Stop Pulling Fido!
P
ulling is a common and miserable problem and one that many dog owners struggle to get to grips with. So, I have decided to do a two-part article, the first of which looks at some of the reasons why dogs pull and next month offering some solutions to the problem.
The biggest reward in the world
Exercise is one of the biggest rewards you can offer your dog. Off lead exercise is the icing on the cake. The biggest reward in the world. Every time you let your dog off the lead to run around, they receive a massive reward for whatever behaviour they were doing just before you released them, so if they were pulling like a train and you release them, this pulling is being rewarded.
Why does my dog pull even if it sounds like he’s choking?

The chances are, going out for a walk is pretty much the most exciting thing your dog does all day. Sights, sounds, smells are all tonics for a dog and all play a roll in jazzing your dog up so much that pulling towards these things becomes a rewarding behaviour. And guess what, you are letting your dog know that they are about to go and experience these things. Most dogs get pretty wound up just at the sight of a lead, a poo bag or some car keys, and by the time you have your jacket on, they are raring to go!
It’s walk time!
Anything that predicts a walk is exciting for a dog and a lot of puppy and dog owners, inadvertently make that excitement worse. When you step towards that front door, chances are, your dog is alit with excitement and they are probably pulling on the lead before you get to the front door. What happens next is that many of you reward this behaviour by going through the door!!! The dog pulled very hard on the lead. And the consequence was – they got the thing they really wanted more than all the world – to go through the front door.
The truth is dogs don’t mind pulling – in fact some dogs quite enjoy it. And dogs are very tough when it comes to bearing pain and many do not feel the pain in the heat of the moment or when they are over excited, especially if they think they are about to get the biggest reward in the world.
Why is so hard to stop my dog pulling?
Loose lead training is a challenge, both because the stakes are very high for the dog, and because, as we have seen they are capable of putting up with a LOT of discomfort in order to get free running exercise. Even if you never take your dog off the lead, they are still being rewarded each time they pull, with a new sound, sight or smell. Often the difficulty lies in us being consistent with training the dog not to pull and putting in the time to ensure that it works in all situations (proofing).
So what is the answer?
How can we overcome these challenges and teach the dog to walk nicely on a loose lead? What we need to do is look at changing both the dog’s behaviour and more importantly our behaviour and approach to walking the dog. In next month’s edition of the Wave I will outline a training program to get assist you in getting your dog to walk nicely on a lead.

Myth Busters - Dogs can eat anything that humans do. Wrong! Feeding dogs food that humans enjoy can be fatal. Some foods that are toxic to dogs are chocolate, macadamia nuts and onions. Other ingredients that are dangerous for dogs are avocado, potato peelings and green-looking potatoes, rhubarb leaves, raisins and grapes. If you have concerns about your dog’s diet, it is always best to speak to your veterinarian or canine nutritionist for advice.

Balloon Bowls Get ready for your outdoor barbecues and parties by making your own tableware. Great for any age and sooo easy to do. You’ll need tissue paper, PVA glue and a balloon. 1. Inflate the balloon to whatever size you’d like the bowl to be. Cut or tear your paper into strips and stick to the balloon as shown with the glue. Build up the thickness using several layers to make the bowl as sturdy as possible, then leave to dry. When completely dry, pop the balloon and carefully peel it off the bowl. Then, using a nice sharp pair of scissors, trim round the edge of the bowl to tidy the edge up. 2. From our last project, cover a small jar with tissue paper. You now have a really pretty, cheap, recyclable table set for nibbles, fruit or whatever you choose.

hildren’s Hospice South West (CHSW), which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, is delighted to announce that its Moonlight Memory Walk will be returning to Falmouth on 2 October after a break in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic and there will also be a virtual option. The Moonlight Memory Walk is a 5 mile evening sponsored walk held annually in Falmouth which has raised almost £300,000 for the children’s hospice charity since 2009. After months of lockdowns and restrictions having such an impact on fundraising, the team at Little Harbour are delighted to be able to be organising an event which will bring people together for a poignant evening walking in memory of their loved ones and raising vital funds. Kiley Pearce, Events Fundraiser for CHSW said “We are excited to be able to bring the Moonlight Memory Walk back to Falmouth this October as well as give people the opportunity to take part virtually. It’s a chance to remember loved ones as part of a

poignant and uplifting event. We have made many tweaks to the event in Falmouth to ensure it is covid-safe for our walkers, staff and event volunteers and we look forward to people joining the virtual event from across the county and region.” It costs just £10 to sign up for the walk if you would like to take part in Falmouth (limited places available). If you would prefer to take part virtually and plan your own route and distance this option is free however registering is still encouraged as you will receive items for your walk and the memory ceremony through the post. here are over 800,000 people in the UK with some form of dementia. There are 2 main types of dementia. Progressive Dementia means severe emotional and mental disruption which leads to rapid deterioration and age related dementia This may simply mean forgetting where you have left your car keys, where you have parked your car and forgetting peoples’ names. Memory cafes deal with age related dementia.
What is a Memory Cafe: It is a place where anyone who feels that they or someone they know who has a problem with short term memory loss . Where they can go and be safe. A memory cafe is a social setting where someone with dementia can take part in a programme of activities, entertainments and experiences. We use a variety of activities that jog memories, help with manual dexterity and we have a lot of fun.

