here can you find a hairdressing salon at which you can enjoy free onsite parking, free wi-fi, complimentary refreshments and a caring staff force with over 35 years of salon experience? You may be excused if you decide upon Chelsea as your response, however you would be incorrect but equally surprised to learn it’s in the leafy village of Mawnan Smith, just three miles south of Falmouth! Whilst the salon has been established in the village for almost 40 years, resident stylist, Teresa Herrington, proudly took control just over a year ago. In that time she has watched over a complete refurbishment

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
W
ell, after the season of goodwill has seemingly ended, the excuses for good consumption are no longer valid, and we’re all now into the new year with good intentions, it’s back to reality with a note about:
BITE WOUNDS AND OTHER NASTIES!
It’s generally held that getting bitten / clawed / kicked / trampled and otherwise assaulted by one’s patient is pretty much always something to be expected in a vet’s life. Yes indeed it is, yet a surprising number of owners also seem to be clawed or bitten, especially by their cats, but are unaware of the potential nasty consequences.
SIGNS OF INFECTION
In people who have a normal immune system, cat scratch disease is usually not that serious an illness. A small papule (a little raised lump) may develop at the site of injury within 10 days, but you may also feel quite ill with a fever, nausea, vomiting, and generally tired with no stamina. You might also start showing enlargement of your lymph glands, the wound might get worse, and you may get more lumps flaring up at the injury site.
CAT SCRATCH FEVER
Cats’ mouths are particularly unpleasant places where large numbers of bacteria live quite happily – they don’t affect the cat as such, but thrive on the food debris there, and don’t appear to invade the rest of the cat’s body. The one in question here rejoices in the name Bartonella henselae, (try saying that after a glass or two!), and if it gets through your (or my) skin via a very cross cat biting you, it can start to cause what in some cases can be a very nasty infection. These bacteria are also present on the underside of the cat’s nails, so again, if you are scratched to the point when you bleed by the cat raking its claws down your arm / fingers, there’s a chance that the Bartonella bacteria will cause an infection there too. Scarily, too, these bacteria may also be present on cat fur, so it’s possible to contract the disease from petting a cat and then rubbing your eyes. Kittens are more likely than older cats to carry the bacteria and to transmit the infection to humans. Good hygiene is a must therefore, particularly with youngsters (both children and kittens).
www.falmouthwave.co.uk
All rather worrying – and not really something that you’d be expecting. We all get scratched and bitten at some point after all!
TREATMENT
However, the good news is that most cases of cat scratch disease sort themselves out without any further treatment, as your immune system gears itself up to kick the bug out of your body – even though this may take a few weeks or so. But if that’s not happening and the symptoms persist, it’s time for medical advice and your GP may prescribe antibiotics. These are given until the skin lesions resolve, sometimes as long as three to four weeks. Obviously, if you’re on any medication for another sort of condition, or you know that your immune system is not quite what it should be, this bug can cause far more severe problems – and fatalities have been reported.

PREVENTION!!
The best way to prevent cat scratch disease is to avoid situations in which you might be bitten or scratched by a cat. Don't play roughly with a cat, and don't force your attentions on a cat who clearly does not welcome them, and they usually give you fair warning – and most importantly, if you have any problems giving pills to your cat and you are worried about getting scratched / bitten by your increasingly cross cat, talk to your vet! There may well be other ways around pills such as long-acting injections for instance. Or, use a pill-giver, which is great device!! Again, ask your vet – in our practice, nurses can show you how to give your cat a pill safely and effectively. Well, nearly for nearly all cats anyway! In any case, wash your hands thoroughly after playing with a cat. If you are bitten or
scratched, wash the affected area well with soap and water. Cats should never be allowed to lick open sores or scratches on your skin. It is not known exactly how cats acquire the bacteria, though of course it may well be passed down from mother to kitten at grooming. In addition, since the Bartonella bug has been found in fleas, many people believe that cats get the bacteria from fleas – so controlling fleas is also recommended as a way to help prevent infection. So, if you are bitten or scratched by a cat and then develop any symptoms of cat scratch disease, contact your doctor immediately. And the motto of this month’s column is:
‘DON’T MESS WITH CATS!’

