her old age. Only the minority of cases need outside help from colleagues like Katie or Oliver, but it is such a comfort to both us and our clients to know that their invaluable help is always there when it is needed. ‘MEET THE ELITE’ KATIE & OLIVER
There are times when our pets need a little more expertise than most General Practitioners can offer. Fortunately there are many vets within the profession who have chosen to specialise in a particular area. These are most commonly referred to as Advanced Practitioners (APs) as they have taken additional training and qualifications in their chosen area. Traditionally, owners might have to travel with their pets to a large referral veterinary hospital, at great expense and a long drive. Here at Cornish Paws we are delighted to be able to offer several of these referral level services locally. Instead of pets travelling we have APs who will visit our practice and offer this higher level of service. This is beneficial to both owners, since it means these services are more affordable, and pets, who can be treated in a familiar, friendly environment nearer home. Katie Lenton BVSc CertSAS MRCVS qualified as an AP in Small Animal Surgery in 2007 and now has many years working at this level. Matt first met Katie working together at a large veterinary hospital in Plymouth where they worked together for several years. Matt has watched Katie successfully mentor several other advanced surgeons and she has operated on Matt’s own dogs. She has already visited Cornish Paws several times and performed several operations including TPLO (an advanced form of cruciate repair), fracture repair, complicated cancer resection, MPL surgery (correction of a dislocating kneecap) and Arthrodesis (plating a dislocated joint). She brings not only her expertise but also her own specialised equipment. With Katie we know that a procedure that most of us consider specialised or complicated is a procedure she has successfully performed many times before. www.swsurgical.co.uk
Oliver Garrod BVSc CertVC MRCVS qualified as an AP in Veterinary Cardiology in 2010. Cardiology has really moved on in the veterinary sector and we now know that early treatment of most conditions leads to much better long-term management and longer life expectancy in our pets. This relies on early detection of problems and Oliver is able to achieve this with his expertise and the use of a very fancy ultrasound machine. He is a pleasure to work with and can explain conditions in an understandable way. His help does not stop at diagnosis but extends to extensive treatment advice. He has been independent for the last 2 years but has worked in Falmouth since 2014, so he may be a familiar face to some local pet owners. In the Garden Diary for April
• Order summer bedding and hanging basket plants online now - it’s your last chance! • Give your greenhouse a thorough scrub (if you haven’t already) with hot soapy water. This will get rid of pests and diseases and let in more light. • Prepare beds for the growing season. Dig in a 5cm (or more) layer of compost or well-rotted manure. You can also work in a general-purpose fertiliser, such as pelleted chicken manure, or fish, blood and bone. • Check your container plants aren’t drying out - the warmer weather will quickly affect soil moisture levels • Lift and divide perennial plants now, to improve vigour and create new plants for your garden. • Divide hostas before they come into leaf. • Pinch out the tips of fuchsia shoots and sweet pea plants, to encourage bushy plants this summer. • Divide primroses once they have finished flowering. • Move evergreen shrubs and trees now, provided the soil isn't frozen or waterlogged. • Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser, by lightly forking it into the soil surface. Roses, in particular, are greedy plants and will greatly benefit from feeding as they come into growth. • Tie in climbing and rambling roses.

• Check any tree ties to make sure they’re not cutting into the trunk. Loosen any that are tight, to allow the trunk some room to expand. • Prune your penstemons now - cut back all the old shoots to the base, provided there is new growth at the bottom of the plant. If there are no new shoots at the base, cut just above the lowest set of leaves. • Finish cutting back any dead foliage on perennials and ornamental grasses (if you haven't done so already), to make way for new growth. • Prune forsythia as soon as they have finished flowering, cutting back to strong, young shoots. • Trim winter-flowering heathers as the flowers disappear, to prevent plants becoming leggy. • Tie in new honeysuckle and clematis stems. These plants will be putting on growth now, and you’ll need to train them along their supports. • Continue to remove faded flowers from winter pansies to stop them setting seed. This will encourage flushes of new flowers throughout the spring.

T
here are over 800,000 people in the UK with some form of dementia. There are 2 main types of dementia. Progressive Dementia means severe emotional and mental disruption which leads to rapid deterioration and age related dementia This may simply mean forgetting where you have left your car keys, where you have parked your car and forgetting peoples’ names. Memory cafes deal with age related dementia. What is a Memory Cafe: It is a place where anyone who feels that they or someone they know who has a problem with short term memory loss . Where they can go and be safe. A memory cafe is a social setting where someone with dementia can take part in a programme of activities, entertainments and experiences. We use a variety of activities that jog memories, help with manual dexterity and we have a lot of fun.
There are 450 memory cafes in Cornwall and we have the Cornwall Memory Cafe Network, which is run by volunteers who advise us on insurance, risk assessment etc a very useful body to refer to. We also have access to professional help if needed. Penryn Memory Cafe started in 2015. We have a board of trustees, and a management committee for the day to day running of the cafe. The cafe meets twice a month on the first and third Thursday of the month 2pm-4pm at the Methodist Church Hall, Penryn. We have about 12 members, (this varies ) 6 of who come with their carers, we have 10 regular helpers and the University students are very involved when they are here.

