Based in Penryn, Cornish Paws is a new family run independent veterinary practice.

Every month we will bring you the latest information on pet care, food, training and fun stuff.

Now here’s an instantly memorable word.

Nutraceuticals. No? Well, they are not anything new, in fact they have been around for a long time. A lot of people have experience with joint supplements for arthritis in humans, but perhaps not so many for their animals.

Now, new evidence is emerging, which contains scientific backing, that some of these products do have a clinical effect. The regulations surrounding the manufacture and sales of nutraceuticals for animals are, in my opinion, generally still inadequate.Cornish Paws works exclusively with, Vetplus, a leading UK based company which performs stringent testing of all its products, ensuring that they are of the highest quality and purity, as well as being backed by sound scientific data.

Some of their products which we recommend are described here.

I hope you find an introduction to this range of products interesting.

CAN NUTRIENTS BE MEDICINAL? What are nutraceuticals?

They are products sold as medicinal but only contain nutrients or supplements, not actual pharmaceuticals. As such they can never really have a negative effect (unless overdosed) and can be sold without a prescription. This means that they can be bought over the counter without seeing a vet or a doctor.

Do they work?

In many cases there is a lack of evidence to prove that they work as they have previously relied on anecdotal data alone. However, there are now several products on the market that do have scientific data to prove their efficacy. Certainly here at Cornish Paws we will only stock those products with scientific evidence to justify their use.

Are they the same across manufacturers?

No. Because the regulations around testing and manufacture of this class of medication is far less stringent than with pharmaceuticals.

Similarly described products between different manufacturers can differ hugely, as they also can between different batches of the same product.

This is why we only work with Vetplus because of their dedication to testing their products in the same manner as pharmaceutical medications.

Promax and Sustain Digestive upsets are the subject of many of our consultations. They are often caused by something quite simple like the wrong food, scavenging, change of diet, stress or possibly a more serious condition. The body can often struggle to correct the signs of diarrhoea or colitis without some help.

Promax contains a specific type of clay that will correct diarrhoea and bind to toxins and pathogens in the gut. It is twenty times more effective than Kaolin, which used to be popular many years ago.

Both Promax and Sustain contain probiotics which are important to correct the bacteria colony that live in our gut. These products are a key part of the way to tackle pets with digestive upsets. Many of our clients keep a tube of Promax at home so they can treat diarrhoea as soon as it is seen.

Fibor Many dog owners will visit vets on a regular basis for the dreaded blocked anal glands. This problem, if recurrent, can often be resolved by increasing daily fibre intake. Fibor is a fantastic, inexpensive product that dogs seem to love the taste of, and which can really reduce, or even eliminate the need for regular expressing of anal glands. I am sure our canine friends particularly appreciate this product! There are many more products in this class of medication and we will run a second article covering more of them in a few months. In the meantime, please do feel free to call the practice anytime to discuss any of these products that you may be interested in.

What is available?

Synoquin EFA This product is a joint supplement containing the expected glucosamine and chondroitin but also dexahan, a specific essential fatty acid purified from Krill. BERYL’S VICTORIA SPONGE INGREDIENTS 200g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 200g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 4 medium eggs 200g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting about 6 tbsp raspberry jam 250ml double cream, whipped icing sugar, for dusting

METHOD

1. Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/ gas 5. Grease and flour two 20cm sandwich tins.

2. Place 200g softened unsalted butter, 200g caster sugar and 1 tsp vanilla extract into a bowl and beat well to a creamy consistency.

3. Slowly beat in 4 medium eggs, one by one, then fold in 200g self-raising flour and mix well.

4. Divide the mix between the cake tins, place into the oven and bake for about 20 mins until risen and golden brown. The cakes

should spring back when gently pushed in the middle.

5. When ready, remove from the oven and allow to cool for 5 mins in the tin, before turning out onto a wire rack and cooling completely.

6. Spread about 6 tbsp raspberry jam onto one cake and top with 250ml whipped double cream.

Sandwich the cakes together and dust with icing sugar

In the Garden Diary for August

• Water camellias and rhododendrons thoroughly this month to make sure that next year's buds develop well.

• Keep patio container plants well watered and feed with a liquid fertiliser every fortnight.

• Stake tall or top-heavy dahlias and lilies to prevent wind and rain damage.

• Dead-head bedding plants and perennials to encourage them to flower into the autumn and stop them self-seeding.

• Cut back faded perennials to keep borders tidy.

• Dead-head lilies for a better flower display next year.

• As penstemon flowers fade, cut them back to just above a leaf to encourage more flowers.

• Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves you can harvest before the frost.

• Prune wisteria after flowering by removing all the whippy side-shoots from the main branch framework to about 20cm from their base (about five leaves from the main stem).

• Trim any lavender plants after they've finished flowering to keep them compact.

• Collect ripened seed and store for next year. Leaving some seed heads in place can be attractive and allows the plant to self-seed in the surrounding soil.

• Mow wildflower meadows now to help scatter the seeds.

• Take cuttings of your favourite tender perennials such as pelargoniums and fuchsia to propagate them for next year.

• Finish dividing clumps of bearded Iris now so they have time to form roots and flower buds for next year before the cold weather arrives.

• Prune climbing roses and rambling roses once they've finished flowering (unless they’re repeat-flowerers in which case leave them).

• Spray ground elder (and other perennial weeds) with a glyphosate-based weedkiller as the plant has lots of leaf surface area with which to absorb it.

• Look out for symptoms of ‘clematis wilt’ including black discolouration on the leaves and stems of your clematis.

Cut out any infected plant material and dispose of it in your household waste.

• Water sweetcorn plants regularly and feed with tomato food to get the best cobs.

• Apply a high-potash fertiliser such as tomato food once fruits start to form on pepper, cucumber and aubergine plants.

• Continue to feed tomato plants with a tomato fertiliser and remove lower leaves to help with air circulation and prevent disease.

irstly, we would like to thank all our customers for their patience during these difficult times. As you may know all staff were furloughed during this period for their safety.

During lockdown, various measures have been taken to insure a safer workshop, where distancing guidelines can be applied. We now have returned all the staff along with some new employees to help with the backlog of work and increased production for the future.The machines are humming again !

Workshop visits for joinery enquires will be on an appointment only basis at the moment, however you are welcome to phone to arrange a site survey (precautions will be taken) if required for a quotation. Customers requiring timber sales are welcome to arrive, please ring the bell at the door and wait for for assistance.

Recent weeks has seen new machines being installed i.e. a massive thickness sander, a hydraulic frame press and a powerful tenoning machine.

We’ve had to wait for some longer/wider planers but they are on the way from Germany as we speak. These investments will enable us to work far more efficiently with the joinery and also increase what we can offer in the way of dressed timber.