FILMREVIEW THE POST
ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD
The story of the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer) and the desperate attempt by his devoted mother Gail (Michelle Williams) to convince his billionaire grandfather to pay the ransom. Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Williams Release Date: 5th January www.falmouthwave.co.uk
In June 1971 The New York Times, the Washington Post and the nation's major newspapers took a brave stand for freedom of speech and reported on the Pentagon Papers, the massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned four decades and four US Presidents. At the time, the Post's Katherine Graham (Streep) was still finding her footing as the country's first female newspaper publisher, and Ben Bradlee (Hanks), the paper's volatile, driven editor, was trying to enhance the stature of the struggling, local paper. Together, the two formed an unlikely team, as they were forced to come together and make the bold decision to support The New York Times and fight the Nixon Administration's unprecedented attempt to restrict the first amendment. Cast : Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Sarah Paulson, Alison Brie, Bob Odenkirk, Tracy Letts, Bradley Whitford, Matthew Rhys Release Date : 19th January to advertise call Ashley on 07800 986216

As he works against the clock to solve the puzzle, he realizes a deadly plan is unfolding and is unwittingly caught up in a criminal conspiracy. Five Degrees West – Quiz Night Prince of Wales - Will Keating celebrating the start of 2018 Cornish Style National Maritime Museum - Captain Bligh: Myth, Man, Mutiny. Last change to see this exhibition as it ends on the 7th January. This exhibition remembers a notable West Countryman and significant national figure, in the 200th anniversary year of his death. It tells a story that challenges the more commonly known Hollywood depiction and brings to life one of the greatest small boat survival stories in history featuring relics from the voyage and a specially built reproduction of the Bounty launch, giving a very real sense of the situation of the 18 men who sailed it over 3600 nautical miles across the Pacific. National Maritime Museum – Tattoo: British Tattoo Art Revealed. Exhibition ends on 7th January. A genuinely ground-breaking and comprehensive history of British tattooing, featuring cutting edge designers, leading academics and major private collectors. Challenging long-standing myths and pre-conceptions about tattooing when it comes to class, gender and age, whilst at the same time celebrating the astonishingly rich artistic heritage of tattooing in the UK.

Newton's News H
appy New Year! While we all expect it to be chilly outside at this time of the year I don’t expect anyone to be living in a cold home. Thousands of people across Cornwall will be lifted out of fuel poverty and live in warmer homes following an £8m funding investment over the next year. Around 36,000 homes in Cornwall are in fuel poverty, with Cornwall in the top 10 of fuel poor areas in England. I am delighted to have helped secure this new funding to tackle a long standing problem in Cornwall. Having been a part of the Winter Wellness partnership for some time, I have seen first-hand how effective this partnership of public sector organisations, businesses, charities and community groups is in delivering positive change for people living on low incomes in Cornwall. Living in a warm home is a matter of social justice and this new programme and investment will help more local people. The Winter Wellbeing Partnership, including 30 partners, from our local NHS to Cornwall CAB, the Fire Service and Cornwall Council has secured over £3.5m from National Grid’s Warm Homes Fund to work with thousands of people to stay warmer for less and be lifted out of fuel poverty. The new fund - ‘Warm and Well Cornwall’ – targets residents who are in poor health or at risk of ill health, or with underlying health issues, or caring for a vulnerable person or worried about their home being cold or damp. Warm and Well Cornwall will help 220 private homes, including owners, landlords or tenants and up to 800 social housing homes with first time central heating, such as renewable heating, mains gas, oil, or LPG, with many more to follow in future years. Social housing partners Ocean, Coastline, Cornwall Housing, Guinness and DCH are investing around £2.5m to improve heating for their tenants with renewable heating and gas central heating. Funding has also been secured from SSE Energy Solutions, Cornwall Council’s Energy Efficiency partner. SSE has ring-fenced Energy Company Obligation (ECO) eligible measures targeted at fuel poor and vulnerable households in Cornwall and is a key partner to delivering Warm and Well Cornwall. By January 2019 the programme is expected to have helped more than 1,000 homes out of fuel poverty, keeping people warm and well. Private landlords with tenants can also apply for funding to upgrade their properties. From April

2018, private landlords cannot re-let existing rented properties rated EPC F or G, unless they have registered a valid exemption and from 2020 landlords won’t be able to let any (non-exempt) properties if they are rated F or G. The WinterWellness Freephone 0800 9541956 is the place to get more information about the wide range of help and support available. It is run by the great Cornish charity called Community Energy Plus. There is cash available for emergency heating payments made available from the Cornwall Community Foundation surviving winter appeal. Of course tackling fuel poverty is not just about bringing down the cost of heating a home and improving energy efficiency, it’s also about increasing household incomes. So Winter Wellness can provide access to impartial and expert information and advice over the phone or face to face with saving money as well as checking eligibility for cash benefits and discounts. Referrals can also be made to organisations that can help people increase their incomes and employment opportunities. Helping people out of poverty and putting more money into the pockets of my constituents is a top priority for me in 2018. I will be continuing to support local employers to protect and grow their enterprises so that more people have the opportunity of a good job. Increasing access to in work skills and training is really important to enable people to increase their wages too. In 2018 I will build on the progress of the recent Budget that increased the personal allowance, so more people keep more of the money they earn before they start paying taxes. I will also make the case for further increases in the Living Wage. I am pleased that thanks to the hard work and dedication of local employers, the number of people of all ages in work is much higher than 2010. Throughout 2018, I want to see the number of well paid good jobs grow here and people keep more of the money they earn.