Penryn Memory Cafe started in 2015. We have a board of trustees, and a management committee for the day to day running of the cafe. The cafe meets twice a month on the first and third Thursday of the month 2pm-4pm at the Methodist Church Hall, Penryn. We have about 12 members, (this varies ) 6 of who come with their carers, we have 10 regular helpers and the University students are very involved when they are here.

ometimes, it’s easier to define something by what it is not. Acceptance is a powerful facilitator of emotional wellbeing, but hard to detect at first. This acronym can help. The title of this post might have lead you to believe this is going to be tough: that sweat, tears and a great deal of physical exertion will be required. Don’t worry, our ULTRA is a far gentler affair. This memory aid is intended to help you feel some peace and relief around difficult issues in your life from everyday frustrations to gut-wrenching heartbreak.
Acceptance isn’t ULTRA
Understanding - we don’t have to understand something to accept it Liking - we don’t have to like it to accept it Tolerance - acceptance is not simply putting up with something we would prefer to be different Resignation - we don’t have to resign ourselves to something to accept it. We are not saying this is how it is and this is how it will always be. Approval - we don’t have to approve of something to accept it
Acceptance is…
Not wanting something to be different from how it is. Acceptance is hard because it is an absence: an absence of the desire for things to be different. When we accept things they no longer trouble us. As a counsellor and therapist I meet many people in distress. Anxiety, sadness and loss touch many lives. It may seem
strange but often the starting point to healing can be finding acceptance of where we are and how we do feel rather than how we would like to feel Often these anxieties, sadnesses and losses are too great and too painful to accept straightaway and it is my job to work with people so they can find smaller and simpler things to accept at first and in doing so increasing their capacity to accept the harder issues. By doing this we increase our capacity for acceptance, just like we make our muscles stronger when we do exercise. At Lifetime, our aim is to put the client and what the client wants at the core of our therapy, trusting that if we provide the right conditions, growth and change will inevitably occur. The conditions we offer are empathy, an accurate understanding of how our client feels, congruence, a genuine and honest relationship and, in my opinion most importantly, complete acceptance of the people we meet in our practice. Although we bring many different approaches to our work, it is all underpinned by Person or Client centred theory. These theories were first developed by Carl Rogers in the 1960s. Rogers’ work transformed the lives of countless individuals and his belief in the power of acceptance in the counselling relationship is still central to our work today. He is famously quoted as saying ‘The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.’ If you’re finding acceptance hard to find, get in touch. 1. Divide your herbaceous perennials. This will keep your plants healthy and vigorous year after year and multiply your stock. 2. Net ponds now before autumn leaf fall gets underway to reduce the amount of debris entering the water. 3. Clean out cold frames and greenhouses ahead of autumn sowing and growing. 4. Plant spring-flowering bulbs now, such as daffodils, crocus and hyacinths, for glorious colour next year. 5. Continue to feed and deadhead hanging-basket and container annuals — they will often keep going until the first frosts. 6. Keep deadheading annuals and perennials to extend their performance. 7. Deadhead your penstemons, dahlias, and roses to keep flowers coming. 8. Divide herbaceous perennials as the weather cools, plant and water in the new divisions well. 9. Prune any late-summer flowering shrubs, such as the rock rose (Helianthemum).
10. Prune climbing roses and rambling roses once they've finished flowering (unless they are repeat-flowering varieties, in which case leave them until later in the year). 11. Keep camellias and rhododendrons well watered at this time of year to ensure that next year's buds develop well. 12. Keep harvesting crops. If you have a glut of fruit and veg try freezing, drying, pickling, and storing so that you can benefit from them later on. For a little inspiration, check out our recipes page for ideas on what to make with your produce. 13. Pinch out the tips of outdoor cordon tomato plants to concentrate the plant's energy into ripening fruits not producing further growth. 14. Harvest sweetcorn. To test if it’s ready, pinch a kernel — it will release a milky sap when ripe. If the kernels are starchy you've left it too late, if they're watery they need a little longer to ripen.