These beautiful historic gardens have been in the same family since the 1280s and make for a perfect day out for families, plant lovers and curious souls. There’s a wonderful woodland walk with rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias and some delightful hidden surprises. Visit the atmospheric walled kitchen garden and the tranquil Pond Garden. Try and spot one of the 17 species of dragonfly we’ve recorded there last year. Finish with a hot drink and a delicious cake in the Cart Shed Café. Join us for one of our series of craft workshops – perhaps making a stained glass flower or a willow sculpture. Don’t forget our Opera on a Summer’s Evening on July 19th.

HAPPY EASTER CAKE This delicious cake isn’t just reserved for Easter. It’s great for chocolate lovers of all ages and for any occasion – even if you simply fancy an afternoon treat
INGREDIENTS 425g butter, softened 175g caster sugar 3 organic free-range eggs 125g self-raising flour 50g cocoa powder, sifted 500g icing sugar Few drops vanilla extract 200g dark chocolate, melted and cooled for 5 mins Maltesers (optional) and flowers, to decorate

METHOD 1. Heat oven to Mark 5/190°C. 2. Beat 175g butter and the caster sugar together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs and fold in the flour and cocoa powder. 3. Pour the mix into 2 greased and lined 20cm sandwich tins and bake for 20 mins, or until a skewer inserted into the middle of the cakes comes out clean. Cool for 5 mins, before turning out onto a wire rack to cool. 4. Beat together the remaining butter with the icing sugar and vanilla
extract; divide between 2 bowls. Stir the dark chocolate into one of the bowls (reserving a little for drizzling). 5. Spread plain buttercream over the top of one cake and sandwich together with the other cake. Spread the chocolate buttercream on top of the cake, drizzle with the reserved chocolate and decorate.
VEGAN EASTER LEMON SPONGE CAKE Perfect for those avoiding eggs and dairy but still want something indulgent
INGREDIENTS
For the lemon sponge cake
360 ml unsweetened almond milk Juice of half a lemon, save other half for frosting Zest of 1 lemon 230 g caster sugar 110 ml sunflower oil 2 tsp vanilla bean paste, or extract 250 g self-raising flour 2 tbsp cornstarch 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
For the lemon buttercream frosting 300 g dairy-free butter, I used Vitalite 1 tsp vanilla paste, or extract 450 g icing sugar Juice of half a lemon
For the deocration
Dark chocolate, melted Vegan-friendly mini eggs or chocolates
METHOD
To make the lemon cake
1. Preheat oven to 180C / 350F. 2. Grease and line two 8 inch cake tins. 3. In a large bowl or stand mixer, mix the lemon juice and zest with the almond milk and set aside for a few minutes to “curdle”. 4. Stir in the sugar, oil and vanilla. 5. Add the dry ingredients a small amount at a time until well combined. 6. Transfer the batter to the cake tins, dividing the amount equally. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown on 7. top and a cake tester comes out clean. 8. Once baked, allow the cakes to rest in the pan for a few minutes before removing and cooling on a wire rack. Wait until completely cooled before decorating. I like to put the cakes in the freezer for a few hours or overnight so it’s easier to decorate.
To make the lemon frosting
1. Simply whisk the butter with the vanilla, adding a small amount of icing sugar at a time until fully incorporated. 2. Whisk in the lemon juice. 3. Taste and add more sugar, butter or lemon juice as needed. www.falmouthwave.co.uk

To decorate
1. You may need to trim your cake slices if domed on top, to create even layers. 2. Place one layer on your cake stand or board and add a large dollop of icing on top. 3. Smooth to the edges, using an icing spatula and add more as needed until you have a thick filling. 4. Place the next layer on top and repeat. 5. Start smoothing the frosting around the sides of the cake to create a thin “crumb layer”. 6. At this stage, I like to put the cake in the fridge for about an hour to set slightly and help make the final layer much smoother. 7. Apply the rest of the frosting to the cake and work your way around, using a turntable if possible, to create a smooth layer. Once frosted, use a pastry brush to dip into the melted chocolate and carefully flick the chocolate onto the cake to create a speckled effect. Top the cake with mini eggs or chocolates to finish. Keep refrigerated for up to 4 days. Enjoy!