a beautiful coastal walk and a spot of lunch in a coastal or countryside pub! Last year I came across this They have devised over 200 walks in Cornwall, ranging from 2 to 10 miles, totalling over 1000 miles! Each walk os and notes on the heritage and natural history. The walks are classified by length, steepness grade, type of of course, whether there’s a pub! The walks are all available via their guided walk mobile app - a “SatNav” for o next, and giving you information about the local area as you walk around the route. Search the App Store or you don’t have a smartphone, the walks are available to browse on the web. These are 4 of my favourite walks ll not be disappointed! The app is so user friendly and easy to follow. The app is FREE, you just pay sy. Just scan the bar code and it will take you straight to the walk! Happy New Year Ashley :)

The route follows the edge of Porthleven Harbour and joins the coast path in The Wrestling Fields. The walk continues on the coast path to the huge balanced block of granite on Trewavas Head and then follows a permissive path through the middle of one engine house and past the others before rejoining the coast path to Wheal Prosper on Rinsey Head. The return route is relatively quick and easy, across the fields and along a small lane

O
ne sign that your tyres need changing is noticing a deterioration in performance. For example, your car does not handle or grip the road as well in poor weather conditions as it normally does, or it takes longer to stop when you apply the brakes. The fact that tyres wear
gradually can make it difficult to identify the reduction in performance, so it’s best to have them checked regularly and preferably by an expert. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that the tread on your tyres is not worn beyond the legal minimum limit of 1.6 millimetres.

BEEF CANNELLONI INGREDIENTS
1kg lean minced beef 1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion , finely chopped 4 garlic cloves, crushed 2 x 660g jars passata with basil large pinch caster sugar 400g dried cannelloni tubes
FOR THE TOPPING
50g butter 50g plain flour 600ml whole milk 140g soft cheese with garlic and herbs 140g parmesan
METHOD 1. For the filling, dry-fry the beef in a non-stick pan on a medium-high heat, breaking up with a wooden spoon until browned – about 10 mins. Remove and set aside. Add the oil and cook the onion for 5 mins, until soft. Add the garlic for 1 min more, then tip in the beef and 1 jar of the passata sauce and the sugar. Simmer for 20 mins while you make the white sauce. 2. Heat the butter in a small pan. When foaming, stir in the flour for 1 min. Add the milk gradually, stirring all the time to achieve a lump-free sauce, then bubble for 2 mins while stirring. Remove from the heat and stir in the soft cheese with seasoning until dissolved. Set aside, covered with cling film to stop a skin forming. 3. To assemble, pour the remaining tomato sauce into the base of 2-3 large baking dishes or 12 individual ovenproof dishes or foil containers. Spoon the beef into the cannelloni tubes using a teaspoon and lay on top of the sauce. Pour on the white sauce, then sprinkle with Parmesan. If freezing, allow to cool, then freeze wrapped well in cling film. To eat straight away, heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and cook for 40-45 mins until the pasta is tender and topping golden. Defrost frozen cannelloni thoroughly, then cook as above above for 50 mins-55 mins

Diary for
JANUARY
• Plant new fruit trees and bushes now. They are best planted in a frost free period, bare root and whilst the plant is still dormant. • Think about getting your apple and pear trees, blackcurrants, gooseberries and redcurrants pruned if you haven’t already done so. This job really should be done in the winter when the plants are dormant. • Do not prune plums, cherries and apricots until the summer. If these trees are pruned in the winter they can become susceptible to silver leaf infections. • Raspberry canes can be planted. They need a sunny, well drained spot. • Hedging and trees should be planted now. As with the fruit trees, plant in a frost free period, bare root or pot grown and whilst the plant is still dormant • Prune Wisteria, cut back summer side shoots to 2or 3 buds • Cut back foliage on ornamental grasses before they start growing. Cut them down to within a couple of centimetres of the ground. • Cut down old stems of perennial plants being careful of any new growth • Try to avoid walking on the lawn if there is a frost, or more unlikely in Cornwall snow, on it because it can damage the grass beneath • Start planning your veggie plot for the coming year and order your seeds. Don’t forget to rotate the positions of your crops and that we now sell Suttons Seeds. • Prune back Roses whilst dormant. Cut back to just above a bud (ideally outward facing) and remove any crossing, inward growing or diseased branches. • Make sure that all your garden tools have been cleaned and are ready for the new season ahead and think about getting garden machinery serviced if you haven’t done so already. • Cut back old Helleborus leaves to make the emerging blooms more visable. • Keep bird feeders topped up. The birds need all the help they can get and don’t forget they need water too.
